The 38 Best Restaurants in Taipei | Eater

"This lovingly restored turn-of-the-last-century Japanese dormitory houses a restaurant, garden, and art gallery. The structure’s original features have been tastefully incorporated into a minimalist space, creating a peaceful dining experience where the vitality comes from the cuisine. The set menus — a fusion of French, Japanese, and Taiwanese ingredients and techniques — change regularly with the seasons to make the most of the local produce sourced from small farms around the island. [$$$ - $$$$] *Don’t miss the gallery, which focuses on the restoration of traditional Chinese and Taiwanese aboriginal dyeing techniques and offers an array of scarves and accessories available for purchase." - Clarissa Wei

A memorable experience featuring fine Japanese-centric seafood dining in a delightful little house (with National Palace Museum special exhibition paraphernalia in glass cases). Tastes were creative/unique for Taipei if not particularly structured. Sake, tea and wine pairings all available.

Visited Leputing for dinner and having a nice catch up with friends, felt privacy and cozy. The ambience is great for business talk too. The restaurant is converted by a Japanese dormitory, with a well maintenance and elegant Japanese style garden inside. The dishes created by seasonal ingredients and fresh from Taiwan. Every table served by a server who will explaining all ingredients but I always get lost in middle of her speaking :) (I will prefer a small notes on the menu). I can’t recall all the names or ingredients but be frankly the dishes are incredibly delicious and freshly! There is two main course either Beef or duck for selection. I’m truly enjoyed the essence of the ingredients in every bite. My top list is the rice in clay pot and the dessert with chestnut in overall. Of course the main course - beef, was tasteful with medium cook. I’ve an enjoyable dinner time with great food, nice wine and good friends.

Visited during vacation. Food and wine pairing was amazing. My main was lobster and it was tender yet firm. The host complements the experience by explaining details of the dishes and wine.

Overall it was a great experience from start to finish. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. Our server's attention to detail was excellent when he picked up from our conversation that it was one of our birthdays. But the food was definitely the star. All the food items were carefully crafted with a lot of thought. The chef used a lot of unique food items to accompany each main item. Would highly recommend a visit!

We were at Leputing for lunch on Christmas eve. This is a beautiful restaurant that has been converted from a Japanese dormitory, while retaining many Japanese elements such as the garden. Leputing's seven-course meal is incredibly delicious. Each dish from the start to the end is arranged thoughtfully delighting our palates. What I appreciate most about their dishes is that the restaurant retains the original texture and flavour of the ingredients they use, and is served as a perfect dish. Service was extraordinary with the servers always ensuring our needs are catered for such as my partner's dietary restriction. We were here to celebrate my birthday and the server surprised me with a birthday cake. In summary, it was an enjoyable lunch experience at a beautiful restaurant that serves delicious food complemented by professional service. Five stars!

There is a fixed dinner set with a choice of 3 main meals. There was only the beef and duck options available for us that day. I chose the duck for my main meal. Though the dishes may look small in size, it was very appealing and appetising! The food was warm to the palate. The waiters were quick to clear our used dishes. We have a very good dining experience, even till the minute that the restaurant was closing. :)

Using Taiwanese seasonal and local ingredients to create a series of culinary sensations. Inspired by the Autumn in Taiwan, these dinner set featured local ingredients in the golden leaves season, such as crab, wild mushroom, goose, and even rare spices that only indigenous people would know where to find. Leputing showcased their skill, knowledge, heart and stories in their artwork-liked dishes. However, dinning here was not only gastronomic, Leputing has filled the signature Taiwanese hipster style to every details. The architecture and interior was from Japanese colonial era, with a zen garden inside. Occasionally showing garments and ceramics made by local mastercrafters that could be purchased, helping local artist to preserve the traditional craftsmanship. Last but not least, their service was spot on, staffs are eager to explain their dishes, the whole expensive was very pleasant, gastronomic and intellectual.

I booked this place about a month in advance because I wanted to have a nice fine dining but not Japanese, perhaps Taiwanese meal during my TPE trip. And so we booked Leputing. This place was a Japanese home turned restaurant complete with stone garden and beautiful views. I read another review about awkwardly stepping onto the wooden floor with my shoes on and I felt the same as I walked in that day. We ended up having lunch on our last day, and they were serving the Mother's day special at $3880pp. White Asparagus/Broccoli Puree/ Anchovy Panko - quite delicious Spinach Mackerel/ Pea Puree/ Pine Vinegar - quite delicious, I especially liked the vinegared fish Pork Rillettes/Pickled Bitter Gourd/ Brioche/ Cucumber - alright, this reminded me of traditional steamed ground pork Charcoal Chicken Meatball/ Black Garlic Oil/ Chicken Broth - this was alright Slow Cooked Amadai/ Cassava/ Smoked Cream Sauce - delicious, the cassava chips were blackened by the squid ink Premium A5 Wagyu - it was extremely premium, better than other A5 that I had in the past. Chishang Rice - I think it looked nice but needed some kick, but filled our stomachs Dessert - was the very best. It was a white peach dessert with peach sorbet. Overall okay, there were some pleasant surprises like the dessert but I would not have liked to enjoy the dessert the most. I think there are similar around, I should want to try other places to compare.

