How Black Communities Are Bridging the Food Access Gap | Eater

"A fast-casual concept focused on homestyle Chinese cooking with locations in New York City and New Haven, the company expanded a pandemic-era Share a Meal program to send meals to food-insecure communities during the protests, pledged proceeds from its pantry store to community organizations, and is revising hiring and internship practices to broaden workforce diversity; it also runs a storytelling-focused Distance Dining series that spotlights the connections between Chinese cuisine and other food cultures and highlights the contributions of Black culinarians." - Nadra Nittle

NYC’s Junzi Kitchen Is the Future of Chinese Food | Eater

"A bright, airy fast-casual Chinese kitchen driven by culinary director Lucas Sin’s pragmatic vision of modern Chinese food, this location centers on an assembly-line menu built around noodles and thin flour-and-water chūnbǐng pancakes. Originating from a Yale-incubated concept that began in New Haven, the shop aims to update and diversify Chinese cuisine for broader American audiences while remaining rooted in careful operations — good people, processes, and ingredients — and an emphasis on storytelling. The team hires locally and ethnically diverse staff rather than relying solely on traditionally trained Chinese wok cooks, reflecting a mission to make Chinese cooking accessible, scalable, and adaptable as the brand pursues ambitious expansion plans." - Jenny G. Every time I come back to New Haven, I have to swing by Junzi. The food here is soo good. Flavorful, fresh, nostalgic, and the perfect go-to when I need to nourish my body, mind, and soul. Don’t skip. My fav. is a knife noodle bowl. (I miss the wraps/burritos.)

Michelle Wong

Google
It doesn’t matter what combination you order here, because everything individually is cooked so well that it all tastes bomb together. My favorites are the knife-cut noodles and the tomato egg sauce. All the protein options are delicious; even their soy egg is well made. Love the ginger scallion sauce. Excellent service, food is served hot! Can’t believe this place doesn’t have lines out the door.

Google
Meh, definitely overpriced for what you get. The portions are super small, and they limit you to just 3 toppings—cilantro counts as a topping, seriously? The corn was literally just boiled with zero flavor. We tried one bowl with noodles and another with brown rice, and both were incredibly bland. There’s no depth or seasoning, just very underwhelming overall. Honestly, I don’t get the hype at all.

Tess Gorman

Google
The food is delicious! It’s a little salty as you might expect from casual restaurants like Chipotle or Seoul Spice, but not overly salted. I loved the sauce flavors and the tofu portions were gracious. The tea is flavorful and just sweet enough. This place has great vegan options and I would eat here again!

Google
Absolutely yucky! In all my years I’ve never eaten something like these. I ordered the noodles after long wait as the server was very slow. When I first took a bite I thought that the noodles were horrible! They were overcooked, soggy, and overall absolutely disgusting. I know this review may hurt the student entrepreneurs’ feelings, but I also really hope they could improve.

Google
This place is SO DELICIOUS and has a great atmosphere. I got the BBQ chicken rice dish & a jasmine tea. I was there with my baby and the staff was super friendly. Cannot wait to go back!

Google
Small but cute restaurant. They offer both Build Your Own and menu items which is nice. I got the A1 Tomato Egg with Pork Noodles which was flavorful. It was a bit sauce-heavy but the knife noodle texture was quite nice.

Google
Been coming here for years! Came in on a Thursday afternoon and it wasn’t busy. Got knife noodles and the scallion oil sauce which I have never had that one before and it was delicious! Love the different sauces here and the many variety of toppings. Excited to come back again

Yelp
In the mood for yummy chinese comfort food? Junzi is the place to be! Everything I've had from here tastes home cooked and authentic. Their ingredients are always fresh and flavorful. I love that they have premade options and a build your own noodle/rice bowl. All of the premade bowls are well-crafted, and they have a variety of noodles, veggies, and proteins you can select if you want to customize. I would recommend the lion's head dish here (it's a classic) and my favorite noodles have been the knife cut (the wide noodles just hit different!). The ambiance is divey, and comfy for a small party. However, it can be tight if you have a family or larger group so, in that case, definitely order it to go! Fantastic service. Their people are always friendly and kind. One time, we had a missing bowl from our grubhub order and they made us a new one for free.

