The Most Underrated Restaurants in Denver | Eater Denver

"Boulder’s Pearl Street has always been a hot spot for restaurants, and Zeal combines healthy, organic fare in a hip yet casual atmosphere. There are plenty of options for those with gluten or dairy sensitivities along with meat eaters and vegans alike. Offerings include meatballs and zucchini noodles in tikka masala sauce, build-your-own bowls, and kale and beet salad. Also try the cold-pressed fruit and vegetable juices." - Rebecca Treon

Google
Nice place. Food was good. Great options for vegans and vegetarians and GF diners. I got the curry and it was flavorful but the veggies were a tad undercooked but that could be my personal preference. Avocado toast and veggie sandwich was also great. The desserts sounded awesome and they had so many vegan and GF dessert options! There is a parking garage close by and they validate parking.

Google
Zeal is one of my favorite restaurants in Boulder! The food is so thoughtfully curated, quality sourced, and so much love and intention can be felt. It’s hard for me to find places I can go out to eat that don’t make me feel icky after and zeal always makes me feel great. The food is so clean. Highly recommend!

Google
I’ve been going to Zeal for a while, and have always had the best experience. The food is delicious and leaves me feeling great! The staff members are always kind and you can tell the owner, Wayde, truly cares about his food and his customers. My mom and I have celiac, and have never had an issue eating here. Plus, the juices here are one of my favorite things ever! The Red and the Sun-kissed juices are my go-tos. I still drive to Boulder to eat here even after moving!!

Google
Delicious organic food made with passion. First restaurant that’s plastic free 👌. Staff is great and friendly. I highly recommended Zeal.

Google
I got the gf Mac and cheese with pork and it was so good. Great portion sizes and I loved the flavor and noodles. I usually don’t like spicy food but the sauce on the pasta was super yummy. I want to come try the whole menu! I also thought it was cool how it can be vegan and gf but still possible to add meat & cheese if not vegan. Great accommodations for dietary restrictions!

Google
We were greeted right away. They had a diverse selection of options. Both food and drink. There were five of us and each had something different. We all loved our meal.

Google
This is my favorite restaurant in Boulder. They are seed oil free, organic, and locally sourced. Amazing fresh juices and meals that will please both meat eaters and vegan.

Google
I’ve recently had a fantastic dinner and lunch at zeal. The food was so fresh and tasty. It’s harder than you think to find a really good salad in this town at lunchtime, which is hard to believe but zeal has great options on the menu. We absolutely loved the beef chimichurri bites. They’re so delicious. I could eat 10 orders of them. Staff is always very friendly and welcoming. And they actually have a pretty nice drink list, which was fun at dinner time. They will also validate your parking in the garage!

Yelp
5 Stars Zeal is seriously a vibe! I grabbed the Zeal Burger and lentil soup, and wow--SO good. The burger was juicy and flavorful without that heavy feeling after, and the soup? Cozy, hearty, and just what I needed. Now let's talk drinks--matcha and golden mylk. The matcha was smooth and energizing, and the golden mylk was like a warm hug in a cup. Both felt super clean and crafted with care. The whole place has this fresh, feel-good energy. You walk in and instantly feel healthier just being there. Highly recommend if you want something delicious, nourishing, and actually exciting.

Yelp
It's late but I'm still up thinking about it...More specifically, that crispy, juicy buffalo cauliflower that shattered all expectations (and maybe my willpower). It was bold, it was tender, it was...everything. I still don't know how you made a vegetable taste like a secret rendezvous--but I'm not mad about it. And don't even get me started on that skinny margarita. Pineapple cucumber? Refreshing and indulgent? It kissed my lips like a summer breeze and whispered, "you deserve this." I tasted faint notes of sunshine and possibly, enlightenment. Now I can't help but wonder... what about the rest of the menu? What other delicious affairs await me? Zeal, you've got my attention--and maybe my heart. I'll be back.... Soon I hope.

Yelp
My wife and I were very excited to try Zeal while in town visiting. We love Mediterranean food and my wife has to eat gluten free and the fact they are all organic is awesome! The food was flavorful and the service was great. The atmosphere is very cozy and relaxing. They have ample outdoor seating as well. I really enjoyed the lamp gyro and medi plate. We almost made it back a second time but just didn't have the time to while in town. Maybe next time for sure.

