YOKOI

"Dreaming of following in the footsteps of his sushi chef father, the chef moved to Kyoto to learn the basics of Japanese cuisine. The welcome with a cup of deep-steamed green tea is a tip of the hat to the chef’s Shizuoka roots. Clasping to heart his father’s maxim that ‘cooking is self-expression’, he expresses himself through goma-ae made with freshly roasted, freshly ground sesame. The calligraphy of the restaurant’s name was written by the chef’s mother; the vessels for sake were crafted by his father." - Michelin Inspector

Seriously, this could be the best meal I ever ate. Certainly one of them! Not being that familiar with truly great Japanese cooking I was a little nervous, but wow. Most of these ingredients I never ate before but the combinations of flavours and textures were quite something and the meal unfolded like a journey through unexpected combinations and the best of Japanese cuisine. It's an intimate experience, food served to you individually in front of your eyes by the chefs but the entire experience is calm and measured. Despite, I am sure, the frantic work behind the scenes. OK this is more expensive than yer typical restaurant (although hardly compared to London prices) but in terms of value for money it's off the scale. Please go. Mr Yokoi is doing something amazing with his team here (hat tip to the website explaining everything in English as we went along!) If you miss it, you miss something you won't ever get back at home.

Absolutely one of the best dining experiences ever. The food, the service, the amazing attention to detail, from the handcrafted pottery to sake pairing, everything was perfection. The food was top notch and such creativity! Most of all the warmth and hospitality of all the staff and especially the chef and lovely hostess, who took time to explain the courses despite my feeble Japanese. It reminded me of the best parts of my tea classes, in the how each little detail was paid attention to. Also appreciated the wonderful young woman who sat next to us and helped explain things and invited us to join in on a birthday celebration. It was definitely one of the highlights of our trip and we hope to be back! Thank you so much for having us at your restaurant!

We enjoyed a wonderful meal at this Kyoto restaurant. Chef Yokoi and his team have created a complex and creative omakase menu, delivered with excellent, relaxed service. A special mention for Julia the Spanish chef who translated Japanese to English and vice versa.

I had such a wonderful meal at Yokoi and I’m already missing the food. I truly appreciate the flavors of food and their techniques. The yuzu soda was incredible, by the way haha! I’d definitely make the trip back. Thank you, Yushi San and Mizuyo San, for your hard work and kindness. 🤍