Yelp
This was literally my noodle bowl. Maybe give them a break because it was take out? Unbelievable.

Yelp
Came on a Saturday around 5:30pm. No wait. The staff was very friendly! It was my first time here after a recommendation from my friend. The food was amazing! Definitely coming back!

Tyler W.

Yelp
The food is fantastic and flavorful! One of my favorite food spots in New Haven since it's so close to Yale. The staff is also amazing! Highly recommend!

Yelp
My sugary love of a woman took me here to try their noodles. This place was really good and the food was fresh and satisfying. I had the fire crackers chicken with spring noodles, chili sauce, scallions, Cilantro, and bean sprouts. Quality ingredients! I forgot to ask for bok choy tho. This eatery is small with a few seats available but has big flavor! You get served quickly. I would definitely come back here to eat.
google avatar

Yelp
So happy my sister suggested we go to this healthy modern Chinese noodle spot. (They have rice and lettuce too) You can build your own bowl going along the counter adding in items for the base, protein, veggies, and garnishes. I chose the knife noodles, firecracker chicken, cabbage, bean spouts, bok choy, cilantro, scallions, and crispy fried shallots. This was so delicious and tasted so clean. My only issue was the seating available was uncomfortable. I'd definitely will be coming back. So yummy!

Yelp
I haven't been here in a while & it didn't disappoint. I used to order from here all the time when I worked on Whalley Ave. I thought my sis & me can eat here then go to cookie 39 (for the Yelp Elite event) for dessert. They're literally right next to each other. The food here is delish!!It's always fresh & tasty! Food makes your tummy feel good! Restaurant is basically building your own bowls. You choose from noodles, rice, or salad & then add-on what you want! I chose my usual firecracker chicken w/ thin noodles, cucumbers, soy egg($1.50 extra fyi),mandarin oranges, corn, & cabbage. I asked for the firecracker sauce to be separated. Chicken was moist & had the right amount of spice. Other ingredients tasted so fresh & the noodles were steaming hot(just the way I like it). Firecracker sauce was fire (so good if you're into spicy stuff)!! I grabbed some Chinese candy on my way out. It had a white rabbit on it. It tasted like vanilla but chalky. Workers were very friendly & nice. Inside is really small but you can dine in(which me & my sis did).

Nate M.

Yelp
The store was severely understaffed and my pick-up order was either given to the wrong person or lost. In either case, the employees thought it had been completed while I was still empty handed after 30 or 40 minutes. I talked with the employee manning the register and he seemed confused but said it would be "done in a few minutes". It was absolutely swamped when I was in there; mistakes happen; I understand. What I don't understand is why over the course of the next 45 minutes, I got to watch countless other customers walk in and out with their food despite being told again and again my order would be "done in a few minutes". At my fourth or fifth visit to the register I was told they were out of every meat except tofu; they hadn't started making my order yet. Again, I understand running out of things on a busy day, but had the order been: A) completed in a reasonable time frame, or B) corrected after the initial confusion, I have no doubt I would have received what I ordered. Instead I walked out of Junzi after almost an hour and a half with a bag full of tofu and disappointment. I'm sure it's good on a slow day, but my experience on a busy one was no less than awful.

Yelp
1/1 Ambience; 1.5/2 Food; 1/1 Service; 0.5/1 Value I frequented Junzi Kitchen a lot during my undergraduate years at Columbia when they first opened, so the brand is near and dear to my heart. I loved the fast-casual concept of tailored Chinese cuisine on late nights. The staff is very quick but helpful and patient if it is your first time or if you just need a moment to figure out amongst the many options, and the store was maintained beautifully. My friend got the braised beef bowl while I got a custom bowl with furu sesame knife noodles and firecracker chicken. The furu sesame has been my long time favorite for ages, and it didn't disappoint this time either. We both thought the food tasted fresh and delicious. However, the nearly $14 pre-tax cost is rather steep for the smaller portion sizes, especially since the veggie add-ins and garnishes are now capped since their initial opening.

Yelp
Happily stumbled upon Junzi today for a quick take-out lunch. Pretty much the Asian Chipotle. Clean atmosphere, with some seating in front. Staff was friendly and quick offer assistance. I ordered the Shanghai scallion chicken salad with a few modifications (no corn, added cucumbers and egg). The chicken was well flavored and the egg was a great addition. Everything in the salad paired so well, I barely used the dressing. It was perfect for a lighter healthier lunch for me. I do wish there was a little more protein given, especially for the almost $16 bowl. Regardless, will be back to try more off their menu.

Yelp
I miss eating tomato and scrambled egg dishes, so I wanted to get the: -Tomato Egg Noodles with Slow-Braised Pork: 4/5 I loved the texture of the knife-cut noodles, as well as the tomato-enriched broth and bok choy. However, the meat had some kind of aftertaste to it, so it took me a while to finish. I think it's worth a try since everything else tasted really good. The staff were really friendly inside the store. You also get a cute teal-accented paper bag with your takeout.

Yelp
Junzi kitchen is a diamond in the rough. Delicious. My friend and I decided to go here after we went to a Yelp Elite event. I chose the lettuce as my base and had the spicy chicken as well as the corn cucumber and bamboo shoots delicious a little chilly oil on top and the salad dressing was yummy I loved everything about this place and can't wait to go back. Five stars

Yelp
Surprisingly good. Not your place for traditional Chinese food, but incredibly creative without a compromise on flavor! It's like a chipotle for Chinese noodles (you can also make rice and salad bowls, but their noodle texture is pretty good, so I recommend trying it at least once. They don't just have the basic noodles either. Sauce was the best part, super savory and warm. The noodles soak it up well. Can add toppings and meat is good too. The service is friendly and quick, they can get pretty busy around lunch time! There is one table and some countertop style seating. Overall place looks clean and comfortable, but it can get cramped quickly. My usual go to is the knife cut noodles (fun shape and texture), with the tomato egg sauce or normal sauce. I also add the braised pork, which is so savory and soft! I like to get their corn, cabbage, and bean sprout toppings.
google avatar

Karla L.

Yelp
The Cantonese barbecue rice bowl is my FAVORITE bowl to get after sleeping through lunch. Junzi has a very chill vibe and the worker are always very nice! Definitely 10/10 recommend:)

Kiley H.

Yelp
I ordered through UberEats and they royally f*cked up my order. I ordered a custom noodle bowl (see the 1st photo) and the 2nd was what arrived with my name on the receipt. Chicken vs. tofu is a HUGE mistake, but at the very least it does taste pretty good and I'm luckily not vegetarian or vegan. Do better please.

Yelp
knife noodles!!! good portions, can be a bit dry but not bad seasoning. got the furu sesame sauce, spicy chicken, bok choy, sprouts, cabbage, fried shallots, scallions, scallion sauce. quick pickup ready in less than 12 minutes
google avatar

Yelp
The pork was chefs kiss and the tomato and egg broth was well balanced and seasoned. The knife cut noods were also delicious

James H.

Yelp
The service here was awesome, the staff is very patient and helpful. The food was amazing, packed with flavor, very fresh, and very filling. This family of 5 can't wait to come back, all of loved it.

Jamie S.

Yelp
great food, good service, this is one of my regular places to just chill and eat my food. quiet as well which is really nice

Monica L.

Yelp
Food is sooo good!! My friend and i visit this gem every other week. I always get the same: spring noodles with scallion sauce. Yum!!
google avatar

Alana G.

Yelp
I would eat this everyday until I died if I could. I have absolutely no words for how splendid this food is except yum. Thank you for listening
google avatar

Aaron N.

Yelp
It's ok overall. The rice noodles were over cooked/mushy. The service was average. It wasn't amazing or horrible. I'd give it another shot and not order the rice noodles. The flavors of the dish were good.

Larry B.

