Podcaster Aubrey Gordon’s Guide to Dining in Portland and Beyond | Eater Portland

"I'm an extreme local chain aficionado and Cafe Yumm is a go-to: the tofu skewers and the cookies are fantastic, I love the Smoky Yumm bowl and the Hot N Jazzy (the worst name for the best thing), but I always come back to a medium original Yumm bowl, a tofu skewer, and the ginger cookie — the perfect order." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Definitely very delicious food, the waitress/ server was very lovely and kind. It's very good to know what you would like to order before coming or having someone who knows more about the food! That's my experience as I came with a friend but very authentic flavor! Taste very homemade !

We were craving for good Taiwanese / Chinese food and found this restaurant. We arrived around noon and were seated immediately although it was pretty busy. - baked pork chop on rice: the dish tasted good but the pork chop was thin. - salted fish & chicken fried rice: the portion was very generous for the price. I requested lots of salted fish and they did gave lots of them. - hot milk tea: good, creamy and perfect sweetness

Me and my husband went and order the rib eye combo, food was good, but the ice lemon tea had a fly in it. We asked the lady in the front to get a new milk tea instead. Update: don’t recommend this place for food anymore. We used to be regular all the time but they just getting worse and worse. The lunch specials went up the price which we don’t mind at all but the portions for the food are getting smaller and smaller every time. last time we ordered the curry pork chops and the potatoes was sour and thought was an accident. Came here again, we wanted the noodle she gave us rice, so we let her know, guess what, they remade the noodle and left the meat on the side, so I got some hot noodle with cold meat. Reply disappointed at yummy cafe and will not recommend this restaurant for Hong Kong cafe food.

Food was good. Milk tea was very good. Looks like a very old school cafe.

Google
Great service. If I return I will probably try something else I didn't care for my choice in food I ordered the turkey avocado wrap and I believe it comes with thousand island dressing which I am not a fan of. My husband had a noodle dish my apologies I do not recall the name.

Traditional HK style food. No frills. Meals took a bit longer to come out but very delicious. Would come back again!

I used to get takeout from here all the time but never again. The portions were about 1/3 of what they used to be, and the quality was god awful. The most basic things weren't even good. I used to love to get pork fried rice and szechuan chicken and it would be enough for almost 4 meals but now the fried rice is gross, the amount of chicken looks like what id have on meal 3. I spent almost $70 for food for me and my girlfriend and the only halfway decent thing was the mushroom beef, even that was about half as good. The plain rice was cold and dry, and they only gave me 1 when i ordered 2.

Yelp
This place is so nostalgic because coming here always brings back memories of good times with family. It also has major Hong Kong cafe vibes, and the pictures on the walls are such a throwback. I don't come here often anymore, but it seems like the price always increases by $1 every time I visit. A few years ago, I clearly remember how it used to only be $10.99 for their lunch special and now it has slowly increased to $13.99! They have a special lunch deal that comes with your choice of a selected drink. I like to get either an iced lemon tea or milk tea. They have a lot of lunch entrees available. I usually get the stir fry black pepper chicken udon, baked pork chop spaghetti, or spicy Szechuan chicken and rice. The food is flavorful and yummy, but portions could be bigger. After finishing a plate of food, I am always wanting more! Their Hong Kong milk tea is strong and perfectly sweetened. It gives me the shivers if I drink it too fast, so I would sip on it and take it to go if I can't finish it. The lemon tea is refreshing as well and is a good palette cleanser!

Yelp
This review is solely based on the baked spaghetti. I Used to come here a lot for the baked spaghetti with meat sauce but it looks like they might've changed owners and the recipe. It doesn't taste the same. I don't think I'll ever find a place that makes it like they used to. So sad.

Yelp
Got delivery. Mooshi veg. was really good. Only needed more pancakes. Sweet & Sour soup also good, but I ordered mild & it was SPICY, at least for me. Would try again!

Yelp
I ordered from here in a state of despair after too many drinks last night and Yummy Cafe brought me back to life. The wonton noodle soup was the perfect flavor from the broth to the egg noodles and the wontons. Probably the best in Sacramento for the price. I also got a hot lemon honey tea that healed my soul. It was sweet from the honey but also had a slight bitter bite from the lemon that was quite enjoyable. Yummy Cafe is out here saving lives.

Yelp
Oh man, I haven't been to Yummy Cafe in years! I used to come here often for late night eats. My friend and I suddenly remember this existed and wanted HK style diner food so we came to see if it was still good. IT WAS SO GOOD! Everything is made fresh and it was so nostalgic. I loved their baked tomato pork chop over rice. The salt and pepper chicken wings were DELICIOUS as well. I am so happy that I rediscovered this gem, I will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
This place will always be good. I know food. Please go here, atmosphere is homey and food is amazing. Get anything...it'll slap. The drinks here, they slap.

