Best Dishes D.C. Editors Ate This Week: October 24 | Eater DC

"On a recent visit, the sleeper hit at Logan Circle institution Yum’s II Carryout was the steak and cheese. Neon-yellow signage spelling out its “Chinese food-seafood-subs” tagline leads the way to a beacon for walk-in orders past 2 a.m. Dozens upon dozens of menu items listed around the perimeter of the square-shaped interior can be intimidating, but I took the cashier’s suggestion and went with the gooey, six-inch hoagie ($8.45), jam-packed with steak and all-the-right ratios of lettuce, tomato, and mayo from start to finish. The recommended move was also getting General Tso’s with sauce on the side to do DIY dunks of the crispy chicken bites as you please. Lo mein comes eight ways, but after all that meat I’m glad I went with the vegetable kind. The small portion was still big, and the slippery noodles basically busted through the carton upon opening ($8.95). While waiting inside for my heavy to-go bag, the crowd was a rotating door of food delivery drivers, off-the-clock industry folks, and couples." - Tierney Plumb

Everyone was nice when I walked in. The cashier really took their time to make sure my order was correct. I was really hungry when I ordered. I got the Sweet and Sour chicken (Large) and substituted my fried rice for Lo mein for an upcharge. I also got an Egg roll and an order of Crab Rangoons. The Sweet and Sour Chicken was delicious! They were so hot and so fresh. The chicken was cooked golden brown-perfect! My Crab Rangoons filling ratio was nice. Each time I bit into a Rangoon, I tasted crab! They showed alot of love for the Rangoons, as I had a total of 12 (usually only get 8 at most take-out places). I was really surprised on how good the Egg roll was. It was big and juicy, and was seasoned correctly and you could tell right away that it was hand made and not previously frozen. The Lo mein was no doubt the weakest item of the meal. Don't get me wrong the veggies in the noodles and the noodles themselves were perfect. The problem was that they didn't have good seasoning on them. They were prob average at most but I still ate all of the noodles, so that's telling. Overall, I would recommend this establishment. The price was great and for a Chinese take out restaurant it's pretty good. Ratings Egg Roll [9/10] Sweet and Sour Chicken [9/10] Crab Rangoons [8/10] Lo Mein [7/10]

Google
My coworker ordered me a combination LO mein, I found a hard gristle like object mixed in with my food. Thank god I didn’t swallow this. This is my second time finding an object or hair in my food when ordering lomein or Singapore noodles. They were accommodating when trying to rectify the issue but I’m done at this point with trusting them with my food. It’s Russian roulette with food safety from this establishment.

Google
Pictured: 1 of 3 undercooked chicken wings served to me of the 5 I ordered. It's a good thing I brought the food home to eat so I could microwave and not waste it otherwise. I was amazed my order was completed so quickly. It didn't even seem like it took 5 minutes. Suggestion: order your wings fried hard. If you don't, you were warned. I personally have no need to return to such an establishment that can't be bothered to serve me safe food and I posted this review for the public benefit.

Google
Nice people and the food is incredible. Great Chinese takeout, especially late at night.

Google
Went for a late dinner at like 12:30 and ordered like 9 items. Was very impressed by the flavor and quality of the food. Based off the existing reviews my expectation was kinda low but the food was sooo good!! Good price for the size of the items as well. Def will be going again !!

Google
It feels like their chicken is fake, weirdly large wings. I ordered buffalo wings, they weren’t Buffalo! They gave me regular wings and put mumbo sauce on top! Crazy. Some of the wings smelt bad too. Could’ve def got sick I stopped eating after the first bad smelling wing. It’s hard to trust their meat but very dissapointed in them giving me wings I didn’t order

byron S.

Google
An official late night Chinese takeout that offers really good food after work or after the club.

Ricky A.

Google
Don't eat here. I ordered food for friends and not only was my food (combination fried rice) not good but everyone else's was either bland or with a bad taste to say the least. My recommendation is to go next door.

Yelp
I got the chicken wings and fried rice. It was so-so. Absolutely nothing to rave about. The typical DC carryout service was in rotation. No smiles or welcomes or greeting to show an appreciation for my patronage. But, it is what it is. It's a carryout. No fine dining or lavish lighting here. Pick up and go is on the menu. After the fact, I was told I should have tried the fried wings and french fries with ketchup, salt, pepper, and mumbo sauce. I was also encouraged to try the steak and cheese. So, the next time I'm in the area of 14th and P St., NW, I will venture into Yum's II carry out one more time to give them another shot. In the meantime, if you get there before me, happy eating!

Britt J.