Yelp
A++++ love this place Highly recommend addicted to scallion noodle bowl + hawthorn tea

Yelp
Stopped by Junzi Kitchen in New Haven yesterday for the first time and let me tell you - it's so delicious! It's so good I already can't wait to go back. They have so many options and clearly state what's vegan. I also love that they have a build your own which is what I did. Yum. Yum. Their tofu!? The tea!? I need! Everything was so fresh too. The portions for their bowls are generous and the price is right! My partner and I shared a bowl and were satisfied. Definitely check them out. They're worth the drive from anywhere in CT

Yelp
junzi is such a cute little spot for comfort food in the shops at yale! the location is super cute and has great interior and general graphic design. very clean and modern, and the staff is very accomodating and kind when taking my order. though not very authentic and a little bit too salty for my palette, the popular best seller tomato egg noodles were very good! the pork was tender and flavorful, and the tomato egg had great texture. the parsley added a wonderful depth to the dish, and I was overall very satisfied. i definetly recommend this place for a casual lunch day!
google avatar

Shirley F.

Yelp
Tried this place for the first time and was very disappointed... the spring noodles were tasteless... the bbq chicken tasted like it was sitting there all day. Besides all of that, I give them two stars because their customer service was good.
google avatar

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Great spot for a quick solo lunch or dinner. My go-to was the custom rice bowl with griddled tofu and the furu sesame sauce, plus veggies and toppings. Bring a branch to Silicon Valley, please!

Yelp
Junzi food is so good. It's light but filling and the taste is just perfect! I can have Junzi everyday!

Yelp
TL;DR Solid Chinese fast-casual restaurant! Portions are very large and I enjoyed the BYO noodle bowls. What to order: - Build your own bowl ($9.99) - tons of optionality! What to watch out for: - main item choices for the BYO bowls seem to change fairly often - I guess this is both a positive and negative, heh - when you choose the chili oil as one of the toppings it is actually spicy! (wow, another positive and negative, huh) ===== Came here twice and ordered a BYO noodle bowl both times. I am a firm believer in always choosing the BYO option; I mean, why order one of the set menu items when you can just plagiarize that order AND add more stuff? What's that, you say? Less is more? ... Nah. Both the knife-cut noodles and the spring noodles were well-textured and very good, even the next day (the portion they gave was big enough for two hearty meals). The firecracker chicken was satisfyingly spicy and flavorful, and the green pepper beef that I also tried was not bad, but alas, the pepper was a bit mushy for my tastes. I loved all the different, palatable vegetable toppings they had (no surprise, I selected basically all of them), and the jaja and spicy sesame sauces were both good. Honestly, you probably can't go too wrong with your order. It is very easy to order from their website for pickup and the food was always ready before their estimated times (another pro-con mashup!). Overall I would love to come back and try their other items, and I wish they would open up a shop in Chicago!
google avatar

Alexandra C.

Yelp
Such tiny portions, unfortunately. Fast service was nice. Bowls were pretty tasty -- nothing would return for. The rice bowl was better than the noodle. The noodle dish with tomato sauce tasted like some sort of Asian bolognese...which was...interesting.
google avatar

Jasmeet M.

Yelp
Delish! Similar to a chipotle concept. The noodles have a great chewy texture and the depending on your additions the bowls are very flavorful! Plenty of different protein options. Will definitely go back!
google avatar

Azfar B.

Yelp
Stopped by New Haven to tour Yale and found this place on Yelp. Overall experience was outstanding. Anthony Keys, the general manager, was warm and welcome and walked us through the menu. The staff were patient and great. He provided an extra rice dish after the order was somehow misplaced/misunderstood. The food was also really good. A must eat if you're in New Haven.
google avatar

Sophia N.

Yelp
These noods have gotten me through four years of heartbreaks and finals periods! I've definitely spent more money on Junzi than on textbooks. Over the years, it's been through some changes. I dearly miss the mushrooms, the jaja sauce, the sweet potato matchsticks, and the late-night scallion pancake bings. Please bring back the jaja sauce. But even their stripped back menu is iconic. I usually go for the tomato egg knife noodles with tofu, scallions, crispy shallots, cucumber, cabbage, and chili oil. Do not neglect the chili oil!
google avatar

Rhea A.

