"I found Tofuku-ji to be a quiet, contemplative temple where you can escape the crowds except during the foliage season, when the changing leaves turn the site into a nonstop photoshoot. Outside of those busy weeks it's easy to have the grounds largely to yourself; the temple grounds are free, while admission to the main buildings is 400 JPY.
