The Best Things We Ate This Week

"Dish: El Jefe taco with carne asada en chile de arbol The El Jefe taco at Zona Rosa in the Castro is the most traditional taco on the menu, which is exactly why it's great. You can choose from any of the seven protein options, like carnitas and carne asada, but get the carne asada en chile de arbol for a spicy mess that will slather your mouth with slow-cooked red salsa and a generous amount of lime juice. Each is topped with just cilantro, onion, lime, and salsa, allowing you to appreciate the diced carne asada’s tenderness, and the tortilla is served piping hot—just as it should be. You should get about three (or four if you’re hungry). " - julia chen 1, ricky rodriguez

The 18 Best Restaurants In The Castro

"No one in San Francisco says, “I want Mexican food, let's go to the Castro.” But Zona Rosa has changed that. This casual taqueria stands out for its smoky, slow-cooked meats, seriously spicy salsa, and creamy horchata. Focus on the simple El Jefe tacos, with just onion, cilantro, lime, and a choice of meat. While you could fill yours with chewy carnitas, al pastor, or chorizo, the best options are the carne asada drenched in fiery chile de arbol sauce and the chile verde chicken in a tangy green salsa. The 20 Best Mexican Restaurants In San Francisco

"Zona Rosa is a casual taqueria in the Castro that stands out for its smoky and slow-cooked meats, plus seriously spicy salsa. The interior is small but colorful, with two calavera murals adorning the walls and loud rancheras blaring on speakers. There are no wrong choices, but ordering tacos is the ideal way to go. There are two different styles, but we prefer the El Jefe that’s topped with just cilantro, onion, salsa, and lime. No matter which version you go for, you’ll have a choice of seven meats, but pick the carne asada en chile de arbol for a spicy red salsa journey." - julia chen 1, lani conway, ricky rodriguez

Zona Rosa Mexican Grill - Review - Castro - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"No one in San Francisco says, “I want Mexican food, let's go to the Castro.” The neighborhood’s proximity to the Mission has always meant hungry people book it down 16th Street to eat excellent burritos and tacos. But Zona Rosa, a family-run taqueria in the Castro, is making stewed meats, smoky salsas, and creamy horchata that aren’t just good by neighborhood standards—they’re worth a detour from other parts of the city. Focus on the El Jefe tacos, the simplest and most traditional tacos on the menu, with just onion, cilantro, lime, and a choice of meat. While you could fill yours with chewy carnitas, al pastor, or chorizo, the best options are the carne asada drenched in fiery chile de arbol sauce and the chile verde chicken in a tangy green salsa. These tacos are not nearly as messy as the smothered El Mexicano burrito, but they contain just as much, if not more, smoky flavor. And you can always put out the fire with horchata that has a deep rice-y sweetness you can only get from the homemade stuff. photo credit: Carly Hackbarth photo credit: Carly Hackbarth The rest of the food can be a bit hit-or-miss. Originally opened in the Haight by the owner’s grandparents, Zona Rosa relaunched with a giant menu that seemingly caters to everyone. Purists get straightforward tacos (the right choice), East Coast tourists roam free in search of beans and pico de gallo in a small tortilla (soon they'll see the error of their ways), and San Diego transplants settle for papas locas even if they can’t get their beloved California burritos (we feel for you). With so much range, there are inevitably some flops. Papas locas come with overcooked fries that'll make you wonder why you didn’t trek over to El Farolito, and the kitchen uses sour cream in quantities we did not realize were possible. So stick to the smoky stewed meats, and maybe a quesadilla, and Zona Rosa will be the ideal place to relax with a few friends. Even if it takes some convincing to get your people to eat tacos in the Castro, soon they’ll be the ones convincing their friends to eat Mexican west of Dolores. Whether you demand credit for the idea is up to you. Food Rundown El Jefe Tacos There are three taco options on the menu: the behemoth El Chingon with rice, beans, sour cream, pico de gallo, and guacamole, the El Jefe with cilantro and onion, and veggie. Get the simple El Jefe with the carne asada en chile de arbol and the chile verde for the best of the best, but all of the meats are great. On Tuesdays, they do $3 taco specials, which is nice after trivia at Hi-Tops down the block. photo credit: Carly Hackbarth Super Quesadilla When a few tacos don’t fill you up, get this. It's big, unwieldy, and crispy. Just make sure to eat it quickly before things get soggy. photo credit: Carly Hackbarth Papas Locas They love sour cream here. Nowhere is this more evident than in the papas locas. These overcooked fries are drenched in it to the point that it’s almost comical. Try something else. El Mexicano Burrito Wet burritos are traditionally messy affairs, like sleeping with an ex’s best friend. That’s not a knock, just know what you’re getting yourself into. Zona Rosa serves theirs with salsa verde or mole, but get it half and half because mixing everything together is sometimes just what you need. We'd advise asking for less sour cream, though. Horchata Creamy yet fresh, this horchata is excellent. It’s served in a to-go cup with a long straw—the only acceptable way to drink horchata. The texture is thick enough to have some heft, but not too heavy to be a pain to drink. And most of all, it’s got that deeply rice-y flavor that you can only get when it’s made in house. photo credit: Carly Hackbarth" - Ricky Rodriguez

