Zillicoah I had heard about the first time I made my way to Asheville to visit the breweries. Because I was without car and trying to avoid using Uber too many times, I kept my initial tour of the breweries to the downtown area... until this second trip, which found me with my girlfriend's car and a desire to check out what more than one person had been raving since they opened.
They are a gem.
Located in Woodfin, about a 10 minute drive from downtown Asheville, Zillicoah is housed in a large warehouse with an open bay area and a vast back yard. With the amount of space it houses, the brewery can easily host a handful of private parties and small festival at the same time for any time of the year... even when it snows. The outdoor area for Zillicoah has a very bucolic vibe -- down to earth, welcoming, and quiet, depending on where you are located. The property and grounds is great if you want to order a beer and hang out with some friends at one of the nearby picnic tables, take pictures next to the large R2-D2 sculpture, or walk along the French Broad River.
Because this became the final brewery stop of our adventurous weekend getaway in Western North Carolina, I only managed to order a blackberry sour. The beer was quite class and lovely, delightful to drink and enjoy while enjoying the surroundings with my lady. I didn't buy any bottles or cans from this brewery, but only due to the fact we had filled our cooler to the breaking point and couldn't fit anything else in it if we tried. So unfortunately, I had to pass this time around until we return again.
Asheville and the surrounding area consists of many terrific breweries producing some of the best beer east of the Mississippi River. Zillicoah is no exception with a great taproom and production facility to enjoy some suds and good times.