Yelp
Food is just gross. It has not changed from 2015. It's still the same. My friend ordered food there recently and was given old chicken.

Karen C.

Yelp
love the ladies over there! Super friendly and great services. The food is yummy too. Price is in the medium range. And who wouldn't know about their iconic yellow/orange ish tables hahaha

Yelp
Till this day, I still enjoy dinning at Yummy Cafe. There are numerous quality menu items to select from. On this visit, I elected for Mongolian beef. The beef was very tender and flavorful. I love eating this dish with a bowl of steamed white rice. I am already looking forward to my next visit!

Yelp
It was our first time dining here and we really enjoyed the food. Ordered the family special, 3 entrees plus free soup. Flavor was good and salt n pepper ribs are delicious! Fried pig intestines is a must! You get 5% off when pay with cash. This place deserves more recognition! We'll definitely be coming back!

Yelp
Amazing service. We called ahead and order. The food is ready on the table when we walk in. Save time especially when have hungry trip-mate who eats a lot! . Lemon tea is also legit. Beef chow fun is the same if I were to eat in Asia! Must order! Parking is easy. The place is clean. Will come again.

Yelp
Friendly staff. Food is hit and miss. Salted fish chicken fried rice: 2.5/5. Bland. Not enough salted fish bits. Hey, at least it was warm this time! Scrambled egg & seafood chow fun: 3/5. The chow fun was good. Not stingy on the seafood. But the sauce was a bit disappointing. Wonton noodle soup: 4/5. The wonton tasted good, but the shrimp was a bit small. Noodle was perfect. The soup was also good. Mango pudding: 4/5. For only $2.50, it's a must have. It has also mango jelly and mango bits. Egg puff: 4/5. Great taste. Sweet, but not too sweet. The only complain: it wasn't crispy enough on the outside. Mango sago: 3/5. The tapioca was too hard. Undercooked? Borscht soup: 3/5. Full of ingredients. When it came out, you could smell the flagrance! Unfortunately, it lacked a bit of taste. Not sweet and sour enough.

Yelp
Been about 10 years since I eaten here. I think this used to be Yummy Guide. The food was just ok. Pricing has gone up for smaller and less quality dishes. $15 for salt n pepper tofu was a bit on the high end for this low cost ingredient appetizer. The beef crispy noodles was seasoned well. The pork rib stir fried eggplants were missing black beans as described. I was more excited to see Mango Sago as a dessert, but turns out all they did was made frozen mango smoothie and poured it in a bowl and added some sago to it. It tasted nothing like the Chinese dessert I was used to. And the black sesame dumpling soup completely lack sweetness. This was not one of my best experiences here as far as food taste, and desserts. The staff was friendly and sweet.

Yelp
This is my first time eating at this restaurant, so I didn't know what to expect in terms of food, service, prices, etc. The place was not busy so we were seated right away. I decided to try the String Beans with Chicken and Fried Rice, and my colleague ordered the salted fish with fried rice. The presentation was pretty simple, nice, and clean and appetizing. The chicken tasted really good; however, the string beans were a little on the overcooked side. I prefer my string beans cooked on the crunchy side and not overcooked making the beans too soft. The flavor was really good. The lady that helped us seated, also took our order, served us water, served our food, and was our cashier. She was very pleasant and attentive to our needs. Overall, our experience with this restaurant was very good. If I ever come around this area, I will definitely come back and maybe try other menu items. If you're looking for something simple and quick to eat, I definitely recommend this place.

Yelp
I love Yummy Cafe! This place was the spot when I was in college, they used to be open till 2 in the morning yet they close earlier now. The highlight of this place is their lunch specials, for $10.99 you get an entree and choice of milk tea, hot tea, or soda I believe. Which isn't bad for today prices. I ordered many things here and yet the highlight of this place is the salt n pepper pork chops. The pork is very tasty with just the right salt and spice. I will order this again! I also really like their milk tea, it's Hong Kong Style which it is hard to find some days. If your in the area for lunch I would strongly recommend this place! This is definitely a hidden gem that serves authentic Chinese (Cantonese food). I'll be back to try the bake pork chop spaghetti!
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful customer service. We came late and they were about to close. (~30 minutes before). They didn't rush us or gave us looks when it got closer to closing time. They offered us a complimentary egg puff which was super kind of them! I really enjoyed the salt and pepper tofu. The seasoning was flavorful. I didn't enjoy the mango pudding though.
google avatar

Yelp
This place hits the spot after u come back from clubbing or drinking. A great late night comfort food or dessert spot. I love the mango egg puff and the Hong Kong milk tea is a must 10/5 on both. The fried pigs intestine is bomb as well 6/5 for sure. Chow fun has good flavor 4/5. Service is good n fast even when they busy.
google avatar

Yelp
Fresh pulled noodle dish was yummy and had that chow fun flavor from the wok. They offer a cute frozen milk tea bear to add to your drink!

