Best Taco Tuesday Restaurants in the Bay Area | Eater

"This upscale Santana Row hotspot draws culinary inspiration from all over Mexico, but among the true highlights are its tacos, including Ensenada-style tempura fish tacos with cabbage slaw, cilantro, and morita chile mayonnaise, and Ensenada-style vegetarian tacos, where tofu gets the same treatment." - Vox Creative

We came for brunch. They provide both the brunch and lunch menu. Start you off with chips and two house made salsas, orange sauce was delicious we suspect it’s made with squash. We ordered the concha and quesadillas for openers. Concha’s are baked in house they had a sweet airy crispiness to them not too sweet. For drinks we had the fresh water of the day melon juice, green juice, and coffee all three drinks were fresh and made with real fruits/veggies/beans. For our main dish we got the omelette and arranchera and eggs. The meal was overall delicious, the staff was friendly/welcoming, and the ambiance is vibey but not too loud to where you cannot have a conversation. Great for girls brunch, date, families. Would come again. Shout out to our waitress Maria for being so attentive and making it a nice experience.

Loved our business dinner at this entertaining Mexican restaurant in the heart of Santana row. Food 5/5. Entertainment 5/5. Atmosphere 5/5. Service 5/5. We were seated there outdoor right by the live music. Ordered guacamole table service which was very authentic and entertaining. I ordered mariscos plate which was abundant and tasty. Highly recommended.

The vibe is fantastic and very enjoyable, and the food is excellent. I was a bit disappointed to see that the fajitas have been removed from the dinner menu and are now only available for lunch until 3 PM—I really hope they bring them back! The guacamole is amazing, especially since they make it fresh right in front of you. Highly recommend!

It was so comfortable to have brunch here on the weekend, with comfortable seats and great service. The waiter recommended us to order waffle de tamal verde $22 and Enchiladas Suizas $26, both of which were good but the portion was small. The service was very attentive and good.

We really enjoyed the food, service, and atmosphere. Welcomed warmly the second we arrived by super friendly hosts. We loved the guacamole served table side! We ordered Arrachera Norteña and Enchiladas Poblanas. Also pictured: Zazil Margarita and Roasted Jalepeño Margarita! We will be back for sure!

I was visiting Santana Row on a Saturday night and stumbled upon this place. It was either here or the Tequilla lounge right next-door. I picked this place because they had food and I wanted something to munch on. I got here around 9 PM and there was no wait for a table outside our server was super nice, but I did not get her name. I ended up getting some drinks and the Carne Asada plate. I got a margarita. It was good average nothing amazing. My food came out fairly quick. I received a small portion of skirt steak some onions and a bean dip type thing. The steak looked amazing. I wish it would’ve tasted how it looked. I would give it a two out of 10 the meat had no flavor whatsoever. I’m not sure if they forgot to season it or what but I was extremely disappointed in it. I wish I could justify spending over $40 for that plate if the meat would’ve been good but it was not I think next time I’m in the area I’ll just go to Yard House or one of the other restaurants nearby. The ambience was nice both inside and out. I liked that my server was very attentive and asked if we needed anything else. I told her that the gentleman who brought my food asked if I needed more salsa and I told them yes and he never brought it. She made sure everything was right.

Food is great!!! Our server JOHAN is very nice, recommended the restaurant specialties! We had a great lunch! For sure will come back!

Google
This place is mostly about location. It has a nice corner of Santana Row and an open concept that allows for plenty of people watching. You definitely are paying a premium for this. For example, my enchiladas suizas were $25 and didn't even come with rice or beans.

Yelp
Guacamole was fresh! Grilled Octopus looked small, but portion was perfect and filling, especially with the chorizo pieces.

Yelp
Skirt steak was quite flavorful and the guacamole experience was fun. Drinks were so good and Andres was a good server who was mindful and kind

Yelp
great service and food, our 5 y.o. picky eater loves this place. Our server Eva is always helpful and so nice!

Yelp
Love Zazil! Everything is high quality and the staff check up to make sure the experience is going well. Food and drinks are always amazing and delicious and you really can't go wrong with anything. For the price the portions are pretty big. The live music is very nice but can be loud if you're right next to the table, which we were. The drinks were so good and the right amount of sweetness. The empanadas were delicious and so flavorful, my favorite! The main dishes were also good, really filling and yummy.

