Sir Francis Drake

"How did it strike you on arrival? The first thing anyone will notice walking into the Sir Francis Drake is the gregarious Beefeater doormen, decked out in red jackets with gold and black piping and black hats. They're an iconic part of the Sir Francis Drake, and they add a certain flair to the experience. Inside, the hotel is opulent, a combination of the pre-crash glam of 1928, when it first opened, and more modern touches. Think marble walls, a grand staircase, crystal chandeliers, wood paneling, ornate ceilings, brocade curtains—and throw in some red upholstery and zebra-stripe throw pillows. Think ornate, historic details, with a dash of kitsch—like the red Beefeater statue over the bar. What’s the crowd like? The Sir Francis Drake gets all kinds, including shoppers, business travelers, and tourists. You'll see business suits and sport coats, but jeans and kids aren't out of place, and you may catch a bride or two. The good stuff: Tell us about your room.At 135 square feet, the "historic" guest rooms are very petite, with a "historic jewel box" configuration—the hotel even recommends that they're ideal for single occupancy. Deluxe guest rooms even max out at 260 feet. They're less a retreat than a place to leave your suitcase while you explore the city. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase? The hotel provides in-room yoga mats, as well as a complimentary yoga channel. Pets also stay free, "so long as they fit in the door." Sodas from the minibar are a hotel steal at $3, and there are also interesting options, like a $6 first aid kit and a $26 romance kit. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down.Guests have complained that the water pressure is low, and some bathrooms are so small it's hard to blow dry your hair. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word?$12.99 per day. Room service: Worth it?Standard egg breakfast with potatoes and bacon runs $23, while a burger or a mushroom pizza are $18. Staff: If you could award one a trophy, who gets it, and why?The Beefeaters. They really are an institution in San Francisco—some of them end up staying for decades—and they're happy to pose for photos with your kids (or you). Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you.The Starlight Room is kitsch fun. It has the dim lighting, marble floors, and plush red banquettes you might expect, but also a spectacular 21st-floor view of the city from the dance floor, and a disco ball. Stick to the drinks, skip the food, and enjoy the city lights from the dancefloor. Hotel guests don't pay cover. On Sundays, they have a drag brunch that starts at 11 a.m. What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay? The size of the hotel rooms. But, the location is amazing for shoppers—literal steps to the shops of Union Square. Bottom line: worth it, and why?If you're looking for a hotel room to spend some time in, another hotel would be a better choice. But if you just need a place to lay your head and stash your shopping bags before dinner, the Sir Francis Drake is a great option." - Elise Craig
