"In a class at Manga School Nakano International in Tokyo, I struggled through basics with teacher Nao Yazawa — a shy, bespectacled professional manga artist best known for illustrating the popular series Wedding Peach — who reassured me that accurate circles are hard even for pros. My task was to draw a female manga character from the shoulders up: using a grid to guide proportions helped transform my wonky, lopsided attempts into a reasonably healthy-looking character I named Aiko, though I still apologised for her messy hair after too much erasing. Yazawa’s gentle verdict, “Not everyone is meant to be a manga artist,” and the class focus on manga’s exaggerated features and technique gave the session a warm, instructive atmosphere that felt rooted in Japan’s long, iconic manga tradition." - SilverKris
