The Most Interesting Passover Snacks in Chicago - Eater Chicago

"Flourless chocolate cakes abound at Passover. But for a change of pace, try the orange raspberry layer cake, made with gebrochts, or matzo that has been soaked in liquid, from Zelda’s Catering in Skokie, which is also certified kosher by the Chicago Rabbinical Council. And yes, there are also two kinds of chocolate cake." - aimee.levitt

What a fantastic team to work with! Taylor and Melissa and their whole team are superstars. The food was fantastic, the set up was so lovely and they took care of everything! Thank you for making our weekend perfect!

Google
Zelda's Catering made the wedding menu, dinner, dessert, and cake of our dreams! Our guests were raving about the food at our wedding for weeks afterwards, and we loved it, too. Linda helped us design a menu that matched our vision and budget, and was extremely communicative throughout the whole process. The desserts tasted just like dairy desserts even with our meat menu (and were even better!). Excellent service and 11/10 food! Couldn't recommend more -

Google
Zelda's is a reliable, organized, and professional caterer. We have used their food for small gatherings and 500-person dinners. Every time, Zelda's provides delicious food and incredible service. I highly recommend them to cater your next event!

Google
Zelda's did an outstanding job catering our wedding weekend events. They were extremely attentive and professional. Most importantly, the food was excellent!!!

Google
Kathy Ramos Kurland and Zelda's not only catered my 70th birthday party but also helped me get it planned in about 6 weeks! They were wonderful to work with (full disclosure - I've worked with Kathy before and she's always helpful and wonderful). Food was delicious and presented lovingly. Even those who were not used to Kosher food commented on how good it was. Special shout out to the BBQ brisket sliders. The Party was held in the Lounge at the Wellsley, a venue suggested to me by Zelda's and it was the venue of my dreams. Thanks to the entire Zelda's team and especially Kathy. Can't wait for another excuse to use them!

I Love this place! When you walk in you feel like you're in an elegant and high quality food palace. Ooh, just talking about the place makes my mouth water. First and most they are a catering company but have become a takeout place as well. They are the number one place to go for all your parties and large events needs! Thank you zelda's for making my takeout experience so delicious!

Google
Zelda's catering is the best choice we could have made for our daughters Bat Mitzvah. The appetizers, main dishes and desserts were outstanding! Zelda's staff were just amazing. So friendly, helpful and they helped make our event memorable. We would recommend Zelda's to everyone. Excellent communication and coordination with other vendors. Five stars!

Mazal tov on your 20th anniversary! Your family is so friendly and so professional. The tour of the facility was so well done. And the food - mouthwatering! Especially those lamb chops. Bhatzlacha raba.

Yelp
Zelda's has become our go-to caterer due to their delicious, abundant, and innovative Kosher food; world-class service from managers to wait staff; beautiful presentation and attention to detail; and adaptability for events from small receptions to galas. Their staff has worked with our team to advise and guide multiple events every year, always helping us find the right menu for every occasion. They're so reliable, which is critical to our peace-of-mind on so many chaotic event days! We always know Zelda's will be on time and fully prepared with our yummy, gorgeous vittles. Thank you, Zelda's!

Yelp
Zelda's was recommended to us by the venue we chose for our daughter's bat mitzvah. Merry Jean and her team were such a pleasure to work with. From planning the menu to incorporating special items from our family's mixed Asian heritage, as well as ensuring special dietary restrictions were accounted for, everything was so easy. Merry Jean was very receptive to menu requests and changes, and checked back with me several times to make sure the menu was varied enough. Several guests at the bat mitzvah commented on how good the food was! They worked with our venue's staff to minimize any redundant costs, but provided more than ample amounts of food. We will be using them again when it's time for our son's bar mitzvah in a few years!!

Yelp
Zelda's is the best! Last week, they created a beautiful, tasty, and classy dessert reception for our nonprofit organization. They are lovely to work with and never disappoint!

Shelley S.

Yelp
Zelda's catered two events last weekend for my family. They did an extraordinary job on every level... fabulous food and exceptional service staff. Katy, our liaison was so professional and on top of everything. The support staff was superb, too. Bravo!

Morgan F.

