At Z Cafe in Oakland, the quality of drinks during happy hour is truly impressive, with a diverse selection that caters to different tastes. Whether you prefer classic cocktails, fine wines, or artisanal beers, there's something delightful to sip on. The lobster ravioli is a standout dish, bursting with rich flavors and perfectly cooked pasta, making each bite a delightful experience. And the kale salad, with its fresh ingredients and zesty dressing, adds a refreshing and healthy touch to the meal. The atmosphere at Z Cafe is relaxed and inviting, making it a great spot for a casual get-together or a quiet evening out. The cozy yet spacious setting allows guests to unwind and enjoy their meal without feeling crowded or rushed. What truly elevates the dining experience is the exceptional service provided by the staff. They are not only friendly and welcoming but also knowledgeable about the menu, offering great recommendations that enhance the overall dining experience. Their attention to detail and genuine hospitality make every visit to Z Cafe a memorable one.

Classy - beautiful bar, restaurant and building - safe - welcoming- outstanding drinks, food and top shelf service. These are some of the best qualities I think of when I think of Z’s or describe the location to others. This is a hometown-classy, relaxed bar that is just beautifully decorated inside, from top to bottom. Elegant and welcoming. The staff is just as welcoming and remember your name and drink! There are plenty of seats throughout the restaurant and even some outside. Any drink you can think of, they will make it and BOOM, it’ll be amazing too! Their bartenders are good mixologists. Refreshing and delicious. Now; their food….ohhhhh weeeee, all of it is delicious! Their wings are always on point and the sliders too! The good thing is on different days, they have different deals so you can try everything on their menu. Their bread and butter is always fresh! Literally. I would see them drop the bread off fresh every morning to the restaurant. They offer their restaurant and services for venues and events and I HIGHLY encourage you to have your future parties held at Z’s. Whether you just want to get away for a drink or two and sit while people watching or involved in a conversation or just relaxing you will want to come hang at Z’s and I promise this will be your new hangout. Easily located on the corner of 28th and Broadway, there is plenty of parking on both 28th and 27th, but just as anywhere in the Bay Area, please be mindful and lock your cars and do not leave valuables in your car. There is ADA seating and restrooms.

Such a friendly (thank you, Tony - you are a superlative server! Helped make the experience comfortable and delightful 🙂) food was yummy, happy hour is fantastic. Salmon was cooked to perfection. Easy to get to, close to theaters.

Went there for Oakland Restaurant Week with 3 others and had a great time. Food was excellent especially the pot roast, apple walnut salad, chicken piccata and bread pudding. Lively atmosphere, extensive cocktail menu and awesome service. We'll definitely be coming back!

I am bursting at the seam to take my partner there for dinner and a movie. Wait! Happy hour. The kitchen is clean, their service is hospitality. There's a difference people and like the Notorious B. I. G said, " if you don't know, now you know....." Neighborhood jewel, I'll see you there.

Yelp
Having recently moved near the lake and wanting new places to eat without always having to make a reservation, this place checked all the boxes. The only negative take away I have is parking but it's not high on the scale because it took us no time to find a spot right near the restaurant doors. Setting the scene, it was early evening on a Saturday, a little bit before 8pm. We found parking right on the side street next to the restaurant front doors. Once inside the establishment we were greeted immediately and I was able to choose where I wanted to sit due to it not being crowded (mind blown on why it wasn't). Minutes after we received our seats/menus, we were brought waters & our drink order was taken. The cocktails were amazing and their happy hour really does make you happy! After giving the menu a nice look, we decided on fries, crab cakes and the lobster ravioli. Realizing that my husband and I would be sharing, our waiter went above and beyond and asked if we wanted the ravioli brought out on two plates (Thank You, so sorry I didn't get his name). The kitchen did a beautiful job in taste and quality while preparing the food! For dessert my husband got the bread pudding which was so good I barely got any so I had to order the flourless chocolate cake. Although I don't shy away from flour, that cake made me reconsider my life choices lol. It definitely was great with the fresh cup of coffee I had to accompany it. With the service, the food and the ambiance we will definitely be regulars at The Z Bar!

