"Imagine an old-school French restaurant. Chances are that what your brain has conjured up looks an awful lot like this postcard-from-Provence spot in Hammersmith: red gingham tablecloths, chequerboard floors, wooden bistro chairs, and more achingly charming details that will get you in the mood for an Amélie re-watch. But despite the Mistinguett wall art and bienvenue greetings written on the blackboards, the food lacks that full-throttle butter-richness we crave when French classics are on the agenda. Still, it’s a setting built for washing down a basket of salty frites with glugs of spicy Corbières, and the good-value three-course prix fixe makes it popular with neighbourhood regulars who wander in whenever their Thursday night is in need of a little amour escapism. Food Rundown Steak Frites The inside of this steak is so gorgeous and pink that it’s practically blushing, but the edges are way too tough. We do however approve of the sheer salt snackability of the long, skinny fries. photo credit: Heidi Lauth Beasley Le Petit Citron What we have here is, effectively, a lemon yoghurt. The jolly little teardrops of meringue are a nice touch though and add some sweetness to all the citric action. photo credit: Heidi Lauth Beasley" - Heidi Lauth Beasley
