Everything about this place just clicks and works perfectly. The music, the children’s art on the wall, the overall vibe is a true California pizza shop vibe. They got a number of slice options, the Monday meat is very good. The sausage and the garlic go well together. The thing that really makes this spot is the dough. It’s super light and crispy, not bready at all but it holds its texture perfectly. Also the pizza isn’t super salty or overwhelming. It’s literally all you could want in a perfect slice. Also gotta point out that this place does what Tony’s fails to do and actually serves the slice HOT out of the oven. Really can’t say enough good things, huge hot slice of pizza, fair price, fun staff, in a chill unique environment. Definitely worth a stop if in the neighborhood. They sell whole pies too that get made to order. Will be back.

Glad I was able to find this little hole in the wall pizza place. Me and my fiancé walked into this place New Year’s Day and the owner instantly made us feel like he’s known us for years! Not only was the pizza amazing but the atmosphere was just as good! The pizza was thinned crust, loaded with toppings and was a very generous slice and not over priced! Easily rate this place a 10/10 and we will for sure be stopping by every time we’re in the city!

We randomly walked into this restaurant, and it turned out to be the place where we had the best time in San Francisco. The walls were filled with children's drawings, creating a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. All the staff were friendly, and we had an especially delightful conversation with the server. The slice was huge, and every dish we tried was delicious. Especially, the rich flavor of crust was nice. The IPA beer was top-notch too. The salad was split according to the number of people and served on separate plates, and the portions were so generous. It was such a great meal for a reasonable price. If you're looking to have fond memories, I highly recommend this place. I was really hoping to visit again since the server mentioned he works on Sunday, but our travel plan got changed, so we couldn’t make it. I’m looking forward to visiting again someday on my next trip and having another enjoyable chat with him! 👏

Exceptional thin-crust NY-style pizza, quality ingredients and great atmosphere, Hyde street vibe and friendly service. We wandered in unexpectedly and loved it, then up the block to Swenson’s for ice cream on a Saturday night. Most of our group grew up in NY, and were suitably impressed across the board

This pizza place sells mostly slices of pizza, but there is also the option to get a full medium or large one. Pizza dough is made with semolina flour, the taste is good but at the bottom of the pizza there were lots of semolina’s grains which became hard after baking. We enjoyed our pizza 🍕

Best pizza in San Fran. Hands down! Such a delight, it was perfectly executed, the flavors were on point, the service was fantastic! Good vibes all around, the people seemed happy to be there which matters! They were very accommodating our kids happily, noticing we were going to sit outside and brought chairs without us even asking. Very cool. We will be back as often as we can.

Za Pizza is a must! Not only is the pizza unique and flavorful, but the atmosphere is so fun and laid-back. The service will make you feel like a regular in your first minute of sitting down. Shoutout to Matt for the amazing time for me and my daughter!

I liked Za a lot - they have a new york style pie (so, thin) and a cornmeal crust. You have to like that sort of thing, and know how to eat it - newbs let it cut their mouth and cry about it. Don't do that, don't be a newb. The owner was named Buzz, I went their for a lunch slice. Very friendly and toppings came through / weren't overwhelmed by the sauce. Nice neighborhood spot.

Great vibe and fun owner! Pizza, so good! That sums it up really. The owner was super nice, chatty in a good way, super community oriented, and very friendly. I'd be him if I owned a joint like that myself! Super passionate and happy doing what he does and running a pizza shop. The pizza was truly flavorful. They used corn meal! You don't see that much anymore. I'm def returning.

i went on a pizza crawl with my friend and this ended up being our last stop (spoiler alert: and my favorite!) the store is no frills, but the walls are covered in drawings by kids. there's seating indoors and two tables outside. note: outside tables don't have any cheese/red pepper. the slices of the day are written on a chalkboard by the cashier, and the two men working were super friendly, similar to what a lot of other reviews have said! order at the counter and sit wherever you want. - cheese slice (4/5): an insanely thin, but large slice of pizza. the cheese to sauce to dough ratio was perfect for me, but my friend would've liked it to be a bit thicker. lotta grease on top though, so we dabbed that off with a tissue. crust was pretty thin, but not dry, and i liked the semolina they used - forgot the name of this slice (3.5/5): a very generous topping of spinach, feta, and sausage, but kind of annoying to eat since the slice was so large the toppings would fall off when we were biting into it. i'm also not a huge sausage girl, so i feel like my rating is very biased, but my friend liked it more than the cheese! if you're looking for one of the thinnest, largest slices of pizza you can find in SF, you have to check this place out! I feel like you definitely get your bang for your buck, and I can attest that their pizza reheats well :)

This neighborhood pizza joint has good pizza - nothing special or fancy but just good, standard pizza. It is a more rustic interior with not too special decor, but a more casual family vibe. There are a lot of families with young children that come by. They do take out and delivery in the area. And their service is fairly quick if you want to order a pizza to go while you wait (about 15 mins).