Yelp
This place is amazing!!! Loved everything I tried over several days! Organic and gluten free/vegan options were fabulous!! The desserts were also great!! Don't skip the dessert! I will return every chance I can!!!

Yelp
They had a great menu with lots of options. We had the steak and chimichurri bites and buffalo cauliflower. Everything was delicious and I look forward to trying other menu items.small inside dining with a few booths and community table. Parking in the garage nearby. Service was great with only one waiter during lunch hour.

Yelp
The salmon bowl & cauli wings were delish!! Such fresh ingredients and amazing service. Plus the outdoor seating was so cute. Will be back!!

Yelp
Zeal is my preferred dining spot in Boulder for a nutritious and flavorful meal. Wayde is the proud owner of this amazing establishment that specializes in serving healthful and delectable treats. The atmosphere is relaxed, featuring ample natural light, along with charming jokes at every table and a central table with puzzles for an added touch of fun. Their motto, "The Food That Loves You Back," truly encapsulates the experience. Order the Dosa + Masala and a side of Crispy French Fries. The fries are the best, perfectly delicious crispiness.

Yelp
Delicious. Healthy choices. Affordable. Must try. Great location also. College town atmosphere.

Yelp
I loved the variety and everything we tried was delicious; especially the mighty ball and Curry... Oh, and the caulli-wings were amazing!

Yelp
The glowing reviews here are well deserved. We came here with our incoming freshman at CU and loved the food! The burger, curry chicken, buffalo cauliflower, the local beer, the vegan cheesecake...every dish was fantastic. Gorgeous atmosphere too. But really the highlight was the conversation at the bar/counter with two of the students who work there. They were so gracious, chatting with us about life at CU while they worked. Afterwards, my son said if the rest of the students are as friendly and down to earth as these two he's really going to love it here!

Yelp
Wow some of the best veggie/vegan food we've had. Such a cute place and really nice staff only add to the truly delicious food they have! Pretty quick service -- we went on a weekday. This place is definitely going to get really big and popular so going to try to make it up to Boulder from Denver before it does!!

Yelp
Delicious food and very sensitive to a variety of dietary needs in our group (vegetarian, gluten free, dairy free). My friend said the dairy free/gluten free desert was the best she's ever had. I found the spicy goddess salad to be top notch! We delighted in the atmosphere and parking was easy in the garage next door with parking validation available as well. We will be back on our next trip to Colorado! Thanks!

Yelp
I am staying in an Airbnb five minutes away and was searching for vegetarian friendly restaurants within walking distance. This little restaurant popped up and I immediately headed over. As a vegetarian, I feel like I never have options at restaurants but that certainly was not the case here. They have a variety of healthy choices to enjoy while sitting in their cute little outdoor patio. I had the açaí bowl and cauliflower bites (weird combination but it worked for me;-)! I am heading back today to try something new. I highly recommend!

Dara W.

Yelp
Went in for smoothies and while they were really tasty, not worth the price. The ingredients were quite nice but the consistency was thin as if too much water was added. The staff were super nice and friendly but it took a long time for smoothies to be made. I can make better ones at home.

Yelp
Recently tried Zeal and was a fan. I got the kombucha old fashioned, which was pretty good, and the zeal burger which was delicious, and maybe one of my favorite burgers in Boulder! I've had it several times since, and it's just such a solid, simple burger with really tasty meat! The potatoes are also awesome and perfectly seasoned. The vegan caesar, however, is not good at all, way too salty and doesn't at all resemble a caesar salad (in taste or appearance.) The service was admittedly kinda weird, and our server seemed confused herself about what was going on and couldn't answer any questions we had about the menu, but I'll still be back for the burger :)

Yelp
I love this place, fresh pressed juices on demand, staff is great, food is great. Now that im single I have to bring a hot date there! lets go