Yelp
I made my own bowl with rice, spicy sesame sauce, braised tofu, bean sprouts, cucumbers, and pickled cabbage. This was super super yummy!! I loved all the flavors. The sauces all worked really well togther. I am usually super picky with my tofu but the braised tofu was very well sauced, I didn't feel like it was bland at all. The vegetables were all cooked very well so they tasted good individually and worked well with the braised tofu and spicy sesame sauce. Highly recommend! Cannot wait to go back. The only fault might be that for 13 dollars, this meal was not very filling. I wish they filled up the bowl a bit more or made it cheaper
google avatar

Olivia H.

Yelp
There's something about Junzi that keeps calling us back. I wouldn't say the bowls are 100% authentic to my childhood, but the combination of saucy flavors on top of some tender chicken and a bed of those fresh, thick noodles feels familiar and comforting. It's quick and convenient, but has enough vegetables included that it feels more balanced than a typical fast food meal. My current favorite bowl: Knife Cut Noodles + Cantonese BBQ Chicken, mixed with Furu Sesame Sauce and lots of veggies, then topped off with the Chili Garlic and Scallion Ginger sauces. I've loved it every time, but would encourage anyone to experiment and see what they like.
google avatar

Andrew N.

Yelp
If you're hungry and need a quick vegetarian-friendly bite, Junzi is the perfect choice. It's assembly-style so you can be in and out in around five minutes. My personal favorite is the hand-cut noodles with tomato and egg sauce. I add tofu, all the veggies, cucumbers, some crunchy shallots, cilantro, and chili oil. The thick noodles are amazing, and the tomato/egg sauce is tangy and flavorful. Sure, the concept of this is extremely simple and you could probably put something similar together at home, but the entire reason you're eating out is probably because you don't have time to cook (or you're like me and you stupidly ran out of ingredients). I've come three times in one week when I was in a pinch, and it's never let me down! Always quick, easy, and reliable.
google avatar

Mikey W.

Yelp
A really great little place to get a bowl of rice or noodles with a bunch of seemingly healthy options to top it with. I got the chicken with a bunch of veggies over a bed of rice and it was exactly what I needed to cure my hangover. I also added an extra side of chili oil which I immediately poured entirely into the bowl which added an incredibly vibrant and fiery spice, so beware and handle with care if you dare! There's also a little common place to eat outside right across the street. Perfect for a nice day out.
google avatar

Colin M.

Yelp
Good enough food to overcome a fairly bad experience. Service was pretty rude (and inattentive when trying to change the order). One of those Chipotle-style "build a bowl" places, but they were out of so many things it was almost amusing. Was able to cobble together a tofu noodle bowl, but no mapo tofu, no chili crisp, no ginger sauce. Hard to tell what was available, you just had to keep trying while the woman making our food told us no. Can't see myself going back despite not minding the meal.
google avatar

Steph Q.

Yelp
Updated to add that --- Junzi expanded their vegan options and now have rice bowls which imo are better than the noodles (!). I also really love their drink menu is pretty nice, including the teas, which are very refreshing. My only gripe is that you can no longer get a la carte tofu, which makes me sad.
google avatar

Constanza T.

Yelp
I can't believe how rude their service is. Me and my 2 friends ordered 3 bowls. They're paying together in one bill, I'm paying my own. But my order took super long to come so I asked them about it. THEY FORGOT ABOUT MY ORDER AND REQUESTED ME TO SHOW MY RECEIPT. I showed my receipt and THEY BEGIN TO QUESTION MY FRIENDS' ORDER ASKING WHERE IS THEIR RECEIPT. The waiter asked in an attitude:"OK, where is their receipts and where are they?"(my friend was in the bookstore next door.) I can't believe for their MISTAKE & SLOW SERVICE, they are questioning my payment??????? Btw this is a Chinese restaurant with no Chinese waiter/waitress and I'm a Chinese customer. DO NOT COME UNLESS YOU WANNA BE HUMILIATED.
google avatar

Masha A.