Yelp
I wanted to like this place, but there were a lot of disappointments during the experience. At first, we checked in with the host and we had a reservation. They told us they were getting the seats ready so we waited aside at the door, which didn't have a lot of space. We ended up having to shift sound a few times as people made their way in or out of the restaurant. It was an awkward waiting spot for me. Then, they guide us to our table and we sat down. I noticed that our table was missing a plate and some utensils. It wasn't "ready". We looked at the menu and ordered our food. This isn't a big thing, but the menu was difficult to manage. There were a lot of different papers and they weren't bound together, but rather displayed on a clipboard. Again, not a big deal, but just something I noticed. They started us off with chips and salsa, and that's when we noticed the missing items on the table. I was missing a plate and utensils, and my friend didn't have utensils. For appetizers, we ordered the elote and the tacos de cochinito. The tacos were the best dish that night. The elote was not bad in terms of flavor, but it's not shareable. It came in a pair and there was four of us. I just found it quite difficult to eat without getting messy. Could be my fault for ordering elote at a restaurant. I believe the three other dishes were carnitas del Pueblo, pollo cremoso, and chile relleno. Out of these three, the chile relleno was the best. The chicken in pollo cremoso was overcook and dry. The carnitas was also on the drier side. Overall, not the experience I was hoping for and for the quality, I just didn't think it was worth the price.

Yelp
I have never been as disappointed in a meal as I was in Zazil. I had higher hopes for it - it's mainly a restaurant, so it should be better than the El Jardin Tequila bar right? The menu looked thoughtfully designed, and I always drooled over the large molcajete filled with guacamole. Let me tell you the food was barely edible! - the gacamole was prepared tableside in a large communal molcajete and had a strange taste to it. Not exactly like rancid oils but along that vein. How do you mess up guac like that? - my Milanese de Res was supposed to be a breaded steak, but the "steak" was smashed so flat it was basically non existent so each bite was just oily rancid breading - the Mariscos was a giant pile of greasy fried pieces that we could only stomach a few bites from - my friend reported the Carne Asada was fine but you could get better options elsewhere for less than $40 All this for nearly $70 per person without alcohol. I've given up on eating in Santana Row, as everything is expensive and terrible. Logistics: - indoor and outdoor seating - several paid parking garages nearby

Yelp
I honestly don't know how this place is still in business. The location is beautiful and deserves a much better restaurant. I've been here a few times and had generally "okay" experiences, but today was very disappointing. I brought a colleague for lunch after 1:00 p.m. on a Friday. It wasn't busy, so there was really no excuse for the slow service we experienced. We ordered guacamole and our entrées. The entrées arrived first, and then five minutes later someone wheeled over a cart to make the guacamole--which we declined since we had expected it before the food. The food itself was lackluster. My colleague's carnitas came as a little pot of meat, a pot of watery black beans, and some tortillas. My cheese enchiladas were more like soup--I even had to ask for a soup spoon. I ended up ordering rice just to bulk it up. For these two unimpressive entrées, rice, and two sodas, we spent $100. That's ridiculous. Service was equally poor--our waitress barely checked on us, and after we paid, she ignored us entirely while we sat there for an hour finishing our conversation. I work across the street, but I will not be bringing customers here or recommending it. It's a very pretty setting and I've enjoyed the cocktails before, but the food and service do not deserve such a great spot.

Yelp
The food was fantastic! The chips were super fresh with salsa and an amazing chipotle mayonnaise. We had fish tacos and I ordered black beans. The tres leches cake was unique and very flavorful. As for drinks, we ordered the Dead Rabbit (loved it), the Mexico Mi Amor (dad was so so on it, I liked it), and Zazhilito mojito (fantastico). The music was the perfect level, and the decor and tables were quite welcoming on the whole - thank you for not having the music blazing! The service was very thorough and quick as well, making for a great dining experience and one that didn't feel like they were rushing to get you in and out. The tofu salad was kind of sour - ensalada del pueblo, per my partner, and they were out of pollo cremosa on a Saturday, which is why we left 4 stars. Great experience all and all, and I hope that we can come back again and experience this place fully!

