"We’ll break the bad news first. There’s no view of the ocean at Ocean View Cafe—it’s a block from the shore. But this Brighton Beach Ukrainian restaurant with bright aqua chairs does offer something even harder to come by: Several sun-faded, signed photos of Nic Cage, who once shot a movie here. The food-related highlights include a selection of blintzes and bouncy vareniki. And there are plenty of other ways to have a reasonably priced meal off the extensive menu. Ocean View Cafe accepts credit cards, but you’ll pay lower prices in cash. photo credit: Kate Previte Food Rundown Tea With Lemon And Preserves Tea here (specifically, a bag of Twinings Earl Grey) comes in a beautiful etched glass and metal cup, served in the traditional fashion with lemon slices and syrupy cherry preserves as a sweetener. It’s a little like drinking a warm, non-alcoholic old-fashioned. photo credit: Molly Fitzpatrick Ukrainian Borscht Light, refreshing, and satisfying, this borscht is a beautiful shade of scarlet that’d be great for tie-dye. The soup turns pink—and becomes even tastier—with the addition of a generous dollop of sour cream. photo credit: Molly Fitzpatrick Eggplant Caviar This wonderfully garlicky spread is like eating cold silk. photo credit: Molly Fitzpatrick Vareniki With Potato And Mushroom The vareniki themselves are good, but the best part of this dish is the sweet, meaty, near-liquid caramelized onions that crown it. photo credit: Molly Fitzpatrick Blintzes With Farmer Cheese These crisply browned blintzes have a rich, tangy cheesecake-adjacent filling. Carve out room in your schedule for a nap after ordering them. photo credit: Molly Fitzpatrick" - Molly Fitzpatrick
