The Best Restaurants and Bars in Detroit’s Eastern Market | Eater Detroit

"For a quick, unpretentious diner-style breakfast or a dog, Zeff’s does the trick. The restaurant offers the expected Coney Island fare with a mixture of sauce-slathered hot dogs, sandwiches, gyros, and omelets." - Serena Maria Daniels

Google
the quality of the hotdog and the pastrami meat was amazing. It definitely could’ve benefited from seasoning, but was a seven out of 10 for me. Everyone in the restaurant was polite, and it was a good atmosphere with the exception of my waitress who found herself very concerned with me tipping the busier advising me she is the waitress as if I did not leave her a tip too.

Google
Zeff’s is a respectable Coney Island. Most of our meals on a Sunday Brunch on Lions game day were on point. Coneys always good. Bacon pitas were fair. Chicken Swarma was not as tasty as preferred. Stick with the classics is our opinion. Will likely go again as it is near Sunday Church.

Google
Sadly the food was just “meh” and the service forgetful (had to ask 3 times nicely to get orange juice). The pastrami sandwich was lacking both oomph and cheese; the scrambled egg was a bit too hard, and the hash browns weren’t very brown. Maybe an off day. Oh and they charge extra $1 after 11am for breakfast. Why? It’s a friggin’ deli.

Google
Good food and service! Always a quick place to stop in if you're hungry and don't have time to wait.

Google
Burger is just perfect. I got mine dry, no ketchup, mustard, or mayonaise. It's just so clean here, and I love the salads and the homemade soups.

Google
Fantastic little joint serving up all the diner classics. I came specifically for their coney dog but the other stuff we got was all tasty, quickly prepared and served hot. We didn't come for breakfast but by the looks of the orders we saw cooking up, it's one of their big sellers. It's a small place so could be a wait for a table, so be prepared. Worth a visit!

Google
Food was not that great. I had a ceasar salad. Croutons were stale and parmesan cheese melted into my salad the grilled chicken was too salty. The chicken should be put on the side so it doesnt melt the cheese . Their ceasar dressing was good. The romaine was fresh. The cashier was nice. Maybe it was the salad but I didnt enjoy it. I'll be back maybe try something else because of the friendly service I recieved.

Google
This is home. The heart of the Eastern Market since I was a little girl. This place and Mike's are pillars for Detroit classics. Service is always A1. My mom always gets their breakfast which they give ginormous portions and I either get a corned beef sandwich or a coney and chili cheese fries. They dont miss!

Yelp
Great. Friendly service. Tasty omelet. Lots of options for breakfast. I need to go back. I saw the chili on the way out & it looks insane!

Yelp
Absolutely a must stop. Classic Coney Diner. Clean. Friendly and certainly a fun staff. Great food and especially fresh.

Yelp
Great service and excellent food in a diner environment. A great Sunday morning breakfast spot

Yelp
Amazing service and with only one cook we were extremely impressed with how fast our food came out! Everything was perfect best crispy hash browns and pancakes super friendly waitress, clean but total dive diner;) Always impressed with this city!

Yelp
No wait (though packed to the gills) at around 9 am on a Sunday The staff were super friendly and seemed very used to the crowd - didn't even skip a beat! My toddler LOVED the scrambled eggs. Omelets were good and my husband raved about the gyro meat in his. We parked in one of the market lots with no issue as well.

Yelp
Visited during a recent trip to Michigan to treat my wife to a Coney Dog and fries and Zeff's across town Eastern Market in Detroit didn't disappoint. The fries didn't last long enough to take a picture lol.

Yelp
My love & I went here on tigers opening day 2023. We were tailgating downtown Detroit. I ordered the zeffs chicken sub and he had the corn beef w/ 1 side of fries. We both had waters. Which I asked the server to put in a togo cup and she didn't do so... i then requested togo water before we left. We sat at the bar-top. The food was not seasoned at all to us. I even asked for cajun or seasoning salt and the lady said they dont have that here. She pointed at the salt, pepper and ketchup. Lol. I asked for 2 cornbeef eggrolls to go. The waitress forgot to put them in. Then when we went to eat them, it barley had any cheese in them. It was shaped like an empty square. Smh, i likely wont be back.