Yelp
I can't believe it's my first time trying Zazil, as I've been to Santana Row a million times. We had a really positive experience here. The decor is modern Mexican. Blue-colored tiles, dark ceiling with wood beams lining it, neutral canvas light fixtures casting a warm glow. It has the cool vibe you'd expect from a Santana Row restaurant. The service was attentive. From our server, to the woman who made our guacamole table side, to the guy who kept masterfully filling our chip bowl without dropping a single chip on the table, the service was seamless all around. Now onto the food. We ordered the guacamole made tableside. It's perfect because you can tailor it to exactly what you want in it. It was fresh and tasty. For my entree, I went with the grilled salmon, served with an almond chipotle sauce and grilled vegetables. The fish and sauce were well seasoned and cooked just right. But I found the grilled vegetables to be kind of sparse and wished the entree had been served with some kind of carb. Fortunately, the kiddo shared some of his rice with me. Others at our table ordered the enchiladas suizas and poblanas and the arrachera Norteno (skirt steak). Everyone cleared their plates, which I always think speaks volumes about the food. We visit Santana Row quite often, and we plan to come visit again. Very solid, upscale Mexican food dining experience.

Yelp
I dined here last summer and totally forgot to write a review! Spacious open air indoor/outdoor dining. It was a typical warm August evening and there was an overhead hanging plant that kept dripping random water droplets ... Service was pretty good from our waiter at the time. Complimentary chips & two kinds of salsa. My favorite was the warm, creamy orange one with a kick, which our waiter brought extra of. Drinks: *Zazhilito Mojitos (mango purée) Eats: *Empanadas de Camaron *Ceviche Camaron *Pulpo a la Parilla (octopus taco) My friend initially ordered a different cocktail but didn't like it. Staff were so nice and obliged to bring over a mojito instead. Empanadas were gooey with melted cheese and loaded with chunks of shrimp. Ceviche was refreshing. Kinda surprised at the small portion size for the Pulpo. Pricey for what you get but it's expected at the Row. Nice place to unwind. Reservations available but walk in isn't too bad.

Yelp
I have now dined at Zazil approximately ten times and I have to lower my rating from 5 stars to 4. Yes, the food is still great and mostly high quality, the problem is the service. We are left waiting far too long and too often. Oddly, there are lots of people working here at one time. I have truly never seen so many people dressed in black and gathered together talking - the gatherings have the look of management meetings. All go on far too long while customers sit and wait for their servers. I have no idea what is going on, but we literally have gone there 3 times in a row where they had these meetings. Simply stuff: After you drop food off, go back in a few minutes to ensure all is well. When someone arrives, be sure to greet them quickly to ensure they know you see them. We get left before anyone reaches us quite often. Sometimes our waiter would go by without even glancing at the table, where he might have noticed we unhinged our jaws and ate all the chips. Waiting means being aware without hovering or disappearing. You guys can fix this issue. I hope the service issues will improve. We will keep eating there with diminished expectations of service in the meantime. . . .

Yelp
It was my Birthday lunch and Eva was so awesome. She was super helpful and explained the menu well and was very accommodating to my dietary restrictions

Yelp
This is more of an upscale Mexican dining experience. We came on a Monday late afternoon, and the place was pretty empty aside from a couple of small groups, which made for a quiet and relaxed meal. They started us off with complimentary chips and salsa, which is always appreciated. We ordered the guac as an appetizer and got a couple of drinks as well. The guacamole is made right in front of you in a lil molcajete--kind of a gimmick in my opinion, especially since the guac itself was pretty mediocre. I would've much rather had a well-seasoned, flavorful guacamole that didn't need the tableside prep. For drinks, I had the Oaxacan mule, which was deceivingly strong. It was a great twist on a classic mule--super tasty and balanced. For lunch, we ordered the enchiladas suizas. Fair warning: the portion isn't huge, but the dish is dense and filling. The green sauce was bright and flavorful, probably the highlight of the meal. A little on the pricey side overall, but that's to be expected for Santana Row and it matches the upscale vibe and aesthetic of the restaurant. That said, I do wish they had more of a happy hour--it would make it a bit more accessible for casual visits.

