Austin’s Best Breakfast Trailer Paperboy Moves Over to South Lamar | Eater Austin

"I see that Yuyo, whose chef Maribel Rivero is a James Beard Award semifinalist this year, is adding weekend brunch beginning Saturday, March 2; offerings include Andean corn cakes with chancaca syrup, a take on eggs benedict served on yuca cheese bread with jamon royal and aji amarillo hollandaise, a lucuma-and-yogurt bowl, and brunch cocktails such as passion fruit and orange mimosas and a pisco Bloody Mary; brunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekends." - Nadia Chaudhury

Statesman Is Enchanted by Meats and Kimchi at Charm Korean BBQ | Eater Austin

"At the Peruvian restaurant Yuyo, I appreciated the “light and airy” decor, which gestures to indigeneity without feeling like cultural appropriation, though some dishes lacked depth. The quinotto swims in a nutty, fragrant broth with vegetables, but I couldn’t get a solid answer on whether it was vegetarian or vegan. The cebiche clásico was a real game-changer: bright, tangy, with a harmonious balance of acid and heat — fleshy, firm striped bass topped with crunchy cancha and microgreens, invigorating and exciting. Drinks-wise, the Purple Drank (pisco and chicha morada) was more exciting to me than the pisco sour, which tasted like triple sec. I was disappointed by the ají de gallina empanadas, which were mushy and tasted off (though I ate the accompanying salsa straight). I’m also worried about the location, which felled Yuyo’s parent company’s burger cantina El Sapo and predecessor Flat Top, but I hold out tentative hope for the restaurant." - Erin Russell

Google
House Lo mein flavoring and ingredients were great. Just a little dry. Disappointed in the spider roll because it has imitation crab in it and not one restaurant I've had that at has used imitation crab so that was disgusting. Server was great , took my order to go very sweet. Really disappointed in the imitation crab though. Would definitely be back

We had dinner here around 6:00 on 7/16. We were warmly welcomed and immediately seated. The menu was quite large, so after perusing it a bit, we settled on the miso soup, the cream cheese wantons, the fried shrimp shumai, and the tom yum soup for our appetizers. The wantons and shumai were outstanding. The miso soup was on par with others. But the tom yum soup was mostly just bean sprouts and two tiny overcooked shrimp. I would not recommend that one. Then for our entrees, we chose general tso’s chicken, hibachi tilapia, beef udon, and the Chinese cabbage with mushrooms. The chicken was on par, the udon was okay, and the tilapia was excellent. But the cabbage and mushrooms were unexpectedly delightful. They were cooked perfectly, seasoned expertly, and we enjoyed the garlic flavor throughout. The portions were huge, and a great value for the price. We all had to take some to-go. While not everything hit on all cylinders, we still enjoyed our food and had a good time!

We celebrated my birthday at this place. The service was good, our waitress was very helpful and patient as she waited for us to decide what we wanted. The food was very good and satisfying. The portions were more than enough. We’ll definitely go back and recommend it to our local friends and visitors. It is a fair price for a Japanese restaurant.

RHALLETE J.

Google
It's not too bad. The place has a bar and dining area with pleasant staff. They are welcoming and very attentive. There were also a lot of take-out and delivery services constantly going in-n-out. The food is good--a Chinese interpretation of a Japanese cuisine for the American palate. I say that in a good way. Though my Japanese experience after living there has fine-tuned my taste to the authenticity of the cuisine--Yuyo is not bad. I had the Spicy Ramen and Dynamite Roll. The spice has a very Chinese influence however the sushi roll played a perfect compliment as it cooled the heat. It's a nice place to hang-out for a while and eat a nice meal.

Google
The service was prompt and the food was fresh when served which is always a plus. They have a very wide selection of Japanese cuisine & the restaurant decor was nice. Also! our waitress was very sweet and helpful as far as answering questions about the menu.

Google
They always have great service and have many vegetarian options! Their noodle dishes are great and their hot and sour soup is vegetarian! I can also have seafood so I got their Tom Yum soup which was absolutely wonderful. It is actually a meal in itself and is very filling even if you’re just having this soup.

Beautiful ambiance, even the menus were very nice. Food was delicious Many sushi 🍣 options and a variety of alternatives for those that are not fans of sushi. Friendly service and very clean.

Yelp
The wontons came out very quickly and were oh so delicious. We did change out the seaweed for soy paper on the creamy spider roll and it was the best choice. Service was quick and she was very attentive. The drinks did take a little bit but we didn't mind waiting since they both exceeded our expectations. The ambiance was classic Japanese style. Very warm and inviting! I'll be back!