Yelp
I really enjoyed this restaurant as a Whole-Food Plant based eater. There are many vegan options along with other items on the menu. Real food, variety of vegetables and colors and really low oil. Sits in the same building as a hotel but is a separate business. Seated immediately. Waiter was pleasant and friendly. Atmosphere was modern with lots of exposed steel and sturdy wood seating and table tops. We ordered the Dosa appetizer and it came out quickly. Not a meal in itself but good to share with one other person. The sauces were very good flavored and little to no oils in them. Came with a bowl of Sambar soup that had lots of flavor and vegetables and very little oil. Our entrees arrived after about 10 minutes total time in the restaurant. I ordered simple Mac N Cheese (all vegan) and it came out with a hot temperature (impressive!) and the vegan cheese sauce was very smooth with very good cheesy flavor. The noodles were a mini penne pasta and cooked just right - al dente. The spouse ordered the Veggie sandwich. She forgot to ask for no oil added to the bread so there was a fair bit of oil on the bread. The falafel patty was very firm and flavorful. The other veggies on it were tomato, avocado, leafy green and the harissa sauce was NOT spicy which is good as spouse does NOT like spicy foods. I really enjoyed this meal and will definitely return when in Boulder next.

Yelp
It's hard to say what is the worst part of this restaurant. The staff are friendly, but barely serve you. Apparently napkins are too expensive to give to customers. And today I ordered food and every part of the dish was way too spicy from what I had experienced previously when I sent back our food. Then, when it came time to pay the bill, they made me pay for the food that I sent back.. So here is there a review I lieu

Karen ..

Yelp
Im new here and just randomly found this place as I was searching the Internet to find a healthy place to take my son who was visiting in town. I was up for a pleasant surprise. The ambience was amazing. The service was amazing. The server was amazing -his name was Victor - and he was friendly and knowledgeable. The Food was absolutely delicious- a wonderful and fun/ healthy menu! I'm gonna make this a regular place. I have to stay on a strict keto diet and oh my gosh I enjoyed every bite and did not even go off my keto. Thank you Zeal. KT from Boulder.

Yelp
Wow, just wow! Finding a place for my mom and I to eat can be a challenge for the most part, dealing with so many allergies/intolerances (gluten, dairy, etc.) So when she came to town we were scouring the menus of boulder for some yummy gf/df options. Surprisingly there wasn't as much as we thought. We tried out zeal one afternoon and we were both AMAZED at how delicious everything turned out. Best cauliflower wings we've ever had, best vegan/ gf mac and cheese we've ever had, best cocktails. And the desserts... well we tried all of them and damn they were good. Zeal impressed us so much we came back a second time within the week. Mom keeps saying "I wish we had a zeal where I live!" I will be back for the foreseeable future

Yelp
We were staying right next door at the Hyatt and came here for lunch. It was so good! My husband had the Zeal burger with super crispy, thin fries. I couldn't stop stealing them off his plate! I had the lentil soup served with a slice of delicious grilled bread. Thank you!

Fatima H.

Yelp
The excuses for food not served as described on the menu: 'the chef is new' The portions are minuscule relative to the price. I ordered the lamb gyro which came out cold. The zucchini fritters were burnt and the cauliflower wings were soggy. Meh!

Kitty A.

Yelp
What happened to Zeal? It is nothing like it was when it resided on Pearl and 17th. The food was not good ~ like warmed up leftovers, and barely warm. Not much flavor and not much of it. The service was okay - great warm and immediate welcome, though it took a while for our wait person to get to us even though there were only two other people in the whole place. We ordered an appetizer (Zucchini fritters - not too bad) and a beverage and I told him we wanted to wait to order since I did not want the main dishes coming out too soon. He said he could take the order now and that he would wait to put in the order, but he didn't. He then didn't come back to ask how everything was until we were almost done. My husband got the gyro and it tasted nothing like a traditional gyro and the pita was soggy - the fries were good though! I had the mac & cheese w/chicken and local mushrooms. It was barely warm, had 4 mushroom slices and the chicken was horrible - luke warm, marbled with fat and tasted gamey. We did not want to take a chance with dessert. We were hopeful but terribly disappointed. We will not be coming back.

