"This cosy restaurant is divided into four traditionally decorated rooms – in one of them, gentle piano music provides the soundtrack to your evening meal. Delicious Austrian cuisine is the order of the day, including house specialities such as "Rauchfangkehrers Wiener Schnitzel". The wine list is exclusively Austrian and organised according to grape variety." - Michelin Inspector

Came here for a birthday dinner with my wife before a Mozart concert and it couldn’t have been better. The venison was outstanding. The pig neck was rich, tender, and unforgettable. The real moment, though, was when Mátyás and the staff somehow knew it was her birthday and surprised us with candles, a heartfelt Happy Birthday, and the Knöckerl dessert. Pure class. Elegant atmosphere, thoughtful service, and true attention to detail. A place that understands hospitality. Five stars, without hesitation.

Alright, here’s a bit more substance without going overboard: ⸻ We discovered Zum weißen Rauchfangkehrer by accident, and it turned out to be one of those great travel surprises. The atmosphere is cozy, the service genuinely warm, and everything we ordered was really well made. We enjoyed our first meal so much that we came back the next day for lunch. The schnitzels were crisp and flavorful, and the Kaiserschmarrn was also very good — light, caramelized, and exactly the kind of dessert you hope to find in Vienna. Overall, a charming spot with very good food and friendly people. We’d happily return.

Google
Lovely experience at Zum Weiven. The schnitzel was very good, and the chicken with chestnut was excellent as well. The mushroom soup was especially delicious. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, making it a great place to enjoy a relaxed meal. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and would happily return.

Google
Outstanding food, service, atmosphere. This restaurant sets a standard. We dined here Nov 4th, and were most impressed by the genuine staff. We don't recall our server's name, a tall blond, very accommodating, and well acquainted with wine. He recommended the cranberry sauce on veal schnitzel, and all I can say is, when you book your table, make sure you order the veal schnitzel with cranberry sauce. Yum. In addition, we tried the pepper soup, beef tartare, and venison, and all were equally fantastic. Before and after our meal, we were treated to samples from the kitchen including beet soup and truffles. It truly is the little things. You won't be rushed out; savor your meal to live piano music in a warm and charming space. Don't miss out on this experience and don't hum and haw over lower ratings. This is by and far a five star restaurant with excellent food and customer service.

Returning to Zum Weißen Rauchfangkehrer on our third visit to Vienna felt less like dining out and more like coming home to a living chapter of Austrian culinary history, which founded in 1848, as this remarkable house stands as one of Vienna’s most enduring guardians of authentic Austrian cuisine where tradition is not preserved behind glass, but lived, cooked, and savored daily. From the moment you step inside, the atmosphere speaks quietly yet confidently. There is an inimitable warmth shaped by centuries of stories once frequented by chimney sweeps who were anything but selective eaters, often wandering in from the neighboring bakery, drawn by honest food and generous hospitality. That same spirit still defines the restaurant today, enriched by a beautifully stocked cellar and a philosophy rooted in organic ingredients and sustainable cuisine, a commitment rightly acknowledged by the Michelin Guide 2025. Our culinary journey began with the sweet potato soup, smooth and comforting, offering depth without heaviness. The cream of mushroom soup followed earthy, refined, and perfectly balanced, a testament to how simplicity, when executed with care, becomes elegance. The centerpiece was the legendary Rauchfangkehrer’s Viennese veal Schnitzel nothing short of exemplary. Golden, impossibly light, and masterfully prepared, it embodied everything a true Wiener Schnitzel should be, crisp, tender, and utterly timeless. Equally impressive was the creamy emmer grain, paired with green Hokkaido pumpkin, spinach, and Bleu de Brebis cheese. This dish stood as a contemporary expression of Austrian cuisine thoughtful, sustainable, and deeply satisfying, bridging tradition with modern culinary sensibility. Zum Weißen Rauchfangkehrer is not merely one of Vienna’s best Austrian restaurants. it is a cultural institution. A place where history, sustainability, and culinary excellence converge effortlessly. With each visit, it reaffirms why some traditions don’t fade, they evolve, gracefully, and continue to set the standard. A restaurant that doesn’t just serve food, but serves Vienna itself !