Yelp
Zelda's Catering was the best choice for our event. Finding delicious kosher food can be challenging. Zelda's appetizers, main dishes and desserts were outstanding! The staff was friendly and attentive. Katy did an amazing job communicating and coordinating with the other vendors as well. Would definitely recommend Zelda's to everyone. Five stars!

Yelp
I am so thrilled this fabulous caterer is now selling individual and family meals. We've ordered a few times and everything has been great. It's very clean and they are taking all precautions. Pickup is so easy, too. Tip -like them on Facebook to see their weekly specials. Last week was chicken and waffles! Generous portions and lots of sauces, too. We ordered 4 meals and had leftovers!!! It's a little pricier because of being kosher, but i think it is definitely worth it. And to be honest, the pricing is relative to all other kosher restaurants.

Marsha G.

Yelp
Heidi and Linda, I wanted to take the time to let you know how thrilled we were with the quality, presentation, and quantity of our Shabbat meal last weekend. The matzo ball soup was as good as my own and that's pretty darn good! The vegetarians raved about the minestrone as well. Your couscous with the dried fruit was absolutely delicious, the chicken schnitzel was more than plentiful and the dessert options were "inhaled" by our guests. THANK YOU AGAIN! MCG

Yelp
Zelda was recommended as a preferred catering for a wedding venue Stan Mansion. I reached out to Zelda to understand the total venue's pricing if I selected Zelda for catering. From the caters recommended by the venue, Zelda offered the best selection of many options for guests. Also, the proposal they put together for me was well done, and I was impressed by their presentation. My wedding is not until 2024, but my interaction with them has been very positive. I recommend this catering company.

Yelp
We catered in a salmon dinner with potatoes, green beans, and latkes for Chanukah. Everything was really tasty when reheated and was made with excellent flavors and mostly generous portions. One thing to note is where Zelda's pointed out this is enough for 4 people, the portions, aside from the main dish, all side dishes were not enough for 4, only 2. We would definitely order from Zelda's in the future and recommend it to others as well.

Yelp
I'd add pictures of my brisket sandwich... but it didn't last long once I got back to my house and began to eat - that's how good the brisket smelled the whole way home and tasted incredible as soon as I got back to the house! The Wednesday Brisket Sandwich on a pretzel roll was exactly what I needed in my life yesterday. This sandwich was absolutely incredible from the bun to the bbq sauce to the brisket itself this was a fantastic experience. I've had the pleasure of having some of Zelda's Catering at an event in the past and when I saw the Facebook post for weekly meals I had to give it a go - now it seems that I have a new spot for a Wednesday special. The service was extremely prompt and was greeted by Ben who was incredible. I will definitely be coming back soon and will be looking to the Zelda's team for some catering events in the coming weeks! It also looked like Zelda's was doing classes online - something that I look forward to checking out with my team! Give them a go for your carry out needs or for catering for your next gathering and you won't be disappointed!

Nicole F.

Yelp
I would not choose them in the future to cater a large event. They did not listen to what I had requested about changing food options to accommodate food allergies, the food was cold when served to my guests and when mentioned they didn't take responsibility.

Yelp
Zelda's is a little dessert place in Skokie that has been around for quite some time, offering certified kosher pareve snack foods and desserts. Cakes, caramel corn, biscotti, and cookies are of a variety here. The hubs and I stopped by to check this place out, and we were able to purchase and sample a few things: a chocolate and sprinkle-covered pretzel stick, a chewy walnut and raisin bar, some chocolate truffles, and a petit four. I was a little disappointed that most were of dark chocolate rather than milk chocolate, but I did appreciate that their chocolates were less sweet and not too sugary. Service was a little MIA, but you are more than welcome to peruse the place and its selections. +certified kosher pareve desserts +more dark chocolate-oriented +free parking!