Yelp
Great food and great service! The ambiance was a vibe too! We ordered their beef fajitas with white rice and black beans, and a side of their fried plantains. It was fire! We also ordered a mango margarita, which was so refreshing! Definitely coming back.

Yelp
Great ambiance and service. Perfect place to go during the summer since it's an indoor/outdoor combo. Big menu and some good food. The empanadas with shrimp were soooo good. 10/10. I'd never gotten mole before, which was on the enchiladas poblanas. I'm not sure if I'm not a fan of mole, or if it was the sauce, but I had to choke it down. 3/10. The coconut daiquiri was pretty good too. 8/10. Had toasted, but not sweet, coconut shavings on top that added to the look, but not the taste.

Yelp
I've been here several times with my friends, but last night my husband and I came out for our anniversary and had a lovely time. Reyna was our server, and she was so sweet and attentive. Even before I mentioned our anniversary, we had a great dinner. Great service by the whole staff, the food is always delicious (table side guacamole! Ahhhhmazing), and my seasonal cocktail was so good. At the end of our meal, I casually mentioned that we were out for our 18 year anniversary and our meal was so nice, and Reyna asked if we could wait a little bit so she could bring simmering out for us. The restaurant treated us to a treat, and it was the perfect finish to a fun date night. Thanks so much Reyna and everyone at Zazil for helping us have a lovely anniversary!

Yelp

Yelp

Yelp
Visited Zazil on a Wednesday evening as a group of 5 for a team outing! Happy hour is from 3-6pm and we just so happened to show up 10 minutes before it ended. On the happy hour menu, we got two portions of guacamole and then each of us got a Zazil Margherita. On the main menu, we got Jalapeño Margheritas, two portions of quesadillas, two portions of vegetarian tacos, and one portion of the lasagna. For dessert, we got two tres leches and one me late chocolate. We all loved our drinks! The veggie tacos and quesadillas were tasty. My personal favorite was the taco, the tofu paired nicely with the creamy mayo! On the other hand, we were not huge fans of the lasagna - it missed the mark and didn't have much flavor to it, mostly tasted like vegetables and tomato sauce. The guacamole was decent but could have had more jalapeños and lime in it. The unlimited chips were nice and crispy. The tres leches cake was ok, and the me late chocolate was more bitter than I expected. It was a bit noisy inside but the decor is nice! Overall, it was a good spot for a team outing but if I were to return, it would be for the happy hour drinks. The portion sizes were small, and the dishes were a hit or miss.

Yelp
Wonderful service, and staff. came to chat and catch up. Drink menus was wonderfully curated! This is from March so I'm not sure if the menus rotate! Here are some of my favorite

Yelp
The ambience was great and the location is what brought us to the restraurant The food was underwhelming The fish tacos had a bad after taste and were bland The salmon taste wasnt great either

Yelp
We ate here after a long time of wanting to try this place and came in and tried the food and drinks and it was very good. We ordered several items and Lisa helped us out and was very nice and professional. The food was fresh and the staff very friendly and accommodating.

Yelp
This restaurant has a great location and many people were eating here. We were going to get a drink while waiting for our friends but then we ended up eating here. My husband ordered a beef dish and I ordered the chille reyeno. I tried both and neither was good. Both were too saucy and too salty. We each had 2 of their special cocktails, $17 each and didn't really taste any alcohol. If you are looking for good ambience, this is a good place to try. But I'd recommend getting only the freshly made guac.
google avatar

Tony L.

Yelp
We really love this spot. The wife and I had a kid free day got a massage and ended it with some zazil! We went super hungry and we decided to split the tacos again. We also added the chile relleno. You'll notice a few glamor shots of the chile. It was beautiful and came with a cheese crisp hat! I have actually never experienced a dish like this. Typically a chile relleno is stuffed with cheese breaded, fried, and served drenched in sauce. This experience was much different. The chile was almost a deconstructed version and each component added a layer of deep flavor and emotion to the journey. I was really impressed with this dish. We ordered the pineapple aqua-Fresca with mint and really enjoyed the light fresh flavor. The lunch service was outstanding. The whole restaurant is inviting and relaxing, with plants hanging from the ceiling. Love this place. Go there. Enjoy.