Yelp
Stopped by Z Cafe & Bar for dinner with a friend and it was a nice experience. We initially considered the happy hour menu, but it had limited food options. We both ordered the chicken piccata, and it was pretty good and the portion size was great too. Customer service was great, although the restaurant was quite busy. Parking was a bit of a challenge for me, but there is street parking available nearby.

Yelp
So I'm sad to say we have been sleeping in this place over the last 6 years! Had no clue it even really existed although I drove past it plenty of times! I honestly thought it was a new establishment until I found out it's been here for a long time! One of my favorite parts of this place was the interior architecture. You can tell from all the crown molding this building has history and has been around a long time! I love it! To me it has a story and I wish I knew what it was. The food is also delicious. I wish I would have known sooner plus they have a super good happy hour menu! We will be back to try that soon. The service was top notch however, we did come when they had literally just unlocked the doors so it was just the two of us. We will have to go back during busier hours and see if it's still as good. All in all definitely worth a try!

Yelp
Great Salad food, staff is friendly and accommodating. I had the Cesar Salad with grill chicken, I enjoyed the meal.

Yelp
I wanted to get some takeout for lunch, so I ordered ahead via Grubhub for a mushroom risotto and sweet potato fries. While it's named a cafe, it has a pretty large food selection, and is really more of a full service restaurant, not just a place that sells coffee/tea and sandwiches or pastries. My order was ready 15 minutes earlier than my scheduled pick up time according to the text I received. Once I got there, it was a brief wait and then I was smoothly handed over my order, which was packaged in sealed boxes to help prevent food from spilling. The sweet potato fries were pretty good, I just wish they were slightly crispier since the moisture in the box made them get less hard while I was carrying them home. As for the risotto, it was quite yummy, I haven't often seen it and it satisfied my craving for it. It's decently savory but also has a slight sour kick.

Yelp
The staff here are so hands on and personable. I came in for HH, I'll be honest and say I wasn't intrigued by it and just ordered off the regular menu. So went against my HH plan. I ordered a side of rice, with their shrimp and mixed it to create a spicy shrimp scampi styled dish. Drinks were good. Parking is interesting and not the most straightforward. Overall my experience with the staff really made me want to review and give it the stars I did. I will come back to discover more of the menu, bc of them.

Yelp
I've been dining here with my friends for over a year. Their Sushi is prepared much like the way it would be served in a Sushi Bar, they've even got Eel Sauce. After we play Tennis, we dine here for breakfast. On my way up highway 76 I stop in at Happy Hour in the evening by myself or with a friend. 〰〰〰〰[Breakfast|Lunch|Dinner]〰〰〰〰 Service is great * Servers do a good job at being attentive when you need them to add something Artwork on the walls give you plenty to feast your eyes on, an outside patio for sunshine with a breeze. It's my Regular Go-To along Highway 76 in Bonsall.

Yelp
Clean, staff friendly and attentive, food was pretty mediocre honestly. Drinks okay and well priced.

Yelp
Ambience was warm and welcoming. Our server was very attentive and friendly. We were lucky enough that they were serving Jambalaya--an off menu item. It was amazing; the rice was soft and creamy and the dish had lots of sausage, fish and shrimp. My husband and I split the dish and we had leftovers. We also tried the bourbon meatballs--perfect balance of smoke and BBQ sauce. We also tried the bruschetta--bread was amazing! We will be back!

Yelp
Good food, nice selection, great friendly service even though they were quite busy. Nice neighborhood with lots of smiling people walking by. A little noisy but everyone seemed to be enjoying their visit.

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants in Oakland throughout a majority of my life. Can't go wrong with the food and the drinks, and I appreciate the service of the staff.

Yelp
I love this place. I miss working nearby when I could order my lunch from there. My favorite dish is the chicken piccata and, while the mashed potatoes are yummy, I usually substitute them for the veggies. They already have a garlic sauce on them and the piccata sauce adds another level of deliciousness. The ambience is also nice, and service is great!

Yelp
New to the area. Love Z bar and café. They take very good care of the businesses in the area. Salads are fresh and good. Lots of different appetizers to choose from.

