Dear Owners of Yummi Joy,
I have no clue how you've managed to keep your prices so reasonable while simultaneously employing the most competent gaggle of coffee-shop hipsters I've ever met, but bravo. Seriously, you can catch an eye watering dose of snark in this town just for walking into a shop and giving employees something to do (which usually seems to be the hallmark of an underpaid workforce)... but your staff are always so nice, present, and willing to engage. Over the past year, I've watched them be eternally patient with indecisive families, hordes of untethered children, daydrunk wine moms, and folks who just desperately need water. The stickers on your door say that yours is a safe haven for trans (and any) children, and the demeanor of your employees reflects this as well. This place is about as close to my old Austin as it gets anymore. You done good.
My one gripe, however, is that I can't seem to leave a tip when I'm paying with a card or via tap. I come in almost every day for a very reasonably priced espresso and water, and I'd be happy to do so, but like nearly everybody else in the city, I don't carry cash. I've asked your staff about it several times (because, again, their professionalism compels me to leave a tip) , at which point they always just shrug and say "that would be nice, but the card reader just isn't set up that way".
12 years ago, when I was coming up in this town, I worked at a campus coffee shop. The tips that we received from digital payment very sincerely turned the job from "barely scraping by in this increasingly expensive city" to "I can actually pay my bills, put gas in my car, and save a little money".
It is becoming IMPOSSIBLE to live here for people in these jobs. Please just do the right thing and program the card readers to allow us patrons to drop at least $1 with a transaction. It's such a small thing, it will cost you nothing, and it could drastically increase the QOL of your deserving staff (who are making you look good, btw).
