Oh! Zazie, Zazie Bistro, I was waiting to try you for a while. When I finally had occasion to taste something from the menu, it left me with a feeling of disappointment mixed with a dash of irritation.
The lunch menu looked very promising. I decided to have one cheese raviolo with chanterelles mushrooms and butter. Also, I chose snails with fava beans, orzo pasta, hollandaise sauce and fresh dill :).
Honestly, both dishes were very tiny, heavy on butter, and were also pretty bland. I enjoyed the raviolo, but the mushrooms needed more salt at least. The snails had only texture, no taste. They skimped on pasta, but not on butter or sauce. If I didn't have a beer, I would leave the restaurant hungry.
Surprisingly, I wasn't offered or suggested to order any bread or baguette with my food, and they didn't give any with the meal. It would add some balance and texture, plus it's a cheap way to make people feel happy.
I thought the zabaione was too sweet, but I enjoyed it the most anyway.
I also don't understand why they were making such a big deal about having reservations. I wanted to grab lunch the day before, but only tables downstairs in the empty basement were offered. The restaurant actually wasn't busy at the moment, and I could even sit at the bar with no problem.
I came back the next day and the first floor had only three tables occupied during my whole visit, including mine.
My server was polite, and the place was cute. I liked the solid and heavy silverware, but wished my food was tastier and the chef more thoughtful.