Yelp
Came to Oakland to have my vehicle service and while walking looking for a coffee place found this establishment thinking it was just a restaurant. We started with couple black coffee the taste could of have been fresh from earlier but my tastes buds said it tasted burn and that it has been seating for a while there, we order the blackened tilapia $20 the plate served with rice, steam vegetables the couple things that made me think that it was not fresh since the restaurant stated in their menu "Daily Special: fresh ingredients of the day" which it was very interesting that the avocado salsa was not that fresh as it is stated neither the coffee, I believe the avocado salsa was a leftover and mixed with partially a fresh one, I took the plate to the bar where the waitress was chatting with her coworker and I asked her if I the cook can make a fresh avocado salsa since this one is presenting black abraded yellow of the avocado it doesn't look fresh. She rolled her eyes and no a simple apology she took the plate to the cook and from my table I was able to see the kitchen and the cook opening a brand new avocado and make the salsa, waitress brought the plate back to the table with an offended face and again no a simple apology but the avocado looked much much better fresh as it should. Customer service now in days is truly, truly, very poor for an establishment of two decades, facial expression said a lot. Ambiance it's nice very classy music a very decent volume that you can keep a conversation without yelling at each other. After this I don't think we will be back and for sure need to find a place for good fresh and not burned cup of coffee and with a good humble customer service.

Yelp
Great service and good food. Variety of menu options and a full cocktail menu. Hidden location, by all the times I've dined for either lunch or dinner I have never experienced any bad food. The wait staff is always super helpful!

Yelp
Came here per recommendation of a fellow Yelp buddy. They have happy hour from 3-9PM daily. There are so many vodka-based drinks to choose from! My friend comes here for their lobster ravioli, which is comfort food at its finest and their blackened tilapia entree definitely hit the spot. The tiramisu in a cup was the perfect way to end the night. Service was attentive and down-to-earth. Our host, Pia, was so amazing, attentive, and down-to-earth. Very cool place to grab some grub, grab some happy hour drinks, and chill.
google avatar

Yelp
Very cozy local spot with an incredible tasty Caesar Kale Salad topped with tilapia or salmon! I tried the capellini as well and it's quite good. The portion is large so when really hungry and craving intense taste, I would opt for that item. From what I was told, the chef is amazing, and everything on the menu is worth it. I look forward to trying other choices that are most suitable for full dinner with the family, or on a date night! Parking is fairly easy off of broadway, and there are locals usually at the bar that bring a welcoming and friendly ambience. There is indoor and outdoor seating which is nice as we continue to have amazing weather. It goes without saying that the drinks are good as they have a full sized bar. The waitress Pia was so nice and accommodating when I couldn't decide on what to drink and made suggestions. The espresso drink with Irish Baileys was just the evening nightcap needed after the wonderful salad. Will definitely visit again!

Yelp
Wow this place is delicious! My cousin took me here and it's her go-to spot. It was a Saturday night, not busy at all. The light was dim and intimate and I loved the R&B tunes playing. The service was good and the server was very attentive. No complaints there. I ordered the chicken piccata with a side of spinach and it was SO good. I picked at my cousin's lobster ravioli and it, too, was amazing. The portions are generous and I was happy to have a little bit leftover. When I'm back in Oakland, I know where to go!

Yelp
Oh my goodness, that chicken Alfredo is one of the BEST pastas I've ever had in life, Alfredo is my favorite too. This pasta the sauce, sautéed mushrooms, the blackened chicken, not too overpowering just ridiculously delicious!! The owner was so real and nice, please support this business, the chefs can COOK! The waitress was a doll and that bread Semifreddi jeez man, even the butter was all that. You will see me again next week. Oh and the portion you have 2 meals and I eat.

Josh M.

Yelp
I was really excited to try this place out. I had ordered takeout online and received meatloaf instead of pot roast. The food was good but it was incredibly disappointing getting home after making the long drive. Unfortunately not a good first impression for me.

Jules P.

Yelp
Z Cafe catered my son's Bar Mitzvah and did an amazing job. The food was delicious. They set up, provided people to help serve, and cleaned up after the party was over. With a small charge, they provided table clothes and napkins. Mehta, the owner, was highly responsive and lovely to work with. He helped me think through the menu to make sure everyone had food they could eat: vegan tofu stir fry, rice, arroz con pollo, pasta, bruschetta and delicious flourless chocolate cake. Please consider Z Cafe if you need an event catered.