San Francisco’s New Restaurant Openings - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"You might remember 39-year-old Zona Rosa Mexican Grill on Haight St. (they rebranded to Mi Familia in 2019 until their closure in June 2023). Now, they've landed in the Castro as Zona Rosa once again. The counter-service place is small, with just a few tables and a short menu of burritos, tacos, and bowls to match. " - Ricky Rodriguez

We were just passing, and had a really great tasty happy hour nachos here today after their reopening. Can’t beat it! Plenty of nice clean seating. Really nice service too. Happy Pride! Happy Hour is now on Taco Tuesday.

Went here in passing during happy hour. When I was looking at the sign to see what the happy hour was, Alex took it upon himself to invite me in, instantly making me feel welcomed. He not omly walked me through what the happy hour consisted of, but he also gave his opinion on what his favorite is and was extremely nice. He also takes time, effort and hard work to make sure customers are happy and they feel safe. Alex remembers face and names. The food was great, being that I got one carnitas taco, it was actually pretty great for what it cost (2.50 for happy hour rate). The margarita was 6$ and was definetly worth the price, tasted good but definetly had the right ammount of liquor in it. Nothing about here was dissapointing or offputting. Will be coming back for the Mon-Sun 10am-2pm deals though.

Google
Feb 2025 update: I dont know what happened, but the old experience is no longer. Last two times I ordered from here I got the most mediocre stuffed burrito. Sad.. it’s like there is a meat shortage at this place. —— The food here was fantastic! I got the callejero and it was loaded with delicious steak. Also tried the Al Pastor and Chorizo tacos, which were both tasty as well. The sauces were really great too; the salsa roja packs a punch! Will definitely order again.

Google
I’ve never been disappointed with anything I’ve ordered from here. The staff is super friendly and always remembers me. Plus, it’s a small business, so it’s helping those who matter!

Google
Everything about this restaurant is much better than I expected, the food was amazing, CJ is great, and the overall atmosphere was perfect. I had the "El Chingon" (Super Burrito) for dine in, and it was amazing, super delicious and very filling. I took a Torta to go and that was still very delicious even after being microwaved. Highly recommend bring friends and family for a meal here.

2nd time visiting Zona Rosa on Market St. In San Francisco. Super yummy, we had the Papas Locas that were delicious and filling!

Google
Best food ever! Warm, friendly and welcoming environment. Went there for lunch and got a bang for my buck. We got a chicken and carnitas burrito bowls and a side of guacamole. The food looks and tastes fresh. Definitely going back. Thank you Zona Rosa!

Google
My group was very disappointed with food and service. It took over thirty minutes to receive our food. Food below average. We were excited to try this place but will never return.

Yelp
Every single thing that I have eaten at Zona, Rosa has been absolutely delicious (I have tried everything from their quesadillas to their burritos to their tacos to their special dishes... even the chips are absolutely delicious). Beyond just really good food, what I've enjoyed a lot about going here almost on a weekly basis at this point is getting to know the owners and getting to know the story behind the restaurant. There is something pretty special about the attention to detail that the staff at this restaurant gives every single customer. And it's not just about a couple of times that they've offered a free refill on chips or the way in which I see them treating other customers.... It's making it seem like every time you dine in, you're having a family meal. That is something that is very hard (in my opinion) to replicate within any restaurant's environment. I am very happy that after a short period of time where they were renovating, they've opened back up again! And, one of the newest things that I've been enjoying every week since they reopened is their new margaritas along side street tacos!

Yelp
Food and drinks are great Staff is very friendly and nice Chill spot in the Castro I recommend this spot for casual dining
google avatar

Sonja S.

Yelp
Walked into this establishment to find one of the owners Alex who helped me to make an informed decision. He mentioned it's a family owned restaurant with his grandparents still preparing food. How cool. I will return.
google avatar

Sondra H.

Yelp
I've been here a few times and the food is good. The latest time I was here for an unexpected happy hour. $3 street tacos! Woo hoo! I got 2 carnitas tacos for take out (and a handful of free chips which was nice!) But when I got home and bit into my first savory taco, I see I got the fattiest pieces of meat. I guess this might be wonderful if the fat was soft and melty. But it wasn't. So I had to dissect my food to remove the fatty bits. Bummer.
google avatar

Lisa N.

Yelp
Really wanted to like this place because the service was nice but it's truly just average. Free chips but they were cold and kind of stale. I got the enchilada plate with chicken in mole sauce. The sauce was bland as well as the rice. The refried beans tasted like they came straight out a can. You have to walk through the kitchen if you need to use the restroom which seems a bit unsanitary. Cute little place but subpar food.
google avatar

Jeff H.

Yelp
Very happy Zona Rosa is back open after a short remodel. The En El Mar burrito is outstanding as are the service and the people.
google avatar

Samantha W.

Yelp
walking on market and grabbed a quick bite to eat here. The staff is super helpful and the service was great. I got a regular carnitas quesadilla for $11 that came with chips, water, and salsa for free. They brought everything out to me and cleaned up my table. chill vibe, good food for good prices
google avatar

Yelp
Having recently headed to the Mission District for tacos I was surprised by some of the prices. A small 2-taco order was easily $10 if not more. This made Zona Rosa a slam dunk. I walked by on Taco Tuesday and noticed that street tacos (what they call "Jefe Tacos"; normally $5 apiece) were a very reasonable $3. Opting for a carne asada and an el pastor Jefe Taco I was easily able to assess how these compared to their counterparts recently enjoyed at the Mission's Taqueria Vallarta: * Both el pastor and carne asada taco (meats and fillings) were equivalent in flavor. Both good and enjoyable. * With the Taco Tuesday deal, Zona Rosa tacos are the far better deal ($6 vs $10 for 2). * The tortillas at Taqueria Vallarta are better. Both places use two tortillas per taco. * Now here's where Zona dosa really shines: Though you order at Zona Rosa's counter you're served at your table. The server, who also manned the register, brought chips (free of charge), salsas (in squirt bottles, but good), and iced water. I felt like I was actually serviced and that's not what I found in the Mission (or,for that matter, at very many other places these days). Chances of a Tuesday return to Zona Rosa (which also offers other Taco Tuesday deals) are strong.
google avatar

Adel W.

Yelp
The service and employees go above and beyond! They were super sweet, and there were chips and pico for free! There was too much hot sauce on the tacos I got, and they remade 2 of them for me without the sauce. I wanted to love the food equally as much, but I was a little underwhelmed by the Jefe tacos. The meat was quite dry, and I tried both the carnitas and asada. I felt like everything was a bit lacking in flavor, pico included.
google avatar

Ness S.

Yelp
This is a local restaurant which provides outstanding service. The ambiance is simple but nice. For my meal, I ordered the chicken mole which was a generous portion and came with corn tortillas. The chicken was nice and juicy and the mole was good as well -- I personally like the flavors of the mole to be a little deeper, but that's just a personal preferences. The enchiladas were excellent as well.

Kombatdrew 0.

Yelp
Was walking past during happy hour and stopped to read the sign. Alex was super friendly and invited me in, told me what they had and evem gave his opinion on which was his favorite which was super helpful. I got the 2.50$ taco and the 6$ margartia. The taco was so worth it, as they did not give you minimal servings for the meat and pico. It also came with chips. The margarita was amazing, tasting well but having a good ammount of liquor in it. Between the nice decorations, the energy Alex and the other workers bring and the Happy Hour deals (they also have Mon-Sun 10am-2pm deals that look pretty good) this place is a hidden gem!
google avatar

Jenny W.

Yelp
Not among my favorite tacos for the area. I found the taco overstuffed which sounds like a good thing, but I felt like it made it unbalanced to the rest of the toppings, and made it super hard to eat. I also didn't love the tortilla they use for the tacos. Between the al pastor and the carne asada, I preferred the al pastor, which was juicier and more flavorful.
google avatar

Tj R.

Yelp
Man, oh man, oh man... this place has truly decayed with this new ownership smh. The Previous original owner of zona Rosa CJ which believe me the Castro community is truly saddened that him and his family have left. Had the best Mexican food which I will say IN THE BAY AREA!!!!! I really tried to give this place a chance but it's really like they don't know what they're doing. Service is dreadful, it's like nobody in there what's to work or attend you. Food is flavorless/plain/ DOWNRIGHT DISGUSTING. Came in for this new NOT SO HAPPY hour special. Yeah wow... just wow lol, this place is now a for sure pass. Guac and chips no flavor, nachos just barely okay. Steak had way too much nerve. The whole vibe inside was also super DRY, no vibe at all but to get out and get out quick. Taco girls will have be back
google avatar

Leesa M.

Yelp
Be aware - I noticed today that Zona Rosa is closed for Renovation 'till sometimes in April/May. There's no Phone Number listed for them anywhere I can find.

John G.

Yelp
Best Taco Tuesday The price is great Service fire Ambient is really great I will definitely be cumin back
google avatar

Zolboo N.

Yelp
I had a delicious and hot shrimp burrito from here the other evening. The service was quick, the food was fresh and it was a nice, large portion. I would come back!
google avatar

Tracy R.

Yelp
I remember this place when it was on Haight Street, did not know it was still around. Stumbled across it for a quick bite before a movie at the Castro theater recently. Same delicious salsa and flavors that I remembered. The people in our party ordered burritos and tacos, and everybody liked their food. The burritos are good sized. For a taqueria they actually have good service, it's over the counter and seat yourself, but she actually came and checked on us and brought us water. Not much seating inside and on a cold day it's kind of freezing. But hey, it's a taqueria and most people are getting their food to go. I'll be back.
google avatar

Christi K.

Yelp
I think I found my to-go mexican place! I got the El Chingon burrito $15 (including tax) and it's so affordable as it's huge. It's the classic burrito but tastes like what I want a burrito to taste like! It comes with some pretty good chips (a few were stale) and green and red sauce. Will come back again, plus they have some really good Tuesday $3 deals.
google avatar

Jordan L.

Yelp
Yummy Mexican spot! Saw the reviews and had to try it for ourselves! We both got burritos. I got chicken with refried beans and my husband got shrimp. Both very good! It seems like it'd be a good staple spot - it's nothing absolutely extraordinary, but it's very good and the staff are so so nice and helpful! Also the burrito was huge! My husband finished his, but I will certainly be eating my other half for lunch tomorrow. We also loved that we were able to watch the NFL game while we ate. Parking was easy for us on the street in front (7 pm on a Monday). I would totally come back if I was in the neighborhood!
google avatar

Joey C.

Yelp
Ask for the El Chingón or En El Mar in El Dorado style (toasted). It's the best! Well made, always warm/hot with ample of meat and always hit the spot, unlike the other places I get a cold burrito when I bring them home. The El Dorado Style makes all the difference. And it's not too watery either. Perfect burrito, that's why we keep coming back.
google avatar

Ezekiel G.

