Hits and misses with the food. Chilled crabs, teochew deep fried tofu, oyster omelette, salted egg prawns are good. Pork trotters jelly, mee suah, chicken etc are mediocre. Steamed fish pomfret is unacceptable. Staff did tell us in advance that it is frozen, as all pomfrets are. You don’t find pomfret swimming in fish tanks at seafood restaurant. But this steam pomfret has a weird taste in a bad way.
Beware that when you ask staff for signature dishes they only recommend the expensive items like crab, sea cucumber etc. That is all fine but it’s rather disappointing that they are not able to introduce Teochew dishes. Even for tea, staff was telling us about pu’er, chrysanthemum common teas. Hence we ordered from pu’er. It was not until our Teochew friend arrived that she asked why we did not have Teochew tea and deep fried tofu, all the signature Teochew dishes. To be fair, staff do serve with good attitude.
Zui, should not lose sight of what sets it apart from other Chinese restaurant. It is first a Teochew restaurant before anything else.
It is one of the more reasonably priced private room Chinese restaurants. We would still recommend it for those looking for private room. Order dishes with discern. Do your homework on teochew dishes before ordering.