Danyelle A.

Yelp
The service was good. The drinks were fire! The salad and pot roast were great. Very nice experience.

Vivianne D.

Yelp
Z Cafe is one of my favorites in the east Bay Area as it is for a large number of frequent clients. Of course, one of the elements for being so popular is its location. "B Street- Berkeley " is a good place to go on any day for lunch with your friends. The next one is the consistency of its cuisine. You can always count with the crab salad, the Caesar one with its crispy romaine lettuce and balance dressing . The sandwiches come toasted to crisp perfection. May be weakest point is the list of the desserts. The service, when the restaurant is not overly busy, is fast efficient and amicable.

Yelp
food 9/10 happy hour 10/10 vibes 10/10 service 100/10 I stopped by for a nightcap after the WORST date. Leemar & the bartender bae (I didn't catch her name but she worked the night of 12/27) were so attentive & sweet, they literally made me forget about the date from hell. Great local spot if you're looking for good food, great service & an IMPECCABLE playlist.

Yelp
I was happy with the food and the vegetarian options available. I was kind of drawn to the place based on the menu. Service was mediocre, not great (e.g., forgot the fries order and never came back to check and see if everything was ok). Street parking was easy, and the location with large windows was nice (except for the homeless guy peeing outside the window while we ate). I'd definitely come here again, but I wouldn't rave about it or seek it out.

Alicia P.

Yelp
Service amazing! Ambiance great! Food was okay. Fettuccine was very bland. The bread was good though.

Victoria S.

Yelp
Best salmon I have ever tried I love this place I ate it 4 days in a roll and it didn't disappoint me at all .

Yelp
Truly a local's spot! We went here for happy hour yesterday and both grabbed cocktails. My housemate also got the bruschetta. The bruschetta was quite vinegar-y. The cocktails were good (not too sweet). The service was quick, the bartender was nice, and the building is beautiful. The crowd is definitely more local and attracts regulars, which is not always the case in Oakland. Worth checking out for drinks!

Ellen ..

Yelp
Service is always awesome! Mehdi is always smiling! Food is super yummy! Chicken Piccata and meatloaf are my favorites!
google avatar

Yelp
Great food and service! Everyone super nice. Mississippi pot roast was amazing. I just want to curl up in a blankie and take a nap now. Good strong drinks. Hubs had the pepper tofu - great flavor. Leemar took great care of us! We'll be back to try more of the menu. March update: just had the pot roast and Alfredo via DoorDash. Still 5 stars! Only negative....you don't get Leemar via DoorDash.

Yelp
I enjoyed all of my food and will be coming back. We had a big party and the hostess took good care of all of us. Thank you.

Yelp
The place, the food, the drinks, the customer service: 10/10 recommend. Definitely my fav spot to work at.

Yelp
This place is solid. Good drinks, nice location, though if you take the wrong turn, you may end up down an alleyway with lots of tents and homeless folks. Food is good, employees are nice and attentive. I ordered the kale salad with avocado and it was fresh and tasty. Also got the blackened tilapia (pictured) and it was not only fresh and cooked well but the veggies were delightful! Highly recommend.

Yelp
First time dining at Z Cafe & Bar and saw the mixed reviews. Decided to give it a try with 3 friends and wasn't disappointed. Menu offers a variety of items from pasta, meatloaf, pork chops, burgers...almost comfort food with a great happy hour...quite an extensive bar! We were here for Oakland Restaurant Week to try the dinner menu that included: A P P E T I Z E R S * Tomato bruschetta with balsamic and mozzarella - good but a little overdressed with balsamic - 3.5 stars * Mini Crab Cakes - i liked it was more crab than filler but was 'ok' as breading was a little soggy and missing something - 3 stars S A LA D Choice of Cesar, Z House salad , or Fuji apple, Blue Cheese and Glazed Walnuts - all delicious and lightly dressed M A I N * 3 - Mississippi Pot Roast with Mashed Potatoes (wasn't picture worthy) - tender, flavorful, delicious! All agreed it was a generous portion and would get again - 4 stars * Grilled Honey Dijon Glazed Salmon - friend said it was perfectly cooked and nicely seasoned - 4 stars with rice and steam vegetables D E S S E R T * Lemon bread pudding - I thought it was more "bready" than custardy but did have a wonderful flavor...was a little dry for me: 3 stars friends liked as is: 4 stars Above items $40/person E X T R A S * Mac and Cheese - different - penne pasta with creamy white cheddar, Parmesan cheese...tasted like it had a hint of nutmeg - 4 stars * Bourbon Meatballs - all agreed overly sweet sauce - 3 stars HH D R I N K S - blueberry lemon drop (Yummy) and Old Fashioned Service was good and our server: "Boss Lady" (name on the receipt) definitely working that whole front room and hustling! There was a minor issue and was comped on the extras which was super appreciated but not necessary! We'll take it! Overall, *** 3.5 - 4 stars *** we all enjoyed the meal especially, that pot roast! Would return for HH, that pot roast or get some lobster ravioli (per Shayla B's 5 star review!) Plenty of street parking and would park on Broadway where there's more traffic as some areas seem dark with plenty of broken car glass. :(