Yelp
Junzi is one of the few places I looooove getting food from. I make excuses to myself why I shouldn't pickup dinner from my college dining hall just to grab a rice bowl from Junzi! I get their custom rice bowls which allows to pick and choose the add-ons, which is super convenient for me as I pick gluten-free options for some of the add-ons. They have a variety of meat options but my absolute favorites are the Green Pepper Beef and the Cantonese BBQ Chicken. They also have spicy options like Firecracker Chicken (*drooling emoji*) and Vegan options, such as griddled tofu. Another thing is their proportions are huge. Whenever I get a bowl, I barely finish half of it so I end up eating it for my second meal too. Their staff is super friendly and as a matter of fact, I had a chance to meet the owners of the restaurant too! The sweetest people ever! Coincidentally, I made my first order from Junzi on their anniversary! I usually place my orders via UberEats, but I found out that customers can also place orders through Junzi's website which is much convenient and the preparation + delivery takes less than 30 minutes to Yale. Overall, I would recommend Junzi to any food-lover I know! Hope to see a Junzi restaurant in CA soon!
google avatar

Jade E.

Yelp
We were in new haven for the morning and decided to stop in. Junzi is like a chipotle for noodles but don't let that deter you. The noodles were hot and tasty, I decided on the lions head meatballs and my mom had the chicken. Both were hot and fresh and quickly prepared. We are still talking about this place!
google avatar

Pam T.

Yelp
The prices keep going up, but worth it for the flavor and bouncy noodles when there's a deal on Snackpass. I'm obsessed with the Furu Tofu on knife noodles and I get it every single time with as many delicious vegetables as I can! Thanks for having superb vegan options! Pro tip: if you like spice, get the chili oil. It's incredible.
google avatar

Eileen C.

Yelp
I wanted to like junzi, especially since I heard they served Juan bing. However they appeared to have taken the bing off the menu. I ordered the tomato flavored thick noodles with meatball and was not super impressed. They did not have the meatball available so I went with the tofu. It did not have a lot of flavor, although I did like the base tomato flavor. It just didn't carry through the whole dish. The consistency of the noodle was the best part of the dish. I like knife cut noodles for being thick and hearty. I also tried the beef and pepper rice. I liked that this was more flavorful but some of the pieces of beef was burnt. I liked the carrots and cilantro for adding depth to the dish. It wasn't anything special though.
google avatar

Jeanie B.

Yelp
I was skeptical but quickly amazed. Impressed might be an understatement. As you walk in you're greeted by a table that gives directions for ordering (Online through their website). First time ordering get 20% off. 3 categories; Noodles bowl, rice bowl, and salad bowl. My order? Noodle bowl & Rice bowl. What I chose is in the pics. Negatives: chicken was on the dry side, noodles could use a bit more sauce also on the dry side. I had to add sesame oil & dumpling sauce from my pantry. Positives: OMG! The size could literally feed 2 people (that was impressive #1!) But then again I did order extra knife noodles and extra chicken. Regardless, I'm still impressed. The noodles, you can see and taste the quality in them. Delish! The ingredients like cucumber, tofu, bean sprouts, purple cabbage, leeks, scallions, & cilantro were fresh and the bowl full of FLAVOR! The place was bright and cozy. Not much seating; probably enough for 4-6 people but bc of COVID less than that. I would definitely revisit and try the egg tomato one. Mmmmmm mmmmmmm

Yelp
Terrible restaurant. Always give you cheap braised pork when you ordered braised beef. And always miss adds on when you paid for it.

Yelp
Excellent Chinese food. Quite authentic. The knife noodle is my personal favorite. I usually order takeouts but the people there seem nice.

Yelp
Been to Junzi a few times since they've opened. It's pretty solid, and I think the menu has benefitted from being a bit more diverse since they opened. Upping to 4 stars.

Yelp
The portion size to price ratios here are unbalanced and downright in bad taste. If you order a bowl with grilled tofu, you get a full bowl of rice and 4-5 pieces of tofu. The chinese broccoli potion was around 3 pieces for a 'topping'. If you want to pay $15 for a bowl of rice, this is your place. For me, I probably won't return.
