Can We Please Admit Red Velvet Sucks? | Eater

"Where the author worked during the summer of 2007, this old-line Italian bakery specialized in cannoli, ricotta cheesecake, pignoli, and a selection of sponge cakes that had changed little over decades. The shop initially resisted making red velvet—its owner often replying, “We don’t make it. We’re Italian”—but persistent customer demand eventually forced it onto the menu, a small but telling example of how nationwide trends and market pressure can push a traditional, regionally rooted pastry shop to adopt popular flavors it once rejected." - Jaya Saxena

It's a very clean busy good smelling bakery. They have just about everything you can think of and their Italian bread is really good. The sfugatellas are really good. The only inconvenient things is that it's a cash only place but on the upside they have great prices.

2-22-25. Always a positive visit. I walk in always looking for a smile and excellent service. Perfect bread and sweets. -thank you for your service and neighborhood support. I always get 2 large seeded / 1 large plain Italian bread. Plus something sweet. 😂

Google
I live out of state and this is my go to bakery every time I come visit family. Everything is fresh, delicious and everyone is super nice! I called and spoke with Carmine to order a cake for my Mom’s 75th birthday. Sent him a pic of what I wanted and they did such a great job! Everyone loved the cake! Thank you so much.

Google
Awesome neighborhood bakery that I’ve been going to since I was a little kid. Still cash only though. But there is a bank right next door. The cookies always taste fresh unlike other bakeries that you can tell has been sitting there for a while. Always fresh.

Google
Enter at your own risk! Very fresh and delicious pastries, can make you get addicted to indulging yourself italian style pastries, and the prices makes you buy more than you really need. Good thing I live far enough to feel safe of becoming dependent on super sweets.

Google
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! Staff is ALWAYS amazing. Their cookies are so good I can honestly eat an entire box by myself. Ever since I discovered this place I don't go anywhere else for my cakes. I can't believe how affordable they are. Writing about it makes me want to go the there now.

Yelp
Love this bakery . It's my go to , live their hrs they're open from 6am. I can pickup a cake before heading to work for when we're celebrating someone's bday or whatever the ocassion. But unfortunately the last time I oicked up my usual red velvet it felt like the quality of the cake wasn't there. It didn't taste as good. I got it for my husband birthday like always do and he also felt like it wasn't as good. I'm willing to try again because that's my go to bakery even though I've moved to westchester but got friends and family still in the BX. Service has always been nice. Usually young girls always willing to help. I like that you could be in and out as there's meter parking

Yelp
This is my favorite bakery ever. Their pastries are so delicious and you get a huge assortment of cakes to chose from for any occasion. I love their fresh bagels and the ladies there are so friendly and kind. Thank you for always being amazing.

Yelp
Lovely staff. The mini sfogliatelle are the best pastry I have ever had in my life (available Thurs - Sunday only). Large selection of delicious bread at reasonable prices. Anisette toast is also a highlight, if a bit expensive

Yelp
Visited the Wednesday before Thanksgiving! It was packed with customers which can only mean one thing...the bakery items are fresh and delicious. I got a pound of cookies and they were absolutely mouth watering. I will definitely visit again and try the awesome looking pastries.

Yelp
The best thing here is the cannolis! That is the only food that I've had there. It's amazing. They are very nice. The service is great. The ambience is cute.

Yelp
Staff is always friendly and helpful. It is a CASH ONLY spot so be prepared to come with more than you "think" you'll spend - I always do! I always have good intentions.... I swear, but I end up getting so much more delicious cookies, cakes, cannolis and sfogiatelles than what I plan on. The prices are VERY fair. And the quality is consistent. Some of my favorites are their in house made rainbow cookies (they have 2 varieties - one they make and one is shipped in), their mini choc. Cannolis, the stogiatelles and their raspberry filled Italian cookies. I've never had their cakes besides a slice of red velvet which was pretty average. Not bad at all but not outstanding. For example the cream is EXTREMELY sweet and thick, but some people love that so it's all a matter of preference. I do also like their cream puffs and I know their St Joseph's are super popular too.

Yelp
I love this bakery located in the Pelham Bay section of the Bronx. They have some of the best Italian cookies, cakes, and pastries. They also make custom cakes and are always prepared for every holiday with beautiful themed cakes and cupcakes. One of my favorite go to places when I have a sweet tooth. The only down side is they only accept cash. No cards or Apple Pay. Ig:@soooomuchfun

Yelp
I still dream about their cannolis at night! I wish I lived closer so I could visit more often! I will definitely be back.

Yelp
I have been coming here for years. Best service. The bakery items are vast and tasty. If you don't see it they have it, ask. My favorite are the butter cookies with the sprinkles.

Yelp
Great bread and pastries. Definitely stop by if you're in the neighborhood! One of the best Italian bakeries around

Yelp
I've passed this place a gazillion times and never thought to walk in here. But on this day, for my single girlfriends Galantines Day Brunch, I promised dessert. I recall my girl Mercedes and Jason M. from Yelp purchasing from here, so I followed suit. Walking in, I was overwhelmed by the options which were plentiful. I only recognized the Lobster Tails from having my first and best ever Lobster Tail from Ferrara Bakery during a City Walking Tour. Anyway, my experience with the young lady serving me this early Sunday morning was pleasant and helpful. I mentioned it was my first time here, so she patiently waited while I made my choices. No rushing or coaxing was involved, so I'll take the blame leaving with 3 boxes of goodies totaling $30.00...well worth it. Everyone enjoyed everything. Though the best out of the bunch to me was the big puffy creamy thing. I think it's called St. Joseph's? Their Lobster Tails were no Ferrara, but good enough for this Galantines date and maybe for my next visit. TIP: Come early on Sundays. There will be a line Parking. Atrocious. Prepare to double park No dusting of powdered sugar necessary Cash Only

Yelp
I'm not too sure about this location. They've very nice on days when I take my daughter trick or treating there but when I've went on two separate occasions they seem to be bothered by an influx of customers. One of the times that I went they were complaining at how many customers decided to come to close to closing time, which caused me to walk out because why do you feel so comfortable to express yourself in this way in front of the customers? I'll try them again one day but when you have a nice and respectful bakery down the block why would I choose to deal with disrespect. The baked goods look great though I hope that I can try them one day.

Thomas R.

Yelp
Amazing pastry - the pignoli cookies and sfogliatelle were incredible! Everyone raved about them.

Yelp
A decent old bakery in the neighborhood. The bakery has a nice basic menu of breads, cookies, small pastries, and small cakes. They haven't evolved to the next level of custom cakes, cookies, and cake pops. If you are looking that is not your place. Service is decent also. Basic products are yummy.

Yelp
DINERO en efectivo ONLY. It happened to me when I was about to pay for 2, 1/2lb boxes of cookies in one, pastries in another. But I made a mad dash right next door to a Chase and get cash. Zeppieri is a longstanding institution that has dominated the Pelham Bay Area in The Bronx underneath the 6 line for a very long time. Since I had picked up lunch across the street, I knew this would be the perfect time to stop in here. The moment you walk in here, the sweet but delicate scent surrounds you. Whether you're looking for freshly baked bread loaves or rolls, cookies, pastries, and so much more, for a couple dollars- this is the place. Zeppieri showcases their pastries and cookies on several glass counters. I picked some mini cannolis for my mom, Napoleons, Cream Puffs, etc. I on the other hand, picked mostly chocolate stuffed star cookies, Linzer ones and the long-type, jelly stuffed cookies also in chocolate. For the life of me, I've put Zeppieri off my radar so many times and coming here was a nice dessert ending. Service was pleasant and the young lady taking my order wasn't huffing and puffing because I didn't have any cash- and was kind enough to wait for me...Gracias!

Yelp
Run, don't walk to this old school bakery, home to the freshest breads and tastiest treats in all of NY! With just one bite of their best sfogliatelle, you're transported to the rocky beaches of the Italian Amalfi Coast.

Yelp
Absolutely thee best bakery in 10461. From their old school downhome feeling to their great service and baked selections...A+! My favorite is their Red Velvet cake...I buy it at least once a month to share w my coworkers...delicious!

Yelp
I love this place and I only ever buy one thing from here; the leaf cookies. They make the best leaf cookies i have ever had. (Don't come for me because I don't know the name.) They are so butter, have the right amount of chocolate, and honestly just taste so good. They weigh them out for you. I usually just buy 10 dollars worth and go on about my day. The bakery has a variety of cookies and cakes that are baked fresh. The girls there are really professional and friendly so please tip them if you can. But definitely give them a try especially since its a local business in that area. Support them!
google avatar

Dominik D.

Yelp
They make a pretty decent congratulations cake. It has a moist softness with an appropriate amount of filling and a generous, but not gratuitous amount of butter cream.

Yelp
Just walk in you smell the goodness Cash only so bring it. Fresh breads also are the best

Yelp
There was a time when the Bronx was full of real, old time, Italian bakeries; but one by one they've faded into nostalgia! Zeppieri is a place that has remained unchanged and can transport me back to my youth in the 1960s and even further for those older than I! In a world where so little is the same, what a treasure this place is!

