One of the best spots for Hawaiian food down south, Yummy Kitchen always delivers a satisfying meal for your cravings. It's a laid-back restaurant with consistently good food quality, which automatically makes it a go-to on my list. Everything I've tried so far has been made well, but I always take note of how great their sides are compared to similar places. I'm usually disappointed with at least one of the sides at other Hawaiian spots but Yummy Kitchen takes care to make their sides as important to the meal as the mains. The japchae is chewy with a good balance of sweet and savory, and the mac salad is perfect for balancing out some of their saltier dishes. I also like that the sauce on the potato side is not overly sweet or thick. They all go perfectly together with whatever you order.
On my last visit I got the kalua pig plate lunch and the garlic fried chicken special. Kalua pig is delicious, rich, and salty. After a while it can even get a little too salty, as kalua pig tends to be, but as long as I've got my rice and sides, I don't mind the extra salt. I took my order to-go but the garlic fried chicken was still decently crispy even after the drive home. The garlic soy sauce was exactly what I expected, both flavors were very present in the sticky, sweet sauce. The wings and drums are a good size and I was feeling full after just a few pieces. I did find myself craving something to eat with the chicken to cut through the strong flavors, something like pickled radish. The radish kimchi comes with the fried chicken plate lunch but not the special, unfortunately. In general, I might recommend ordering extra sides to mellow out the big flavors of some of their dishes, also because their sides are very tasty anyway.
Everything on the menu looks good and at this point I trust them enough to make all their dishes well. If you're a fan of both Hawaiian and Korean food, this would be the perfect restaurant for you to try next. A real good lunch spot to make your coworkers jealous.