Yelp
If I could give Zelda's six stars I would. Due to Covid we had to modify our plans for our daughters wedding, we had 12 people in our backyard. Kathy was our phenomenal coordinator she had an unbelievable talent to think of every little detail. All of our guests raved about the great taste as well as the gorgeous presentation. Kathy also went above and beyond, by shipping overnight ,the same meals we enjoyed in our backyard to our daughter and her family who (due to Covid risk) was quarantined in California Thanks, Brent Weiss

Yelp
I feel like I've been through multiple incarnations of Zelda's, and while I'll continue to support them (they're super nice), they've never done anything as well as their original banana bread. Last night we ordered take out, and as before, I found it to be expensive for the amount of food you get. Additionally, most things are not as tasty as I'd hoped. We started with small portion of hot and sour soup which had an interesting flavor unlike traditional H & S soup, and definitely not "hot" or spicy. We followed that up with Mongolian beef which was relatively bland, and, the General Tso's chicken which was more highly flavored. We were most looking forward to the dessert of banana filled wonton or potsticker which had so little banana in it that it was a shanda. Oy, such a great concept that was just a disappointment. I have to give them credit for the efforts they're making during this highly unusual pandemic as well as for our food being ready when they said it would be, packed nicely, and ease of pick up.

Yelp
Zelda's catered the cocktail hour for my microwedding last week, and their food was just incredible. The menu options were creative and fresh, and all of the hor d'oeuvres looked lovely and tasted even better. Guests loved every single option, with the ahi sliders as the runaway hit of the evening! I worked with Sean throughout the whole process, and he was incredibly warm and helpful from start to finish. Highly recommend.

Yelp
They did my wedding and I was iffy b4 as I dont know much about Zeldas being from out of town. This was the best food I ever ate at a wedding. From the appetizers to the 3 main courses to the sorbet. Absolutely incredible. Can't recommend more highly. Absolutely awsome experience

Yelp
This is the second time we ordered Shabbat dinner from Zeldas, and it was delicious. The first time was pickup, the second was delivery. Both times prompt and efficient. The website was easy to use, delivery was right when we wanted it, the instructions for preparation (basically heating the food) were simple and the food was absolutely spectacular, from the soup to the dessert. We served family members from the smallest (age 7) to the oldest (age 92), and all loved it. I'd like to order it every week for Shabbat. Very highly recommended.

Yelp
This is the place for chocolate lovers who are lactose intolerant. I have tasted the best dairy free handmade chocolates/truffles at Zelda's sweet Shoppe. You will not be able to tell the difference and wouldn't not find anything better. A Kosher confectionery that makes handmade truffles, cookies, chocolate covered dried fruits and carries a variety of nuts and such as well. All her chocolate and baked items are made within the premises will meet and exceed all your sweet tooth requirements. A cute little shop in the middle of skokie, there's plenty of street parking here. I make a 20 minute drive here at least twice a month and the truffles are worth every moment of it. Enjoy! www.zeldas.net for more info and order on line.

Yelp
Needed kosher dessert for a bridal shower. Ordered the cupcakes. They were cute and "okay" -- not out of this world. I understand my palate is probably more experienced and sophisticated than someone who only experiences "kosher". Our guests were happy and that's what was important. I would not go out of my way.

Yelp
Although this place is not easily accessible through the bus system, if you have a way to get there its totally worth it. On a warm Friday afternoon a couple of weeks ago, the girlfriend and I did a bit of schlepping around Skokie. The bus system's closest stop was about 1.5 miles away, and we couldn't even catch that bus. In total we made a couple of stops but walked about 4 miles around Skokie. We entered the store and I was definitely impressed. Its so hard to find a great kosher snack place by where I am from, so to see the selection in this place I was blown away. We tried all sorts of stuff, I just couldn't help myself. Everything just looked so good, we had to try a little bit of everything. We had a couple of things from the pareve case, a few things from the dairy. I got some pareve oatmeal cookies, hamantoshen, and a giant Purim cookie. I am sure there is more than I am forgetting about too. The prices were very reasonable and most of the stuff was dated with a nice expiration date. Most things were good for 2 weeks, which is nice for fresh products, its not normally that long. I am not sure if it was worth the 4 miles walking, but I definitely plan on ordering from their website in the future.

Yelp
This Kosher bakery is adorable! Zelda's whips up chocolates, cookie cakes, cookie bouquets and lots of other treats. Their decorated cookies are really exquisite, and come in many shapes and designs. We bought bride and groom decorated cookies for an anniversary, and I bought a tie-dye t-shirt cookie just cuz it was cute looking (and I have been called a hippie in my day, or "mother nature's bitch," but, I digress...) Some of their goodies are sold at the Jewel on Howard. I have purchased their cupcakes a couple times and they are so adorable and delish, I can hardly believe they are parve (non-dairy). If you want to impress an observant Jew, a lactose-intolerator, or any appreciator of fine baked goods, Zelda's is the place to be.
google avatar

Asaf O.

