Northwest Portland Mediterranean Restaurant Zula Has Closed | Eater Portland

"I learned that Mediterranean bistro Zula closed its doors permanently on Sunday, October 20. The restaurant, which opened in March 2023, served dishes such as ras el hanout lamb osso bucco, seared halloumi, and chicken with caponata and fregola. Within its first year it shifted from counter service to a full-service model, and this summer William Wells, formerly of Tusk and Cicoria, was appointed as its executive chef. A closing announcement on Instagram thanked staff, saying, “We want to thank Zula’s incredibly devoted and passionate staff - you are the heart of what made Zula so special.”" - Janey Wong

TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!!! I should have went with my gut feeling. After calling the place serval times for a call in order and not getting an answer I ordered ahead via Doordash. I was notified 10 mins later that my food was ready and (veggie combo). At arrival of the restaurant It took 10 minutes for the cook to realize I was inside of the establishment. She assured that my order was recieved but not ready. The kitchen door was open but there were no pots on the stove and the microwave was running. I went outside to let my ride know it would be a minute as I was coming through the door I saw the cook plating my food from storage containers assuming from the microwave. As she presented my food I let her know I saw that she was serving me left overs. I opened my togo box and felt the temperature of my food the injera itself was ICE COLD!!! I then inserted my finger in the middle and yeh temperature of my food was like warm and immediately requested a refund in which I received. Disappointed for sure, but the server at least acknowledged the fact that she indeed served me left over food that was just warmed up and did not argue the fact. Extremely disappointed I will not return or recommend.

Very nice relaxed and classy atmosphere. The authentic ethiopian food is great and very filling. I have heard the weekend night time vibes can be alot of fun, will return and report back. I enjoyed the jazz music playing while we ate lunch.

On vacation and decided to give Zula a try. Neither of us have much experience with Ethiopian and the staff was very helpful, did a great job explaining the menu and making sure we were ok with “spicy” before we ordered. The food was very flavorful and would absolutely come again.

My favorite spot nearby. The tibs are amazing and their fusion of a bolognese with Eritrean/Ethiopian spices is to die for. The entire staff is friendly and great. A nice little neighborhood bar and restaurant for just chilling out in. And downstairs they have hookah. Really nothing close by that has this vibe and I am so glad they're here!

I came for lunch with a friend one day. There was open seating and we got serviced immediately. The customer service was amazing and the food is even better. It was great experiencing a new culture. I will definitely come back.

Yelp
Came on a Friday. Around 6 ish. Everyone was friendly. I tried a lamb dish. It was good. My only critic was that I ordered white wine, Stella rose red wine and a green tea shot and was charged 30$ ...definitely was overcharged.
