The Best Restaurants Along Selby Avenue in St. Paul’s Cathedral Hill | Eater Twin Cities

"A sleek sushi bar with tall bay windows facing out to Selby Avenue, Yumi Sushi Bar’s open kitchen and high ceilings make the restaurant an energetic spot to be on weekend evenings — busy but never too noisy. Signature sushi rolls tend towards “large and in charge” here (translation: hefty enough for one roll to be a meal). For those seeking lighter fare, order from the specialty sashimi, which comes with equally curated touches: golden coins of fried garlic, verdant cilantro oil, a confetti shower of scallions. Book seats on Resy, or place orders for takeout or delivery." - Julie Yu

The Best Sushi Restaurants in the Twin Cities | Eater Twin Cities

"At Yumi, start with an order of fresh, delicate sashimi, like the fatty tuna or raw scallop. Yumi offers a range of classic rolls, plus signature rolls with more unexpected combinations — the “Souzo Truffle” roll tops snow crab with salmon, ponzu, and aromatic truffle oil, while the “Surf and Turf” offers a more terrestrial option of shrimp tempura, marinated beef, and asparagus with spicy mayo." - Serena Maria Daniels

We had an absolutely delightful sushi dinner experience! Everything was so delicious, perfectly prepared and presented. The service was genuinely top-notch; a special thank you to Chinh for his wonderful hospitality and for making our dinner truly amazing. And to the incredible sushi chef crew, 'chef's kisses' for your culinary magic! Can't wait to return. :)

It was my birthday the night I went and I had a blast. Service was impeccable as well as the food. Our server Riley did a great job at making me feel seen as the birthday girl:) He even sang happy birthday in Japanese! And chef Bino made me the cutest caricature out of fresh cut fruit! Overall a blast:)

We always enjoy our dining experience here with the whole family. From appetizers to rolls to entrees to drinks, savory and fresh! We love the sashimi, rolls and udon. What differentiates this place is the service. We are always greeted warmly at the door and Chinh always provides excellent service. A lot of good recommendations and very attentive service. Highly recommend!

Google
Good Japanese food but not worth its price. It tastes very well, however the vegetables used were only onion and cabbage (e.g. cheap veggie options). Our server was a little extra, which threw us off a little. If you’re looking for Japanese food in a cute place, this is where I would go, however only if I want to spend too much money for average food.

Google
Great Japanese sushi restaurant on Shelby avenue. The service was fantastic. Great selection of Sake and huge variety of sushi rolls and shashima.

Everything was so great. The Rock Shrimp appetizer was THE BOMB and favorite roll was the Titanic but really everything was great that our group of 7 had to eat!

Google
I was looking forward to try this place. Quite disappointed. We ordered the calamari, crunchy roll, Salmon roe sashimi, tempura udon soup and shrimp tempura. My mistake was not reading the description well. I was craving for some soup and I saw udon under noodles so I ordered it even though it says tempura udon soup and thinking, that's interesting. It came with a big plate of tempura shrimp and mostly vegetables and the soup is just a side. Then we also ordered the tempura entrée. Both of these came in a big plate with mostly vegetables and a handful of shrimp. What I'm a little annoyed about is the server not asking us if we really want both of these, knowing that they come in a big plate. A lot of servers will point out something like this. My daughter was also disappointed with the roll. She said it's both too sweet and too salty, which is mostly how the foods were. The only redeeming dish is the calamari but if you don't like too sweet of a sauce, don't dip it. Overall, 2.5 only.

Loved our time here. Yumi is our favorite spot for sushi, not to mention that the rolls are huge! Drinks were fun and our server was wonderful.

