Yelp
We kept hearing about this place and finally gave it a shot.
Let's start here. This is the best pizza I have found in Richmond. It is not the best in the world or anything, and most Richmond pizza is garbage, so the bar is not that high. But Zorch is very good--especially when you consider it is primarily a slice shop requiring the pizza to be reheated when ordered.
It's a little confusing though. When you come in, there is no indication of whether to sit down, order at the bar, wait for someone, etc. The stoner bartender (who looks like Ron Jeremy's baked younger brother) just stands their slack-jawed and disinterested. Finally we go up to him and he takes our order--one cheese slice and one pepperoni slice.
We want drinks of course, but I can't have alcohol and my wife is not looking for booze. That limits us apparently to Mexican Coke, Mexican Sprite or Richmond city tap water. Since the latter may be safe to drink but certainly doesn't taste like it, I opt for a Mexican Coke, but I really wanted a diet soda. This is another restaurant that thinks everyone wants beer and booze, and short changes the rest of us.
We sit down and the slices come out. They are very good. The crust has good structure but is foldable. The cheese is generous and tastes fresher than the usual food-service bend. The pepperoni is the cupping variety--which tastes great but will almost always leave grease dripping from the slice on to you. Good size although a little steep in price. I want to say it was over $5 a slice although the website says it was $4.50 for the pepperoni and $4.15 for the cheese. It is 1/6th of an 18" pie. A whole cheese pie is $21.75 which strikes me as a little high. For comparison, Belmont Pizza (which a lot of people rave about but I loathe) is $16 for a cheese that size.
Seating is limited and it can get crowded in there. Come for the pizza, not for the service.