Yelp
I ate here last year and it was good food, good sushi and all that and I was on a date and thank you for the food

Yelp
The first time I visited was with a local friend on her recommendation for my Japanese fix. I wasn't especially impressed then, so I decided to give them a second chance and visited with a family member. That really cemented my position on Yuyo - cannot recommend and won't be coming back. My family member got a hibachi chicken dish. It was about the quality of Chinese takeout, but nearly twice the price. Our waiter, who was amazing by the way, asked if we wanted a to-go box. Later, my family member confided in me that the food wasn't good enough to even bother taking home for later. We had spring rolls to kick us off, but I've had much better, even at local Chinese takeout places. I ordered sushi for myself, but they really botched the roll and presentation here. I picked the Drunken Monkey roll, and while the flavor was okay, the pieces were entirely too big. They could have made the roll twice as long and half as thick for a more enjoyable eating experience. As it is, the menu featured only generic stock photos not representing anything on the sushi selections so it's hard to know what you're getting. The atmosphere in the restaurant was fairly drab and dark. Staff was friendly, but prices were high for such low quality and poor presentation. I personally would not come back, and note that this place is one of the farthest from authentic Japanese that I've ever been to.

Yelp
We went to go on a date for a late lunch. We showed up at 1 and did not get our food until over an hour later. Keep in mind half of the food requires no cooking. A couple minutes in to the visit I put in an order for a drink and did not receive that drink until 5 minutes before we left. Still charging for the drink and providing the only excuse that there was only one person making the drinks. There were only two other tables there. For a relatively nice restaurant I am appalled at the lack of communication and service.

Yelp
Great food. Nice and quiet atmosphere . Great service. Go hungry you will get more food that you can eat

Yelp
Food is great ! but the only thing holding it back is the average fried rice and sauces being extra. Service is great and food is very fast !

Yelp
Love coming here to enjoy a delicious and quiet dinner; food quality is always perfection! Service is always great as well. My favorite sushi spot in Lubbock.

Yelp
We eat at Yuyo at least once a month. The food is delicious and the service is very good.

Yelp
Delicious rolls! Drunken monkey roll is my fave.My daughter always gets chicken ramen. The place looks welcoming and quiet even when there's almost a full house. I come here every time I go to Lubbock. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Was such quaint place with attentive service for how busy and low staffed they seemed. I got the Chicken teriyaki Bento box, Mary Jane roll, and Miso soup. Their collection if mixed drinks and clever desserts like Fried Oreos with Green tea ice cream were attempting! Although was stuffed from the healthy serving sizes and abundance provided in my Bento box. I wish I remembered to take a picture of it before scarfing it down. Their location is very misleading and discreetly placed behind the KFC, but they have plenty of parking and a classy ambience inside. Would love to come back with a larger party, will definitely call ahead to make sure they are prepared staffing wise because I know the menus options will be more than enough!

Scott H.

Yelp
I eat at Yuyo's several times a week. Love the food, the service and the atmosphere. I have never had a bad experience at this restaurant. I highly recommend. I love sashimi, and theirs is always fresh. The Drunken Monkey Roll is my sushi roll recommendation. Pricing is excellent when compared to other restaurants offering a similar menu.

Yelp
I usually eat at Japanese restaurants in Austin but Yuyo's here in Luboock is a knock out for great sushi. The parking lot was full of vehicles and I know why now; great food. The service was good but not the best - I've been here several times and since it was busy was probably why he was a little slow. That and he never asked if I wanted another refill or drink - hence the 4 stars. Other than that, great restaurant.

Yelp
Great food, decent prize, friendly staff. The portions were decent. Surprise to find in this part of Texas

Yelp
Unbussed dirty tables everywhere. Basic soups (miso and clear) took 15 minutes to come out. Very BASIC order with 2 rolls and a few pieces of sushi- it's now 45 minutes later and no food. Waitress didn't give us napkins, utensils, or chopsticks- had to ask for all of them 15 mins after we got there. The people sitting next to us had all kinds of problems with wrong food, no food, or very long wait times. It's Saturday night and the place is only half full. This is a very low rent sushi place. In Lubbock, Hayashi and O'Hana are 10 times better. The waitstaff, kitchen, and management here obviously do *not* have their sh*t together! This was our first and last time here. Total waste of time. On a sidenote, Japanese waitress was very nice and polite, although her English wasn't good at all. *EDIT: it's even worse than what I originally stated above. Do not come here. OMFG this whole operation is a disaster.