Google
I had a really great experience. The food was great the service was friendly and quick. The restaurant is divided into sections and every section has booths groups can enjoy a bit of a secluded area. In one of the sections there is a piano, accompanying with your dinner. They have all Austrian wine list and help with the choice. The service starts with salty pumpkin seeds and and with sweetened pumpkin seeds- a nice touch. You also receive some small taste-size dishes with the compliments from the kitchen. It is central and with great traditional Austrian food. All in all definetely worth a visit.

Google
We were treated so nicely here — like regulars from the moment we walked in! I truly applaud the service staff for being incredibly friendly, warm, and attentive. This was one of the best service experiences of my life. The food was fresh, beautifully presented, and full of authentic Viennese charm and elegance. The restaurant is spotless, with very clean toilets as well. Thank you for making a tourist feel so genuinely welcomed — an unforgettable experience at Zum weißen Rauchfangkehrer!

Google
Everything from A to Z was perfect. Our waiter, Martin Kulmhofer, was friendly, welcoming and so funny, we had the best time. He helped us with the menu and took time for recommendations. The hors d’oeuvre with freshly baked bread was a gread start! Dinner was wonderful, we had the paprika soup (4/5), the carpaccio (5/5), the Schnitzel (5/5) and the Topfennockerl (5/5). And the best was, everything was accompanied by live piano music. Will definitely come back again!

Yelp
Gayle and I returned here last month for Lunch and our portion of Vienna Schnitzel. It had been several years since we last visited, but it was still relatively easy to find off one of the main pedestrian streets. Look, feel, ambiance, service were all what we remembered and enjoyed.
google avatar

Patrick W.

Yelp
An enjoyable experience of good food and ambience, minus additional charges which I wasn't aware of. One less star for that. Be wary if served bread without ordering, and water is not free (more for American readers).
google avatar

Jennifer R.

Yelp
Quaint Austrian restaurant with traditional dishes on a side cobbled street. Choose the piano room. Servers were polite and formal Austrian country dress. Carpaccio was delicious and the pork neck was the best choice. One of us had schnitzel and it was veal so very succulent. This place makes one want to sit in the warmth of Vienna forever. Recommend!

Yelp
I am visiting from Los Angeles and I loved Zum Weiben Rauchfangkehrer! The ambiance is so unique and beautiful! The service is amazing great waitors & waitresses! and the food absolutely delicious! I have the veil shnitzel with potato salad & the cheese soup it was so good! I will be back! thank you!

Yelp
Quite an authentic Austrian restaurant. There were many local dishes to choose from. Our family tried quite a few dishes, including their schnitzel. All were excellent, and the staff was very friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
Upscale neighbor restaurant without the upscale price! What an incredible find as we were strolling through the streets of Vienna. I must say that Zum weißen Rauchfangkehrer delivered on authentic Austrian flavor. Plus the portions were very generous! I recommend that you come hungry. The service was great! The venue/atmosphere was cozy and warm. I recommend you give them a try.
google avatar

Jeri L.

Yelp
A Michelin Star restaurant that features unique Austrian fare with excellent service, our waiter worked at Daniel in NYC! The food is farm to table and you can taste the difference. Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious! A must try when you are in Vienna

Yelp
If you're looking for local fare with good atmosphere then the white chimney sweep is for you. Recommended by our hotel concierge, a short walk took us to this little treasure. We absolutely loved the traditional service costumes worn by the staff. We were warmly greeted and seated. The menu had traditional dishes, we tried 3, which we shared. Of the three we could not choose one we preferred. Nice touch, roasted pumpkin seeds and toothpicks, followed by 4 types of bread. Meal portions were adequate. We are not big meat eaters so our assessment of the rich veal was moderate. I would recommend based on the location and good atmosphere, the food was rich but ok.

