Yelp
The lobby area had only one party ahead of us , but we waited quite a while to be acknowledged and quite a while longer to be seated. One of our party members had a nostalgic yearning to visit and show us all , her old "favorite restaurant", so we waited. (And waited ) as we were hopeful it would be worth the wait ?
Once we were finally seated , no exaggeration, an hour and 1/2 after ordering , our food was finally , served . During our tedious campaign, we observed another party at a table nearby ,tried to walk out after waiting far too long , and they were coaxed back in & then served
Before us despite ordering well after us ?
Our own waitress had time & opportunity (as she did her best to placate us with many refills of chips ,salsa and water) ... to repeatedly apologize& acknowledge that things were indeed taking far too long . She tried to be "nice " by offering " free"drinks and a fresh made guacamole, "on the house" .... Which did successfully persuade us from leaving to eat elsewhere. I had plenty of bored time to study the menu and reflect, that the basic offerings were all priced on the expensive side, $9 for a bean & cheese burrito no sides ? $16 for a "chili colorado bowl" comprised of about 2 measured cups of meat chunks and 3 tortillas =that's all ? For standard homestyle Cal Mex , in a low budget venue(nothing fancy including no liquor license) ,that's not "standard" pricing . We all ordered simple things like quesadillas and burritos . After our order already was placed &
after we were "invested " with our already long wait , the waitress Then came to our table to "warn" us ...,that our food might take a half hour ? Admittedly we were a party of 6 . I still feel it was Really a mystery , as to why it was all taking so long ? And it CLEARLY , took FAR longer than that "half hour " we were warned about ? . The whole ordeal took well over 3hours ? We were visiting friends in Riverside, and had planned to see a museum after lunch . "Lunch " at Zacatecas took the whole afternoon and was eaten so late , the timing for our party's dinner reservations was thrown off entirely . I am amazed this place has been open for so many years. Maybe it isn't always such a depressing marathon to have a meal here , but wine based margaritas should be a clue . This place is nothing spectacular or memorable & despite its long history, I can't think of any reason to recommend it except One extra star for decent tasting chili colorado ,&1 extra star for all the sincere apologies from the waitress. To be accurate , it was more of a one star lunch experience. Such a huge disappointment, especially for the nostalgic family member who was rather embarrassed to have recommended Zacatecas for Lunch ,