Yelp
The Food and Service is awesome ..The owner of Yumi takes great care of the restaurant and the Sushi is really delicious! The rolls are also really tasty and beautiful

Yelp
Great sushi, beautiful restaurant - 4 stars! Yumi was the latest stop in my on-going effort to visit every sushi joint in the Twin Cities... LOCATION & PARKING: Once I got over my trauma of trying to find the place and then my frustration trying to locate parking, I was finally able to relax and enjoy the experience. FYI, Yumi is on the ground level of a large multi-story housing unit. The signage on the glass windows is dark and a little hard to see, especially with the trees on the boulevard. I also found out that Yumi will validate parking if you use the big pay lot. Oh, well. Like a dummy, I drove round & round and I found a spot on the street way too far away. DECOR: The restaurant itself is quite beautiful with a lot of interesting design details (see photos). It's all Japanese themed, of course. The vibes are nice without being over-the-top and it still feels warm & welcoming. SERVICE: As I expected, the service was first rate. My server (the bartender) was friendly, attentive, and on top of everything without being overbearing. Shout out to Michael, it was a pleasure dealing with him. FOOD: My 3 tuna based sushi rolls were great. The burst of vibrant flavors were wonderful. Everything was obviously crisp & fresh. I couldn't help but notice that the Yumi rolls are all a larger and more elaborate than most sushi joints - nice! The prices all seem to be pretty reasonable too. LOW CARBOHYDRATE: It was easy to eat low-carb, keto, carnivore style at Yumi. I stuck with my usual tuna based sushi rolls. I avoided anything with big mounds of rice, large puddles of noodles, added sugar, or anything that might be hiding vegetable seed oils. My insulin levels like it that way and it keeps my physician happy too. I'd go back again any time. Thanks for a great experience, Yumi! - Maxx

Yelp
I ordered the surf and turf roll- it was so unique! Had a bit of spice and a large quantity. I also got the chicken friend rice (they do not do side portions, so this is the full size). They do validate parking in the lot right outside. (It looks like it is only for apartment residents, but it is also for business visitors as well) Service was okay- we were there close to closing time and there were portions where we were looking for our server to get more water. The floors were also a bit sticky, hence the 4 star rating.

Yelp
This restaurant has so much variety for all types of sushi lovers! We tried the Miso Soup and Yumi Salad as appetizers, and both were good, but I did think the sesame dressing was a little too salty for the salad. The Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice was yummy and definitely had some kick! My overall favorite was the Chicken Udon Noodles, definitely would recommend. There's a large indoor seating area and it's very nicely decorated. The outdoor patio is kind of small. I was surprised to see it so busy on a rainy Monday night, but for a table for two there was no wait

Yelp
The service was absolutely fantastic.. unfortunately we didn't love all of her recommendations, but that's not necessarily her fault. If you don't like spicy, I would recommend asking which ones have chili oil as some of us found that to be a bit too spicy. The winter roll and honeymoon roll were our favorites that we ordered. The nigiri and sashimi were both MASSIVE and delicious. I wish we would've gotten a sashimi platter as it looked fantastic at another table. The marley roll was highly recommended and was honestly some of my least favorite sushi that I've had in terms of the flavor combinations. The sushi is also quite a bit more expensive than most places in the twin cities, with most special rolls being somewhere around $28. I don't think I'll be back based on the price alone. There is a parking lot that you can get validated in the restaurant as street parking can be hard to find.

Yelp
Phone did not eat first this time. Went to Yumi during happy hour and ordered the egg rolls, four different types of sushi rolls, the spicy edamame, and the steak teriyaki dinner. All really good. The server was attentive and didn't pressure us to leave after we paid the bill and were still talking. There is street parking available and you can park in the paid lot (and receive validation) even though the parking sign doesn't list Yumi as one of the businesses.

Yelp
This is a really great option for some more unique sushi rolls in the Twin Cities. It is definitely a bit more on the pricey side if you opt for the specialty rolls, but we did really enjoy all of them!

Yelp
Food was delicious and beautifully plated. Our waiter was so delightful! And the restaurant is very clean with a nice, almost tropical vibe.

Yelp
Heard that Yumi is a good place so we went to check out. The dinner was very good, I do feel like it's heavily Americanized. The size are HUGE. Nothing bad about it but was just surprised. Ordered the sashimi plater as we were craving for sashimi but look at the size, it was so filling! The sashimi is fresh and has good variety We ordered soft shell crab but it was okay comparing other places'.