Yelp
It's always worth the trip. Could never say enough about the quality of food, the great service and the variety of selections. A must visit, when in Lubbock, TX.

Yelp
Came here for dinner the other day, and the ambience was great. We were seated immediately, and got crab and cream cheese wontons with chicken Katsu to start off. I thought both were pretty good and the chili sauce it came with was really good! For our main dish, my friends and I each got specialty rolls. I got the Phoenix roll, and asked for tempura flakes on top. The roll had 8 pieces and was pretty filling since we had appetizers to start. I thought it was really good and think it's one of the better sushi places in Lubbock. Next time, I want to try the bento boxes! Definitely going to be back!

Yelp
My niece took me here for Mother's Day dinner last night. What a pleasant surprise this restaurant was! There is a dining area and a bar with tables in the bar area as well. If was very clean and welcoming. The menu revealed a number of interesting mixed drinks, wine and beer. Next time I'm going to try one of the alcoholic drinks. There is a very nice selection of dishes including sushi, Bento Boxes, chicken, steak and seafood dinners. We had the shrimp and veggie tempura for an appetizer which was excellent! The breading was light and crispy. There is a nice variety of appetizers on the menu. My niece had the sesame chicken and broccoli with fried rice. It has a great flavor and perfectly prepared! I had a Bento Box with teriyaki chicken, California rolls, pot stickers (what I call them they have another name for them) and tempura veggies. Salad and rice came with my meal as well. The salad had a ginger dressing which was excellent. This was a nice variety of foods and perfectly cooked! For dessert we shared some green tea ice cream which was beautifully presented in a martini type glass and topped with whip cream. The ice cream was not strongly tea flavored as I've been accustomed to. But it was green and very good as well. I'm looking forward to returning to try other dinners.

Yelp
My daughter that goes to Tech recommend this place while I was dropping her back off for spring semester. I didn't have high hopes because she likes places like Arby's and Subway. I was absolutely amazed at the food served! It was very hot temperature, perfect amount of spice, and the portions were huge. We had orange chicken, honestly the best I've ever had, and kung pau broccoli beef, that was awesome too. I like mine really hot and could have handled some more heat, but it was outstanding. The server was attentive and polite refilling drinks as needed and asking if we needed anything. The portions were very large for the price paid. I would highly recommended and can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Yelp
Shitty service waited more than a hour for our food to be served. Our waitress would not fill our cups unless we told her to and was in the worst mood.
google avatar

Brenda Ä.

Yelp
Still our most favorite spot in Lubbock. Ordered a California roll, among other things, and asked them to sub soy paper in place of nori. No problem. The Age Tofu was delectable. Practically melts in your mouth while having a slightly crunchy exterior. Everything was as expected. Absolutely the best Japanese/Asian food we've experienced anywhere. Tonight was: Hibachi Steak, Egg Rolls, CA roll w/soy paper, Egg Fried Rice, Chicken Katsu, Age Tofu.

Yelp
I came at 4:30 on a Sunday, after my original plans for the afternoon were foiled. I ordered water, chicken ramen and a Texas tech roll- with cucumber added. The restaurant was playing an interesting choice of music, some songs were Irish sounding, some were new age, just strange and a bit louder than would be considered ambient. Whatever. The Texas Tech roll came out first and I loved it. The spicy tuna was probably the spiciest I've EVER eaten! (And yall- I've eaten lots of sushi all over the country.)Some people stated how there was no flavor to the spicy tuna- well, let me tell you- they must have changed the recipe! My nose is still running and my mouth is still on fire, 2 glasses of water later. Still waiting on the ramen. I don't mind waiting, gives my stomach a chance to settle. The ramen came out and I was instantly disappointed. It was glorified chicken noodle soup. No soft boiled egg, no ginger, no coconut milk, no chili oil. It was what might be called 'American ramen' but not what I was hoping for. I ate some, took the rest home and will have it for lunch tomorrow. It's not bad, it's just not what I was hoping for. Would I come back? Yes, but not order the ramen. Sushi is good, would be Interested in trying the hibachi next time.

Yelp
Still Love this place!!! Got the Volcano Roll this time. It was amazing & the pieces were huge! My daughter and I had a great time laughing at each other.
google avatar

Yelp
Super tasty and love the atmosphere. Staff is always nice. Its also a lot more affordable than most.
google avatar

Thea G.

Yelp
Sashimi are really fresh, especially the sweet shrimp, so creamy. Also the salmon is our favorite today. Forgot to take picture of the tuna tartar, the sauce taste really good with the chips and tuna. Price are worth it.
google avatar

Pedro S. M.

