Only a little over an hour away from Barcelona city center by car or train, Girona is the perfect answer to the question of what to do near Barcelona. With its brightly colored houses along the River Onyar, and architecture ranging from the Medieval era to the present, not to mention plenty of highly recommended places to eat, Girona could be described as Barcelona's photogenic, charming and delicious, and anything but provincial first cousin. Hotel Ciutat de Girona

Hotel · Girona

"Old Town Girona Located near the French border, Girona is a beautiful city where you will discover a real feeling for its history by simply walking around the ancient streets. By Jennifer Kendall"

Cathedral of Girona

Catholic cathedral · Girona

"Take in centuries of architecture at Girona's Cathedral Gothic, Romanesque and Baroque elements mix in this beautiful, if architecturally confused cathedral constructed between the 11th and 18th centuries. After climbing a fair number of stairs to even get in the door, don't miss the cathedral's claim to fame, a 23-meter wide Gothic nave (the widest in the world). April to October, the church is open from 10am to 7:30pm, and November to Marc from 10am to 6:30pm. Entry is free on Sundays, but the church has a quieter crowd-free charm on weekdays."

La força vella

Permanently Closed

"Take an evening walk around Girona's Força Vella Walk along the ramparts of Girona's Força Vella, or "Old Fortress." The crumbling 1st century B.C. Roman walls are even more impressive after sunset, when they seem to suddenly appear around a corner, shrouded in shadows and mist."

Divinum

Restaurant · Girona

"A Neverending Catalan Meal in Girona A deconstructed Spanish tortilla. A fried aubergine. A selection of cured meats that would please any palate. Olives whose essence fill up the whole room. And not to forget the wine pairings. That is the kind of experience you'll have at Divinum, Girona's ultimate fancy-pants tapas place. An authentic, glutton, mouth-watering foodie moment that your taste buds will thank you for. At any time, you can either order the tasting menu, or ask for the daily offer - either way, there's no such thing as a bad choice at Divinum. Absolutely everything is fresh, tasty, well presented and quite frankly, divine. Also, the decor - while the entrance is more of the traditional, wooden style, the backroom is ultra-modern and quite the conversation starter, with a plexiglass floor covering an impressive collection of wine bottles, and equally pretty furniture. If you're looking for a more high-end Catalan tapas experience, then look no further - Catalonia is perhaps the tastiest and underrated of all the Spanish provinces, and Girona does not disappoint. Especially not at Divinum!"