Yelp
Honestly wasn't too impressed with their dinner menu ...I think this place would be better to try out for breakfast as they had more offerings ...more meatless options. Did order their juice flight and enjoyed. I liked the flight idea.

Yelp
My hubby & I were going to catch a Sat. night movie at 29th St., so wanted a bite to eat that was healthy, but simple. He'd been to Zeal with a friend before, & thought it might be ok for dinner. We looked at the menu & agreed to try it. Sadly we were somewhat disappointed. He ordered Posole, & there literally was no posole visible in it -- just a sort of a soup. AND although he likes spicy food, this was so "picante" it was nearly inedible. The main plus was the burger, very tasty local meat & natural, and was cooked as I'd ordered it. The french fries also were nicely done, obviously cut in the kitchen. However, I asked TWICE for mayonnaise (it's a flaw in my character, what can I say), & no one ever could furnish me with any for the fries. There was some other service-lacking element we were disappointed in, but I can't remember it. The ambiance was strange -- not a true Boulder feeling. I suppose being in a hotel, in a newly constructed, uber-urban environment where you can't even see the mountains makes it "less Boulder". (It felt like NY or some big city.) As a longtime Boulder resident, I felt sorry for the CU parents, or other visitors eating there -- not a representative place. $60+ & we weren't totally satisfied. Oh well. I might try it again for lunch, as there were various healthy options, as other reviewers have mentioned here.

Yelp
Went to boulder today to get some take out for me and a friend who is down on her luck and living out there. She threw out a few choices that offered some vegan food and ultimately we decided on this one. Pros : Initially i thought we would be eating at the restaurant doing outside dining. She has gotten really thin however and the weather was cool so she wanted to eat at the place she is staying. It was super easy to make a online table reservation. It was also super easy to cancel it when I realized we were doing take out instead. Ordering online was super easy for take out. They had all the ingredients listed. And also when you order they ask about nearly every possible dietary restriction you could think of. You can easily select about your diet and mark any changes you need to make (if any) Pick up, being that I am not super familiar with boulder, google maps did not take me directly to the restaurant. It took me up the street a bit. Its on teh corner of pearl. its next to the hyatt but not in the hyatt. google took me to the hyatt. I called though and they directed me to the restaurant. They were super kind about it. They do have curbside pickup. Which is great! Because parking looked like it could be tough honestly. though since I am not from the area maybe i just dont know where good parking might be. My friend loved her vegan mac and cheese! She thought it was amazing! It certainly smelled super awesome! Cons : The prices were a little bit on the high side? At least for the smoothies and juices. The food prices were on par for higher end vegan options. I personally did not enjoy the green machine smoothie at all..... I choked it down but I dont think I have ever paid that much for a smoothie in my life..... $12..... I thought it was going to be amazing. I am happy to pay $6 for my beautiful nektar smoothies that i love so much and get often. But $12 and it was honestly just gross. no other way to put it. Hate to say that about a small business. but if I come back again I definitely will not be ordering any smoothies. The juices are cold-pressed verses fresh. not necessarily a con but you can not change it up at all. You just can order what is on the menu. And unfortunately they were out of the carrot one that I wanted, which is why i ended up ordering the smoothie. My veggie sandwich minus the bun with a side salad was good. However it was not necessarily portioned enough for the amount i paid..... I paid $15 for it. It was a little much for what i got. 3 falafels and a side salad........ I guess I wish I had understood that was what i was ordering. For some reason i thought it was goign to look more like a falafel burger. not just 3 little falafels. It was tasty though! Just a little overpriced. I would come back though if i was in the area. I just know i would not be ordering the green machine smoothie....... ever..... again.

Yelp
Honestly favorite meal of our denver trip. Perfect post hike casual food but SO well done. Quality and fresh. Pictured is the mojo chicken bowl, vegetables, and dosa.

Yelp
Rainbow curry was delivered this evening and I was shocked to see the pieces of avocado (which I had paid extra for) all rotten, brown and black and clearly beyond overripe and needing to be composted. Whether this was a careless mistake by a clueless worker or is permissible restaurant policy, it has me never want to order from this establishment again. If they carefully put rotten avocado on top of a dish to send out to a customer, there's clearly a major lack of quality control. I hope they contact me and offer to refund my money, but even if they do I wouldn't recommend this place if they allow such clear violations of food quality to occur.
google avatar

Jaden M.

