"A vast, 110,000-hectare protected wetland fed by a 390km river, this internationally recognized Ramsar site comprises a shifting network of lakes, tributaries, peat swamp forest and flooded rainforest. It supports rich biodiversity — some 127 bird species including endemic waterfowl and large seasonal influxes of migratory egrets and herons — and shelters significant populations of estuarine crocodiles as well as the critically rare Philippine crocodile. The marsh’s fluctuating waters and wetlands create hauntingly beautiful scenery (placid lakes that mirror the sky, leafless tree trunks rising from the water) and make it a prime destination for birdwatching, canoeing and wildlife observation, while also underpinning the livelihoods of communities that depend on fishing and seasonal resources." - Edgar Alan Zeta-Yap