Yelp
I've been a patron of Zeff's for over 30 years for the same food my grandfather and father ate while working at the Eastern Market, especially on the weekends; with an incredibly friendly staff and freshly made food. Their breakfast and lunches are delish, with huge portions too. Their coffee is made fresh and the staff always smiles and spends a few extra moments chatting with customers. Booths and tables are comfortable and it's never too loud and you seldom wait longer than 3 minutes for a table. Their counter gives you a first glance at the cooking area which is also always clean! A true gem of the city and especially Eastern Market. We love Zeffs!

Yelp
First the service here is excellent. It's a seat yourself place. Its busy so they might not get to you right away but once they do they are spot on. A quick food rundown; corned beef omelette was stuffed full of corned beef, Any veggie in or on your dish is fresh, and even the lettuce is super green and leafy no kidding! My wifes ham sanwich was great, my coney dog was perfect, their clam chowder is homemade and delish. I looooooved this place!
google avatar

Kris G.

Yelp
Out flippin standing! True diner experience. Small and cozy place. We went for breakfast. It wasn't very busy. It's seat yourself. Staff were attentive and friendly. We had standard breakfast fare but it was delicious and everything cooked perfectly. Coffee was really good. Highly recommend! It's a gem.

Yelp
Went to the market early today and decided to finally try zeffs. Normally I go to farmer franks or get peoples pierogi. Very happy with the country skillet. It filled the skillet up so much it was hard to eat right out of it! Food came out quickly and was very hot! I'll be back for sure!!

Grov T.

Yelp
One of our favs to visit or to order for pickup. If you're close, a delivery would be great as well. Food is always amazing. The service always feels like the family of a good friend invited you to some home cooking...and it's all delicious. Loyal since 2020

Yelp
On a recent visit to Eastern Market, my four-year-old daughter was hungry. We needed something fast so we found ourselves just off the actual market at Zeff's Coney Island Restaurant. It's a dive in the best way. We ordered a hot dog to go and it was ready within minutes. Not only did my daughter love her hot dog, I did too! It was tasty, cheap and quick!
google avatar

Kate H.

Yelp
Friendly staff, excellent service. We had the coney dogs and onion rings. Tasty and fresh. Perfect lunch. Thanks so much.

Mike W.

Yelp
We tried Zeff's for the first time today. It was awesome!! The coney dogs were delicious as were the perfectly cooked fries and onion rings. We also decided on a half pita sandwich over a whole and the portion was huge and taste so incredible! The restaurant was really clean, the service was great...so friendly and attentive. You could even tell the staff enjoyed working together. So refreshing to see. We'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Lynn S.

Yelp
Always a great lunch. Count on tender corned beef, crispy fries and service with a smile. Thank you
google avatar

Susan M.

Yelp
Food is outstanding! Great quality and taste. The service is good too. It's a great spot.

Maddie W.

Yelp
My most favorite place to eat. The chicken is the most flavorful tender chicken i've ever had. Sometimes it can be pricey, but we all usually have left overs and it is worth it. It's always the same couple waitresses and they are great and make you feel welcome and remember us always. It is a good vibe and usually not too busy and they are fast. my favorite place again.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm a lifelong Michigan resident, and this is the best Coney Island (for breakfast) I've ever been to in my life. Our food was out only six minutes after ordering despite the place being full of customers. The omelettes were packed with fillings and the French toast was delicious. Everything was super clean and our waitress was very attentive. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
I have lived in suburban Detroit for over 20 years and just discovered Zeff's, literally by driving by it while at Eastern Market. The place was clean and comfy, the staff was extremely friendly and patient, the prices were completely reasonable, and the food...I had probably the best homemade breakfast I've had since I was a youngster at Grandma's house. You have to try this place. I'm coming back every back time I'm downtown now.
google avatar

Keith D.

Yelp
Very decent Coney Island. Nothing to shout and brag about BUT the staff is pretty awesome. They are extremely friendly and are very good listening to my quirky jokes. That's gotta be worth something. They are pretty pricey for a Coney but given the location I'm sure that's why they are more expensive than the others.
google avatar

Rhonda S.

Yelp
After shopping at Eastern Market we were in the mood for an omelette. Yelp led us to Zeff's. We both ordered the House Omelette with hash browns. The omelette came quickly and was perfectly cooked. Their hash browns were fresh (not the reheated frozen stuff). Our wait staff was friendly and efficient.
google avatar

Zhao C.

Yelp
Great place for classic diner food and it's walkable from the Eastern Market! It also appears to be a family-run business so always happy to support such businesses. The service was quick and the overall taste exceeded my expectations for diner food. The inside was relatively clean and there was a lot of booth seating in addition to regular tables for bigger groups. Definitely check this place out for your next diner food experience, especially after touring the Eastern Market.
google avatar

Sandra G.