Yelp
Calling all Hong Kong cafe fans in Sacramento! Yummy Cafe hits the spot for those nostalgic flavors and classic dishes. They have a wide menu with all the favorites, from Hong Kong style toast to baked pork chops. The portions are generous and the prices are fair, making it a great value.

Yelp
Love the Chinese restaurant here! Been coming here for 15 yrs now! Everything stay the same! Great taste! Must try the red bean ice drink ! Delicious

Yelp
Service was okay. I ordered the wonton noodle soup and it felt really bland so I would not recommend it.

Yelp
I love going here for their meals special. The service is great and it ambiance remind me of cafeteria setting. The food is delicious and they open late after partying or going out. It added more items recently that should try when I'm in the area. I do recommend this place for good food and cheap eat,

Chris B.

Yelp
Stopped by when returning from Tahoe. Food is quite HK style, tasty. Good service. Reasonable price too! Will visit again.

Yelp
Hong Kong style Chinese restaurant . Good Chinese food along with some English inspired dishes like pork chops and spaghetti. Menu styled after Hong Kong late night snacks. Good service , they remember your special requests .

Yelp
Salt & pepper tofu was delicious. Soft inside and crunchy outside. Just right salt level. Chow fun was yummy and fun to eat. We got the dry option and it was delicious. Wait time as bit long. Dining area looks bit cluttered but not a show stopper. Got it to-go.

Yelp
On a Saturday it was near 8pm and we were starving. Up to me to pick a good grub spot. It was cool with the warmer weather pulling back and dropping some rain earlier in the day. It seemed as we all agreed on some warm or hot soup. Asking my teen and giving her the option of Pho, ramen, noodle soup or congee, she chose congee. I found a bevy of options and settled on Yummy Cafe. Upon arrival inside, I noticed I have been here a few times over the past 20 years. We ordered a bowl of fish fillet congee or fish fillet congee with preserved egg. I got some Chinese donut to go with the congee. In Cantonese we call congee "jook". Nourishing rice soup good any time of the year but especially when it is cold outside. I later added a dry beef chow fun. Also, an item that caught our eye was the Hong Kong toast. We got the one with peanut butter. Congee: Awesome. Nice and hot. Perfect flavoring. An ample amount of fish fillet pieces. Delicious for sure. Dry beef chow fun: Not bad at all. It had a slight smoky wok flavor. Not as good as some I have had. Too many onions. A tad light on beef. Not a lot. Just a tad. Peanut butter condensed milk toast: A solid rendition of this HK fav. Sweet and and peanut buttery goodness! When I was 10 and visiting my late grandma in HK, I remember this being served for breakfast by her servants/cook. Also fresh fruit, English tea, Horlick's, Ovaltine, Tang, Marie's crackers and more food and drink she had on hand. A must try! In summary, this is a small authentic spot serving up HK cuisine. Oh man, so many items I wanted to try. They also do a baked spaghetti over pork chop! Some creamy pasta, noodle soups, wonton soups, many kinds of congee and great HK style desserts including banana split with mango and green tea ice cream! They also serve teas, boba and other drinks. Daily specials also. I can't wait to return and try more. Hopefully sooner than later! The best part is......they open until 1:30AM on weekdays and 2:30AM on Friday and Saturday for night owls! Hard to find late night eats in Sac except near drinking holes. This is a true winner!

Yelp
While most places are increasing prices and charging alot for food. This establishment amazes me that they are able to keep price low and start serve great tasting dishes. Servers are quick, speedy, and attentive. This is really a good place for the budget minded individual who wants good food.

Yelp
Good Hong Kong style restaurant around the area. Affordable prices with delicious food

Yelp
After moving to the States for 3 years, I have never been to anywhere reminds me of Hong Kong like Yummy Cafe. Staffs are really nice and they will actually engage with you to recommend what's good on the menu. My personal favourite is the black pepper stir-fry spaghetti. Flavour is rich and the portion is huge. Perfect for my post-workout protein intake. I Love their milk tea as well. It's not like Thai milk tea and Taiwanese boba milk tea. It is THE milk tea, Hong-Kong-styled.

