Best Restaurants in Oxford | Where to Eat on a Day Trip to Oxford | Eater London

"The ever-trendy Jericho might traditionally be home to writers and artists, but this Chinese-Malaysian restaurant draws people in from all over the city, and beyond. When ordering, ignore the usual staples and go straight for dishes like crispy cereal king prawns, mango chicken and Sichuan style lamb brisket. The Sichuan dishes in particular can bring diners out in a chilli-flecked sweat, but that’s just part of the fun." - Alexander Larman

Great authentic Chinese and Malaysian dishes. Chef met up and asked for feedback, she is a great chef and expected her cooked dishes met to our taste, she left feeling satisfied meeting her targets. Thank you Chef.

This is my first visit to this Malay restaurant but sufficed to say it deserves another visit. That Rendang Beef was better than I had imagined but was certainly good enough to recommend it to anyone. Nasi Goreng could have been better. Waitress was helpful and cheerful.

We came here for lunch and it wasnt busy. The service was fast. We ordered nasi goreng, szechuan aubergine with beef and mango juice. The aubergine was nice and saucy, its medium spicy. The nasi goreng was just ok, its lacked of depth imho. Overall nice experience

As a Chinese, I don’t really understand why this place says it’s Chinese. The beef was really dry and the veggie almost tasteless. And I can’t believe a bowl of rice was charged for 5£ and it wasn’t even the Asian rice nor cooked in a proper way. Totally overly charging for what was offered (don’t forget they also charge 12.5% service fee on the top). I get it that they try to offer a nice service, thus 2 stars instead of 1, but why does there have to be someone staring at the hallway to see if anyone needs service while there were only 3 occupied tables?

Google
The nasi goreng was ok. Great presentation of ingredients, the combination of the crackers, peanuts, salted fish and cucumber added to the unique texture and flavour. However, the fried rice seemed to lack the 鑊氣 I was looking for (translation: it refers to a taste that only comes with proper stir-frying the rice). Maybe this is how authentic Malaysian cuisine is prepared - I am not 100% familiar with it to begin with - but I had really high hopes when I discovered this Malaysian restaurant. Nonetheless, the service was very good.

Wanted to try some Chinese food while in Oxford and do came to Zheng, we loved the experience. The service was nice, the food was really really good, loved every dish, the schezuan aubergine beef was the best.. will definitely recommend this place.

Yesterday, I went here for dinner and I was very happy with my food here. This is the first time I have ever eaten inside this restaurant as at the past, I only ordered takeaways from here, which tasted delicious. I had the Nasi Goreng, the Sesame Prawn Toast and the Coconut Rice, all of them which were very delicious. Service was also good as well.

Yelp
Food and delivery were great however the soup was not packaged correctly causing the soup to leak out into the bag. At least they double bagged it so it didn't leak however, they were unresponsive when we reported the problem. The response was simply "sorry we cannot offer a refund"...weren't asking for a refund we were asking for a replacement. My advice, eat in and enjoy the food....avoid ordering soup as a take away option.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere. Very tasty and decent chinese food. Service is friendly and attentive. Highly recommend.

Yelp
I've been here two times. Maybe its because of the food I tried, but I wasn't impressed, at all. The food is ok, not as authentic as I thought based on all the comments. The portion of the food is average, if not small. In my opinion, the price is too much for the portion. The environment is not bad. Out of all the Chinese restaurants in Oxford, this one is probably one of the best. I can see that this restaurant won some sorta awards before. But honestly, I wouldn't even rate this as the top 3 Chinese restaurant in Oxford.

Yelp
From my experience, this is not authentic Malaysian cuisine. I ordered specifically Malaysian items from the menu and it's not the vibrant kind of spice you'd taste in Malaysia. This has definitely been made more bland to meet the local taste. When I saw 'roti canai' on the written blackboard menu, I was excited at the possibility of getting a nice handmade roti with curry. Unfortunately, what came out was one of those roti parathas that sell for less than 2£ in the freezer aisle in a pack of 4, for which they charged 6£ here! This place is definitely popular and beloved by locals here. They style it a bit upscale with a nicer atmosphere, smaller portions and higher prices. Not truly authentic tastes, but pretty decent compared to what else is available nearby.

Yelp
I went here for dinner with my family.. we ordered the roast duck, green beans, mapo tofu, crispy chicken with mango, eggplant, and char kweytiao.. all of the dishes taste really good except the char kweytiao..the char kweytiao was just average..the staffs were very friendly.. CONCLUSION = RECOMMENDED!!

Yelp
Food is incredible! The peppercorn tofu ws my favourite dish in Oxford, and I am devastated and heartbroken that it has been taken off the menu. Please, I am begging you to bring it back

Yelp
I was a student in Oxford a couple years ago and I paid £7.5 for take away and literally got one measly piece of tofu. It was a good piece of tofu, but definitely not worth £7.5. My friend ordered chicken and also got ridiculously tiny portions. We both were still hungry after and had to go elsewhere for more food.

Yelp
Great meal here! Very competent Char Kuey Tiao. Friendly servers. Amazing Tepung Pelita dessert, picture posted. Was recommended by a Singapore native; now I know why.

Yelp
I'm Chinese. The food is 80% authentic, which is good enough for me (both Szechuan and Dimdum). I recommend Zheng!

Yelp
Nice environment and service. In terms of food they are definitely more of an expert in southeast Asian (Malaysian and Singaporean) food than mainland Chinese food. I tried the sambal tofu and coconut rice which were great; their Mapo tofu isn't that authentic.

Yelp
This is a great pan-Asian restaurant, with and emphasis on Chinese and Malaysian food. It's very busy (book ahead), noisy and somewhat chaotic, but none of that detracts from the great food!

Yelp
Owned by a guy who used to work at Sojo, he's told me that he got the original chef from Sojo working for him. This restaurant offers more variety (e.g. Malaysian, Singaporean, Sichuan, Cantanese) than Sojo so probably caters for more people. Good is always good and I'll highly recommend, especially the nutty chicken and Godmother's chilli. Inside is modern and nice and they also do a delivery which is nice!
