Ziggy's is absolutely a hidden gem in Leander. I love finding family owned shops that specialize in home goods like bread, bagels, and meat. Ziggy's is my latest discovery and the house-made meats are what you MUST go there for.
My favorite breakfast now is farm fried eggs and fresh baked sourdough toast from Sanford Bakery in Round Rock, with fried Pasztet from Ziggy's. Pasztet is like a pate' but much much tastier. The owner tells me that his grandmother used to fry it up and make sandwiches. "When other kids had spam, we had THIS"! And it is just amazing. Blessings to his grandmother.
All you do is take out a small pan, medium heat, add a little butter. Then while the toast is making, slice some Pasztet and lightly fry each side till brown. Put the Pasztet on a plate. Season and fry the eggs in the pan until done like you like them. Toast is ready. Put eggs and toast on the plate with the Pasztet. The best breakfast ever!
I bought fresh ingredients from Ziggy's and made myself a schnitzel sandwich with smoked bacon, swiss, and sauerkraut dressed with Polish mustard. It was a sandwich the chain shops wished their food tasted like in real life.
What I did was slice the roll and dress with mayo and Polish mustard. Heat the the schnitzel and smoked bacon for 10 minutes at 350. Put swiss cheese on the schnitzel and bake 5 minutes. Remove from the oven and place schnitzel and bacon on the roll, then top with sauerkraut. Add some chips. BBQ is my favorite. Eat it on the couch while watching a movie.
The kielbasa is excellent. The turkey sausage is amazing. Szymkowa is wonderful. Lamb is perfect. These are all house-made meats from family recipes that the folks from Eastern Europe that live here come to the shop for.
I've been to the shop four times now and each visit is a fun treat. The owner will let you try his product in advance. That's the best advertising you can get. What's on offer is always changing so you won't get bored going there. There's a good liquor store right next door if you want to pick up a bottle of wine to go with the meat and cheese board you make to sit outside in the cooling weather we're having in November.
I'm reluctant to post this review because I'm afraid this place gets discovered and it's a line out the door most days. But at the same time I feel selfish for not speaking up. If you get tired of HEB, visit Ziggy's. Give a family shop like Ziggy's, and Sanford, and Williamson County Bagels a try. Treat yourself occasionally to something different.
