I came to Des Moines for a wedding earlier this year. The bride loves burgers and she loves zombies, so when she heard about this place, we obviously had to come and check it out. In a beautiful section of the city that literally all the locals called "the cool, younger people side of town," the location was easily walkable from any part of the city, and it has a long patio that gives you a nice view of the downtown traffic.
Walk inside, and you're greeted by excellent zombie props and memorabilia plastered over every square inch of wall, as well as huge zombie mannequins for some pretty neat photo ops. There's even unique artwork murals that are Des Moines zombie themed, for a nice touch of city personalization.
So when you hear about this place, you hear about two things, the burgers and the milkshakes. You have to get a burger and a milkshake. They're so good. So I did.
I ordered La Horde (goat cheese, bacon, caramelized onion, mayo). A double, of course. They use thinner, smash-style burger patties, but they are very juicy and have a good, beefy flavor. Take that beefy flavor and add the tangy goat cheese and the crispy bacon. So good. I also like that all the burger options are simple. Onion and may, and that's it on this burger. Simple and perfect.
I also got to try the Juan of the Dead (green chile + cheese croquette, Monterey Jack cheese, caramelized onion, chipotle mayo). This one was also really nice. The cheese croquette makes a really fun, crispy cheese bomb that makes a beautiful mess. And the chipotle may, you can really tell it's chipotle-y. They did a good job.
We ordered a side of Sweet Potato Fries (with ranch). Crinkle cut, excellently crispy. They didn't give us the ranch, but that's ok. A fine side.
And, the milkshake. They have many different options, and I would honestly have happily sucked down any one of them. But I decided on the Crunch Berry option (vanilla ice cream, Crunch Berries). So good. So soft and creamy. Don't even bother with the straw. Get the spoon and dig in. The berries are crunchy at first and get then soggy and flavor the ice cream like cereal milk. So nice.
Overall, if you come to Des Moines, you need to come here. I will leave it at that frank of a statement. An institution of the city.