Yelp
This upscale restaurant caught my eye upon arrival to Vienna for vacation as it was near my hotel just a block away from it all. The first time I tried to walk in, I was turned away due to the restaurant being fully booked. This only made me more determined so I proceeded to make a reservation through their website. After another initial rejection, the third time was a charm. The online booking simple is simple and convenient. Despite making a reservation for a group of four, I was disappointed in the seats that we dined at. We had a corner booth that was extremely tight. Two individuals in my party had mild panic attacks from claustrophobia which dampened the excitement of our reservation. The staff overall were very friendly and the menu consists of traditional Austraian meals with an emphasis on sourcing the ingredients substanably. My dinner consisted of the Monk fish with a local lager as my beverage. I believe the brewery was Größer. I was very satisfied with the quality of the ingredients and the restaurant took its mission about sustainable fresh ingredients seriously and delivered on its promise. If you want a upscale night on the town in a intimate restaurant with an intriguing interior, consider Zum weißen Rauchfangkehrer aka To the White Chimeysweep! Had it not been for the less than ideal booth location that looked to have been a last minute seating addition to the floor plan, I would easily given five stars!

Yelp
This is a michellin star restaurant but very affordable. Every item in their menu from appetizer to main course are perfectly crafted. The restaurant serves authentic austrian food. The staff is amazing

Yelp
Wonderful meal and service in Vienna! Weeks later and the veal patties (highly recommend) are still top of mind! Beautiful interior and incredible wine selection! Go hungry and thirsty! Make a res for the piano room!

Yelp
Very traditional Austrian style. The schnitzel was amazing! And the waiters we super friendly.

Yelp
Good customer service, authentic food and great ambiance. I definitely recommend this place.

Yelp
This used to be my favorite place in Vienna, but bad service and terrible management attitude has turned this place into just an average place with below average service. We had two servers helping us and neither one could figure out or remember what we ordered. This is why you need to WRITE DOWN what people order. They brought us the wrong meals, wrong drinks and then never apologized for either mistake. Then we had to wait 20-30 minutes just to get refills on water. I could understand if busy, but the place had not yet filled up. There are far too many Viennese restaurants to choose from and this place simply does does not deserve my business any longer. They also now enforce a two hour time limit, which is ridiculous when the service staff it horribly slow and clueless. Will not return.

Yelp
Amazing amazing food, ambiance, service for a romantic dinner date. Had a wonderful time. Highly recommend. We had the semolina soup and braised pork + Austrian gnocchi

Patrick B.

Yelp
Amazing restaurant! The food is absolutely delicious and the staff is incredibly friendly. The interior is also really awesome as we sat in this covered booth. If I'm ever back in Vienna, this will be stop #1. Highly recommend, you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Writing this review not even fifteen minutes after leaving this restaurant. Bottom line, decent food, terrible experience, would not recommend. My friend and I had a long layover, so decided to come downtown for a traditional lunch and we're excited to find this restaurant! We walked in, and were guided to our table, where we hung up our coats and small carry ons (See pictures). After some pointing by the staff, a member came over and asked us to move our coats and bags to two other coat hooks next to our table, which we happily did. However, we noticed more pointing and staring in our direction by members of the staff and an older woman, who we assumed to be the owner or manager. All very confusing. This was all happening while only two other tables were filled in our room at the restaurant, and we counted 32 open coat hooks. We still had not complained, or said anything. Separately, my friend ordered the house aperitivo, and it came less than half full, and looked like it had been sloshed around or spilled (see picture). Yet, we still didn't say anything. We both ordered the pork schnitzel, which I definitely had, but my friend's looked totally different from mine - different texture, breading, and darker meat. She was happy to eat it, but just wanted to let them know that they had brought the wrong schnitzel. They were adamant that they did not, despite the two looking completely different. We still didn't even make this an issue. The final straw was when we were getting up to leave, members of the staff again were pointing at us and our coats from around the corner. At this point, we were frustrated at being pointed at during the entire course of our meal, so we went up to the staff and asked if there was a problem, to which they told us no, and to not worry about it. The entire experience was very uncomfortable and made us feel like a burden to the restaurant, so we do not recommend coming here. Together we had two coats and two bags, one of each per person, none of which were blocking the empty table behind us. We were dressed nice, in skirts and sweaters. So just can't figure out what about us was so offensive to the staff that they pointed at us so much. Stay away.

