La Chaumiere

"There’s nothing modern about La Chaumiere, but the slightly faded décor, watery cocktails, and octogenarian customers are what give this French restaurant its frozen-in-time appeal. (It opened in 1976, and it doesn’t look like much has changed since.) Unlike a lot of other French restaurants in the city, La Chaumiere doesn’t lean into the romantic bistro stereotypes. Instead, it embraces a French Alpine aesthetic, with beamed ceilings and farming tools on the walls. The menu, too, seems plucked from Mont Blanc. The duck with currant sauce is a favorite, as well as the chicken and pork sausages covered in a madeira reduction and caramelized apples." - Madeline Weinfield