Yelp
there food tasted like pine cones and a tree. it was weird and odd but the people were nice but the smoothie i ordered tasted like trees.

Yelp
I've wanted to try Zeal for a while and finally made it here to their new location in Boulder. I love their menu - loads of healthy options. I tried the vegan curry and it was fantastic! Our table shared a bowl of delicious crispy potato skins. Their cashew cheese cake is not to be missed. The chef even visited our table to chat. Give this place a visit!

Yelp
So I'm doing this hardcore 30 day cleanse with my wife and the options, at least in my mind, are super super limited. It's been a challenge coming up with recipes and things that sound good to cook. Make way for the weekend and putting the responsibility into someone else's hands! The wife ordered what I would term as a buddha bowl with cauli rice, and I went with Tom Kha (thai soup) vegan style, and the sweet potato wedges. We also ordered the kombucha and a cauli buffalo wings to share, since the appeal of something crunchy and full of flavor was really appealing (one can only survive on mush for so long). The kids ordered 2 eggs, scrambled with gouda and bacon, and the banana french toast. My stuff was good. I felt like the portion size for the cost, at least on the wedges and soup wasn't that great. The flavor was good tho. The potatoes were nicely roasted with some sort of good seasoning, sort of garam-ish, and with 3 thin lines of sauce... out of the mojo, "ranch", and harrissa, I loved the harissa. I also ordered a side of the fresno hot sauce, which was delicious. The soup was pretty tasty. There was large pieces of galangal and lemon grass to give it some cred, and the flavor was mostly on point. It needed a little more heat and perhaps some sweet potatoes to give it something more than just onions and mushrooms in terms of mouthfeel. I finished it pretty quickly and disappointedly, as it was an $8 bowl of soup. My wife's green dish was pretty good. She enjoyed the flavors and used the remainder of the fresno hot sauce that didn't make it into the soup or sweet wedges. It had a decent crunch, good mixture of vegetables, including some kale labeled as massaged (maybe kale becomes less bitter when someone gives it some love, who knows!). It needed a bit more flavor, some sort of vinegar or something to really kick it up a notch, but no complaints otherwise. The portion-size was really good. For the kids, they both enjoyed their dishes. I won't comment much on bacon and eggs, other than they looked and smelled good and tortured my wife and I. The banana nut bread french toast was phenomenal. It came with a banana that was carmelized and despite neither kid liking it, it was DELICIOUS. Once we have a little less restrictions on the things we can eat... like nuts and seeds, I am coming back directly for this dish. All in all, it's a solid 4.5 out of 5. We will come back when in the area, when we can enjoy more of the menu options.

Yelp
I was pleased with my visit to Zeal but found the atmosphere to be a bit lacking. First off, it is on the lower level of a hotel in Boulder and had a somewhat "unfinished" feel. When we walked in, it felt very casual and unorganized. Despite this, I felt that they had a good variety of tasty options. If they can work on the vibe, I think this place could really be great!
google avatar

Kristen C.

Yelp
I. am. speechless. this food was amazing. awesome vegan options but so many tasty options for meat eaters too. I would have eaten here every day while I was in town!

Artsy P.

Yelp
Amazing! The masala dosa was better than some we have had in Indian restaurants and the Tom Kha soup was rich and filling. The service was exceptional too! This is an excellent restaurant choice for gluten free vegan.

Karen M.

Yelp
Fresh, flavor, colorful, healthy and vibrant. Stunning to look at, stunning to eat. I felt like Popeye when he ate spinach and grew stronger with each bite. A range options to suit every taste. The food is well seasoned sigh great textures. And Wayde, the chef and owner is friendly, talented and helpful. Highly recommend!