Yelp
Wonderful atmosphere; excellent food; variety of choices. Beautiful view of cathedral.

Yelp
If you're ever in Vienna, which I can't express enough what a great city it is, you definitely need to come to ZWR. Its one of the city's recommended local cuisine restaurants that I was fortunate to be within a 5 - 10 minute walk. I had reservations for a party of 4 + 13 mo. child. They were very accommodating to locate us a great table and service was prompt, friendly and informative. Overall ambience was quite Austrian warm and rustic that you pass through various rooms that had its own unique theme. Of course since it was my first night here i had to have the obligatory Schnitzel. Get the pork version, anything else is for the tourists or the uninformed. The complimentary bread comes with butter and their version of liver spread, so yummy. Also definitely order their version of charcuterie. Very good high quality meats and pickled items. It was a great dining experience and adds to what a great city Vienna is.

Yelp
Absolutely the best dinning experience that we had in Vienna. From the breads to the special from the kitchen while we waited for our food. The staff was spectacular. Polite, knowledgeable, and made us feel welcome. The restaurant was immaculate. The food was well worth it. Loved this place.

Yelp
Excellent, traditional Austrian food! Great story and history to this restaurant. Great fun and even better service and environment!

Andrea R.

Yelp
This a cute cozy lovely restaurant. We loved every minute. The food was delicious. They have an excellent wine list. And lots of wines to taste by the glass. We were in the piano room and highly recommend it. Soft piano music was played for the entire 2 hours of our meal. The service was excellent. If you are in Vienna you must go to this restaurant!
google avatar

Yelp
Wide variety of well prepared Austrian dishes that take you past the touristic repetition of schnitzel after schnitzel (though those are available with a nice berry sauce). Meal served with four types of bread and butter. Bread was so fresh and had a wonderfully crisp crust that was pretty addictive to eat! Entrees are anywhere from 15 - 30 Euro, though averages fall around 21-25. They were so gracious and also served a nice consumme as an amuse for us! Server was so warm and kind. Didn't look down on us at all for not speaking any more German than "bitte" and "danke." Felt very welcome the entire time. Would definitely recommend to someone looking for a nice calm and (relatively) quiet meal with excellent food preparation and service.

Yelp
What an elegant place! We were looking for special Salsburg desert and found this place close to out hotel. Life piano music adds a lot to the ambient of wood paneled walls. Great service.
google avatar

Jeff R.

Yelp
It was good enough. Beautiful atmosphere, and everything was cooked nicely. I personally wasn't that satisfied with my meal and would not come back, but that's just me. If it's your first time, this place is as good as any and probably above average. My chicken dish was all dark meat, a leg and a thigh. I would have preferred a breast to go with it but that's that. The sauce was good. Our companion said she loved the pumpkin soup. The Wienerschnitzel was average compared to what I've tried on my trip. This is a pleasant place to come. Reasonable prices, good food, but not great. If you're going to Salzburg, the Blue Goose restaurant is the best in town - and we tried a lot. Generally the oldest places were novel, but food was often terrible.

Yelp
Happened upon this place by chance, while walking around the main area in central Vienna... and, what a stroke of luck! I suppose I was drawn in by the charm - which simply exuded from the place and spilled out on to the sidewalk. Once seated, I was delighted to read, on the back of the menu, I had stumbled upon one of the little local treaures - filled to overflowing with history and fine, special touches. I'm told the menu changes daily, so our choices may be of little assistance. The pumpkin seeds (prepared two ways), and the breads and butter - are fantastic. Had the lamb, and the risotto; ad was told the potato soup was extra-ordinary - everything was delicious. And, Fine. Yes, this is the word for this place. Extra care goes into everything. And the service is gracious and among the very best. The apple strudel was not exactly what I was expecting, but I'm told, it's the way it's been made here for decades (so, I'm misled by how it's done elsewhere in the world). Oh, by the way, the bier is great, too. If I get a chance, I'd love to return here.

