Zamas, Tulum, Yucatan, Mexico - Explore & Book

"Zamas – meaning 'new beginnings' – is the creation of two escapees from San Francisco, Daniel and Susan, and the product of years of beach-time dreaming. Like hundreds of other people who visit Mexico on holiday every year and fall in love with it, they discovered Tulum on their honeymoon and decided to make it their paradise home. In the years since, Tulum's Beach Hotel Zone has grown, with flashy boutiques and trendy eateries becoming the norm, but thankfully Zamas occupies the furthest end, where the vibe is still reassuringly down to earth. The retreat's rustic cabanas are nestled in a cove on the Maya Riviera where sardines are pursued by pelicans. Some have immediate access to the idyllic white-sand beach and the peaceful bathtub-warm water that make Tulum so enchanting; others are set back from the shore, surrounded by tropical gardens. There's also an airy self-catering house with enclosed gardens, six bedrooms and a private pool, sweeping sea views and full access to the hotel facilities. Although busier by the year, there are still pockets of Tulum that retain the old bohemian charm – and it still arguably has the best beach on the Yucatán Peninsula. Highs The friendly atmosphere makes you feel at home The beautiful beachside location means it's a footfall from the Caribbean Sea, yet well placed for exploring Tulum's ruins by foot or bicycle The cabanas have a Caribbean feel, there's a cooling pool and you can fall asleep to the sound of the waves crashing on the beach The villas are great value – particularly if there are 6-12 of you Excellent cocktails at the beachfront restaurant, with live music in the peak season and chilled-out DJ sets every Sunday Lows A noisy road runs next to the property and some accommodation is set on the far side side of this, away from the beach (Casa Vallejo, some Garden rooms and all Jungle rooms) The beach is small and the shoreline is rocky, so it's not great for swimming, but there is a communal swimming pool Seaweed build-up along this bit of coast can be an issue - it comes and goes but can make the water appear murky (and can also smell a bit when it collects on the shore!)" - Lucia Appleby

Absolutely loved our stay at Zamas Hotel! We spent three nights in a beach bungalow with our family of six, and it was perfect—clean, comfortable, and right by the water. Fernando and the staff were amazing with our kids, even getting them sand toys and helping us with everything we needed. The parking attendant always stopped traffic so we could cross safely, and everyone was super helpful with luggage. Delicious food at the restaurant, a refreshing pool, and great hospitality all around. A little seasonal seaweed on the beach, but nothing that took away from an incredible stay. Highly recommend!

The front desk staff, Fernando and Daniel were amazing! Even before I arrived, they helped me with transportation reservations and recommendations for local tours. During my stay, they kindly called taxis for me and pre-negotiated favorable rates. ||I stayed in a Jungle Ocean View room which was spacious and had a large wrap-around porch with hammocks and chairs. The room was clean, bed was comfortable, hot water was hot. Pool was a nice and quiet place to relax. ||Despite it being low season when the seaweed takes over the beach making it unusable for swimming, there was still plenty to do and explore.

