There are plenty of places in New Orleans where one can get "a" pizza; but pizza of the level of quality that such a food city demands is not in high supply. This place offers a NY-ish style with large slices for sale, as well as whole pie. I did not uncover this detail in my research, but apparently they have a 2-4 PM happy hour with a robust 40% discount, at least on slices, salads and apps. Having walked in at 2:05, I felt very good about this, and got a substantial salad, a couple of large slices, and some side items for $12 plus tip.
The crust is what really sets the flavor apart. One walks by bags of high-gluten, high-quality flour on the way to the restrooms in the back (which are shared with the neighboring ice creamery). A slightly sour, slightly charred creation, the crust is flavorful as well as floppy. I probably overdid it in getting a sachet of pickled jalapeños as well as the Calabrian chili emulsion. As ordering by the slice limits one's topping options, I was quite happy with the jalapeños; they added a sharp flavor contrast without ruining the fundamentals. The chili emulsion was a nice flavor, but more than I needed for the crusts of two slices; maybe save those dippers for when you order a whole pie. Ordering a Brussels sprout salad was a wise decision; my shaved sprouts contrasted well with the apples and cheese and were worthy of skipping out on another slice (or a bowl of ice cream).
It's a bit of a hike to get to Pizza Delicious, so us Uptown folks can now get a quality pie without having to travel, which is a welcome development.
