"Located at 830 N Shaver Street, the 1905 will reopen within the next four to six weeks under a new team after closing in the fall amid allegations of unpaid wages, mismanagement, and other financial problems. I learned from a press release that Chris Pfeifer will take over operations, Joshua Madrid — who tended bar at Multnomah Whiskey Library and Scotch Lodge — will be the bar manager, and Holly Resnick will serve as program director, and that newly named managing partner Tim Heichelheim and other members moved quickly to remedy the issues by paying back wages and tips and squaring up with musicians. The club opened in 2016 as a small pizzeria and gradually became a nightly jazz venue that stepped in after Jimmy Mak’s closed, earned a spot in Downbeat’s international venue guide in 2023, and began attracting big-name acts like Wynton Marsalis; however, it ran into serious money trouble in 2023 (including a GoFundMe and bounced checks) that led to its November closure. A local musician who spoke with me says management appears to have repaired relationships with local artists, repaid outstanding invoices, and is returning the venue’s focus to Portland-based musicians, and I’ll be watching the 1905’s Instagram for further updates." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden
