Best Restaurants and Food Carts in Portland’s St. Johns Neighborhood

"Portland is home to relatively few Greek restaurants, but this Ivanhoe spot offers standards like souvlaki, gyros, and horiatiki (often known as Greek salad). Those stopping in for dinner may want to sit down to a whole grilled branzino or red snapper, followed by a slab of baklava; otherwise, a stuffed pita sandwich works well for a picnic at Cathedral Park." - Rebecca Roland, Brooke Jackson-Glidden

The staff are so friendly and welcoming. We’ve tried a few different dishes and they’ve all tasted delicious, with lots of bright colors and flavors on the plate. A great mix of comfort and healthy. The vibe is sports bar and it’s fine, but my only complaint is the lighting is brighter than the face of the sun. This place is a gem.

Great drinks/ cocktails. We got sex on the Greek and the orange margarita, both were phenomenal. Their hummus is the best in the game and an absolute must if you stop there. They have a great sports vibe on the inside and the outdoor seating area has great placement of tvs and privacy from the busy road

Fresh, sumptuous food with warm and speedy service! We had the lamb gyros on our second visit and they were fantastic—perfectly cooked and balanced with creamy tzatziki sauce and tangy feta. The pita was soft and buttery and the entire meal was proportioned just right. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming, with swift and charming service. Prices are reasonable and reflect the quality of the food and experience.

Google
Such a great little family run restaurant. The fav board looked amazing and I loved that they had some vegan choices. They even had a vegan gyro! So yummy!!! I definitely recommend this place.

To the Owner: Google and Yelp listed this business as open. I showed up between 4p-430p on Saturday , April 5th and the gate that leads to the business was secured. The sign at the door had the "Open" sign posted. Is this restaurant still open for business??

Today I got to try this place for the first time and it was incredible. The door was in an odd location, otherwise I think it would have been busier if the entrance was more obvious. I have always enjoyed gyros but I find most pita bread to be imperfect, but this was the best pita I've ever had by a landslide!! The portion was wonderful and the pricing was affordable especially given how much food there was and the fact that I was not charged for the extra tzatziki. I will absolutely be going there again and hopefully bringing more folks along with me!

Google
An absolute gem. Every single thing we ordered was great, and the portions were generous (we over ordered and yet could not help but eat it all). The Honey Feta dip is perhaps the best bite I've had this year. Staff was incredibly nice and helpful and the location was clean and well kept. Will not visit Portland again without stopping in!

Zeus Kusina uses their restaurant to host parties, which is of course a normal thing for a restaurant to do, but they set up speakers in their outdoor area and don't set a reasonable limit on the volume for the music being played. Whenever they host parties, anyone living or dining out in a two-block radius has to listen to music that's so loud it reverberates through our walls throughout the day. This is a regular occurrence at the restaurant, and the managers have not responded well to polite requests to keep their speakers to a reasonable noise level. The issue is not that they host parties or play music, but that they play music so loud it's impossible to escape on a partially residential block where many people live. It wouldn't hurt anyone just to keep the music to a reasonable volume. Edit: The restaurant's response is weird. Practically every other bar/restaurant in the area plays music. Several host concerts. None of them blast their music as loudly as Zeus Kusina when they host parties. The idea that you'd have to move your business because someone asks you to keep your music to a reasonable volume is childish. Just be a decent neighbor and keep the volume to a normal level.

Yelp
Noticed this place as we were headed to a grandson's soccer game. Had the lamb gyros and hummus plate. All were terrific and would highly recommend.

Yelp
Food was just good but a bit pricey for the portion and quality. Service was very friendly, the lady (who I think was the owner) was very jovial and attentive.

Yelp
I was very happy eating at Zeus Kusina. Great food. Great prices. Great service. Comfortable setting. Homey. Sunday Night Football. Great time. I got a beef gyro. The beef was soft and tender. Great wrap. Very soft and fresh. Coulda used a little crisp to the outside of it though. Good feta cheese. That purple crunchy cabbage was great. Good crunch to it. Fun color. Little zing of acidity. The pepper was also good. Soft. Not too intense, but also gives you a little kick. The potatoes were fine, but a little disappointing to me. They weren't crunchy! Since I was there for Sunday Night Football, that gets a C'mon Man. But to their credit, the potatoes were in fact pretty soft and fresh. I just need my crunch.

Yelp
I found this place because I was looking for a dinner spot with an outdoor patio for my dog. The outside is kind of unassuming but this place is delicious! I ordered a beef gyro and a chicken gyro which were both delicious. The woman who helped us was very kind. I would definitely come again because the food was great, filling, and the outside patio was comfortable

Yelp
We'd been considering going here for a while but always picked something else. We ended up here after a couple of tries at other places didn't work out and are we glad we did! I'm not sure why they weren't very busy, but I get the good reviews! My only complaints was that it was a bit challenging to order. Their online menu and in house menu do not quite match up. Despite this, all of the food we tried was delicious. Their outdoor seating is completely covered so it was great for a rainy day. The absolute stand outs are the pita bread- so soft and mouth watering flavor, the hummus- I was a bit unsure about the black truffle flavor but it works, the feta and honey dip- what a surprise flavor! The meats were tender and well flavored and my favorite was the chicken. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
I was wandering by from somewhere else and was jonesing for lunch. I got the vegan gyro, and it was delicious! The herbs and flavoring were perfect. The salad and potatoes were just right as accompaniments. The pita was nice and fluffy with a sumptuous amount of hummus. Would totally come back some time!

Yelp
This is a hidden gem in the St. John's neighborhood. The service is fabulous and there is never a long wait to order or to get your food. The lamb gyro is my go to and it is so flavorful and filling. Their lemon potatoes are addictive!

Yelp
I tried the lamb gyro which was fresh and just right. I'm happy to have a new place on the peninsula that isn't just pizza and burgers. The inside is decorated with a soccer theme and they have TVs inside and out on the covered patio so if your looking for somewhere to watch a game and get some non traditional bar food this would be your spot. They also have beer on tap and serve wine and mixed drinks.

Yelp
Great Greek fast food . I'm not into sports but did mind 4 tv screens showing sports. I couldn't figure out the parking as there were 4 marked spots and maybe 3 unmarked spots that I had to park in but then was worried about my car. Not sure I would back unless there is a marked parking spot I can use

Yelp
Awesome food. Flavor. People. They typically have soccer playing on the TVs. Outdoor patio is fun!

Yelp
Absolutely delighted to give this local gem a glowing 5-star review! From the moment you step in, the aroma of authentic Mediterranean spices envelops you, promising a culinary journey like no other. The locally owned and operated charm shines through in every aspect - from the warm hospitality to the meticulously crafted dishes bursting with flavor. Each bite feels like a delicious homage to Mediterranean cuisine, prepared with love and tradition. Don't miss the black truffle hummus, it's a game-changer! If you're craving an authentic dining experience with a personal touch, look no further than this delightful establishment.

Yelp
We are always excited to support a neighborhood business and this place did not disappoint! We got the lamp gyro, branzini and a salad. Generous portions, attentive staff, reasonable prices. Will def be back!

Yelp
Run don't walk!!! So good. Everything perfectly prepared and tasty. Get the appetizer with pita bread and dips.

Yelp
Upon eating my first bite of the chicken gyro, I literally said out loud "oh heck yeah." This was so delicious. I'm stoked this is a block from my work: I'm going to eat here all the time. The people who were running the place seem to be incredibly kind, too, which makes the whole thing even better. More food like this is needed in Saint John's!

Yelp
Thrilled to stumble upon this restaurant. Delicious lamb gyro with roasted potatoes and cabbage slaw was filling, with generous portion size. The best gyro I've eaten in Portland. Fast and friendly service in a clean and attractive setting perfect for watching a game. Looking forward to trying more items from the menu.

Yelp
Top-five restaurant in the neighborhood! And yes, I've tried them all. Oh. My. God. This food is just outstanding. Ordered takeout via website through ChowNow - picked the peppers, the Greek salad, the Zeus and Hera, and the vegan Gyro, and it was ready in less than 25 minutes. All were perfectly spiced, wonderfully balanced, well portioned, and downright delicious. It only had one review on yelp as of tonight and we hadn't tried it yet (it hasn't been open long), but this will now be in heavy rotation for our family going forward. Lovely people, lovely food, lovely ingredients. Thank you Zeus!

Yelp
So good! Big flavors. Fresh. Got the Horiatiki salad, Loukaniko sausage, and Piperies skewers. Will try the whole menu.

Yelp
Pretty solid Mediterranean option in St Johns! I got a couple gyros that were tasty and I look forward to going back and trying more.

Yelp
I've gotten food from here twice now and it's sooo good!! The Greek salad is amazing and fresh and the lemony potatoes with chicken bites (appetizer) is so flavorful and delicious. The lemony potatoes are out of this world. The platters are also great. I'm so happy to have amazing Greek food in our neighborhood :)