Yelp
It was recently restaurant week in the Twin Cities. Originally, it was supposed to end on February 26th. I like that for $30 to $35, you can get a three-course dinner at participating restaurants. I was in town for the last day of restaurant week. I booked a reservation to have dinner at Yumi Sushi Bar after my Minnesota Wild afternoon game. Due to the snowstorm the previous week, many restaurants extended their participation till March 1st, including this one. It meant that I ate well for half my visit. Yay! Yumi is a ten-minute drive from the Xcel Energy Centre. There is a parking lot that requires taking a ticket and getting it validated by the eatery. Otherwise, there is street parking, but it was packed on both sides of Selby Avenue. I walked in and was greeted by the nicest woman. I let her know that I had a reservation for 5:15 pm. I took into consideration the game going into a shootout. I was close. The Wild won in overtime. I also let her know that I needed my ticket validated. She went ahead and did that. You basically insert your ticket into the machine and you exit the lot without paying for parking. I got a table closest to the window, which was lovely checking out Selby Avenue and the folks walking along it as I dined. Riley was my server. He was terrific. I ordered the following items that were a part of the restaurant week menu: - Yumi salad - Honeymoon roll - Matcha ice cream I got a glass of water to start. I also went for a cocktail: For here or to go? was my choice. My cocktail came in a Chinese food takeout container. It had a pair of wooden chopsticks and a straw. It was by far the most unique cocktail presentation that I've ever experienced. It was delicious! The cocktail had Suntory haku vodka, peach puree, aperol, grapefruit, soju, lime, soda, and peaches. It was so refreshing and awesome! My Yumi salad came out first. It was huge. My server asked if I needed a fork. I was okay with chopsticks. He nodded and said that it was easier eating it with chopsticks than a fork. I love salad. This one was excellent. It had spring mix with cucumbers, carrots, red onions, and sesame seeds. The ingredients were ridiculously fresh. The sesame dressing was on the side. I absolutely loved the dressing, which made this salad so yummy. My honeymoon roll came out next. This place has generous portions. What intrigued me about this roll was that it was wrapped in soy paper. I wanted to try it out. This roll had a bit of a spicy kick to it. It had spicy tuna, shrimp, tempura, snow crab, avocado, and cucumber. The honeymoon sauce also had some spice to it. I loved this roll. It had everything I love in it. The roll was huge and yummy. I had no problem devouring it. For dessert, I went with matcha ice cream. I was anticipating a scoop when I had ordered it. Nope. I got three generous scoops of ice cream with chocolaty sauce drizzled on top. Wow! I love strong matcha and it was present in the ice cream. It was also creamy. The chocolaty sauce added a different dimension to the ice cream. The chocolate was subtle, but it was a nice flavour twist with each spoonful of matcha ice cream. I was so happy with everything that I ordered a Bacardi coconut rum and coke to end my meal. This place serves good boozy drinks. I loved it so much. Sure, I was looking at snow. In my mind, I was looking at palm trees with sandy beaches. I had a fabulous experience here. I'm contemplating returning after my next matinee hockey game. It's perfect to relax and unwind after a hockey game. (59)

Yelp
First thing to remember is this around Cathedral hill, not much parking due to apartments and other housing areas. So parking could be a bit to find during evening hours. I only found out you can in the apartment parking lot and get get your ticket validated. Ambiance is fine. Food taste okay and some were good. We order array of food and it came out in a appropriately. Service was pleasant and good. My only problem with this type of sushi restaurant/bar that are selling plates and appetizers for with the price range of 15$-30$ rolls and appetizers is that they produce a nice ambiance, good decorations good drink variety- but the overall food quality for their price is very poor. My reason be, I love sushi restaurants/ bars and usually their is quality in the care of the ingredients and the product there presenting to match the price their charging. Here at Yumi ' s they spent money on everything else but the quality of their food to the price. Example anybody who loves agadashi tofu knows that it is made with silken tofu or at the very least- soft tofu. Here they use a medium tofu oil high is a lower quality. What's more telling is their plate presentation is gimmicky and attention to detail is lacking : example stain on small little soy sauce bowl or worst of all- at the price your charging for food at least get more expensive chopstick then these wooden ones that a fast food Chinese to go place would use. Overall- there cutting cost and quality on the food, they seem to say mid-value bistro chic sushi place but is sub par- mediocre food that a sushi buffet would used . Most of the food taste good but not at the price your paying for. There are many other options that have better quality for the same prices or lower around the area.

