El Patio 77

"How did it strike you on arrival? This 1890s-era stone building is homey and inviting, but also elegant. I was first struck by the period-looking woodern staircase, then I caught sight of the beautiful, tiled floors. Nice. What’s the crowd like? The crowd is mainly couples in their thirties who eschew chain hotels in traditional tourist zones. The good stuff: Tell us about your room. The eight rooms (six suites and two standard rooms) are uniquely decorated, incorporating traditional materials in a contemporary way. They're named for different Mexican states and each one reflects something of the handicrafts of its namesake region. You'll want to spend time exploring all of the different objects before you head out into the city. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?Comfortable white linens are topped with colorful cushions and bedspreads. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase? You'll want to know where you can buy the rugs. And the pillows. And the wall art. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down. The bathrooms, like the rooms, are all uniquely decorated: some have a modern feel while others are more rustic-chic. Note that the two standard rooms have a shared bathroom, so if worry about bumping into a stranger while brushing your teeth, opt for one of the suites. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word? There is free high-speed Internet in every room and across the hotel. Room service: Worth it?There's no full-service restaurant, but breakfast is served each morning in a beautiful central patio (and it's included in the price of the room). What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay?El Patio 77 is one of the few hotels in Mexico City that's environmentally conscious: Water in the showers and sinks are heated by solar energy and recycled into for use in sewage." - Susannah Rigg
