The 12 Best Chinese Bakeries In San Francisco - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"The standout at Yummy Bakery is the egg white custard tarts. Though there are other Chinese-style bakeries in Chinatown that sell them, Yummy arguably makes the, well, yummiest ones: the custard is airy and creamy, albeit a little sweeter than their yolky counterparts. There is also a variety of other excellent baked goods here, like purple sweet potato buns, durian cakes, and flaky wife cakes." - megan zhang, julia chen 1, patrick wong

The 10 Best BBQ Pork Buns In SF - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Hard decisions must be made when you go to Yummy. Will you choose the baked BBQ pork bun or the BBQ pork bun with pineapple bao topping? Both versions are almost leaking with savory-sweet BBQ pork, so much so that some will inevitably fall to the ground after every bite. Our advice is to order both types. Why stop at one great episode when you can binge the whole season?" - julia chen 1, patrick wong

Yummy Bakery And Cafe - Review - Chinatown - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"The standout at Yummy Bakery and Cafe is the egg white custard tarts. Though there are other Chinese-style bakeries in Chinatown that sell them, Yummy arguably makes the, well, yummiest ones: the custard is soft, airy, and creamy, albeit a little sweeter than their yolky counterparts. Yummy’s crust also leans on the crumblier side, almost like a hybrid between shortbread and puff pastry. There is also a variety of other excellent baked goods here, like purple sweet potato buns, durian cakes, and flaky wife cakes (also known as sweetheart cakes) filled with winter melon. And note, this small bakery only accepts cash or Venmo." - Megan Zhang

Small, hole in the wall place that packed with plenty delicious sweet treats. And there is a line, just 15-20 people when we joined it. It does move at nice pace but you might have to wait for the egg custards if they ran out (20-25mins for freshly baked). This place is well known for the egg custards, bun & cream cake. Once you got inside, great smell of baked goods for sure and packed of people waiting for freshly bake custards since they ran out within A MINUTE. The place is not quite clean but a typical well oiled machine place that keeps on making yummy delicious sweet goods non stop. They ran out of most of their goodies so you have a choice of get what they have available or wait for the next patch…we waited and it was aooo soo worth it. I mean, it’s cheap and greatly good. It’s not that overly over the top good, but it simply greatly good for the quality and the price. Service is good, friendly and quickly well done. Wish I can eat the custards daily here but waiting daily for it is something for me to think about. Glad that I got a chance to taste the goods are. Love it! Oh I also got their HK hot bubble tea, and it just hitting all the right spot. Thank you.

I stopped by Yummy Bakery & Cafe in Chinatown and tried their egg tarts, and they were absolutely worth it. The crust was flaky, buttery, and light, while the custard filling was smooth, silky, and not overly sweet. It had that perfect balance that makes you want to eat more than one. The bakery itself is a classic Hong Kong–style spot with lots of fresh buns and pastries lined up in the case, and the smell of fresh bread hits you as soon as you walk in. Prices are very reasonable, and everything feels fresh out of the oven. It’s a no-frills place, but that’s the charm—it’s all about the quality of the pastries. If you’re in Chinatown and craving a good egg tart, this is definitely a place to stop by.

We got some bakery items from this small bakery in Chinatown. The bakery items were delicious. The egg-whites tart was unique and very delicious — not too sweet and filling. Service was good but the lines long at this small establishment —well worth the wait, however. We are looking forward to returning again to bring some treats home on the next visit to Chinatown San Francisco.

This bakery is known for their egg tarts, but I honestly don’t think they live up to the hype. While I get that Asian-style pastries are usually less sweet, these egg tarts were just too bland for my taste. The crust is nice and crispy, but the custard filling lacked richness and flavor. They offer both the traditional Hong Kong egg tart and a unique white version, which has a subtle coconut oil aroma—but still not enough to carry the flavor. On the plus side, the egg tarts are impressively large and served piping hot straight from the oven, which is always a treat. And for the price, they’re incredibly affordable. It’s a good value, but flavor-wise, I’ve definitely had better elsewhere.

We came here on a rainy day searching for some pastries for our train ride back to the South Bay. This place did not disappoint. There was a huge variety to choose from and everything looked so fresh and mouthwatering. We bought a moon cake, egg tart, several buns and cakes, the total came out to about $12, for maybe 5 or 6 items. The price is very reasonable, and the taste was exquisite. I highly recommend this place, there are a huge variety of vegetarian and non vegetarian options, sweet bread loaves, and moon cake flavors. The service was also exquisite. We are eager to come back and try more pastries!

Last week, I passed by Golden Gate Bakery and saw a huge line, so I decided to find another spot in Chinatown with equally delicious egg tarts! (After all, there are so many egg tart shops there 😆!) That’s when I discovered Yummy Bakery & Cafe that sells egg white egg tarts! Even when I arrived 30 minutes before closing, there was still a small line! They were still baking fresh bread and egg tarts—such a nice surprise! The interior clearly showed its history as an old-school bakery, which immediately let me know they are good 👀. I got the egg white egg tart, regular egg tart, and a pineapple bun with real pineapple chunks 🍍. Egg Tart: When eaten fresh and warm, the crust is super crispy and fragrant, and the custard is soft, silky, and delicious 😋. It’s above average, but not mind-blowing—more of a solid stable choice when you’re craving egg tarts! Egg White Egg Tart: The filling had a texture kind of like steamed milk pudding, and the crust was on the crispier side! It might not be for everyone, but it’s definitely worth trying at least once! Pineapple Bun: The crust was flaky, and the bread was soft and fluffy! The balance between the milk custard filling and real pineapple chunks was just right—when you bite into the pineapple pieces, the natural fruity aroma bursts out, making the custard feel lighter and not overwhelming 😲. Such a pleasant surprise!! If you ever catch these fresh out of the oven, you must get one—this was my favorite out of everything and totally worth buying again! It was my first time trying a pineapple bun with actual pineapple chunks inside 😆. And it was so crispy that I couldn’t even tear it apart for a photo—it just flattened instantly 😆. Definitely best enjoyed warm! Follow me at ig @taiwanese.foodie.sf for more foodie reviews 🤤

The real pineapple bun was the best pineapple bun we ever had. Long lines sometimes but they move fast.

I did a side-by-side comparison of egg tarts with Good Mong Kok Bakery up the street. Yummy Bakery has a slightly better crust, but neither is my favorite. The custard is a little bland. Pineapple bun was okay. Friendly staff. Good price & accepts credit cards.
