"I co-founded this project with two friends (Mark and Gonan) on a large patch of land on the outskirts of Canggu, surrounded by rice-field views and just a stone’s throw from the beach, with the aim of creating the first custom-designed digital-nomad co-working hostel in Bali. After two years of construction and an unexpected pandemic (plus the usual headaches — worker shortages, misplaced blueprints, and legal hoops helped through by local friends), we opened with a soft launch in September 2021 and got our first dorms and private rooms open the following May. We built Tribal Bali to be work-friendly and social: lightning-fast Wi‑Fi, a coworking space with desks, sofas, beanbags, private call booths, and plentiful power outlets, and all the amenities so you can work hard all day without leaving. The accommodation is carefully thought out — private rooms, huge shared bathrooms, and dorms designed for privacy with charging outlets and stairs to the upper bunks instead of noisy ladders — plus comfortable beds and smart compartmentalisation. On the social side there’s a gigantic multilevel pool (what I consider the best in Pererenan), a huge hanging cargo net to chill with a book, and a bar serving classic cocktails, beers, our own Tribal Tonics, and a backpacker-friendly happy hour; the restaurant team serves a healthy, varied menu and damn good coffee to keep you fuelled." - Matthew Kepnes
