The dealer's room at Anime Expo has closed and there's a brief lull between the con goings and the afternight shenanigans. My body has suffered a dozen debuffs from a day in cosplay and I haven't eaten in about 24 hours. Every restaurant within a mile of the convention center is hopelessly fisted, overpriced, and just overall ngmi.
Amidst all of this chaos, a newly opened Zankou chicken reaches down to rescue me. Was actually a bit more than a mile away, but definitely worth the wait. If you want a lot of delicious Mediterranean food at basically an okay price, it's hard to beat the classic chain found throughout LA.
The side-dishes went great on the pita - I got to try both the muttabal and hummus and they were both good. The chicken was tasty and well-seasoned as always. Tabbouleh and tahini were both good. Honestly, none of these dishes were remarkable (ie, I could imagine comparable quality at many restaurants or even really good grocery stores), but every single dish was basically solid and good.
This was also at a solid price point, at a clean dine-in restaurant, in a part of LA where both of those points are in short-supply!
Also, Zankou's Chicken in DTLA might also be the only restaurant in DTLA with an actually well-lit eating area, yet another plus!!
Highly recommended, especially if you're just hungry and in the area. Almost certainly the best option in the area for a "chain" restaurant as well.