Yelp
Eva b was the best server we have had in the last couple years across all restaurants!
google avatar

Yelp
I came here for a group dinner on Wednesday and we enjoyed it! The tableside guacamole was delicious, and I really liked that they had fun and unique mocktails on the menu. My friend and I shared the quesadillas with chicken and the tacos with pork belly. Both were good, but the quesadillas didn't have a lot of cheese (they were basically tacos), and the pork belly was so crispy that it was almost hard. However, the food was not bad. Our servers came around often to clear empty glasses and bring new drinks. I'd go back!
google avatar

Carol S.

Yelp
Very good ambience. They had live music but I stayed inside. The chips are soooooo good! I love them! The poke appetizer had too much dressing for my taste but it was good. I ordered the file mignon and it was okay too! The food presentation looks better than the taste but it was a great experience overall.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent food and service!!! Will be coming back for sure . I enjoyed their fish tacos very delicious and definitely recommend to order when coming to visit
google avatar

Yelp
The carne asada plate was delicious. The service was great. The table side guac was very tasty and she even put extra jalapeños for us. The vibe is super chill and trendy. Definitely would recommend if you're in the San Jose area.

Yelp
The ambience at this place is intimate and cozy. As vegetarians we tried the following: Gaucomole - 4/5. This was some really good gauc. They made it at our table , which is quite a cute experience. Only thing to fault it is that the quantity was less. Elote - 2/5. This one was on the cob and was a definite miss. It was just lathered in butter and cheese. Might skip this next time. Chipotle smashed potatoes: 4/5. This was slightly runny otherwise the flavor was spot on. Vegetarian Tacos : 4/5. This one was pretty good. Chili Releno : 4/5. I really liked the sauce this came in. For deserts we tried the following: Flan : 5/5. The texture was really nice. Tres leches: 5/5. Really enjoyed that it came with fresh fruit. However the portion was way too small. Chocolate pudding: 2/5. This was a complete miss. It was dark chocolate mostly. Would have liked it to be slightly sweeter

Yelp
I had a great dinner. Beets roots tortilla tacos cones in 3 tacos for $25. That's fair price for Santana row. Plus their two complimentary salsa & chips are the best in the Bay Area. I'm a big foodie. I fell in love. Came here with a friend. Next time, I will bring my sister here. The menu is broad and many cocktails to pick too. Waiter is attentive but not so much English. But he knew which dishes are good and which cocktail is the strongest. Not to mentioned their ambience is so relaxing!
google avatar

Coco L.

Yelp
Came here for dinner the other night and was underwhelmed. The restaurant itself is nice inside and looks like it could be a good spot for a date night however the food was not that great. There are plenty of restaurants on Santana Row and given how pricey it is here, I expected better. Prior to eating here, I was looking on Yelp to see what people were ordering. It looks like they've changed the menu a few times. I was interested in getting the fajitas but found out they don't serve that for dinner anymore. I was also interested in the fish tacos but my menu didn't list that either. I decided on the salmon entree with mixed vegetables and wow the portion was tiny. It also listed that it came with vegetables but it was basically just some corn and thinly sliced carrots and zucchini. The chips and salsa were just okay. The chipotle salsa had a nice kick but the salsa verde tasted watered down and was missing some jalapeños. I feel that service could've been better given that gratuity was automatically added to the bill. They didn't check on us that much. It was also hard to flag someone down when we needed something. I'm glad I got to try it but I'm not in a rush to come back.
google avatar

Christian V.

Yelp
Our server LISA was amazing. So friendly and welcoming. Such a light. The food was good. Especially the queso fundido and el pulpo en la parilla. I would come back for both of those. The restaurant has low lighting and not too loud that we can not hear each other.

Michael B.

Yelp
just one of those days on a Monday when you wanna get a good meal and good service and Zazil with Armando provided great service and very pleasant. great atmosphere and the guacamole was perfect. Made right oh thank you so much. OK thank you very much again there at your table.
google avatar

Dave D.

Yelp
Zazil is clean and elegant, and relatively new to Santana Row. We went with a group of friends and the service was really good and friendly. The bottomless chips and salsa are great. I tried the enchiladas suizas which I really wouldn't recommend. While it had generous amounts of chicken and cheese, the sauce was overpowering and sour. The enchiladas poblanos with the mole sauce was much better. Flavorful with really good chicken. The carnitas plate was good as well. Other friends got omelette and the huevos rancheros. I don't like eggs so I'd never try it, but I didn't hear any complaints. I'll go back. This is a good restaurant with really great service.
google avatar

Angela P.