We stopped by for a late night slice, and I really wasn't expecting the store to be cool as it was! A super local spot, with tons of children doodles all over the walls. We got a sausage scallion slice, and overall it was good. Super crispy, almost cracker style crust, so basically no chew whatsoever. The crust basically serves as a way to deliver the cheese, sauce, and toppings to your mouth. Not quite my style; I prefer the dough to have a bit more chew and flavor to it. Everything was pretty good; the sausage had a bit of a gamey taste which threw me off a bit. If you're into the super crispy, paper thin crust, definitely give this place a try; you'll definitely love it.

I was in town for the weekend and decided I wanted pizza for lunch so I spent about 90 minutes looking online for the "best slice" in SF. I narrowed it down from 10 to 5 to 3 and ended up at Za. And, I'm pretty impressed with myself, because it proved to be an excellent decision. First, the owner has a big personality, and greets everyone and makes them feel welcomed. I had a Caesar salad, which was very large and incredibly fresh. Then I had my usual... A slice of plain cheese pizza. I am originally from the East Coast and I just like it plain no toppings. Nothing fancy just the way it supposed to be , and, it was excellent. Nice and hot and had the right combination of cheese and sauce, and the crust was soft enough to be able to eat yet from enough for just a hint of crunch. It's a small place, but they have tables and a bar and that was nice. I would absolutely go back next time I'm in town.

The crust of this pizza... Super crispy, thin and well-cooked dough with fresh basil, moderately hot peppers and mushroom flavor - the perfect combination for a perfect slice of pizza. The only thing is, I would have liked to see more ingredients, although they have wisely chosen the proportions for their dough. Ok, not the last thing, because I noticed a lot of gnats inside, it creates some disgust to stay there, even though they have a TV, wine and beer, which is perfect for watching a sports game!

Very welcoming and friendly staff! Pizza offered by the slice, but you can also ask them to double cut. There is a nice community vibe here, as the owner welcomes every patron who enters and delivers displays children art on the wall. It's fun to sit here and watch the cable cars go back and forth. Self serve water, which is greatly appreciated! Overall a very nice experience! Yum!

Why is it that the simple things in life can be some of the best things in life? Frills and hype don't necessarily equal greatness. We sure found that to be the case at "Za Pizza." Either their pizza/people combo beckons you here or you simply pass right on by their humble establishment. I counted three tables and three barstools inside, two tables outside, and exactly one television. Yeah, if you're here, you're here strictly for the pizza and the people. Not a bad combo though, right? This place just overflows with genuine local vibe, so no posers, please. Be real or be gone (my words, not theirs). Our server was super friendly and provided great advice about an adventure we are planning for later on this trip (stay tuned!). While I was attempting to secure one of the aforementioned tables outside, he was apparently chatting it up with my wife inside. When he met me outside he said he didn't realize the weather was so nice today and that I must have brought the nice weather with me from San Diego. When I asked how he knew where I am from he said, "Your daughter told me when I met her inside." Yeah, I will literally NEVER live this down. ‍ As much as we enjoyed his company, we planned our visit mostly 'cuz of the (piz)"Za." That thin crust was just so light and seemed to nearly yield a "crunch" with each bite. We don't often include pics of pizza crust, but felt compelled to do so this time. Although we customized our "Za", they also offer a set menu of pizza by the slice options if you're in a hurry (or traveling solo). Come for the crust, stay for the people (or vice versa). Super thin and crispy slices, glad I found this neighborhood gem. Perfect amount of sauce. They rotate 2-3 flavors by the slice.

Pretty good pizza. Got the non-red pizzas and their crust was killer. The thickness is on the thinner side but not quite St. Louis style thin crust. Cheese could've been a bit more crisped/cooked a bit more and it was a little less flavorful than expected given how much oil/grease was on top of the pizza. The interior vibe is that of a neighborhood spot and many people rave about this place who grew up in the area. Prices are a little higher than I'd expect for a neighborhood place doing relatively simple pizzas that are good but not amazing, but that happens in the city.

Discovered this spot by accident, and it was just the side of SF we wanted to experience. Tiny neighborhood pizzeria with great food and beer. The staff treated us as if we too were regulars. Gonna really miss this place; went twice and loved it both times.

This is one of the best pizza places in the city for a casual beer & pizza night with the family. The guys that work here are all super friendly, accommodating and great with kids -- always quick with the markers and paper! The pizzas are all delicious -- always a great time.