Yelp
The food was great at Yumi Sushi bar in St. Paul. Our waitress was great & our food out to us quickly. They also don't skimp out on the wine pour! We got Gyoza's & Rock Shrimp Tempura as an appetizer and the Mexican roll. I also got the For Here or To Go cocktail which was very yummy along with a nice crisp glass of white wine.

Yelp
I've been wanting to come here since the Elite event in Edina. Great hostess staff. Aby was my excellent server. It was packed at 7:30 and I was seated in the very back where it's kind of dark. It's on the cold side with all the huge windows so be prepared. I had a gingerale. Started with harumaki egg rolls. Very good especially the sweet sauce. You get 3 and they are on the medium size. Ended with the beef and mushroom udon soup. Fabulous and it was a great night for it. I can't imagine not getting that huge bowl every time I come here. The rolls on other tables looked delicious but that would have been too much for me. Who knew this elegance would have come out of a Fabulous Ferns. Another reason to not leave St. Paul.

Yelp
When this place first opened, it was a 5 star restaurant with a creative menu, thick slices of fresh sashimi, and great flavors. But, the quality of the food has really declined over time. The spicy tako salad and crispy rice tuna are both must haves, and I get them every time. But, the last few times, the salad just wasnt the same. Literally! I remember big cuts of fresh tako (octopus) in this sald, but these days they use a marinated tako that still tastes good, but I miss the old version. I dont know, the entire salad just doesn't feel as fresh and delicious anymore. The crispy rice tuna is still excellent. We also got the regular sushi platter, and although the portions are still good, I wouldnt trade that for quality - especially with raw fish. Everything looked dull and not appealing. The service was great, and it was generally a good experience, but geez, I miss the excellent food.

Yelp
Awww, I have been looking for a good sushi restaurant within a 20 min driving radius for awhile post-COVID...and what does "a good sushi restaurant" entail? Definition is: fresh fish, fresh ingredients, fresh fish, culinarily mindful balance of flavors, fresh fish and just tasty as can be (...and fresh fish)... I have had delivery and also dine in. Delivery, I got the winter roll, sake maki roll, and dynamite. The dynamite roll is what I grew up knowing as a dynamite: some typeof tuna/fresh raw fish, sriracha/super hot sauce, cucumber, gobo, chili flakes...happiness...that is also what the "dynamite mix" entails: a 2-3 fish mix with sriracha, chili flakes and happiness. So..if it was not clear, I love the dynamite roll...it is what I knew growing up as a...well, I said previously...it is delish! Winter roll is ... sigh...it still falls slightly short of the "OG Winter Roll" that was Fuji-Ya's on Lynd-Lake near Uptown....tobiko, yo! And do not just rely on the spuicy mayo and eel sauce drizzles to pull ya through! Seriously, how many sushi places rely on the overused spicy mayo and eel sauce ontop of sushi rolls to cater to the hype rather than ingenuity and respect for the flavor of the fish? I step off of my soap box... because my point is that this place has fresh FRESH fish. Word of Warning: ANY Yumi Specialty roll you get is...A LARGE PORTION! And delish. but also a large portion. But, then again, delish. DINE IN: I ordered the seafood sunomono salad with tako and was truthfully disappointed. The components were all present, and I had asked for the tako sunomono, but the composition was as such: well cut beets on the bottom, julienned carrots like the beets ontop, then the julienne cucumber, daikon radish, microgreens and then some sesame seeds and the toppings of a few pieces of tako...I was disappointed. The "sour vinagrette" that i searched for and needed palate wise, was non existent. I tasted the beets and just tasted raw-beet-earth-dirty-soil-taste, and buried that layer deep. The carrots, cucumber, the... look, each veggie component was wonderfully fresh and cut. The problem was the lack of the vinegar-acid-sour-dressed taste that I expect of a sunomono. ...Mmmmoooooo! I felt like eating grass and ground roots like a cow... So...I ended up scooping up as much of the tako pieces and sesame seeds possible to scarf down, because I didn't want to waste food. The Hot Knight...this is an example of a Yumi sized specialty roll that is not the "bite-sized" piece possible- but it was delicious. I got the dynamite roll at dine in again and it was just as tasty and satisfying as when I received the previous delivery version. Lastly, being in person dine in, the service is slightly slow and yet extremely attentive. Maybe they were short staffed? Or well, there was a lot of traffic for inside dine in, outside dine in, take out and delivery vendors. Just, if you expect the main to come within 20 min of ordering it, then you may be disappointed. There are a variety of wines, Japanese and local beers, wines, sake and cocktails, a patio for fun MN summers and indoor seating. I will be back with a crew that can devour a good amount of variety of tasty and well executed food-because you can definitely find it here!