Yelp
I am either shrinking or Zelda is making me really fat LOL. I don't go often because I have no self discipline. I want "one of everything". My sister goes a lot because she says the shop is "cute and cozy". She gets designed cookies for my little brother there and those are about the only cookies he will eat. Parking can be a pain but if you live within walking or biking distance, its not a problem at all.

Judy S.

Yelp
My family is visiting from our of town, and I was looking for options to lessen the cooking load. We ordered their fried chicken dinner special. Everyone loved it. The fried chicken came in a cute little KFC-style bucket, the potato salad was delicious. It was a hit, and allowed me to get out of the kitchen and spend more time with my family.

Yelp
So, I really, really love ordering online for Zelda's, so imagine my excitement when we had the chance to actually GO to Zelda's in Skokie! We schlepped, quite a ways, to get here, so I was kind of disappointed when we actually got to the store. The selection at the store pales, massively, in comparison to the online selection. They didn't have a lot of the Purim cookies they have online (I wanted the hamantaschen cookie!), and the store was pretty small for what I'd expected. But it was bright, clean and the staff was definitely friendly. The food, of course, is delicious. The cookies are always fresh, no matter when you eat them, and the hamantaschen was outstanding. I had a little coconut truffle, and that was outstanding. Was it worth the schlep? Not really. I'll keep ordering online and enjoying the confections, though!

Yelp
I did not have a good experience with Zelda's. It started off bad when I walked into the store and waited LITERALLY 10 minutes until one of the girls comes out and doesn't say "I'm sorry you were kept waiting" or anything kind - she just stared at me. I ordered cupcakes for my brother in law's birthday - and they were sitting out on the counter when I got there (and who knows how long before) and STALE! The vanilla frosting tasted like it had gone bad. It was embarrassing to say I got cupcakes from a bakery and they are hard and taste bad. And then I wanted to buy a cookie that said Happy Birthday, but the employee told me it had expired!! So your cupcakes are stale and you're displaying expired products??? Will not go again.
google avatar

Brad N.

Yelp
Wow. Delicious treats and great service. What else do you need? Now they have savory too and cater. I've been to a few events with the Zelda's Kosher Gourmet logo (which I did confirm is the same company as Zelda's Sweets) and I blame my big belly on them! My wife says it has to do with my eating habits, but nope, all these guys! If you get a chance, order their chicken fried rice from their "to go" menu. In fact I think I might just get some right now...

Yelp
Zelda's Catering wasn't just our vendor for our daughter's wedding at the Palmer House last summer. Linda Neiman and her staff were our partners. They worked with us tirelessly to fine tune a menu that respected our budget, met various dietary needs and pleased our serious "foodies." The food looked beautiful and tasted even better. Just writing this, I wish I could go back for seconds.

Bonnie B.

Yelp
Linda,Taylor and all the staff were simply amazing at making our event spectacular. Their food, presentation and professionalism were outstanding in every way. They listen to all my ideas and created a memorable event that guests are still raving about.

Julie N.

Yelp
I've worked with Linda, the owner of Zelda's (granddaughter of the namesake) now, in connection with two recent events. The food was excellent, well-presented and very well received. Working with Linda is a joy. She is warm, kind, and has great taste. She is also flexible, thoughtful, and generous with her time. Linda is very responsive and highly professional. She provides wonderful suggestions, and offers the expert advice you seek in a caterer. For example, when something you seek cannot be executed well at your event due to a particular circumstance, rather than appease you, she lets you know up front that it's not a good idea. When something is not to one's liking, she's ready with alternate suggestions. Zelda's is a high-class, professional, gourmet caterer - who happen to prepare Kosher food.
google avatar

Erica M.

Yelp
I was at the same event as Jacob K. I found myself pleasantly surprised at the quality and taste of the food. Admittedly, the food was out for 1/2 an hour to an hour before it was actually eaten, which is common with catered events where people show up on their schedule rather than the caterer's schedule. Since virtually every morsel was consumed before the meeting ended, I assumed that everyone enjoyed the food as much as I did.