Kristal X.

Yelp
Nice place for HK style cafe and service, very nostalgic feeling. Food is decent, good price, enjoyed myself here!

Yelp
We love lunch at this place because it comes with drinks. Love their daily specials. They been around forever. Great place to go after zoo, very kids friendly

Yelp
I've been coming here for over 5 years. The only HK cafe I know so far in Sac. Best HK comfort food hands down. They open til very late and thats just one perk! So while I chose to hit the cafe when I'm in town, I took a trip down memory lane. Sure, the cafe is all newly renovated and whatnot, but the nostalgia is there and the building still stands. New owners, but all hail to them for keeping a wonderful memory alive. Big menu, and I love most of their desserts. I probably tried the whole menu by now. Egg puffs are eclectic. You will not find them anywhere else that makes them like these. I used to love their rice dishes, especially the fried rice. If I remembered them years ago, they are worth remembering now. Some of the dishes are a hit and miss. I normally avoid the salty dishes, as they tend to be overly salty. In any case, I would definitely let the servers know if there's anything wrong so I would have an enjoyable meal. No need for that yet. Servers are very attentive and sweet. They tend to get a little stare-y though. I don't mind though. Since I have a partner who's from Hong Kong himself, I decided to take him here for the first time to see if these comfort foods really hit home for him! And it sure did! We proceeded to order curry fish balls, icecream red bean tea, and the original egg puffs. My partner says these are what he used to get in HK at vendors on the street. He would tell me his wholesome experiences and it sure made a nostalgic moment for him right then and there. He hasn't been back to HK in years. Egg puffs are a hit here, be sure to get them. Many varieties available. Strawberry, mango, and whatever else they have. Icecream red bean slush was yummy! But my partner says not enough slush for him. Nonetheless delicious. Curry fish balls were okay. But it did make my partner snack on it enjoyably. So there ya have it, good ol' HK comfort food. Food that sparks nostalgia: the real definition of comfort food. Definitely will find our way back. This place is seriously underrated.
google avatar

Robin T.

Yelp
The food is pretty good here. We just got takeout, so can't speak to table service, but the takeout was ready as promised and hot.
google avatar

Saria B.

Yelp
Giving 4 stars because the first 2 times I ordered here the black mushroom and bean curd was delicious. The black mushroom( rehydrated shitakes) were soft and tasty and the bean curd was in 1 inch chunks, custard like and good. since then we have ordered the same dish again twice. Now the same dish has hard mushroom, obviously not soaked long enough in boiling water. And the bean curd is not good or like custard. I am sad. I cannot eat here again. I do no eat meat, so it was something I could order while my husband would have meat. Oh well, the search is on for good, consistent Chinese.
google avatar

Yelp
I do appreciate the Hong Kong comfort food that Yummy Cafe serves up. There are not a lot of places that offer this type of food in Sacto. Plus they do serve up the basic Chinese food, but I don't come here for that or the boba. What the heck is HK comfort food you may ask. Well, google it. My take is in post WW II Hong Kong experienced a change to the food scene due to the mix of cultures residing in HK. British, American, and Chinese mix of comfort food. Thus you get one of my favorite dishes of baked pork chop over spaghetti. The chop is boneless and is served sliced on top of spaghetti and covered with tomato purée (not marinara). It is baked and broiled a bit and served in a stainless steel tray. It is Served hot with a slight crisp top crust. I love the slight sound of a crackle that the crust makes when I dig into it with the long edge of the fork prong. The flavors are basic. Yummy Cafe has it as a lunch special $8.25 and comes with your choice of milk tea, lemon tea, coffee, or soda. The iced lemon tea is fresh made but they put syrup sweetener in it. It was tasty, but really sweet. Another favorite of mine is the egg puff. I first came here nearly 20 years ago. That was the first time I ever tasted a egg puff. It was delicious and is still. Their version is not overly sweet or vanilla tasting. It comes out hot and on a wire rack, the rack allows it to crisp up as it cools. The egg puff crackles as you tear each bubble off. Another favorite is the HK French toast. Sliced white bread sandwich slices dipped in egg batter and pan fried in butter. Decadent foolish deliciousness. I like the peanut butter version. The menu choices are eclectic and not your typical Chinese fare. However, if you don't speak Cantonese or Mandarin, it may be difficult to communicate especially if you have questions about the menu. The staff speaks English but limited. The menu is huge. My advice is not to overthink the menu. Plus if you have food allergies or diet restrictions, this is not your type of place. Plus the interior is basic, simple bare bones. The furniture is several decades old. The place is a hole in the wall. No cute fancy furnishings or decor. The tv is set to the Mandarin channel. Parking is easy peasy since they have their own lot with plenty of parking in the back.