We've been visiting Za Pizza since almost 15 years. Pizzas are great, one of the best. Very friendly place. Reasonable prices. We strongly recommend this place.

Came here around 7pm on a Thursday and this place was popping! Super long line full of locals so that was a good sign. As I was ooching closer to the front of the line they announced that the only single slices they had left were the potesto, and when I got to the front they told me they ran out of single slices all together. Ultimately I ended up ordering a medium pizza 1/2 pepperoni, 1/2 potesto. Took about 20 minutes to make. The pepperoni was salty and satisfying. The potesto was the star of the show - creamy pesto, cheesy goodness, and soft thinly sliced potatoes. I love the thin crust of these pizzas and would definitely cow again!

Za is a fun spot on Hyde! We did slices and they were large and super affordable ($6-7 each). The guys that run it are awesome and super friendly! Some seating (including a few chairs outside) that made it easy to snag a spot. I really liked the sausage one! They have rotating flavors so excited to go back and try a new one.

We've walked by a few times and were curious about the pizza. We saw someone enjoying a slice and decided to give it a try. We sat outside and watched the cute dogs in the window (a doggy daycare/groomer) next door. Our friendly server came out and told us about the pizza specials along with the beers on tap. He was very engaging and made our dining experience fun! We ordered a large and a medium and both were fantastic. They put on just the right amount of garlic and the crust was flavorful and thin. The sauce was also delicious. The large was huge - YAY!! - and our delightful server brought us out a tray holder so we still had plenty of room to enjoy our feast.

Come here for great American style pizza..., and stay longer than expected for the tasty beer! Pesto lovers must order the pesto-based pizza here. We like ours sprinkled with Italian sausage. They crumple it up really well so you get plenty of sausage in every bite. The Kolsch beer they serve tastes better than any other Kolsch beer I've had in the U.S. Unfortunately, I think they order different large kegs of beer at a time, so they might not always have this particular type. Everyone who works here has always been friendly and helpful. This looks like a great place to work as well as to hang out!

One of the best pizzas in the city, and arguably the best crust hands down. This is a local's spot, a great place to grab a slice. Super kid-friendly, very clean restrooms, and people are very friendly. A neighborhood gem that my kids love. Also, they have great cider!

Today was a warm day and so we decided to head to Swensen's then walk down Lombard. On our way back, we noticed this great pizza shop. Since we have a 3-year old and 6-year old pizza is our go-to. What a gem of a place. Can't praise the staff and owner enough on being super-super kid friendly, dog-friendly and yes, to top it off, they have great pizza and beer.

One of the best east coast style slice in SF! Reminds me of home. I always get the MoMa and sometimes when splitting with my fiancé we'll split 1/2 MoMa 1/2 DaVinci medium pizza. Always great!

The pizza is decent here, a strong C, which is not bad for SF's notoriously bad pizza. But they take the tip shaming to a whole new level here. Super annoying.

Found a nice hole-in-the-wall pizza in the city and it was very good! Za pizza is located in the upper neighborhood of Russian Hill and I honestly wouldn't have been able to spot it if I didn't look it up on Yelp. When you head inside, the employees there are very kind. I was new coming in and they kindly guided me throughout the ordering process. The have your classic pepperoni, cheese pizzas for around $5.50 a slice. I know, it sounds a little outrageous, but believe me, their slices are huge! Literally one of the biggest slices of pizza you can find in this area and I couldn't really complain! They even rotate specialty pizzas throughout the day which was exactly what I did with my photos shown. If you order a large whole pizza, it comes out to be $35, but the slices are really big so I think it's pretty worth it. I loved how generous they were with their toppings and I felt like I got a good bite each time. I wish I knew about this place sooner! And I'm glad they're close to my home too so I can stop by in the future. I'm a fan and I'll definitely come back again!

Because of my proximity to Za, I was able to order delivery (not from a delivery app). The driver was super friendly and appreciative. My pizza was nice and hot and yummy! The crust was not like any crust I've had in SF- nice crunch! While I would've liked a tad more sauce, the amount of toppings were generous but not overwhelming. The salad was my favorite. I ordered the Caesar and it was also a generous portion for the small salad. The dressing was herbaceous and oil based, not creamy which was really refreshing. I'd highly recommend and next time I'd like to dine in to check it out.

We ordered pizza by the slice here for fleet week and enjoyed it! The slices are huge and the crust is fairly thin. I had the pepperoni but I hear the meat special on Saturday's is where it's at. It's nice that it's affordable and by the slice - especially for pizza in SF. In the pizza by the slice category it excels, but in the general pizza category it's mid.