Yelp
Kosher confectionery. Two walls of nuts and candies, as well as handmade truffles and filled chocolates. Friendly service and very cute and lively store. You can find tchotchkes there too. They have great gift packages and will help you find what you need. Whether you are buying for yourself or as a gift you will be very happy with your purchase.

Yelp
Zelda's catered our wedding this April (2017). While the food was tasty and beautifully presented on the day of, the customer service was terrible leading up to our event. Working with Zelda's was in fact the most stressful part of planning our wedding. Linda, president of the catering company and our contact throughout this ordeal, did not respond to our emails promptly or thoroughly -- we had to follow up, sometimes multiple times, before she would respond to our messages, and when she did, she often only answered some of the questions we had posed. But the biggest issue was signing off on our final menu plan. We met Linda in January for our tasting, made some changes to our initial menu selections, and then Linda said she would send us a final menu for us to sign "next week." Five weeks later, she still had not sent it. When we followed up, we also asked for a few additional changes to the menu (we changed our minds about an appetizer, for instance). Long story short, we didn't receive the final menu for another ten weeks: a week before our wedding and the day before our payment was due. And that so-called final menu did not even have any of the changes we had requested at the tasting in January, or the changes we had made afterward! Because the menu was so late, and so inaccurate, my husband ended up having to take the afternoon off work to drive 45 minutes to Linda's office to resolve the issue in person and drop off our check. Needless to say, this was all an extremely frustrating experience. To our great relief, the menu was executed at the wedding as we had planned. Our only complaint about the day of is that the wait staff came out with entrees in the middle of the best man's speech, walking right across the dance floor, blocking everyone's (including the groom and our videographer's) view of the speech. Then they did it again during the father of the groom's speech! In summary, if you work with Zelda's, be prepared to be vigilant about following up on emails, and check through all of your paperwork carefully. We certainly do not believe Linda created these difficulties for us on purpose, but there are definitely some efficiency and organizational issues that need to be resolved.

Yelp
Everything tastes scrumptious here but the prices are a little high! The service was nice. I got raspberry and lemon tarts and man were they good
google avatar

Regina D.

Yelp
The best diary free chocolates I've tried. This place has amazing dessert. The cookies are delicious.

Ben K.

Yelp
The desserts here are great! The candy apples are great and you need at least 2 people to finish. It's hard to stop at one brownie or raspberry bar. The breads are also good. Also nice is the shop has a great selection of chocolates. Why such a low rating? Zelda's does catering now, and if you get more advanced than a bagel platter, the quality dramatically drops. The last catered event I went to, the salad was undressed and weird (strawberries, mangos, AND big chunks of red onion?). The salmon in puff pastry was mediocre (best part: the puff pastry). The green-bean side was pretty terrible. My recommendation: skip the main courses, go straight to dessert.

Nelly G.

Yelp
Maybe the shop looks cute ,but the products is way overpriced for its quality! No matter what truffle flavor you order they all taste the same. The only reason you might like it is if you are kosher from birth and never tasted real not kosher chocolate truffles or kosher ones from great shops in Paris. The baking goods are even worse, all you can taste is sugar and well pronounsed baking soda. Too bad, we stuck with it! There is no discent kosher chocolate shoppes in Chicago area.

Donna G.

Yelp
This is truly as" good as it gets". Our Shabbat dinner was so delicious. We had Moroccan Chicken with Basmati Rice, superb. Our guests ALL had seconds. The chocolate fudge cake was verrrrry delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
They got Mac and cheese now. Yum yum. Cookies are good. Prices are up there but your getting a good product. I would go back

Susan K.

Yelp
Zelda's Kosher Gourmet catered an awesome Italian feast at Congregation Beth Shalom! Delicious meatballs, Italian beef sandwiches, fantastic biscotti and eclairs! Need delicious kosher food for a crowd? Zelda's delivers and your guests will enjoy!

Susan D.

Yelp
I had a very good experience recently. I ordered off the catering menu but I wanted to do the entrees a little different. So I had a few special requests. When I got the food home and unpacked one was not as ordered. I called the store and Ben got on the phone and offered to remake the entree and have it delivered by a certain time - and I do not live nearby. He made it right, it arrived on time, and all the food was delicious!