Yelp
Personally I enjoyed the wings. They were seasoned and fried to perfection. I just wished I had a little bit more Mumbo sauce. I did remember to ask for salt & pepper on my fries. We enjoyed everything! Service was quick! It is a true authentic carry out without a dine- in option.
google avatar

Gilbert D.

Yelp
For the need it fills, the food is excellent. This is a bare-bones takeout establishment, so service and ambience really do not enter the discussion.
google avatar

Blake N.

Yelp
The lady at the front was absolutely rude in her response. They had no chicken options. Meanwhile half their menu is chicken dishes. I understand being out of the offered options but the absolute disregard for any level of customer service AND THEN to be so rude to those of us ordering food was not necessary.

Christopher R.

Yelp
Fast and tasty -- I have not one complaint! I was greeted and thanked. Wait was under 10 minutes. Food was fresh. Even after commuting home and stalling, moments later, everything was still piping hot. I ordered the chicken wings and fries with mumbo sauce on the side. Caveat first: this was my first time trying mumbo sauce, and as suspected with any ketchup-based sauce, I personally don't prefer it, but don't regret trying it. The chicken was where it's at! It had that unique Chinese takeout taste -- crispy, juicy, and seasoned well! Fries were fries -- fresh with pillowy insides. Overall, I enjoyed everything. Will definitely be back!

Leroy R.

Yelp
A solid meal after a night out. The space isn't spectacle but it's a large open space to order your food and go. Service was nice. I enjoyed my food but if I go again I'll try something different.
google avatar

Connor D.

Yelp
The definition of mid. Prices are mid. Food is mid, it's reliable but mid. Open late which is good.
google avatar

Audrey D.

Yelp
This is my favorite late-night establishment in the world. The combination lo mein is excellent and the staff works so hard. Lovely ambiance and a short wait time! I love Yums!
google avatar

Richard L.

Yelp
For under $10 you can get your fix of fried chicken and a side of fries or fried rice. I came here specifically to try the mambo sauce. The wings were fried perfectly. The sauce itself was on the sweet side, but I can see where the hype comes from. The fried rice was decent but nothing special.
google avatar

Chad B.

Yelp
This is my go to spot for wings and jumbo sauce I haven't had any of there actual Chinese food, cheesesteak egg rolls are amazing and you have to get a half & half
google avatar

Ruth D.

Yelp
Second time coming for some wonton soup. It appears to be a popular location for standard Chinese takeout ambiance. There's no seating so it's primarily designed for carryout. I've ordered in the shop both times I came and my food was ready within 5-10mins. I'll be interested to try other menu items one day.
google avatar

Shanice G.

Yelp
Take it for what it is - corner Chinese spot so idk why people are reviewing like they're dining at capital grill. Wings were your typical Chinese chicken wings nice and crispy - piping hot when they were delivered through Uber eats. Mumbo sauce wasn't my favorite but served its purpose. It was really sour and had a ketchupy taste. I don't like ketchup like that. Rice was honestly NOT GOOD - it was like yellow overcooked mushy rice. I wanted fried rice. If the rice was good I would give 4 stars.
google avatar

Michelle E.

Yelp
I ordered shrimp fried rice by ubereats and it tasted so bad. Plain and shrimp is spoiled. I would never order again. WASTE OF MONEY!
google avatar

Donna-Marie T.

Yelp
I work in the neighborhood and when I want a cheap lunch this is my got to. If you have a change order ahead of time as they get busy during lunch. Not much of a restaurant but a true carry out with a window to order with no drama. I've had everything from the lunch specials to the wings and enjoy every time. Make sure you ask for sauces if you want. Can't go wrong ordering the basics.
google avatar

David Y.

Yelp
Before coming to DC, I was unfamiliar with the concept of a Chinese takeout place that would also sell cheesesteaks and sandwiches. While I haven't yet tried those, I can say that the Chinese food is a very excellent middle-of-the-road. It is cheap, both in price and in quality. I ordered a beef and broccoli combination plate (which came with a hefty side of rice, a spring roll, and a fortune cookie), and paid $14.25. Quite good for a place right on 14th St. And while the food is flavorful, you can taste the freshness (or lack thereof) everywhere, from the too-soft texture of the beef to the unsettling hardness of the spring roll shell. It's just slightly off, the edible equivalent of a fake Gucci bag. Nevertheless, it works in a pinch! I have found myself here multiple times, and it has always met expectations. One just needs to keep those expectations well-grounded.

Yelp
Yum's never ceases to hit! Wings, fries and mumbo sauce were delicious. Mumbo sauce is going to be different everywhere but this is some of my favorite. I gave a four because my friend did not like the fish fillet. The fried rice that came with it was really tasty but the fish wasn't impressive. It wasn't rubbery or bad per se but nothing special.

Addison C.