Yelp
7 of us went for my sister's birthday. Beautifully presented food, fantastic service. Lovely house. I was not a fan of one of the fish dishes because it was a little too fishy for, but everyone else in my family liked it. I picked the venison meal as my main (shouldve gone for the lobster instead) and it was served practically raw, like soo bloody. I couldnt eat it and the waitress said they could ask the chef to cook it a little more..but they still served it extremely rare and so I just didnt eat it. So that was a disappointing finish. Also incredibly pricey but I guess that comes its pedigree.

Yelp
Food not only present beautifully, it also tastes so delicious! Used local good ingredients all around Taiwan, and changed menu according to season. The waiter/waitress are very attentive and explains each dish to make an even better experience. The Japanese garden set the nice zen ambiance. The only downside is this a historic house, the sound stays in. When too many tables talk at the same time, it's too loud. Still, it's a meal worth every penny. Highly recommend to try it when in the neighborhood.

Yelp
YELP only allows 5 stars but I'll give it 10 stars if I could. The attention to detail is spectacular right down to the utensils and cutlery. By Andrew

Yelp
I took my mom here for her birthday. It's a beautiful restaurant, in a restored Japanese dorm. There are only four set dinners you can choose from, where the main course is different, but you get a variety of other dishes leading up to it, sort of like a tasting menu, I suppose. It's billed as a sort of Asian and French fusion, but as with many of the restaurants like this, the fare is lighter and more on the minimalistic Asian/Japanese side, though the presentation had an upscale French feel to it. I ordered the beef dish. The beef was tender, much more marbled than I expected, but very good. Our other courses included a sort of pea cracker, a sashimi plate, a croquette, a really delicious chicken soup, fish baked in seaweed paper (I think), this amazing rice (the rice was DELICIOUS), and 湯圓. I was definitely full by the end. The restaurant also has a "gallery" of hand dyed fabrics that is really nice. The whole place has a really nice ambience, though I would say the one jarring aspect is the bathroom! The bathroom is the only space that seems like it wasn't renovated, with fluorescent lighting and a setup that feels more at home in a less fancy, old restaurant. You can buy the raw rice (which we loved) to take home and make at home. We almost did. All in all, a nice experience for a special dinner.

Yelp
Leputing is a beautiful restaurant with a deliciously unique menu. This is fine dining at its finest. I love the atmosphere and service which made my dinner a wonderful experience. Our waitress was very good at introducing all of our dishes.

Yelp
From the outside, it doesn't seem like much. But the garden is very pretty and I love how they repurpose an old building. The service was exceptional. They explained every dish, from its ingredients to the cooking method. It made you appreciate the food a lot more. I would recommend the filet instead of the wagu. The wagu was on the fatter side and the fat distribution wasn't too well (making it more oily, greasy tasting than...melt on your tongue). The filet, on the other hand, had a tender texture and great taste. It was a 5 (or 6) course meal and the portions were good. I am not sure if they have an English menu.

Yelp
Nice unique menu with such a serene setting which made our lunch dining experience in Taipei a very memorable one. Service was good and appreciate they fact they were able to cater all the dishes according to our requests.

Yelp
Of all the old buildings that have been restored as restaurants, this place is definitely my favorite. What sets this place apart from the rest isn't the architecture, but the food. I haven't been to Andre Chiang's RAW, but from what I've had of his food (Westin in Hsin Chu), the cuisine at Leputing plays safer in terms of flavor, but is far more successful in applying traditional flavors to fine dining. The standout dish of my meal was a tiny cup of soup, inspired by a traditional taiwanese dish, luffa(絲瓜) with oysters; I think it's a dish that anyone who grew up in a Taiwanese family would recognize. The base of the soup was a thick, concentrated puree of luffa, very rich and surprisingly savoury. It was topped with a foam made from water used to cook oysters, light in mouthfeel but very aromatic with a strong and immediate oyster flavor. The flavors in traditional luffa with oysters already work very well together; the soup took it to the next level. This one dish has convinced me that capabilities of the head chef here, whoever he is, is very very good. Service was better than average in Taiwan, very good for the price, but I would like to see them raise prices and improve service even if it's just a little bit. They're not in your face about everything like other places, but to me, the best service is the kind that stays in the background unnoticed until you need it (I've only experienced that level of service in very high end restaurants though). For the money (lunch), this place is well worth it, everything is top notch for the price. I ordered the most expensive set on the menu (1880 twd) with filet mignon, and it was definitely worth it. Word of warning: the filet was rare (they didn't let me choose my steak temperature for some reason), but that is the way I like it anyways.
