Cheers to the successful venture because, frankly, I thought their first attempt at roasting coffee was a feeble fumble in the early 2000s. Come late 2018 and the coffee roasters venture, conveniently placed in-line with the bakery, creamery and candy shop is a fine way to while away a couple of hours.
The famous deli in Kerry Town came first. At that time it was just the deli, bagels, albeit good, were outsourced as was the coffee. Like the bagels, the initial attempt to break free of outsiders wasn't entirely successful and required trial and error redrawing to reach present levels of output and relative consistency. Today Zingerman's coffee is available directly from the roasters (they have one-pound bags here), The Roadhouse on Stadium, the deli, Plum Markets and mail-order.
The selection is phenomenal, I like that their roasters tend to emphasize the inherent flavors of single-sourced varieties and the blends are also top notch. Standouts include the Eithiopian beans, Italian espresso roasts and Sumatra types. The café is large, well lit, set up for technology and goodies galore. Prices, although high, are comparable with similar higher end coffees locally (Mighty Good) or nationally (Intelligensia).