Yelp
This is a go to spot for me when I want a quick, cheap, and satisfying meal. Food wise, it's what you expect from a Chinese take out dive, but the quality is actually quite good and the portions are decent. They're also quick with preparing your order in a handful of minutes My go to are the 3 piece whole wings. I've made it a mission to try as many wings from as many DC carry outs as I can, and Yum's is still at the top of my list. Overall, this place doesn't pretend to be anything it's not, you know what you're getting, and it's a good deal.
google avatar

Hunter B.

Yelp
A DC staple so I had to try it out. I went asking for the wings with mumbo sauce. A couple of minutes later I was given freshly made wings covered in the sauce. They were great and I would love to stop by and grab more again. It is cheap and good food so not a bad place to get food.
google avatar

Anna F.

Yelp
Always unbelievable - sober or not. Cannot speak more highly of Yums. The Mongolian beef is truly incredible, and the general tsos is too.
google avatar

Jordan N.

Yelp
This is really junk food. Affordable carb-heavy, take-out Americanized Chinese food that happens to also sell a lot of fried chicken and mambo sauce. If I was going to eat here again, I may just get the fried chicken - and without the mambo sauce too considering it makes the crispy chicken breading mushy and the flavor of the sauce isn't really all that (unless if you just wanted to get a sense of something that's only-in-DC - not worth it IMHO though). But for Chinese, you have more than one better options within walking distance.
google avatar

S J.

Yelp
Food is delicious very large portions, and very fresh as well. Great carryout place. There may be a long lines in the evening, but it's well worth the wait

Curtis B.

Yelp
They open and close when they want hours on web and door don't mean a thing prices are all over the place high as hell and don't match web and have seen rats running in front on store on sidewalk. I would not recommend to anyone
google avatar

Marcus P.

Yelp
Was freaking awesome! I am from the DMV so for a chance to be in the area, grab some chicken wings and Mumbo sauce, steak egg and cheese sub, shrimp fried rice with extra eggs and onions and then fries yes I gained a whole 1lb for 3 days!
google avatar

Dennis D.

Yelp
Unassuming American Chinese carry out spot. The folks are from Fuzhou. The thing is... DC local food is known for this sauce called Mumbo sauce. It's like a tangy BBQ sauce, little sweet, little smokey. Has its own character. Lots of local people said good things about this one. It's nothing fancy but I liked it. Most people that visit DC don't know about this, but I saw a lot of YouTube content about this and had to try.

JohnandPaige L.

Yelp
All around pretty gross. We got chicken fried rice, pretty tasteless and sesame chicken. The chicken was soggy and mushy with terrible quality meat. I could've cut it with a spoon. YUCK! The best thing was the white rice with enough soy sauce to give it flavor. Skip this one.

Dr B.

Yelp
Service, food, not what I ordered and when calling back, the lady was rude, accused me of not knowing they put their own noodle (not sure what) instead of wonton soup and not wonton's noodles. First time going to this restaurant. What appeared to be meat was half cut up and then others large slivers of what may be steak. I asked for Steak, Green Peppers and Tomato. When you only have an hour for lunch. Egg roll hard and looked like someone just threw them in oven just to warm them. I happen i called a lady. On the phone call she was rude, telling me to bring food back. Not caring about customers.
google avatar

Melissa C.

Yelp
First time trying it, the flavor is a mix of sweet, sour, tangy, ketchup BBQ taste. I liked it but I will def try from somewhere else to compare!

Dalton H.

Yelp
Service is horrible. Called and the woman hung up on me. I had also tried to go another time and they weren't even open when it was within their posted operating hours.

Kylie S.

Yelp
I Was recommend by many to try Yums and looking forward to it but was highly disappointed. First thing they got my order wrong next there general tso was SUPER chewy like rubber I couldn't finish it and threw away half. What I will say is there chicken wings are good and steak and cheese egg rolls . If visiting I would recommend saving your money and going else where.

Darrell B.

Yelp
Not good. Lie about their hours (always changing and not what's posted). Service is rude and dismissive no matter the hour. Would not recommend.
google avatar

Bernard P.

Yelp
Food delicious, service was quick and efficient, the Ambiance could be better, they should invest in just upgrading their look. I know it's a staple in DC, but a modern look just makes the waiting time nicer. I mean no sitting anywhere just a big white space that needs reno. Other than that keep making that amazing food!
google avatar

GC H.

Yelp
Great service at the window. A little pricey for what I had hoped - $12 and $13 entrees. But the food was excellent.
google avatar

Phantom J.

Yelp
The wings was soggy and not crispy, the rice was not so great, the steak egg rolls was not the best. Maybe the specialize in something else. Service was great.
google avatar

Marlon T.