Yelp
We've been coming here for the past 3+ years and have given it 4 stars, but since the last 3x we've dined here (twice for lunch) and ended up coming back for happy hour the same day because the service, food and the overall environment is just hands down awesome. From the kitchen staff, servers, bartender and the owner - all of them are truly kind, friendly humans. Think of this place as your local go-to diner that you've been going to for years then take up a notch 7+ times. We will definitely be back more often now, keep it up Z-Café, super grateful for your delicious food and awesome service.
google avatar

Yelp
The food is good. Better than regular bar food. Portions are not very generous. You may want to order a salad or appetizer. Service is good. The ambiance is a bit loud. A lot depends on what time you go. Those who love a full bar would enjoy this place.

Yelp
Came here for a team outing and the food was delicious! I recommend getting the bruschetta and the pork chop here! You get about 5-6 pieces

Yelp
OMG, I just ordered the blackened chicken alfredo.... that shit was super smackin!!! the chicken was just what it was supposed to be... blackened and super tasty. The alfredo sauce was creamy, buttery and went perfectly w/ the noodles, mushrooms and red bell peppers. I will say it was a bit pricy and not something you can order everyday, but when you're ready to love on yourself and treat your tastebuds to something nice and heavy... yea, that's it! I'm sprung and got the itis... not sure how I'm going to last another 3 hours working. :}

Yelp
**Updating due to going again during shelter in place** This is now my third time having gotten food from Z Cafe, and the first time doing takeout. They still have yet to let me down with the quality and taste of the food. I've attached photos this time as well. Shelter in place: You can order and pay on the phone or in person (on the phone is recommended). Upon arrival, you enter the restaurant and let them know the name on the order. It took about 15-20 minutes for our order to be completed, which is really good timing. Food: If you find yourself debating between the chicken Alfredo and the lobster ravioli, the sauce is the same, so you can't go wrong with either :). The chicken that came with the chicken Alfredo was amazing. I couldn't put my finger on what spices were used, but I quickly stopped wondering and just kept eating. Service: Once again, the service was great. The person who took our order and greeted us upon arrival was very kind and friendly. ------------- Highly recommend this hidden gem in Oakland. Food: the first time I came here, I got the lobster raviolis and a cider. The raviolis were very filling and had a nice cream sauce with diced red bell peppers. The second time I came here, I got the Z Burger with a side of sweet potato fries, and a Yummy Rummy. The Yummy Rummy was so good that I got a second. There is apparently a drink called the Pornstar that my friend has gotten multiple times that he recommends. Ambiance: from the outside, you wouldn't expect the restaurant to be as nice as it is. It's beautiful inside and quite elegant looking. Service: we actually had the same waiter both times and he's such a delight. Great with recommendations, very kind, an overall such a great waiter.

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday night with some girlfriends. They have indoor seating, but space out the tables very far for COVID restrictions. The service was great! We got water and bread as soon as we sat. Once my whole party arrived, they took our drink and appetizer order. We got the Garlic Prawns (spicy) and the crab cakes. We all ordered drinks off their happy hour menu (mango martini, raspberry bubble, peach martini, and the ruby red cosmo). Everything was soooo good. The drinks tasted good and were strong. The food was delicious! We stayed until they closed at 9. Overall, it was a great experience with yummy food. I definitely recommend coming here for some drinks and food!

