"Powered by its own photovoltaic solar panels, this once-abandoned Marcel Breuer–designed brutalist landmark now feels fresh and modern; even my sun‑filled restaurant latte—decorated with a perfect foam flourish and served at just the right temperature—was brewed and steamed using electricity generated on‑site. As the country’s first fossil fuel‑free hotel and part of the Tapestry Collection by Hilton, it runs everything—linen laundering, remote‑controlled shades, and warm baths—on its own power, a philosophy they call “hospitality for the planet.” Conceived by local architect‑developer Bruce Becker and his firm Becker + Becker, the property features low‑voltage LED lighting, an in‑house kitchen that cooks by induction, 12 Tesla superchargers plus two universal EV stations (with more on the way), and an electric 14‑person shuttle. The building generates at least as much energy as it consumes, and its bones—a 1969 Armstrong Rubber Company headquarters and research labs—were thoughtfully recycled." - Amy Thomas