Yelp
Absolutely EXQUISITE food and drinks. The mango margarita was delicious with a tajin rim, and I learned about zero proof tequila for the first time from their nonalcoholic drinks Omar and the rest of the staff took great care of us and we were in good hands the whole time. I loved the ambiance inside and the warmth and joy they created with the beautiful greenery and decorations. We enjoyed the guacamole with the flautas and salmon. 10 out of 10 would come back again! They also had live music outside tonight (Thursday) so that's something to look forward to
google avatar

Wendy C.

Yelp
Came here for brunch on lunar new year weekend. Loved that they played Latin/Chinese fusion instrumental inside! The decor and the vibe inside was also good, but of course that's what you're paying for. Service was good. Ordered the chilaquiles and a quesadilla dish. They were both good, but the meat in the quesadilla was a little dry. Liked that beans for the chilaquiles came in a cute separate little pot. Ordered two cocktails but they didn't really feel strong so BOOO. Overall don't feel a need to try again, because if you're going to charge a lot (for drinks), you gotta taste darn good/strong.
google avatar

Jon P.

Yelp
Always excellent here! Love the atmosphere here especially on the weekends, fan of the tacos and the margaritas. The trompo is a particular favorite, aka tacos al pastor. Not many places bring the cooker straight to the table. Happy hour is great option for mid week and brings down the cost too. Big shout out to Andres who served us on our recent visit, very welcoming, quick on everything and made the whole experience top notch. Cheers!

Yelp
Ambiance Moody lighting with large light fixtures, open seating bar, and plenty of tables in the main dining area. There's window seating where you can people-watch and see views of the bustling Santana Row strip. Customer Service Excellent customer service was provided throughout my experience by our server, Eva B. She recommended special menu items to order from and was very prompt with providing our food and refill requests. Food Starter Complimentary warm and freshly made tortilla chips were served with green salsa and chipotle condiments. Mains Ceviche Camarón - $20 Served with 5 large shrimp, cubed cucumber, jalapeño, cilantro, and orange-citrus marinade. The complimentary tortilla chips paired nicely with this refreshing dish and was easily shareable between 2 people. Flautas de Papa - $24 The tortillas were very crispy and came with chorizo, salsa verde, queso fresco, and sour cream, and shredded lettuce. The queso fresco looked like a mountain of cheese, but it was a perfect portion for the dish. This was my favorite dish and I would order it again. Pollo y Mole - $28 The dish was served with airline chicken breast, mole sauce, and rice. The chicken was a bit too dry and hard to cut. The mole was thick and is one of the best I've had in awhile. Drink Strawberry Aqua Fresca - $5 This was the drink of the day on the menu. It was so light, refreshing, and not overly sweet. Decor Neutral and natural wood aesthetics. This place is perfect for a happy hour, casual outing, or date night. Minus 1 star for the 5% small mandate fee on the receipt.

Yelp
Great experience. Atmosphere & service was awesome and music had me wanting to dance while eating. Our waitress Reyna was amazing and when we had a little hiccup with our food order she was on it so fast and gracefully. She made our visit to Zazil that much better.

Yelp
I am always skeptical when a restaurant doesn't even have 4 stars on yelp but I liked the ambience and vibes and have also walked past this place like 40 times and so we tried it and I have to say I was really impressed and delighted!! First off, service was great. Waitress came by often. We were sat at one of the tables facing the theater. Very nice place to sit. I tried the lemonade with lavender and it was ok. It looks super pretty though! She didn't tell me she was going to pour the lavender in though and that would have been a nice video. Oh well. My boyfriend and I weren't that hungry so we just shared the enchiladas suizas, which used to be my favorite dish at Pedro's in Los Gatos. We did the chicken option and omg to die for. A lot of cheese but delicious!!!! Also the complimentary chips and salsa is so fresh and flavorful with the perfect amount of spice! My bf also loved their mezcal margaritas! And a new friend (she works at the row) walking by mentioned they have really good mezcal margaritas too. Highly recommend. Great experience!