Wow. There are many things to love about the sf foodie scene, but little compares to finding a local - excellent- pizza place that prides itself on not just fresh flavors and amazing textured dough- but fun and passionate staff. This will likely be THE GOTO PIZZA PLACE in Russian hill. A large for 35$ - great for two people. My husband and I (athletes who eat a lot) had three big slices left over. The crust was still great next morning. I'll admit- I am a crust girl- and always eat it first. Hence- innately I judge my pizza by its crust. 10/10 guys on this element. Do you use corn meal? It's so flavorful: tangy, soft, but not too soft and just worth eating. It's not a crust you leave behind. The toppings -- equally inspirational to a moment of silence! My husband and I stumbled upon Za Pizza by accident, after a long, steep walk from Union Square to Russian Hill. We were greeted by the owner, who when he found out we were from Dallas, proceeded to give us crap about every Dallas sports team. (good naturally of course!) We then had THE BEST Pizza! Delicious! We have eaten in a lot of fabulous restaurants in San Francisco, but find ourselves always reminiscing about the slices at Za Pizza.

I got a slice here and it was good. One of the best slices you can get in the city but it was $5.50 for a cheese slice. I would come back for a whole pie. The place has a neighborhood feel.

Couldn't help not stopping by for a slice. The smells just were amazing. They have cheese, pepperoni, special slices ranging $5-6 bucks. The slice didn't take too long and was piping hot. The crust was thin but crisp and lots of toppings. Def will be back to try whole pie.

We were craving pizza on a Friday night and wanted to order from someplace close by. We landed on Za as they delivered to us and we saw the great reviews. It took a few tries to get through on the phone (so don't give up), but the ordering process was fast and easy (they accept cards over the phone or cash to the driver). The pizza was still very hot when it arrived and the delivery guy was really nice. We ordered a large cheese and it was a decent pizza. It was a thin crust, NY-style with a good amount of cheese. The large could feed 4 with a salad or two/three without (depends how hungry you are). The price was similar to other places in the city but I wouldn't say it was the best pizza we've had. I would be willing to try them again and maybe grab a slice or something for lunch.

Alright... Pizza Review Time!! We are here in San Francisco off Hyde Street at Za Pizza. One bite everyone knows the rules... Really decent undercarriage with a minimal flop. It's has some crunch to it and is super light and thin exactly what you want in a NY Slice. Really cheesy!! Have to say the workers there were awesome made everyone feel at home.

I had no idea this place was here! A buddy of mine were in the city and we were looking around for pizza but at that point in time (May 2021) not a lot of things were opened later like at 8, so we had to rush there. Luckily we got there 5 minutes before close time and they said they closed everything up but they were cool and made one more pizza for us! The pizza itself wasn't bad, I expected it to be a bit doughy because the crew there was probably trying to go home, but the under carriage was crunchy and the toppings were plentiful and tasty. Although I wish I got less crust since I like NY style pizza. Thanks guys!

This is one of the finest slice spots in the city. Their crust is super crispy and lined with cornmeal. Every day they have only two special slices, plus the standards of cheese, and pepperoni. So if you're looking for a slice your options will be limited, yet there will never be anything bad. A good rule of thumb is that whenever they are offering a slice with sausage, get it; it is always epic. This is a big, New York style slice, one is more than enough to fill me up. They've got a couple of outdoor seats; as of this writing their indoor seating is not open and hasn't been for a couple of years, but there is also a little park a half a block south on Hyde street which is a great place to have a slice of pizza. So if all the seats are taken, just bust out your Google Maps and look for that little park, it's handy.

Favorite pizza place in the city! Will definitely make the drive just to come here. Amazing staff and superb pizza. there's only 2 small tables outside and it can be a bit chilly, but definitely worth it. Something about the sauce here is so special. Love this place and will always come back :)

My husband and a friend and I went to Za's after having had their pizza at our Brownie Mary Democratic Club meeting. We continue to be impressed with the quality of their pizza. The ambience of the place is friendly and has a fun neighborhood feel. Great toppings and delicious crust.

LOVE the pizza here. Somehow they manage to make their pizza with a burst of flavors but not overly greasy or rich. There is a lightness to their pizza, and the crispy crust was delightful. Da Vinci and Dali pizzas are our go-to's, and love the fact that you can choose half and half so that you can get both flavors. Wish this place actually picks up their phones when they get busy so that we don't always have to order in person for a pickup. Management, if you are reading this review - please join a third party platform like DoorDash, it will only help your business! I would personally order more often if ordering pickup isn't such a process.

Very disappointing. We tried to order a pizza here on a Friday evening in August 2022. After spending a good 10 minutes deciding on our order, we called .... 5 times... 415 771 3100 ...no answer. Sorry, we will take our business elsewhere from now on.