Yelp
What a nice surprise to finally have delicious Hainanese Chicken Rice in the Sacramento area! Chicken cooked just right with the aroma rice topped with green onion/ ginger sauce - simply divine.

Yelp
Good food for the price. Love the lunch specials, plenty to choose from. Give it a try!

Yelp
Nice little place. It stays busy. An interesting selection of foods. I only came in for a while while I was waiting for someone, so I only got a Thai iced tea. I'd like to try some of the other things on the menu later. The tea was very nice.

Yelp
Very bad service . I was given overly saturated meat with to much vinegar an soysauce. Very bad experience . Seems they chose who to speak english with. Jokes were made telling my wife n i that rat meat is sweeter than pork. Im not sure if this fellas worked their but he wondered around n helped clean tables. They refused to hear my concern regarding the food . I didnt leave a tip due to poor service an 2 days later they took an extra 5 dollars for their tip from my account.

Yelp
I loved the service I got while I was eating here and also the food was quite immaculate and the light gives me a childhood memory feeling.

Yelp
We used to come here many years ago during our college years. Their food is affordable with good portion size. We stopped coming due to one incidence. We ordered the eggettes, and the lady who was making it was on the phone. We had a feeling that it was going to get burned due to inattention. When she brought it over, I flipped it over to look at the bottom and sure enough it was burned! And she still brought it to us knowing it is burned. Of course we asked for them to make another one! And we have not been back since. We recently returned to Sac to visit, and decided to give this place another try. It was a weekday lunch and they had lunch special menu. Portion size is smaller than dinner, but comes with free drinks. For the drinks, we had both the ice lemon tea and the HK milk tea. Both were super delicious and authentic HK style taste! Their food were good, too! We ordered the wonton noodle soup, scrambled egg with beef over rice, and sparerib with black bean sauce. Everything went well during our time there. Staff was nice and allowed us to take the leftover drinks we had to go. Minus one point because we ordered the French toast over condensed milk. By the time we were all done eating, it still hasn't come yet. When we asked, they said they're making it, which has been over 30 minutes. We had to hit the road to return home since we didn't live in Sac anymore and asked them to cancel it. They insisted that they were making it and suggested for us to take it to go. If we took it to go, it will just turn out soggy and disgusting since we had a distance to drive. Well we waited another 10 minutes or so and it was still not ready. We had to REALLY insist for them to cancel the order and take it out of our check. Otherwise, we really enjoyed our time there. Definitely would like to come back next time when we're back at Sac and try their other dishes and French toast.

Yelp
Looking @ these yelp reviews made me decide to go here because the food looked delicious on photos, however it did not live up to my expectations. I ordered the baked spaghetti w/ pork chop and it's definitely not like your average spaghetti. We also had chow-fun and it was kind of bland. The only meal that was good was the spam and eggs over rice, but you can't really mess that simple dish up. Also, the mango crepe and mango sago w/ coconut was decent. The pricing for everything was actually not bad, but overall I wouldn't go here again. I never been to a restaurant that I didn't somewhat like their food.

Patty W.

Yelp
They have new chief. Love the new food taste. More than just salty in other Chinese restaurants. Especially like the stir fried noodles and rice Not oily. Layers of tastes. Hurray!
google avatar

Stephanie Y.

Yelp
Good food for a good price and they're open hella late (: love their variety of (Asian) desserts, especially the sago desserts. They're pretty fast, but definitely not friendly and can be hard to understand (not very good English). Also, pictures of food posted all over the walls are written in Chinese. Feels kinda dirty and you should definitely wipe down your utensils, particularly the spoons. I got two spoons that I was able to scrape a brown layer off of. The first one, that I had them replace, looked like it had been hiding behind/under a fridge for a month.. Overall, can't beat their variety and hours. Note: it can get pretty busy (nearly packed house) late at night (ie after 9)
google avatar

Henry L.

Yelp
Nice cafe! Probably the only restaurant open late night after 9pm in the area, this place serves legit chinese food. The menu is huge with lots of selections, and the food is served hot with just the right amount of seasoning. Tasty but not too oily. The portions are pretty big too, and the price reasonable. The staff is friendly. The decor is nice too, especially at night, where they decorated the "patio" outside with nice outdoor lights. There were several folks who actually chose to eat at the tables outside, even though there were lots of table inside. The atmosphere outside is actually quite nice at night--cool breeze, with no bugs or pests, and glowy hipster lights :) Overall, will definitely come back more often!
