Torien Review - NOHO - New York - The Infatuation

"Walk through the heavy curtains into the 17-seat chef’s counter at Torien, and you won’t get the feeling that you’re about to have grilled chicken for dinner. The near silence in the bright, modern space is only broken by brief course descriptions from the chefs, who prepare the 13-course omakase experience behind the bar. But this isn’t just any chicken. All of the grilled skewers at this Noho yakitori spot are delicious, especially the glazed meatballs that melt when you bite into them, and if the price were half as steep - as it is at the chef’s original yakitori restaurant in Tokyo - then it’d be a great unique dining experience with a client or date. But considering the extremely subdued space and the fact that a few of the skewers only include forgettable vegetables, it’s not special enough to be worth $150 plus tax, tip, and drinks." - Matt Tervooren

The food here is far more bland than expected. The meatballs on a wooden spoon are not good and I would avoid them. The fried chicken is decent but not worth going out if the way for. The main benefit as others have pointed out is the lack of wait time but the restaurant is noisy and not enjoyable. The staff are constantly shouting and the manager seems to be frequently correcting them. It gets annoying and spoils the vibe. The price is also too high. I expected a cover charge but for the food and experience to make it worth it.

Each table has a charge, but the food and drinks are good when you have a long day from work and you want something delicious and filling. Tables are only good for 4-6.

Food is good. Looks like they are quite popular, so we went in... Food is pretty good. And they have a big menu. Id come back to try more items

Nice place to eat with nice grilled least typical from Japan. The eggplant pickle and tofu salad are also very nice ! Looking like a local place with local people of all ages :-)

Stumbled across the restaurant and they had space inside. Menu had pictures and English words on to use so very easy to order as a tourist. Small cover charge but we were sold about this before we sat down. Service was prompt and friendly staff. We wanted a simple, quick dinner and that’s what we got. Had some vegetarian dishes too.

Table charge of 330yen per pax. Huge seating area and many choices for yakitori. Food is decently good and yakisoba is flavourful.

Table charge was communicated but not ideal. Drinks were expensive and mandatory. The yakitori was ok.

Should have read the reviews about this place first, we deeply regret eating here. So it's true about them charging only tourists with cover charge but I didn't mind that as much since they do tell you up front. What's really bad was the yakitori we were served. Both chicken and pork had this unpleasant smell and tasted bad - easily were the worst yakitori we had in our lives.

Yelp
I'm actually excited that someone is writing about this place and have a pretty honest rating. I don't remember if I ever rated a restaurant this low but definitely lowest in Japan. 1. Service - as good as expected in Japan. Always impressed with the service attitude of Japanese service industry. 2. Value - Some may considered it ridiculous to charge 300 yen service charge not minimum spend to eat here. As tourist and with 4 people, my kids don't want to wait for other places. 3. Foods were disappointed. So disappointed I didn't even take pictures for many of our dishes. Nagoya teba - it's more like fried than grilled. Didn't put a lot of seasoning... Honey and pepper. Yakionigiri - The flavor is ok. But rice is too moist, the rice ball was not crispy enough. Okonomiyaki - That was a joke. Used eggs instead of flour and proper ingredient like squids and cabbage etc. Just didn't taste right now the sauce is fine cause you can buy okonomiyaki sauce from anywhere Chicken and pork skewer - Too salty. Way too salty. Not grilled long enough, I mean it's cooked but lack of the charred flavor not the grilled marks. I see no proper attitude in the food making. It's just cook something to make some money. They only plus here is no wait and has lots of table. Disappointed.

Yelp
This is a standard place for core drinkers. I do not think it gives very special something for them. However, for the beginners, the place may give experience to enjoy traditional style without high threshold.