Yelp
I saw a short documentary about Mambo Sauce on YouTube and I had to get some. Apparently, if you've never had Mambo Sauce, you've never been to D.C. So, like any true Yelper, I Yelp'ed "Mambo Sauce" and did an evaluation as to which is the best spot to get some. My criteria included: 1) Many reviews 2) Star rating 3) Location 4) Review highlights Get some chicken wings, fried rice, and Mambo Sauce. My assessment is that Mambo Sauce is pretty much just ketchup and sweet & sour sauce. Also, Mambo Sauce must be obtained from a random Chinese carryout joint. Ideally, you should be a least a little bit intoxicated before checking out a place like Yum's II because this type of food is more enhanced that way. Have you not experienced D.C. if you've never had Mambo Sauce? No.
google avatar

Devaneé T.

Yelp
DC is known for their MAMBO sauce! Come try it on fried chicken! it will not disappoint! Quick Service and ambiance!
google avatar

N L.

Yelp
Highly disappointed with the much heralded DC Mambo sauce. This sauce was like one of the main reasons I came to DC. The sauce really had no flavor. On my next visit, I'll try a few more spots for a final verdict.
google avatar

Thomas C.

Yelp
Great food. Travel to DC to explore the area. They had great service and making sure I got what I need.
google avatar

Sandra L.

Yelp
Amazing take out! One of the only options that stays open late. I will come here all the time. Exactly what you imagine- cheap Chinese takeout. A favorite spot.
google avatar

Bunnie B.

Yelp
I like my takeout hot and flavorful. Yum's II is one of my favorite chinese restaurants for fried chicken wings..((No Mumbo Sauce..!!))..and Chicken/Shrimp Lo Mein. The cost is under $25.00 for both and are satisfyingly delicious.
google avatar

Brice G.

Yelp
They don't wash their hands and be touching raw meet and touching their hair. I work across the street so I come about once, maybe twice per week. I tried to order Shrimp lo mein lunch special which ends at 3:00PM, I walked in at 2:56 standing in line for the person ahead of me finished ordering. When I went to order it was exactly 3:00PM and his clock is 5 minutes fast, it said 3:05PM, he wouldn't honor the lunch special so I left. I ordered the same dish from a spot which costed more but their customer service is a lot better.
google avatar

Amy Amanda A.

Yelp
Great authentic Chinese takeout spot that offers wings and Mumbo sauce. It's a no frills kind of place with nowhere to sit but the food is exactly what we were looking for.

Sueli G.

Yelp
Yum's is the ideal last minute takeout restaurant. With an unbeatable upbeat attitude as soon as you walk in, and an art deco interior, it's a must-visit any time you are hungry for Chinese food. The veggie tofu lo mein is my go to - it is the perfect ratio of fried tofu to veggie. My friend Jacob is always there to finish my leftovers, because their portions are huge!
google avatar

Aaron P.

Yelp
Best Chinese food in the core downtown area that isn't formal dining. Tad expensive but healthy portions. No nonsense
google avatar

Lizzy B.

Yelp
Everything about this place is awesome except I don't know what's going on with their fried rice. I wouldn't even consider it fried honestly....it had no soy sauce or any seasoning whatsoever and was so over cooked the shrimp was even mushy. I'm super disappointed, the food here is usually AMAZING! Steak and cheese egg rolls, wings, mumbo sauce, even the half & half tea is great! But the rice just was not it.
google avatar

Tuba B.

Yelp
This used to be a staple for me. It was special to come down an grab some Yums an go back uptown before it got cold. Today I went an simply ordered wings and fried rice. This is the worst fried rice I have ever had. Fried WHERE??? Never coming here again.
google avatar

Juleisa B.

Yelp
This establishment has a mouse problem. As I was ordering my food I was a mouse take a piece of food and run away. Grosss yall are eating rat gems

Shawn S.

Yelp
Terrible customer service, we called on the phone and the lady was quick telling me things I didn't order them gave us a price and hung up without me being able to tell her that I wanted 6 wings instead of 4 I had to call back and it was even harder the second time because she just wanted to rush me off the phone , I'm unsure if it was busy at the moment but I'd rather be put on hold or be told that it's busy and to call back in a couple mins then rushed while I'm trying to place a order and give a company money. I won't leave a name on the lady due to understanding everyone has their days but if I get the same attitude next time I go I will be leaving a complaint to the manager on shift

Danica G.

Yelp
Hits the spot for cheap Chinese food, but beware, there's no prices on the signs inside and the price on their paper menus doesn't match the actual prices

Imani Z.

Yelp
-5 rating. Avoid this place ppl. They're out here poisoning us. My husband ate there last night around 10 or 11 and now he's throwing up, sweating and his bowels are loose. If you could cook your own food please do it.
