"We’re suckers for a bar with a ladder on wheels. At the Library of Distilled Spirits, on the ground floor of the Hyatt Union Square, they’ve got one—to reach the bookcase-style shelving for their top-shelf liquor. This place feels like a private reading room, with high ceilings packed with bottles of booze, cozy leather chairs and couches, and a big communal table. There aren’t actually any books, but it’s a nice alternative to Barnes & Noble when you need to kill some time in the area and would rather do it with a drink in hand. The cocktails here are named for famous writers—they’re good and not too fussy, with not more than three to five components each. Try a zippy J.R.R. Tolkien with reposado tequila and grapefruit, or a Michael Shaara, a Paper Plane riff with velvet falernum and citrus. photo credit: Will Hartman" - Will Hartman