Yelp
Wonderful traditional Austrian food, which included a delicious Vegetarian dish for my wife. The taste, ingredients and presentation were superb. The service is implacable and friendly. I ask for a glass of Cabernet or Merlot and not being familiar with the local wines, our waiter recommended the 2006 von Alterberg by Franz Sommer which was an excellent choice. Great atmosphere with the front being a little more casual and charming and the back, were we were seated, was a little more elegant but warm with dark panel wood and a romantic live soft piano. The host was very friendly and immediately makes you feel welcome and at home. Highly recommended!

Yelp
The schnitzel is very good here. As is the apple strudel. The atmosphere here is welcoming aa great place to eat. Many different kinds of schnapps.

Yelp
We started which a smoked fish appetizer complements of the house , it was fantastic . Our second course was soup, one pumpkin and one sauerkraut, both were equally wonderful. We almost ordered more soup because it was so delicious but instead had the venison stew with cranberry sauce on the side. I can't say how delicious this meal was and the excellent service matched the food. A must try in Vienna .
google avatar

Lou B.

Yelp
The service was exemplary and the dinners were delicious. This was a very authentic Austrian establishment and is not to be missed. Piano music accompanied our dinner and while finishing an excellent bottle of Sanka Laurent Tyrolian red wine, we asked to be moved closer to the pianist and were instantly accommodated. Thank you to Mathais for making our evening memorable.

Yelp
Authentic Vienna type food, very very good. Great service ....serviced is a little Vienna local type restaurant, the place inside seems like your on a mountaintop in the hills of Austria... Enjoy

Yelp
We had such a wonderful lunch here. We had the breadcrumb pork and the filled papers and they were delicious! The staff were very friendly and the atmosphere relaxed. Do not miss this!

Yelp
We LOVED this restaurant!!!!! The atmosphere was so cozy and quaint! The food was amazing, everything from the compimentary pumpkin seeds, to the 4 different kinds of bread, to the goulash, to the dessert. Great wine list also. And to top it off we had the all time best server that i EVER had - Martin!

Yelp
Spent a couple of days in Vienna and we loved this restaurant from ambiance, to the food and the service. We ordered the sausage (Wildleberkäse), noodles (Viennese "Krautfleckerl") and pork cheeks based on our server's recommendation. In the end we had the warm apple strudel with sour cream ice cream and everything was super delicious. Their choice of breads was also excellent. The clientele was mostly tourists but would still highly recommend. We got there early and got a great table. The place got very crowded soon after we sat so I'd recommend to get there early. In the next room they had a piano player so if possible would recommend sitting there for an enhanced experience.

Yelp
Wonderful food and some of the friendliest service anywhere! Trout was not over cooked, and neither was the beef. Worthy every Euro paid for dinner here.
google avatar

Fazel M.

Yelp
Spiro was very nice to explain all the specialties. He has a great sense of humor. He recommended us what to eat after explaining the me menu.

Yelp
This is one of the very best restaurants we've ever found while traveling. My wife and daughters truly enjoyed the best Schnitzel they've ever had, my soup and pork were amazing and we wish we could have gone back for a 2d visit. Take the time to try and get a table here but they fill up quickly. You will not be disappointed by the menu and ambience.

Yelp
My wife, son and I had the pleasure of dining at Zum weissen Rauchfangkehrer during a trip to Vienna in May, 2017. While reservations are preferred, we were able to dine early one evening as a walk in. All three of us had the Wienerschnitzel , which my son said was the best he had in Vienna. I must say that the potato salad and beer was pretty good too! If you have time, and are on the back streets of Vienna close to St. Stephen's Cathedral, stop in for diner and a beer.

Jose Y.

Yelp
Incredible nice restaurant in Prague. Very cozy, nice and with delicious food. A little pricy but it is completely with it!! Don't miss he chance to stop by if you want to try real traditional Czech food!
google avatar

Yelp
Lovely atmosphere, good B to B+ food, and friendly attentive service. Seems too expensive for the quality of the dishes; we had more delicious food at local biesls.