Yelp
This is a restaurant that my friend recommended. We went and found the naruto roll. Cucumber rolled with salmon and tuna sashimi in a roll. Love it. Agedashi tofu abundant and well made delicious. The udon beef soup perfect. The ramen soup was excellent. The sake peach and lychee flavor were excellent. The prices were very reasonable and service perfect. The experience is nice. I sure will go back to eat more of the menu.

Yelp
Amazing place! My favorite sushi place in town :) both rolls were very big and super filling. The Hawaii Roll was fresh and flavorful. The Drunken Monkey was a very delicious tempura Roll. Service is great, they are very prompt and knowledgeable about the menu. Highly recommend!

Rene K.

Yelp
Food was amazing and our server was very attentive! This was our second time coming and she remembered what we ordered the first time! Very good food!
google avatar

Alicia D.

Yelp
I came on two separate occasions and both times were really nice! I came in for their lunch sushi special it came with two rolls and a soup they were both delicious and filling! On my second trip we came in for dinner and I got hibachi chicken, it was phenomenal the price was very reasonable for the quality of the food and they gave me so much I was able to take home leftovers for lunch the next day!
google avatar

Jae C.

Yelp
Blend flavor, over priced, greasy (never had greasy sushi), not my type of food. I enjoy going to Asian food but this was exception. Just so over priced and food was not fresh. I would come here for Chinese food but not Japanese food. Probably won't come back again.
google avatar

Cory W.

Yelp
This is our fourth visit to Yuyo, and the Yaki Soba was amazing. The service is great, and the staff is friendly. Food is prepared fast, and is very high quality. This is our new favorite place, we come here at least once every week.
google avatar

Eric C.

Yelp
This place is just consistently fantastic. Sushi, ramen, hibachi, Tom yum soup all top notch. One of the best kept secrets in town. Service is amazing and you can tell they really care about your experience. Definitely give this place a try!

Kyle L.

Yelp
It is so good to get to eat inside again at Yuyo! Great food. Big servings. Good prices. Great service. I highly recommend it.
google avatar

Dee P.

Yelp
Came with a friend because she wanted me to try and give my opinion during lunch. Typical Texan style posing as "Japanese" It's all mainly Chinese foods (with Chinese staff), just thrown a few rolls here and there and call it "Japanese". Waitress was loud and rude, but what did I expect. Asked questions about the fish quality, she just said "store bought" or "I don't know" of course I can never compare this against japan..well ANY "Japanese" style restaurant in Lubbock. Do yourselves a favor and just skip it. Not good quality fish, some were very luke warm, a bit sour to the taste. Wouldn't recommend it at all.
google avatar

Elle W.

Yelp
I ate here this week and ordered the chicken ramen. As I waited, I was given fried wonton chips and sweet and sour sauce as an appetizer and that was some kind of broke college student snack! I was a bit disappointed that my ramen did not look like traditional Ramen. It had sliced breaded chicken, very sparse of some type of green stuff(bukchoy), I think tofu and barely cooked noodles but no egg. It was pretty flavorless in my opinion and you get quite a bit of food for your buck. The restaurant was bare and the employees were as nice as they could be! I would probably go back to try a sushi roll but not the ramen.
google avatar

Phil G.

Yelp
Japanese & Chinese food at a great price. Service was awesome. The food was hot, fresh, and plentiful. They have Japanese Beer and a pretty good cocktail bar as well. Our table had six adults and four kids. We had a pretty fair sampling of sushi, fried rice, noodles and it was good. The YakiSoba isn't. It is Ramen. The only reason I know better is that I was stationed in Japan and Okinawa several times in the service. But when questioned the waitress was honest about the noodles which saved us all some grief. Ilk go back.
google avatar

Patty S.

Yelp
What a great meal! Can't believe we have wonderful Japanese food in Lubbock, service was just a tad slow, but it was busy and our meal was fabulous. The wait staff was very polite. Restaurant and restroom was clean. It was nice to escape everyday Lubbock for a while. We will be back again.
google avatar

Benjamin C.

Yelp
Surprisingly I always come here for the Chinese food. It is awesome! If yo like spicy food, the Mapo Tofu is a MUST HAVE! The twice cooked pork, water cooked beef and cumin lamb are all wonderful too! Come hungry, try some Chinese food and go home happy!
google avatar

Jaber H.