Yelp
I never have written a bad review simply because I don't want anyone's business to be affected by me and I understand inflation is a thing right now, but under no circumstances should I be paying $44 for two skillets and a breakfast sandwich at a coney.
google avatar

Al P.

Yelp
Yeah baby got the BIGGY a famous sandwich on Onion roll packed with Corned Beef, Pastrami, Slaw n Sauerkraut. One of the very best Sandwiches in Detroit beware it's huge plenty to share. Great Bowl of Chili Special with Cheese n diced Onion on Top and a Chicken topped Salad absolutely Wonderful. Ordered the Corned Beef Egg Roll waitress warned me not that big, astonished when it was maybe 2 oz of Meat for 5 fifty owner should be ashamed to rip off his customers. One waitress say it's supposed to be filled with 6 n half oz NOT she also said many compliments in the last week. YES biggest rip off in Eastern Market. I asked for to take it off the bill Not. You just lost a customer like forever. SHAME ON YOU take it off the menu . #zeffs #rippedoff #cornedbeef #easternmarket #downriverfriendseat #motorcitymunchers
google avatar

Kalin S.

Yelp
Love this place. Has the best breakfast around. Everything's cooked perfect. Eggs are good. Potatoes are perfect. And the breakfast meat is the highest quality I've had anywhere. It's a little pricey for being Coney Island food. But in my opinion, if you love a meat and potatoes kind of breakfast, you can't get much better than this. They have pretty good coneys too. On par with American and Lafayette. So yeah give them a try when you're near eastern market. Zeff's is the bomb.
google avatar

Dustin M.

Yelp
Food is nothing spectacular , average lots of far better coney islands in the Detroit metro area, the worst thing is they are extremely overpriced but you are paying for eastern market, I won't return.
google avatar

Ben K.

Yelp
I must say my coworkers and I were disappointed at the order placed at Zeff's. Where do I begin? The Western Omelette, the vegetables were burned or cooked on a dirty grill!! The Turkey Sausage and Cheese Omelette, sausage tasted old. The scrambled eggs in the Slam were cooked until they were brown. How do you burn scrambled eggs??? The Wing Dings in both orders were cooked to the point they were not edible. The blueberry pancakes and eggs over hard were the only items that were decent. A call was placed regarding our dissatisfaction with the order. Zeff's response, "Well.... What do you want us to do about?" Let's start with some customer service that offered a resolution and somewhere down the line some new cooks!!! I used to frequent Zeff's years ago but I can definitely say I won't be back!!
google avatar

Rudy B.

Yelp
A traditional grease joint that hits all the right spots. It's close for the Eastern Market, small and intimate, service real-deal bfast at fantastic prices (the portions are enough for two), and it looks like it's family run. I had the classic Zeff coney dog. Lots of chili which was delicious. The mustard added the right amount of flavor. Never had mustard with chili, but on this hot dog, it was solid. A "3.99% service fee" for using a credit card was the only blemish. Seriously? In 2018 we're being charged a fee for using a cc in a restaurant? So be it. That was at least one star, if not one and a half star deduction.
google avatar

Marian B.

Yelp
A small joint near the eastern market where you can get a Coney Island for cheap. My dad got the pastrami sandwich and mom got the salmon salad. The price definitely ranges by what you get. The Coney Island was around $4 while the salmon salad was around $16. Huge price gaps between our orders. They give us a big salmon filet and the seasoning was spicy, but I feel like the salad itself could've been better given then price. The salad kind of looked sad. The Coney Island was great though, I can't compare to anywhere else because this was my first time trying hotdogs in the Midwest. The fries were crispy which I liked. It's a pretty tight diner with limited capacity even without the social distancing. It's very difficult to distance yourselves in this snug diner so I would suggest ordering takeout. This would be a good quick takeout meal to have for lunch or for a stay in weekend.

Yelp
Ordered a loose burger and fries, first bite and my tongue started to burn.Found hot pepper flakes in the ground beef struggled to eat it,not wanting to complain. So,when the waitress came over asked if there was hot pepper flakes in it,she didn't know but got another female to come to our table, she says they always put that in the loose burger!!!I have never had a loose burger with hot pepper flakes, ever!!! My husband order a chicken wrap, made with dried out little cubes of chicken, and too pricey!!! The must have charged for our glasses of water too!!! Will not recommend this place to anyone!!!
google avatar

Akira D.