Yelp
My husband and I have lived in the Denver area for almost two years now. We always search out organic food places with vegan options, so I don't know how we had missed Zeal in the past. We were in Boulder on a Sunday morning, looking for somewhere to eat for breakfast/brunch and found Zeal through our usual Googling routine. Intrigued because we hadn't seen it as an option before, we made a reservation and made our way to the restaurant. The restaurant has implemented many COVID safety precautions. My husband and I aren't particularly concerned about COVID when dining out, but for folks who are I think they would appreciate the systems the restaurant has implemented. For example: while you can take your mask off once you are seated, their table instructions indicate to put your mask back on when you are ready to order. Not only does this keep their staff safer (which is nice), but it also provides for a pretty seamless service experience. I had the Mighty Bowl and my husband had their burger. Both entrees were delicious: fresh and tasty. My husband off-handedly mentioned he was mildly allergic to lemon while we placed our order. Our server figured out (with no prompting from us) there was some lemon in a side dish or a sauce for the burger (I can't remember what) and asked if he wanted it altered. This was excellent service. I also had their lavender lemonade, which was great: not too sweet and well-balanced. They had some great looking cocktails and other alcoholic drink options that I hope to try on a future visit. Aside from what I mentioned above, our server was friendly and extremely prompt. Although we opted to sit inside because it was a snowy day, Zeal does also have a heated patio, which other guests were enjoying on that very same morning. We look forward to our next meal at Zeal and appreciate their support of organic and vegan food.

Yelp
We are here in the middle of COVID closures. We felt safe and the place is extremely clean. More exceptional was the delicious food. I had the baked chicken, my husband had the posole, and my son had the pork shoulder sandwich. All three of LOVED our dishes and hope to share this restaurant with others. Enjoy!

Yelp
Food was original and tasty. Loved it all. Service was perfect, kaelyn. Coming dow from mountain living and being a city girl at heart, I loved the vibe, and the sunset

Yelp
The food is fabulous! The wait staff is kind. There is sometimes a wait yet the food is worth it. the fresh juices are great too. I recommend the juice flight. I have taken several friends here and had a great experience.

Yelp
I don't want to hurt any business and feel bad for leaving a bad review because in the end, Yelp itself is hurting small business in this country.
google avatar

Phil C.

Yelp
Great menu if you're looking for organic, gluten-free, grass-fed meat, non-gmo, and/or vegetarian options. The burger is delicious- my girlfriend only spared me one bite so I'll be returning soon for the full experience. Really good gluten-free bun. My omelet was also delicious, especially with the house Fresno chili hot sauce.

Julia A.

Yelp
This place is so good! I eat paleo and there were a lot of options for me. They are very accommodating to dietary restrictions. I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
OMG! Best. Food. Ever! Lovely patio and/or indoor dining. I am looking forward to trying EACH menu item! Love the house Kombucha and each menu item I've tried so far. I will continue to return here many times! I highly recommend!!

Yelp
Amazing vegan/gluten free Mac n cheese, and Curry! Also loved the potato wedges with their delicious sauces

Yelp
This incarnation of Zeal is not quite as good as its previous one on West Pearl Street. Compared to the latter, this one's menu seems pared down they are not as meticulous as they once were. I was regular at the former West Pearl St. Zeal, but rarely go to this one. I don't seem to enjoy the food as much & the location is noisy (street/car noise) and not as pleasant to sit in.
google avatar

Amy F.

Yelp
Super rude staff... food late. Ignored when came in, paid $20 for mac and cheese. Expect better service.

Rachel C.

Yelp
I've never felt so ripped off. Got a breakfast bowl at the farmers market and asked for double the eggs for a bit of extra money. tipped well when i ordered but shouldn't have. With the tip cost me $13.50. they then took 25 minutes even though there were only two people ahead of me in line to cook the food and present me with the smallest portion I've seen. This should be $5. Food was fine but nothing special at all. Go anywhere else but here!

Yelp
What a great lunch we had today at Zeal. We haven't been there since they moved. Really good. Both of our dishes were really well done. I would definitely recommending Zeal for both vegetarians and non alike. We will be back soon!

Samantha M.

Yelp
First time eating from Zeal and it was to go- I was very pleasantly surprised! I'm definitely ordering from here again, I had the avocado quinoa salad and the vegan Mac- both awesome! Every element of the salad was perfectly seasoned and I love the pickled radish.