Yelp
Caveat: They received new management, new waiters/waitresses, and a new chef. This place used to be one of my favorite sushi joints in town, but my visit today was one of the worst restaurant experiences in my life. We had a table of 6 and our waitress was really friendly. Two of us ordered the normal sushi rolls(which usually come in 8 pieces) and when they brought it out, there were only 6! It was still the same price and the waitress tried to tell us that the chef was new so he cut the roll into bigger pieces. This was a lie. They were the exact same size as they were when I last visited but just 6 pieces instead of 8. Two others ordered the bento boxes which we didn't have a problem with. The other two ordered the Phoenix Roll and the Yuyo Roll but they were still waiting for their food to come. 30 mins after I received my food, the waitress came out with a PHILADELPHIA ROLL(which was exactly what I ordered so I don't know why it took them so long to bring out the same thing)instead of a PHOENIX ROLL and tried telling us it was the Phoenix Roll. The waitress went as far as trying to correct us by pointing to the menu and showing us what we ordered. After 20 more mins, the Yuyo Roll and Phoenix Roll finally came out. We all received our food in drastically different times. We paid for sushi that was supposed to be 8 rolls but instead only received 6. The portions were incredibly small. The food was not tasty. The service was mediocre. Needless to say, I will never be back and I highly suggest everyone to eat at a different restaurant because there are a lot of good ones here in town.

Concerned Reviewer M.

Yelp
TERRIBLE. Waited 35 minutes for lunch, with not another person in the restauarnt, for chicken teriyaki Bento box. Miso soup was scalding hot, couldn't eat it? Egg rolls tasted like frozen ones out of the freezer. Teriyaki sauce was terrible, colorless, with a few slices of chicken and a lot of mushrooms. California rolls tasted like they came from the grocery store, and not Chef freshly made? Even the fortune cookie was soggy and unedible. WILL NEVER RETURN.

Momoftwo R.

Yelp
We used to go here and liked it, but they can't seem to get their health scores up to acceptable. I keep checking now that Yelp posts them. I don't go to places that have been cited for cross contamination or evidence of pests. Please get this taken care of so we can return.

Tammy A.

Yelp
Sushi roll was very good but we on entrees food for an hour. Very inexperienced waitress.
google avatar

Summer R.

Yelp
I've read a lot of bad reviews about this place but I've had 3 great experiences! Granted it's always been take out bc of covid, but they are super nice. They do take awhile, but they've been honest about estimated time. Their sushi is fabulous and the udon is really good too. I wasn't the hugest fan of hibachi, but it was fine.

jesse s.

Yelp
Although the food is great the service is absolutely terrible, I've gone when it's jam packed and tonight when it's just another table and me......Dead slow! Food sat there for 15 mins while a waiter (not mine) chatted with the sushi chef. I had to go up there and ask for my food! I tired this place twice, NEVER AGAIN.
google avatar

Sherry G.

Yelp
This is our FAVORITE sushi place in Lubbock. The rolls are always amazing. We typically go as a party of 4 (2 couples) and I'm the only gluten-free one in the group. I eat there knowing that Cici will take care of me. She remembers our orders every time. The last time we were there we asked about Mochi Balls (ice cream) and they didn't carry them. Today we came and at the end of our meal, she surprised us with strawberry & mango Mochi Balls. We love this place.
google avatar

Thomas B.

Yelp
Had a wonderful carry-out experience. Food was left in a bag on table outside when I called to say I had arrived. Totally contactless, with sealed bag. The food was delicious and hot. Their General Tso's chicken is the best I've had anywhere, crispy and spicy with just the right amount of breading. Kung pao beef had other vegetables besides the usual celery, very tasty. I did order both dishes to be very spicy, but they weren't. That is why it's 4 instead of 5 stars. The kim chi appetizer was great and was suitably spicy. Highly recommended.

Nathan V.

Yelp
Awful experience and it was truly horrific and disgusting. The sushi was hot, hibachi was cold I wish the roles were reversed and my hibachi was hot off the hibachi grill and my sushi was cold but oh well I know never to come back
google avatar

Julia H.

Yelp
For Lubbock, this is pretty good sushi. The fish is relatively fresh and their rolls are pretty good. For some reason, I do not like the flavor of their miso soup. They have pretty good Happy Hour specials.

Ben H.

Yelp
I waited over an hour and a half for food. Some of the worst service I've ever had. Avoid at all costs.
google avatar

Kathy B.

Yelp
This is my favorite in town. I always have to get the egg rolls, just love them. So far we have never Ben disappointed here. We always get fantastic service, super nice folks. I am gluten intolerant and they have no problem fixing me things separately to accommodate me.