Yelp
Underwhelming. I didn't like it. But hey maybe you will. The hot dog wasn't on par with like Nathan's or National, or so it seemed. Yes it was an all beef frank in their signature coney that we ate. We liked the dog, yet the chili left us wondering why it wasn't better. This is Detroit! Home of the coney dog! It should have been epic but instead our quest to find alternatives to other famous Coney Island hot dog restaurants and stands has been an epic fail. But since I am throwing out brand names for ingredients, I feel that I should mention Koegels Vienna's brand of hot dogs from Flint. Maybe I am just more partial to a flint coney vs. a Detroit coney. I don't know. I do like all those that I have mentioned...National...Koegels, etc. Are you questioning my review? Wondering what basis I have for it? Well I can tell you that I have eaten coney dogs in many places that have included: Canada, the USA, Great Britain and probably once in Mexico. I have been a photographer for over 20 years, a photojournalist and foodie. See some of my other reviews and pick your favorites!

Yelp
All in all out of all the Coneys in Detroit this has to be my favorite because of 3 main reasons and one preference. 1.They have Super Speedy Service 2.The Waitresses are always friendly 3.The Quality of the food Preference: They are right by the Eastern Market ! (Shop and Dine) I am always on the go and the food comes to you faster than any place I have been to. The waitresses are friendly and the cooks are upbeat preparing your food with Godspeed. Some of my favorites include The Super Hippy Hash, The #1 Breakfast Special and A Greek salad. I like that they serve breakfast all day and the fact it looks pleasing to the eye inside is also a plus. The ketchup is not watered down unlike some other coneys and they carry non generic brands. It is all top of the line brands here. Cleanliness is outstanding. This is definitely not a hole in the wall Coney.

Yelp
I was at this establishment on November 25th. My sister and I wanted to grab a bite after being at the hospital for our mom. And had the worst experience. ever. The waitress and the cashier were rule. I was charge $30.00 for a corn beef and Pastrami sandwich with no cheese or dressing and order of French fries coffee and pop. That I shared with my sister When I called back and ask why Was I charged so much the cashier was very rule when I told the charge did not add up from the on line menu. She said that menu is old Trying to justify the charge . I will never go back and tell other about the poor service

Yelp
We went to Zeffs on a Saturday morning and we received Service as soon as we walked in. The server came and took our order and brought coffee and we had our food within about 10 minutes. The food was hot and delicious and fresh. The server was attentive and courteous.
google avatar

Gloria J.

Yelp
The staff are friendly. The waitresses are very attentive. The food is very good. We had French Toast, Corned Beef Hash, grits, eggs, bacon and sausage. Travelers delight. A nice stop for Sunday Breakfast. I will make sure to visit again.
google avatar

Karen H.

Yelp
Yum! Always a reliable go-to with good food, friendly staff, fast service and inexpensive options.
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
I ordered a corned beef sandwich and it was dry with a little white cheese. French fries were were incredibly dry and tasted like school paper. I ordered a Diet Coke. No refill, the waitress just ignored me. Seriously, the corned beef sandwich lacked in any taste and the bread was as bland as they come. Lunch cost me 16$ plus a $2 tip for horrible service. After eating there and spending $18 for lunch, I felt totally ripped ifff! Do not go there! Food is tasteless! Expensive for eastern market. Service is atrocious.
google avatar

Mark N.

Yelp
If you're in a hurry and/or on a budget, there's no better restaurant in Eastern Market. Zeff's doesn't have the long wait times like at Supino's and Russell Street Deli, plus you can get a full meal for less than $10. I got the "South of the Border Fries", a dinner plate full of chili cheese fries (with onions and extra beef) for only $5. That alone was enough to satisfy my big appetite. It looks like Zeff's was remodeled not long ago and it's much cleaner than the average greasy spoon. The staff are extremely friendly and act like they've known you for your years, even if it's your first time.
google avatar

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
We had a scrumptious lunch here after perusing the Eastern Market. They serve several breakfast items all day, which is always a plus in my mind and that's exactly what I ordered. I had the super hippy hash, which consisted of a bunch of sautéed veggies in a hash and topped with feta cheese. It was so good!!! The flavors were bright and the feta was a perfect compliment. My hubby had a reuban-like sandwich, except instead of sauerkraut, it was served with coleslaw. That was also really, really good. The sandwich was finished on a grill perfectly and the coleslaw had a fresh bite to it. I want to go back! This is in the Eastern Market area, so parking can be tricky. If going on a weekend, I suggest parking in the outskirts lots designated for Eastern Market overflow. That way you don't have to deal with all the foot traffic or have to *try* to find a parking spot!
google avatar

D. M.

Yelp
Crowded. Limited seating. Brusque service. The food is quite delicious. Serving sizes are huge. I came out of here feeling fat and happy. I had lunch, but plenty of people were still ordering breakfast, and those platters looked great, too.
google avatar

Lynn S.