Yelp
This is my go-to bakery for all birthdays, family gatherings, special events and just regular dinners. LOVE everything at this bakery, truly, especially the ricotta cheesecake (made at Easter), chocolate, red velvet and tiramisu, cupcakes, all desserts, ciabatta bread, cupcakes, etc. The young women who work there are very sweet no matter how early or late; they always offer my rambunctious 7-year old a cookie and are so professional. One of my favorite bakeries in the world!!
google avatar

Genie M.

Yelp
Delicious pastries! We had the Neapolitan, chocolate dipped butter cookies with raspberry filling and the rainbow cake. We were all satisfied with our made with love treats.

Jai M.

Yelp
Been standard for years in my household to come here for birthday cakes. Nothing needs to be changed, they're doing great work without having to sling cake pops. Consistent, great quality, always experienced quick and friendly service.
google avatar

Yelp
What more could you ask for in a bakery? Came in on Pi Day to purchase an apple pie with crumbs on top. It was super delicious and costed $10 ! A whole pie like that for $10 is incredible. CASH ONLY
google avatar

Kemmy I.

Yelp
I've being buying cake here for a while but usually never eat the cake. I love their service. I usually just call to place the order and it's usually always ready when I need/when they tell me to come for it. The girls at the counter are pleasant too. The last cake I ordered was a chocolate mousse and it was delicious. I would have loved less filling in the center but still a very delicious treat.

Yelp
Zeppieri & Sons has always been in my periphery, but I'm a little fixed on where I get my Italian baked goods from so I had never really tried it for myself. This changed however the other day when I was attending a barbecue. I wanted to bring a pie but my usual go-to in Westchester was closed for vacation; since Zeppieri advertises they specialize in pies, I decided to give them a try. Actually getting to Zeppieri can be a little tricky if you're driving because it's located off a busy side street of Westchester Ave (you can easily get there by train since it's directly under the 6). Once inside though there's a nice variety of cakes, pies, cookies, and other baked goods. I was just looking for pies, and since they were relatively inexpensive I decided to pick up two: the apple crumb and the cherry crumb. Both pies were great - the cherry had good flavor with just the right amount of filling vs. crumb top. The apple was also good - the fruit was a little stiff but it's not apple season so I wasn't too bothered by it. Again though, great fruit-to-crumb balance and good flavor. Overall, I'm intrigued - it's so hard go find good bakeries these days so I'm glad there's something close to home that puts out solid product. One of my friends has great things to say about their marzipan cannoli, so perhaps a return trip is in order sooner rather than later.

Simally S.

Yelp
Ordered an Italian cheesecake for Thanksgiving and it had absolutely zero taste, not even sugar. It was as if we were eating a sponge. Everyone who took a slice had one bite and threw it out. I was very embarrassed!

Eric J.

Yelp
Best jam sandwich cookies I've ever had. Friendly + helpful staff, delicious cookies. What more could you ask for? (Also it's cash-only so have that on hand!)
google avatar

Steve F.

Yelp
This bakery has proudly served the community for decades. Their bread, rolls and pastries have the same flavors and textures now as they did for me 45 years ago. Their S rolls are known to be the best in the entire city. No one makes a tastier loaf of bread. Just the best And you can stop by in the morning for delicious coffee and a buttered seeded fresh club roll for much less than DD
google avatar

Yelp
I love bakeries and what I love even more are old school bakeries. From the outside, neon light included, decor to the selection of classic goodies inside, this place is OG Italian and OG New York. They had some beautiful cakes on display, a huge selection of baked good, and all kinds of cookies. I tried the Apple Turnover, Napoleon, and Cannoli. All in one sitting. Don't judge me, we all have our weaknesses. At least I didn't get my usual cup of milk, that I typically love with dessert. All three were tasty and fresh. Would love to come back here and try more of their stuff. Cash Only
google avatar

Yelp
Love this place!! My mom used to take me in as a child 50 years ago! Pictured below is one of their specialties- green marzipan cannoli dipped in chocolate! You can't find these ANYWHERE ELSE!!!!! Everything they make is so good and made there!! Thank you Dominic!! Rest In Peace!!!

Yelp
I live upstate but whenever I work near Pelham Bay Park and make a point to stop in and get some treats for the house... or the ride to the house if it doesn't actually make it home with me. The ladies behind the counter are always friendly and quick with the service. They are a cash only business so be prepared but there is a Chase Bank only three doors down. They have a good selection of Italian pastries and bread but on Thursday's they make the most delicious custardy bread pudding. It's not overly sweet and they constantly rotate the flavors like chocolate chip, rum raisin or blueberry from week to week and when they sell out that is it until the next week so I always get a few when I make it in time. Same thing with the lobster tails they only make them but only Thursday through Sunday and when they run out that's all she wrote until the next week. The cannolis that come in many flavors and sizes and eclairs are delicious as well. During the big holidays they always have specialty holiday themed cookies and treats. I'm personally not big on pies but they have many flavors that look delicious and I always see them being purchased. They are also good when I need to grab some fresh bread for dinner and they sell day old bread on the back counter when you enter for half off. The prices can't be beat. Todays order - two chocolate chip bread puddings and a lobster tail for only $12.