Yelp
I just loooove this place so much!! I've been there a few times now since they opened and I've tried El Jefe tacos, which come with meat, cilantro, onions, and salsa, and I am not lying to you when I say these are the best tacos I've had in San Francisco. These tacos are almost like the tacos I'd eat every night in Mexico. Just authentic, simple flavors. I've also had the regular burrito, the regular quesadilla and the guacamole and chips. Everything is delicious! And the folks working there are so nice, too! And I love that whenever I go they have some good music playing. Some rancheras that make the experience even better. I can't wait until they are allowed to sell beer, because a corona with those tacos would be heaven.

Yelp
Love this place. As a regular visitor to CDMX, coming to zona rosa here in SF helps me satisfy my taco cravings until my next CDMX trip. Definitely authentic Mexican taste! Deliciosa!
google avatar

Foodie Monster X.

Yelp
Casual neighborhood taqueria with fresh, flavorful ingredients. They're friendly and sometimes offer little freebies. They even have some healthier options (e.g., the el jefe tacos). Recommended!
google avatar

Andy W.

Yelp
This will be a short review--go! Sampled only one thing, a massive El Chingano burrito. The burrito is impressive in size, heft, and taste. My al pastor was appropriately smokey. I was almost able to eat it at one sitting. My companion had the same but with carne asada. She now has a second meal and all for $15 each. We ate in so we got a basket of good, crispy chips, which was accompanied by a green or red salsa. While there are many Mexican food choices in the neighborhood and right on the same block, this is an exception place. Simple, fast, delicious.
google avatar

Christina E.

Yelp
This place is AMAZING. Coming from two Texans, we can confirm this is THE PLACE to get enchiladas and a beer. You get to pick the sauce (green or red), the beans, and the fillings. I recommend the carne asada and pollo asado. Quick, friendly service is the cherry on top.
google avatar

Vivian C.

Yelp
Massive and delicious burritos- need I say more? I came in here on a Saturday night and surprisingly it was fairly quiet. I ordered the El Chignon with all the fixings inside. The meat was cooked perfectly and was large enough to split among two meals. It also came with a side of fresh tortilla chips. Shout out to the gentleman at the cash register who was super friendly and offered me different salsas for my burritos and chips. Come swing by for the awesome food, beautiful artwork, and stellar service!
google avatar

Christian C.

Yelp
I ordered two tacos, one carnitas, one carne asada. The tacos are bit more expensive than a street taco but also bigger. I would say get two if you are not feeling super hungry and three if you are starving. All the flavors were on point. Service was friendly. My only gripe is that I wish the carne asada and carnitas had crispier bits in them as I felt like, overall, it was lacking in the texture department. I definitely like this better than the last place that was there and plan to return.
google avatar

Miss F.

Yelp
My go to for Taco Tuesday magic! I love these folks and this place. $3 each for freshly made to order tacos with double tortillas. They always offer chips no matter what you order. I'm trying to convince them to open for breakfast, hey the gym is three doors down so it wouldn't be that dangerous..;)
google avatar

Arturo N.

Yelp
Went in for taco Tuesday. Ordered one taco of asada and one of Al pastor. After I sat and waited for food it was maybe only one minute and they communicated right away they ran out of asada and tried to comp me a different taco. I just asked for both with Al pastor. I would recommend for you to go early so you get exactly what you need. Great portion size are price and salsas were great and spicy.

Robert S.

Yelp
This used to be a great place, not sure what happened. Prices went higher, quality went lower. Jimboy's is way better than this place.
google avatar

Ricky Ricardo P.

Yelp
Delicious and probably one of the most authentic Mexican restaurants in SF when it comes to flavors. Try El Chingon burrito. You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Michelle G.

Yelp
Not sure why, but our pics & descriptions didn't make it onto Yelp. So- trying again. The pics section only shows 16 photos. What happened to the pics we posted? Doesn't make any sense?
google avatar

Kyle D.