Yelp
Sat on the patio tonight and had a fantastic dinner of happy hour sushi and drinks. Tried three different rolls and some great Asian wings. Weather was beautiful and our server was great. We will be back!

Yelp
My husband and I came here on a Friday night for date night. There is parking lot right next to it that the restaurant will validate your parking for you. It's recommended to have reservations. We got there right before happy hour ended and were able to get a couple items. It's a great deal so come before 6! My husband and I are newbie sushi people so we aren't too adventurous quite yet but everything we had was delicious. We started off with the rock shrimp and the crunchy roll. I was pretty full after but of course needed more. We got the vegetable tempura and the California roll. The crunchy roll was our favorite and the shrimp was good, had a little kick but even I could handle it. We loved everything we had. The atmosphere was nice, had a fun, date night feel to it. We'd go back for sure.

Yelp
Walked in an immediate loved the ambience of this restaurant. Sat at the bar and the bartender was very attentive. The vibes were just right. The sushi was delicious and the drinks hit the spot. Nothing but positive things to say about this experience and would recommend. Perfect for a date night.

Yelp
We stopped here for dinner during restaurant week and were not disappointed! Normally it's around ~$25 for a roll, but it was HUGE! Loved the vegetable tempura and Mochi ice cream. Kind service and a cool modern vibe inside. We plan to come back! PS they will validate your parking if you park in the "Tennant only" parking lot.

Yelp
Really great food and so cute in there. What stood out the most is the great service. Loved it!

Yelp
Fantastic sushi! Exceptional service by Michael tending the bar. A good size menu, variety of options.

Yelp
Came here for restaurant week and I was really pleased with the service and food! My server was super sweet and super friendly as I came by myself. Can't remember her name unfortunately, but she was great! I would say, their shrimp shumai is literally to DIE FOR. It's not what you'd expect and it is absolutely perfect. Since I went for restaurant week, they had a limited menu, which is why I only gave it 4 stars. I would love to go back and upgrade them to 5 when I taste other things. Overall, my experience was lovely, the price was reasonable for what I got, and glad I went here! Can't wait to take my husband here!

Erin E.

Yelp
We have been enjoying the sushi here. Some unique options for sushi rolls which is fantastic. The rolls are large. Service is slow which is the only feedback I would give for recommendation to the establishment. Ambiance is nice. Booths, high and low tables. Does not feel crowded. Nice bar seating area. Appears fairly clean. We will keep going back for more!

Yelp
This was an unexpected find for last minute date night to celebrate our anniversary. Service was excellent! Good was amazing. We ordered a tonka roll, sashimi sampler platter and seaweed salad plus gyoza to end the night. The Tonka roll was delicious with the creamy sauce, soy wrapper and big chunks of fish with cilantro makes it so tasty! The best sushi roll over had in long time! The sashimi platter was a pleasant surprise with thick slices of fish which was awesome! The seaweed salad tasted so fresh and probably by far the best I've had. The gyoza was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. All very good. Would definitely come back!