Yelp
This bakery is close to my house and it's decent enough to get cookies and pastries when I can't get my Arthur Ave. fix. And their prices are very responsible. I think you can get a pound of cookies for like 10 bucks. They aren't the best, but this will do if you can't get to Morris Park or Arthur Ave. The parking situation around here is not ideal either.
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
I stopped in to check out this bakery as it was possibly the only one open till late, I must say they are super responsible with the signs during this covid and also had people wait accordingly to place an order to go, well let's get to what I ordered which was a small selection of goodies to please my sweet tooth I got a piece of red velvet cake, a cannoli, and some rainbow cookies. Attached are the photos and again tasted great. will be coming back again.
google avatar

Margo R.

Yelp
My husband purchased 2 "sugar free" apple turnovers for dessert last night. We're both diabetics. I took one bite .... the apples were black! Needless to say, we threw them out. We are so surprised because other than the turnovers Zeppieri's is usually good. Hopefully, they use fresh ingredients.

Yelp
We order bread, rolls & bagels everyday and they deliver to our location. We also order sheet long birthday cakes at least once a month for our establishment. Carmine (owner) delivers it himself. He is a very respectful young man. The cakes are so delicious we get them with all different fillings. One of our favorites is the cannoli filling or the chocolate moose. The outside is real whip cream - not that butter cream fake stuff. All I have to say is you can't just eat one piece. The bread we use to make eggplant sandwiches. The rolls & bagels are used in the morning with coffee. They taste good with butter or cream cheese. They also sell all kinds of Italian pastries and they are always fresh. In March, they sell St. Joseph pastries - they are so good. If you want to treat yourself to something special you should try this bakery. YUMM!!
google avatar

Jullia A.

Yelp
My daughters first birthday was a complete success because of their cake! Literally everyone loved it and complimented it all day. I ordered a two-tier custom cake a little less then 2 weeks before her birthday and it was no problem. I did one tier cannoli, and the second chocolate mousse. The cake is everything I asked for and so beautiful. The baker was so accommodating and listened to everything I wanted. When everyone was done eating their cake, they all wanted to know the bakery I got it from. You will not be disappointed if you go here, and prices are spectacular!
google avatar

Yelp
nothing was bad here- but unfortunately I was given wrong items when there really was no one else in the store so i'm not sure what happened :( I was super looking forward to a napoleon and opened my box to a cannoli. got carrot cake which was the star of the show. would maybe return but really watch as my orders being completed. also weirdly annoyed me none of my boxes were properly closed

Hebeh B.

Yelp
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS PLACE. This place has the BEST cookies and cannoli. Don't even get me started on how good the cake is! I buy the mocha cake even when no event is happening. Every birthday and special event you best believe that I'm buying desserts from Zeppieri. No other bakery can compete with this. The service is so fast and they get straight to the point. Everything is beautifully displayed and decorated for the season and holidays.

Iliana F.

Yelp
This is such a wonderful bakery, very friendly and it is a delight to shop for pastries there.

Iris M.

Yelp
This bakery has racist and unbothered employees. I have been here a few times for their cookies , they always look down on me and rush me when I order. They treat white customers differently.
google avatar

Joanne C.

Yelp
There is no comparison to bread, cookies & pastries from Zeppieri. Decades of delicious goodies & hopefully more To come.

Yelp
Great product one of the few jewels left in NYC end of the 6 train. Wish they took credit cards and wish they had sfogliatelle on Monday's!

Yelp
They did an Amazing job I order this beautiful cake for my nieces first birthday and they outdid themselves everyone loved the cake and cupcakes At the shop the lady that helped us was extremely helpful a place that I will always comeback
google avatar

Yelp
Oh my...have the times changed and so has this bakery! Sugary and then some! As for counter girls, what would it cost for them to shed a smile? Giving them 2 stars just because I have fond memories of this place in the late 90s as serving exceptional italian delicacies. 30 years later this place stands far from that!
google avatar

Ariana A.

Yelp
Best bakery in the Bronx. Their sliced bread is addicting. I've ordered cakes from here for years for all my Family members birthdays and they are always delicious. My family stops by once a week to pick up sweets. We also really enjoy their coffee cake. The workers are always friendly and quick.