Iris S.

Yelp
The best honey cake I had EVER! Must try it. I got a surprise package to CA with different sweets for rosh hashanah. Besides being beautiful, everything was very delicious but the apple honey cake topped it all. It stayed fresh & moist waiting for us for 2 days outside in the box since we were away. Everything looked fresh as if I just picked it from the store. I had quite a few honey cakes in my life, including some homemade by a few of my good friends who are excellent bakers but Zelda's was the best by far. My dog was disappointed for not getting the crumbs... I also love the different kinds of mandel breit & all the chocolates are delicious.

Alice S.

Yelp
Excellent Kosher carry out meal for Rosh Hoshannah dinner. Brisket tender, tasty, matzoh ball soup wonderful. Easy to heat and my family thoroughly enjoyed everything.

Robin B.

Yelp
While the sweets were good, the customer service is non-existent. I found this business online and have conducted a transaction with them (I'm in the Washington, DC, area) and what was supposed to be a fundraiser is looking like a SCAM. I cannot get anyone to return my phone calls; when I had my first calls with the customer rep, she never returned my queries promptly (I should've known then not to do business with them). Their shipping prices are astronomical (no slower method available when ordering non-chocolate items that don't melt), and I had to pay highest shipping prices when customer service rep didn't put my order in on time (they were inflexible even though it was their fault). I plan to take these complaints further on the web and even possibly to Chicago's BBB.

Mike G.

Yelp
Wow! Zeldas' treats and candies are the longest lasting, best tasting and best presented Kosher sweet delicacies in Chicago. My wife and I enjoy them on Shabbas and appreciate greatly the selection they have in their store of fresh sweets from chocolate parve candies to many other types as well. They are not even that far from where we live and we recommend them for anyone that needs sweets for their upcoming simcha or happy occasion.

Ellen G.

Yelp
Tried Zelda's Thanksgiving catering menu. The turkey was delicious. So juicy! Everyone loved it. The garlic green beans with kale and carrots were wonderful also. So glad they started the catering business. Will order from them again soon!

Lori P.

Yelp
5 STARS! Zelda's is absolutely phenomenal! We used them for our wedding over the Labor Day weekend and we couldn't have been more pleased. We live out of state and were having our wedding in the Chicago area. It was really scary for us because we didn't know any of the caterers in the area. We researched and talked to quite a few, but at the end of the day we ended up booking Zelda's. One of the main reasons we used Zelda's was because of Linda. She was so kind, organized, understanding and truly listened to us. She continually followed up with us and was so responsive. We knew we could trust her on our wedding day and we weren't wrong - the food and service was phenomenal! Of the appetizers, the meatballs were our guest's favorite. We had a chicken dish and a vegetarian dish. They were wonderful - full of favor, hot, and tasty. We had a twice baked potato on the side, and it was really nice compliment to the chicken. Everything was perfect. Linda even followed up after the wedding to see how everything went, which was super nice. From my first call to after the event, she was completely on the ball on every aspect regarding our event and planning it. We can't thank Linda enough. She is an amazing business woman. Thank you to the entire team at Zelda's for giving us the best day of our lives!!

Howard M.

Yelp
I hired Zelda's to cater an organizational meeting where Kosher fare was needed. I am an extremely busy person and I was VERY pleased with how easy Linda, the owner, made it for me. I gave her my price point, date, time etc. and everything arrived perfectly as promised! Contrary to the opinion of the "amatuer restaurant critic" who also attended the meeting, I thought the food was wonderfully presented and tasted good. Not a morsel was left, so it must have gone over well. The salmon en croute was as cute as could be, with the pastry crust fashioned to look like a fish. The rice had mushroooms and herbs and was very flavorful, the salad was gone by the time it made it around the table. The desserts were "Oh my God !" Zelda's will remain on our preferred caterers list- Thank You Zelda's

Y L.

Yelp
I am with Jacob & Hannah in there comments. I found there work to be sloppy and their staff unprofessionals. There staff appears to be young and naive. I found a hair in 2 cookies I actually ordered a few days ago ...ewww! I won't be going back. BE CAREFUL!
