Yelp
Awww, I have been looking for a good sushi restaurant within a 20 min driving radius for awhile post-COVID...and what does "a good sushi restaurant" entail? Definition is: fresh fish, fresh ingredients, fresh fish, culinarily mindful balance of flavors, fresh fish and just tasty as can be (...and fresh fish)...
I have had delivery and also dine in. Delivery, I got the winter roll, sake maki roll, and dynamite.
The dynamite roll is what I grew up knowing as a dynamite: some typeof tuna/fresh raw fish, sriracha/super hot sauce, cucumber, gobo, chili flakes...happiness...that is also what the "dynamite mix" entails: a 2-3 fish mix with sriracha, chili flakes and happiness.
So..if it was not clear, I love the dynamite roll...it is what I knew growing up as a...well, I said previously...it is delish!
Winter roll is ... sigh...it still falls slightly short of the "OG Winter Roll" that was Fuji-Ya's on Lynd-Lake near Uptown....tobiko, yo! And do not just rely on the spuicy mayo and eel sauce drizzles to pull ya through! Seriously, how many sushi places rely on the overused spicy mayo and eel sauce ontop of sushi rolls to cater to the hype rather than ingenuity and respect for the flavor of the fish?
I step off of my soap box... because my point is that this place has fresh FRESH fish. Word of Warning: ANY Yumi Specialty roll you get is...A LARGE PORTION! And delish. but also a large portion. But, then again, delish.
DINE IN: I ordered the seafood sunomono salad with tako and was truthfully disappointed. The components were all present, and I had asked for the tako sunomono, but the composition was as such: well cut beets on the bottom, julienned carrots like the beets ontop, then the julienne cucumber, daikon radish, microgreens and then some sesame seeds and the toppings of a few pieces of tako...I was disappointed. The "sour vinagrette" that i searched for and needed palate wise, was non existent. I tasted the beets and just tasted raw-beet-earth-dirty-soil-taste, and buried that layer deep. The carrots, cucumber, the... look, each veggie component was wonderfully fresh and cut. The problem was the lack of the vinegar-acid-sour-dressed taste that I expect of a sunomono. ...Mmmmoooooo! I felt like eating grass and ground roots like a cow... So...I ended up scooping up as much of the tako pieces and sesame seeds possible to scarf down, because I didn't want to waste food.
The Hot Knight...this is an example of a Yumi sized specialty roll that is not the "bite-sized" piece possible- but it was delicious. I got the dynamite roll at dine in again and it was just as tasty and satisfying as when I received the previous delivery version.
Lastly, being in person dine in, the service is slightly slow and yet extremely attentive. Maybe they were short staffed? Or well, there was a lot of traffic for inside dine in, outside dine in, take out and delivery vendors. Just, if you expect the main to come within 20 min of ordering it, then you may be disappointed.
There are a variety of wines, Japanese and local beers, wines, sake and cocktails, a patio for fun MN summers and indoor seating. I will be back with a crew that can devour a good amount of variety of tasty and well executed food-because you can definitely find it here!