Zamas Hotel Tulum is a friendly, relaxing, low key place to stay when visiting Tulum. ||We stayed in a cottage on the beach in a Beachfront Chica which we loved, although it is small (partly because the bed is so enormous!) ||The beds are incredibly comfortable with good quality sheets, cleaned every day and we found fresh towels were given daily too - partly as there’s nowhere for them to dry. I think the other beachfront accommodation is much roomier. ||The bathroom is pretty spacious and they have the most incredible honey shower gel, and shampoo etc. Gorgeous! You have the gentle sound of the waves at night, and pass the day, watching the Pelicans diving for fish in the bay, plus if you are up at 7am you get to see the sunrise. ||The staff made it memorable, particularly Fernando on reception, who was extremely kind to us. Valentino, Louis, and Louis-Armando in the restaurant were friendly, smiling and efficient. Food was good too and they have Happy Hour (3-6pm) deals on Margaritas and Tacos. It’s quiet, until around 5pm when people (including locals which was nice to see) come to hang out on the rocks or to watch the sunset.||Location is good (although it’s not a great beach for swimming), in that you can walk (to the right if facing the sea) to a fantastic beach which goes on and on for kilometres, to swim or sunbathe or eat - try Le Zebra. Only issue is getting onto it as most hotels try to block access. We were directed by Daniel to go in through La Eufemia, as they allow anyone to come onto the beach and drinks are pretty cheap comparative to the rest of that beach. Because of this, it is always heaving, so just keep walking. You will find huge stretches with no one there!||One negative about this stunning beach is that the resorts are supposed to collect seaweed and rubbish from the shoreline, as lots of plastic gets brought in, and while most do a reasonable job, some just rake the sand where loungers are and leave the rest, so I spent at least an hour plus, every day collecting it and giving it or dumping it by the closest resort. My feeling is, if they are making a living from the sea and beach, they should collect all the trash, not just some of it, really take care of it for everyone.||I loved Zamas Tulum, and would recommend it, however don’t bother getting a cottage on the other side of the road near the pool, as it’s too noisy from the sound of traffic on the busy road. It must have been idyllic years ago, unfortunately there’s only one road currently and lots of trucks providing water and services to all the resorts.

We booked this accommodation spontaneously and are so glad we did! We received a very warm welcome and even got an upgrade for a bigger room. The location, the pool, and the spacious room – everything was perfect! Just keep in mind that swimming at the beach isn’t really an option due to the seaweed. Other than that, I would absolutely stay here again. Thank you for an amazing experience!

We stayed at Zamas in mid-April with a large group for our senior year spring break and had the most wonderful experience! We were thrilled when we first arrived at this quaint and beautiful beachfront hotel, were immediately warmly greeted with free drink vouchers, and showed to our lovely room in the Coconut Grove part of the hotel. Our room was perfect, and the amazing receptionist Fernando even let us bring an extra mattress into the room to accommodate one of the party members. All of the staff was so accommodating, friendly, and helpful with the rooms, booking activities and transportation, and making sure that all of our needs were met. The food here is amazing, the hotel is clean, the staff is wonderful, and the beach is lovely, we couldn't have asked for a better stay at Zamas! Could not recommend enough!

Loved this place! We traveled with our 2 adult children (28) - Stayed in the Jungle Room which easily accommodated us with a queen size bed and two nice-sized twins. The room was spacious with an amazing bathroom! And there was an outdoor patio with hammocks and Adirondack chairs. Our room was a stone's throw from the pool which was wonderful (except one day when it was .taken over be a group of kids). Best part of our stay was the staff! They helped us book taxi transport from the new Tulum airport and also helped us engage a driver (Simone) for a day to go to Coba, Valladolid, and a (very touristy) cenote. We had breakfast at the hotel most days (alas, it's NOT included - which would have been nice) and dinner there twice including on Saturday night when they had guest chefs. Lots of beach lounges, chairs, and palm umbrellas . Only complaint is there were quite a few rocks in the water near shore that made it difficult to get out to the sandbar (especially for older folks like us!) Lots of restaurants, an ATM, and a 7-Eleven very near by. Room has a small fridge so easy to stock up with beer, water, etc. Finally, once again, the staff!! Everyone was so friendly & helpful. Would definitely stay here again.

Zamas in Tulum blew us away. We stayed in a cabana right on the beach—it was clean, comfortable, and steps from the ocean. Every detail felt thoughtful and authentic. The staff is amazing, and the whole place has a relaxed, welcoming energy. Susan and Dan, the owners, are incredible hosts who truly know hospitality. Erika, the manager, was so kind and helpful—we felt like part of the family. The food is unforgettable. The seafood was fresh and perfectly cooked, the huevos rancheros were the best I’ve ever had, and the margaritas? Legendary. But the real surprise? The Danny Burger—a smashed double patty burger that honestly might be the best burger I've ever eaten. Nothing compares. If you're heading to Tulum and want an authentic beachfront experience with heart, Zamas is it.