Yelp
I just had lunch here with a friend. The menu is a little limited. But they make up for it with great execution and 5 star service. They brought bread and butter which is a nice touch. I had the cattle burger (cheese and barbecue sauce. I opted for the salad rather than the fries. OMG the salad was a killer. Next time I may just have it for my main. The burger is a half pound cooked to my medium request. Comes with tomato slices lettuce and re onions. I ate half and brought the rest home. We sat there for 2 hours. I am sure as they return to normal crowds that won't happen again. My guest had the salmon salad. The salmon looked great he finished it and the salad.
google avatar

Annette T.

Yelp
This place deserves more love in this neighborhood. It's a nice but not pretentious environment with good food (American, burgers, martinis) and chill staff. It usually looks closed - which is probably why it took us so long to try the first time. I blame that on the area, they are done a disservice by the nearby places not being taken care of. But don't let that stop you! We've been a few times and the food is always solid and the gigantic drink menu full of eclectic martinis is always delightful. I've tried a few drinks at this point that always sound a bit nuts and they're perfectly mixed and balanced nicely.

Yelp
I was in the mood for salad and quickly pulled up Yelp. I came across Z Cafe & Bar... and took a chance. The place has great street parking, indoor/outdoor seating, clean bathrooms! I ordered the apple and walnut salad with chicken and it was extremely fresh and tasty!!! The staff is pleasant and professional. I wasn't in the mood for alcohol BUT there is plenty of awesome mixed drinks to choose from. This will be one of my spots when I am in the area for sure.

Yelp
Z café, you just continue to impress me! I've been frequenting this spot for over 2 years now, and they never seem to fail me. They remain consistent on all levels! An amazing atmosphere, standup customer service, and delicious food! So, what more can be said that I haven't already previously mentioned? I'm still dangerously hooked on their lobster ravioli. It's some of the best that I've ever had and it tastes amazing every single time that I order it. Not only is their lobster ravioli good, but practically everything that I've had here has been scrumptious! Their crab cakes, burgers, meatballs, Mac and cheese, fish... everything tastes frickin' amazing! The chefs really know how to throw down, and I look forward to dining here every single time. The drinks are something like a dream. The Martinis are the best that I've ever had! To be honest, this place made me fall in love with Martinis. Was never really a big fan of them until I started getting them here. They have some of the most interesting Martini flavors. Espresso, chocolate, ginger... you name it and they probably have it! I absolutely LOVE their custom made Martinis! Many of them are named after the wonderful staff. Besides their Martinis, my favorite cocktail here is their Raspberry Diva. It was the only cocktail that I drank here for almost a year until I finally started to venture out into Martini land. They have the best happy hour in the area! Happy hour is from 4p-10pm Tuesday through Saturday! They have some awesome happy hour deals on their menu. Aside from their wonderful food and drinks, one of the biggest reasons that I keep coming back here is because of the staff. No matter how long it's been since I've stopped in, they ALWAYS remember me. They know what I like to drink. They know what I like to eat. They know me by name. They treat me like family. And, I love that. Mehdi, the owner, is a gem. He's professional but super social and fun! He always takes the time to stop by and say hello. He's also a great bartender too! He made a wonderful cocktail for me that I'll never forget.. well mainly because it was named after him, but it tropically delicious. And OMG.... ZIA!!! One of the best bartenders around! This girl is a beast in the bar! She is seriously talented and of course, extremely beautiful! She has a huge following and it makes total sense. Random fact: she's the only person that I've met that actually remembers the game "Zoombini's". I know you don't care about this, but it added so many cool points to the already cool person that she is. But anyways... I could probably go on and on for hours about how amazing this place is. At this point, you'll just have to experience it for yourself.

Yelp
Tired here first time with a large group of friends for a girls night out. Had the famous crab cakes with a side of veggies. Perfect amount of food and very good. The service was excellent. I almost switched my plan to order these things when we saw the daily special menu and like 4 ppl out of 10 at one of our tables order the Smothered Chicken. The crab cakes were so good and hot fresh right out of the fryer.