Yelp
We stumbled into this place as we wandered around Vienna without a plan or direction. It looked really nice from the outside, but Yelp indicated 3€, which wasn't bad. So we decided to give it a try. As a large group with a proclivity for sharing, we had a chance to sample things like duck breast, wild boar, chestnut soup, veal, beef tartare and beef patties (meatballs really.) The food was marvelous, worthy of the foodie experience we expected on our cruise (which disappointed us somewhat.) Although it is not cheap, the quality is definitely at a fantastic value point. The service was attentive, right down to the fraulein who spent her summers in California (no accent at all). The decor reflects the same attention to detail found in the food. This place is so good, the next time we travel the 8000 miles to be in this ageless city, we will seek it out again.

Yelp
Viennese restaurant just off karsenstrasse ( first left after Forever 21). Look for statue of the white chimneysweeper. Inteeesting place. They opened the back dining room for us even if it was closed. Our server Paul, was attentive without being overbearing. Food was hot and you could hear the crust of the schnitzel still crackling when served. Savory pumpkin seeds st the start and sweet pimpkin seeds afrer the meal were a great touch. Pricey.

Yelp
This was a very nice restaurant - with a good view of the famous St. Stephen cathedral. What a warm welcome! Food was great and the options included traditional Austrian dishes and also some for vegetarians. The hosts were absolutely fantastic. They even made us try some of their delicious Schnapps - the hazelnut/hazelnuzz was really good!

Yelp
This review is from October 31, 2016 Took recommendation from hotel concierge, without looking at reviews however, the glowing reviews would have misdirected us too. We were very unhappy. Keep in mind there are three rooms to this place, increasingly better as you progress. We were seated in the front room, tiny, noisy knotty pine walls and ceiling a-la-1955 basement game room. It was hot and the wood magnified the noise of the 12-14 member Japanese tour group. We were off in a corner and, much unlike anyplace else in Europe over three weeks, it was painfully obvious they planned on turning the table. They brought bread and tapas-like apps without asking, for which there was a charge. We each has Scnitzel, dry and shoe-leathery, tasteless. German potato salad came with it. The waitress attempted to take my plate three times before I yelled at her to let me eat. We passed on coffee and desert just to get out of there. Upon leaving I found the restrooms to be clean and above average for our European experience. I also found two additional dining rooms, each nicer than the other. Had we been seated in either we would have had a nicer experience. My recommendation, other than avoiding this tourist trap, if you simply must go there because of good reviews or recommendation, is to refuse to sit in the first room and sit in the back. Perhaps ask the waitress, should she have the time, what some of the other dishes really are and you might avoid disappointment.

Yelp
Great, traditional Austrian restaurant with super service. I suggest you try the Rauchfangkehrer Pfandl which is a selection of meat that is just amazing. All was cooked to perfection and very moist. Service is quick and good. The restaurant itself also features a nice traditional Austrian decor. If you still have room for a dessert try the Kaiserschmarrn.

Yelp
Was so lovely! Beautiful ambiance and a piano player in the back room of this cozy restaurant. Pumpkin soup and parsley soup, pork schnitzel, and char fish over vegetables, and wine tastings. I'm practically cooing.

Hongsheng Z.

Yelp
A nice restaurant. When we arrived here after seeing an opera it's already 10:30 pm.there was only one guy in the kitchen. We could only order some main courses. But the schnitzel and mushroom didn't disappoint us. Food,atmosphere,music,services....everything is fine. We enjoyed here.

Yelp
Really great meal. Nice intimate setting, excellent service. I tried the set menu: carpaccio trio, tafelspitz (had a unique horseradish "crust"), apricot dessert. All were fantastic and unique. Very deep, subtle flavors. The bread is fantastic, and theyy have "signature" pumpkin seeds that really are unique and tasty. Bottom line: Definitely recommend.

Yelp
Best Salzburger nockerl in town according to our expert(who is also a food critic in disguise, no kidding) and also a very good variety of appetizers. The piano music was a nice touch...