Yelp
For a Coney Island in the city of Detroit I'll give this place a 2 and a half on food alone. Visited on 3/19/2016 around noon and it's very crowded. After ordering then going to the restroom to wash my hands my food was already on my table. Western omelette w/ hash browns and a chicken pita with fries. The food was just okay. Wasn't the best Coney I ever had nor the worst. They have a typical Coney menu. I'll return if I'm in the area though. Seating can be tight, place is clean, service is speedy.
google avatar

Zoe B.

Yelp
Diner done right in Eastern Market. Zeff's Coney Island is a great stop for classic diner food. The space is pretty tight, but once your seated you will find yourself right at home! The service is quick with a nice selection of breakfast options. I personally recommend the Veggie Hash (covered in feta cheese of course). Quick notes: -They tend to be open when other restaurants are closed (New Years Day). -It's probably not the best place for a large group. I came here with a party of six and we had to take seats at the counter in order to sit together.
google avatar

Sean M.

Yelp
Chances Of Going Back: 5/5 Would Suggest To Others? Yes What I Ordered: Veggie Omelet: 4/5 Murf's Tip: Try To Avoid On Typical Business Days. (+) - Fresh Food - Good Hashbrowns (-) - Small(er) Venue I have had Zeff's before, but this was my first time dinning in. The food was good as usual, but I can now say (first hand), the service is quick. I will be going back to Zeff's for sure.
google avatar

Robin K.

Yelp
This place is amazing. I had the super hippie hash and it was a great healthy option that tastes soooo bad for you. I will order it every time. Friends of mine ordered corn beef omelettes and biscuits/gravy and loved their meals.

Jim V.

Yelp
We ate here after eating at a place called Zef's in mid-town and, hit the brakes, different place altogether. This place is the OG Zeff's with no association to the posers on Woodward (now closed). My usual diner fare is corned beef hash and eggs and Zeff's killed it! Great atmosphere and service. Go!
google avatar

Lynn H.

Yelp
We were here for breakfast before rainy flower day today. First time visit because we've never been here early enough before today to not wait in line (we're not very patient - especially when hungry - so we hardly ever wait in line to eat). They serve basted eggs, which is great since I just joined weight watchers, so fried eggs were out. Hubby got a 3 egg omelet and said it was fantastic (flat kind, not fluffy kind - personally, I prefer fluffy). The waitress was friendly, and the atmosphere is classic Coney.
google avatar

Cristina B.

Yelp
The perks of having someone in your life that loves spontaneous adventures in downtown Detroit is that you end up at random restaurants at random times during the day. Case in point: Zeff's on a muggy Memorial Day morning. Zeff's wasn't our first choice of the day but because so many places were closed downtown due to the holiday (totally acceptable!), my boyfriend and I dined here for breakfast. The place was packed even though nothing was happening in Eastern Market (I can only imagine how chaotic it is on a busy Saturday!) but the waitress was prompt and you could tell she was trained well in her job! Nothing I love more than fast service! Breakfast was great and cheap! You can't screw up pancakes and bacon but this really hit the spot. Eggs were great as well! Can't wait to try something else next time I'm in the neighborhood. You can tell this is a place that the crowd frequents often. Everyone treats you like you're at home.

Yelp
I had a spinach and feta omelet....This is a tricky choice, as it can either be really good and done nicely, or it can be complete crap.... By this I mean, I've had omelets with feta and there has been waaaay too much feta that it was overkill, and something about cooked spinach...if it's not done right it can feel odd in your mouth and leave a funky after taste. But not with ZEFF's!! My Omelete was very appetizing. It had the perfect amount of feta, that it was nice and a bit melty, and the spinach was done well, where the color was still vibrant and the flavors just interfused so well that I had that omelet down in just a few bites! Nice hash browns/potatoes and some good rye bread and I was off to the market to shop by booty off! I'd go back again for sure :-)