Yelp
I recently visited Yumi to try their infamous sushi burritos and was absolutely blown away. As a born and raised California. my expectations for anything regarding sushi is incredibly high and Yumi did not disappoint! I ordered the spicy tuna sushi burrito, and the fish was incredibly flavorful and a lot more spicy than I expected (but in a good way). The ratio of rice to veggies to fish was perfect and you could tell that the burrito was made fresh. The weight staff was incredibly helpful and took my friends accommodations to get less rice. We sat outside on the patio, which during the summer months was absolutely beautiful. They also have indoor seating which would be beneficial during the winter months. The only thing that I would suggest they change is a wider variety of drink options. You're pretty much limited to tea, a Japanese soda, La Croix and some fountain drinks so I think a wider array would be more beneficial. Overall though I highly recommend this restaurant!

Yelp
I am never disappointed by this place! Looking at the menu, I always think it's kind of pricey, but after I get my food its SO much and such generous portions that its well worth the money. The rolls are huge and they put in lots of fresh fish and ingredients. It's hard to even fit a whole piece in my mouth but it's sooo delicious I don't mind. My friend and I split the hamachi jalapeño platter as an appetizer, the hamachi is so soft and buttery that when my friend and I split the 7th piece, it was easily cut with the chopstick. I'm allergic to shellfish but most rolls contain shrimp or crab, so I did the crunchy roll with salmon instead of shrimp tempura and the server, Jason, was very accommodating! He offered to have the chefs make it in a sterile area to avoid cross contamination, but my allergy isn't that bad so I declined but I really appreciated the care he took with it. They don't have many mocktail choices, just one similar to a mojito. I would love to see more creativity there, even if it's a just a soda water with syrup and a citrus fruit or something. It really elevates the experience and really beats the grape soda I had to opt for- which was still delicious don't get me wrong :) just feels a lot better to have a nice Mocktail with dinner. After splitting a big app, getting a roll, and a soda it was only $40 which isn't bad at all for such a great experience with a fun, chic atmosphere and great service! Parking is always easy as it's attached to the mall and all the servers there are SO friendly and fun! Jason looked super busy but never once did I need something and wasn't able to spot him and get whatever I needed!

Yelp
Great food and service! Loved the restaurant week specials. Sushi was very tasty and the sake selection was great too!

Yelp
Their sushi white rice is great. The food is good. But, and huge but, the food is extremely pricey for the quality and sizes.. I know it's sushi and rolls but.... Come on.... Why so expensive. The restaurant is nice and all but wow so expensive. Their service overall was great but that doesn't help with everything else...

Yelp
I didn't realize this was a fairly new addition to the selby ave neighborhood, we dined outside on the patio and our server was great. Everything was delicious and fresh, the sushi and the fried rice - chefs kiss. The calamari was the only thing that didn't knock my socks off, just too big for my liking but it was good. Great cocktails, great food and great service.

Yelp
This is going to be my new go to sushi restaurant in Saint Paul! It's conveniently located off of Selby Ave right across the street from Red Cow and nearby Handsome Hog. It even has it own private parking lot if you don't want to park on the street. Came here with my family on Sunday night, it was pretty dead inside which was surprising. I ordered the crunchy roll (shrimp tempura, avocado, cucumber and masago wrapped in crunchy tempura flakes and topped with eel sauce), my dad ordered the tempura udon bowl (shrimp or chicken tempura served with tempura vegetables and a side of udon soup topped with scallions and sesame seeds), and my mom got the sake maki (salmon) + unakyu maki (eel) rolls. Everything looked amazing and the fish was very fresh. The udon bowl had a huge plate of tempura alongside the bowl of noodle soup and was an incredible value ($13.95). Everyone loved their meals and I couldn't find one bad thing about our experience there. They also had super nice wait staff, our waitress was very welcoming and knowledgeable about the menu. 10/10 would recommend Yumi!