Yelp
The food is great and the family that runs it is awesome! I used to frequent their old location on Haight and they don't disappoint.
google avatar

Bob H.

Yelp
Finally the Castro got what the Castro needed, AMAZING MEXICAN FOOD!! Food is delicious and hearty. Service is great and everyone, kitchen and front of house are all friendly. I cannot speak well enough of Zona Rosa. I haven't hit them for Taco Tuesday but I will!
google avatar

Simon The Cat -.

Yelp
Mi Familia the great taqueria that was on Haight St. for 30 plus years. Has moved to Marker St. and is using their original name Zona Rosa. The food was great when they were on Haight. It's still great at there new location. Same owners, same the wonderful family. Same delicious authentic home-cooked, Mexican food. I am so glad that I found your new location. It's great to see you guys again. Your new location is really nice and colorful. The huge TV is fantastic. If you live in the Castro give Zona Rosa a try. You will not be disappointed. The food is excellent! Good Luck at your new location and see you again soon

Mark H.

Yelp
I went here yesterday for a bite to eat for lunch and the food was really good. I had chicken fajitas which included guacamole, sour cream, a choice of beans, tortillas, pico, and all excellent. My best friend had a Carne Asada enchilada plate and she loved his plate as well. He thought it was the best enchiladas outside Texas. Only downside is that they don't have hot water or hot coffee or anything with hot water for that matter and that's the downside of this particular restaurant When you walk in, you have to order food like a hamburger, but you sit down and they bring you the food when it's ready
google avatar

King T.

Yelp
Love my folks at Zona Rosa! Haven't been to the new location on Market, loved them my entire life on Haight! I'll be in to the new location soon!
google avatar

Roberto K.

Yelp
This is a family owned business. It's a great place and the food was awesome. The 5 of us ordered carnitas quisadilla, chicken/asada enchiladas, el chingon al pastor burrito, el chingon pollo asada burrito and el chingon carne asada burrito. We came here Saturday around noon time for lunch. We were seated right away and food came quickly. Alex goes out of the way to make sure everything was ok. We found a parking spot in a lot behind Walgreen on 18th st between Castro and Collingswood.

Max S.

Yelp
Ooof...pretty terrible Mexican food. Feels a bit like microwaveable food. Service was good, but I would avoid it altogether given how many better Mexican restaurants there are in SF. AVOID AVOID AVOID.

Byron H.

Yelp
The carne asada burrito dint even have meat it so chopped up mixed with all the beans and sour cream
google avatar

Jimmy P.

Yelp
The chile verde chicken taco was good. I found the other tacos to be ok but some of them are a little salty. Really good Smokey salsa on the table.
google avatar

Anthony N.

Yelp
Lots of Mexican around, but this one still stands out. Tastes very fresh. Friendly staff.
google avatar

Brian T.

Yelp
Absolutely loved the tacos! Thank you for making me the veggie for taco Tuesday, the horchata was bomb and amazing salsa.

Santiago R.

Yelp
As a Mexican, I'm picky about Mexican food, but Zona Rosa won me over. Their authentic flavors remind me of home, and the food is delicious and reasonably priced. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Victor O.

Yelp
This place is a fantastic addition to the Castro all around! I had a jefe taco with carnitas and a vegetarian taco, and both were delicious. The portions were generous and came with pickled carrots and radishes. Tasty green and red sauce on the table and complementary chips. It is very clean and nicely decorated inside and the person working the register was very nice and friendly. This taqueria is definitely way beyond the ordinary!
google avatar

Xue H.

Yelp
tried the jefe tacos on taco tuesday. just really dry...and too salty and i love salt. tried every meat. if you add your own avo n sour cream which i did at home, it helped a bit

Greg C.

Yelp
This is the best Mexican in the Castro. Family owned. They have amazing guacamole, salsas, and the best pollo verde in town--made by JR's grandmother. We love this place and eat here at least twice a week.

Mark P.

Yelp
Finally got to try out. Had the deluxe burrito (forget the menu name) w/ carnitas. A very good burrito and meat. The very tasty tortilla got my attention too! Maybe home made? Will be back.
