"Abu’s Bean Pie Company in Bed-Stuy has been perfecting its bean pie recipe for over 20 years, and it shows. For the uninitiated, bean pies are usually made from navy beans, and come with a whole lot of history: popularized by the Nation of Islam back in the 1960s. They’re also delicious, and hard to find in the city—except at Abu’s. If you live in the area, the $6, 4-inch bean pies might quickly become your go-to treat. A birthday? A bean pie. An engagement party? Maybe two. The golden brown top layer has the texture of sweet, edible sand, while the bottom stays custardy. For extra credit ordering, there are a few other varieties of pie available at the shop, like sweet potato and coconut custard, as well as moist, heavily spiced carrot cake, and patties that always seem to be sold out. photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte" - Willa Moore