Yelp
Love the sushi here. Our go to date night hang for amazing fish. Michael, our favorite bartender in Saint Paul is amazing, but all the staff is way solid. The mussels, spicy edamame and sashimi are off the hook

We went on a Monday evening. No wait or line. Very kind staffs who were attentive to our needs. The rolls we ordered were yummy. I give it 4/5. Cocktails we ordered were cute, but extremely strong for my taste. I give it 3/5. I ended up not finishing mine. Forgot to mention that you can also validate your parking ticket in the restaurant too.

Yelp
We came here for multiple sushi rolls and it had great reviews but the specially rolls were not that special. Typically, it doesn't matter how full I am, I can eat most or all of the sushi rolls, but we had a little over half left over. The rice didn't even taste right. I will say it's hard to compare and give great reviews for sushi outside of downtown Minneapolis. We ordered the Tonka, Icee, salad, spicy tuna and other. 3/10

Yelp
Came here last minute and was pleasantly surprised. The rolls were delicious, but they were massive! We couldn't eat as many as we normally would have. As a fun surprise, they had real wasabi on the menu, which I've never seen offered at any other sushi restaurants. Finally, our waitress was attentive and gave great recommendations!

Yelp
I've had Yumi on my list of sushi spots to try since the beginning of covid and last night it finally happened. We sat outside on their (unheated) patio but the sun was out and it was perfect. The beef kushiyaki appetizer was delicious. Not a ton of meat but very tender and flavorful. The quality of fish is excellent. The flounder came in same-day and it was the first time I'd had it. It was so delicious, I will definitely get it again. The hamachi and maguro were tender and delicious and sliced generously. The Marianne roll was a nice compliment to the nigiri that we ordered. It's a beautiful roll, and the crab is real and fresh. The pink soy paper is a neat touch. All this food and 2 beers plus sake came out to about $100 so on par with other higher-end sushi spots in the twin cities. Our server Christine was knowledgeable and friendly. It wasn't the quickest service but I liked that; I didn't feel rushed even though the reservation time slots are limited with covid. Great date night, solo dinner, friends or business meeting spot. I'll be taking my family here when they visit this summer.

Yelp
Got takeout for my mom and me, we got the beef fried rice and some noodle dishes. Absolutely no flavor whatsoever. The only flavor present is a crap ton of sesame seed oil. Not even salt. 70$ and we threw it all away. No clue how this place is popular, don't waste your money here.

Yelp
Planned my friends birthday dinner here after hearing good things and felt bad that this is where I chose. My sushi was unfortunately poorly wrapped and their take on the crunchy roll was unlike anything I'd had and personally I didn't enjoy it. My husband had fried rice which I did enjoy it had lots of fresh seeming veggies. It was pretty packed as we were there on a Saturday night so a bit loud. Parking is poorly marked but you can park in the lot and they'll validate for you.

Yelp
We're new to the area (moved from CA) and have been looking for some good sushi. Our server was great. She was helpful with the menu and recommendations, and we never felt like she forgot about us. We ordered the calamari and three rolls. Everything tasted pretty fresh. The rolls we ordered were the most expensive, but they were also quite large. One was a little fishy (maybe the soft shell crab), but they all had good flavor. We really liked the Tonka roll, which is quite unique (in a good way) with a soy wrapper and cilantro, and the Icee roll with the icee mix (chopped up whitefish mixed with chili oil; not spicy just flavorful). There's street parking and a good-size parking lot for the complex (they validate).

Yelp
Second time through and was less impressed. The pieces of nigiri and sushi are so large that you feel like you need to take multiple bites. But then the pieces crumble. And if you take the whole bit your mouth is completely full and you don't seem to enjoy the flavors as much. Plus, some of the nigiri was too chewy for my taste. And the cocktails were nothing special. I wouldn't get them again for that price. All in all, still an okay spot. But just some more downsides that initially experienced.

Yelp
The plating of this sushi is amazing! On the Regular Sushi Platter, each nigiri piece was separated by thin slices of lime. It felt fresh, and I also like the added green color to the dish. The nigiri pieces I ordered had BIG pieces of fish. However, the big pieces overwhelmed the rice and I actually had a hard time getting enough soy sauce/salt evenly distributed on such a large piece. As a result, most of the fish actually tasted pretty bland. Normally bigger is better, but not this time. They have a pretty nice patio, and their indoor dining area feels modern and high class.

Yelp
Our server seemed very out of it and spacey. The rice was over cooked and the sushi was expensive for what you get. The rock shrimp is delicious but the actual sushi I was not impressed by.

Yelp
I very recently ordered online for pickup 3 appetizers and 4 roll dinners from Yumi in St. Paul. The food was prepared and ready for pickup exactly on time, and the staff was very cordial and efficient in bringing the food to the register. All of the appetizers and all 4 of the rolls were quite delicious, hence the 5 star rating. My only negative to the restaurant is this: My invoice informed me (after I had already paid for the pickup) that the restaurant charges a 4.95% service charge in addition to the tax and the tip that I gave. This was a surprise and is not someting that the restaurant mentions on the menu. At the bottom of the invoice the service charge is explained as charge which is included on all checks in order to support supplemental employee health and wellness benfits. Really? Not to deny the employees their good health but I don't think this is my responsibilty, and it is not optional to pay this or not pay it. I do think this extra charge should be brought to the customer's attention beforehand. I had left a tip and now find I am leaving an extra almost 5%. Seems a bit of a bait and switch.

Yelp
I've been thinking about the sushi I had here for the last two weeks. It was so good. I'm allergic to shellfish, so my options for specialty rolls at sushi places are always limited, but there were a few options that I could work with -- I got the winter roll, and it was incredible. I balked a little at the $18 price point, but once I saw just how much sushi came out of the kitchen, I had no issues with it -- it was huge. We also got the gyoza to start, which was phenomenal. They have a cute outside seating space, which I look forward to using when it's not raining!

Yelp
This is not a budget sushi spot but they have a lovely patio and the sushi is delicious. It has been a while since I visited but the fish was delicious and their specialty rolls are quite large (the price does reflect that though). This is some of the best quality I've had in the cities.

Yelp
Yumi has been on my radar for a long time, but before this weekend I didn't have an excuse to visit. It's definitely on the spendy side but the quality and portions are top notch. I can pretty comfortably say that if you're looking for high quality sushi, Yumi is the place to go. I was really impressed with my chefs choice specialty roll and I think that next time I'll go for an assortment of maki and nigiri to highlight their skill and fresh ingredients.

Yelp
I've now been to this restaurant twice. It is so very good. But warning it is a bit pricy. The thing I think I love more than the food here is the service. Both times I think it was some of the best service. Everyone is so kind. The first time I went the chefs made us a little something special to try and I'm not sure what it was but it tasted like heaven. This last time it was so very windy and my friends drink knocked over and our kind waitress topped her off and brought napkins right away! If you're trying to find budget sushi this is not really the place to come. But if you want to ball out on a devilish meal you won't regret this is the gold. The rolls are GIANT but so so good. And the seaweed salad I think is some of the best around. Also, my god their drinks are one to rave about. I very much like all of them.

Yelp
This place has a great atmosphere and is centrally located. The portions are good and the server was friendly. The service was slower and would be good for a relaxed meal.

Yelp
If you like large rolls come here! First time going here since it has been on the list since they opened the St. Paul location. I don't what I was expecting but hoping it wouldn't be the AYCE Kyoto quality. Our server was very nice and talked to us about the yumi rolls. We decided to got with the rolls since that was most of the menu and were not disappointed! They are a little more expensive but they are MASSIVE. We ordered what we would normally get at kyatchi or masu and we had lots of left overs :). You are definitely getting a bang for your buck. I would say no more than 2 rolls per person so it might be better to go in a larger group so can try more rolls. The crunch roll was by far out favorite and weighed nicely with the spicy mexican roll. My one criticism was that the rolls were so big you could barely eat them in one bite. I ended up choking on a piece because I put the whole thing in my mouth. Not sure if you should cut sushi because then it would be messy. The rice was a bit chewy for me but the amount and quality of the fish really made it. I would recommend getting a specialty roll since the maki or nigiri will fill you up and you won't get as many flavors.
