"We're not prone to sweeping declarations, but it's pretty unanimous that this is the best sushi spot in Williamsburg. The sleek interior has a sophisticated air to it that's perfect for a date night when you want to break out the heels."

NYC Sushi Delivery: Restaurants Still Open During Coronavirus - Eater NY

"The eclectic omakase spot in Fort Greene now offers a limited a la carte menu via Caviar. Rolls include staples like spicy tuna, as well as more unique creations like mackerel ginger, and salmon skin cucumber. Pork tonkatsu, mazemen ramen, and deep fried shishitos are also available." - Melissa Kravitz Hoeffner, Eater Staff

Indoor dining is open! They also had outdoor dining too. They don’t take reservations but if one person goes, you can have them put your name and number down, and specify if you want indoor or outdoor dining. I went at 8:15pm on a Friday night, put my name down for two, and they called me around 8:35pm. Incredibly impressed by the quality of sushi. Got the green tea, shrimp/veg tempura, and 2 sushi rolls (eel, spicy tuna) - all were top-notch. The eel in the roll was warm, like it was just smoked (or whatever they do to it). Wasabi is the real deal, no fake stuff. Ginger was also very high quality. Staff was super friendly - I think everyone is Japanese so you know it’s not an “Americanized Japanese” sushi spot. I will definitely be coming back. Thank you for a fabulous experience.

Google
Very cute Fort Greene sushi spot. Overall excellent service and really nice date spot atmosphere. The Asazuke Pickles were a pleasant surprise flavor wise, really enjoyed this dish versus the standard cucumber salad everywhere. I highly highly recommend the small Sashimi assortment, some of the freshest sashimi I’ve had in NYC. What fell short for us were the sushi rolls, we tried the salmon teriyaki, spicy tuna roll, and avo+cucumber roll. They just felt like something we’d get from a bodega or in a mediocre Grubhub order - really different from how fresh and amazing the sashimi was. I would come back and still recommend this location for the vibes and service. Definitely try some sashimi!

Where to come for your Sake fix. So, the place is kinda like a modern-ish izakaya. They have an excellent selection of munchies, ranging from quick bites to whole plates, and all of it excellent. The food *is* stellar, thats for sure, but the real star of the show is the sake. Ken, who mans the bar out front, knows his sake, and they have an excellent selection to pick from. There are quite a few by the glass, but if you can, go for the bottles - they are *varied*, and happy-making across the board. Yes, it is a lot pricey, but then again, that's Williamsburg for you...

The chirashi bowl was a delicious, good sized portion with a nice variety of toppings. The mackerel roll was full of flavor and the wasabi was strong enough to clear out your sinuses. Delivery was well packed and arrived fast. Highly recommended!

Google
Always a great experience. Don't mind the one star ratings about not having omakase anymore, there are enough delicious options to statisfy the pickiest eater. Always the freshest ingredients and honestly, very attentive service. Hands down our go to upscale/chill vibe sushi place in Williamsburg. Keep at it 1or8

Google
Think Japanese Fine Dining Tapas. The vibe is gently upbeat, welcoming to intimate dates with easy conversation. The star of my initial visit was the keenly curated selection of small bites. I can say honestly the grilled octopus was the best cooked I have had in NYC, up there with fresh selections off the coast of Cinque Terre, Italy. While not the first option for the budget limited, this restaurant has the kind of atmosphere that Bjork wished her music evoked. One of chill reflection.

Delicious, fresh sushi. Clearly not your generic sushi restaurant fare. Particularly loved the ginger mackerel roll. Very safe quarantine pickup experience.

Yelp
NYC's dining options are infinite, but '1 or 8' is a must-try! Great quality and service in a small, intimate setting. 1 or 8 offers a range of Japanese cuisine, sushi and light bites. Plus, they also have a stocked bar with beer, wine, sake and cocktails, so you have plenty to choose from! To start the evening off, try one of their house drinks like the Shiso Mojito, a Japanese twist on the classic. Their menu changes, which I always appreciate because it keeps things interesting. If you enjoy sashimi of all kinds, I highly recommend the Chirashi, a daily chef's assortment. Beyond exceptional, 1 or 8 also delivers with noteworthy service while maintaining a professional, yet relaxed atmosphere at the same time. I'm obviously a fan, so if you're in the area give them a try! I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Yelp
Amazing sushi spot around the area. We got about 6 sushi rolls and all of them was fresh and delicious, with amazing fish to rice ratio. Ordered a few appetizers too. Initially wanted the broccoli but it was sold out. We wanted a veggie dish but there weren't too many options on there so we picked the root salad, which wasn't bad, but I probably wouldn't order it again bc I'm not a fan of cold roots. The fish bone/skin dish was also super yummy but very tiny. Save room for the crème brûlée!
google avatar

Yelp
Shiso mojito tastes like a regular mojito, I liked it but if you can save money getting a regular mojito I would recommend that. Broccoli with pistachio was just the right amount of crunchiness and paired really well with pistachio, although I was surprised it was cold. Filling though and great for sharing and having veggies. Eel and cucumber roll tasted very fresh and perfectly balanced, good value for $10. Steamed sable fish was quite good. Service was good. Ambience was great. Great place for a dinner by yourself at the bar, although a little too expensive to be a frequent option.

Yelp
Chirashi was priced $60 or $70, and I added uni for an extra $16. Pretty ordinary selection of fish, quality was decent. The uni was pretty good, but for $16, there were only 4 small pieces. The rice was pretty bland, I prefer more vinegar in my sushi rice, especially with richer fish. Staff was friendly and attentive, vibes were relaxed and great.

Yelp
With great anticipation, I came here for dinner on a Tuesday with a friend. There is no way to make a reservation, and with very few tables in 1or8, we took a chance. There was a party of 3 who arrived literally minutes before we did, and so began the wait. We were allowed to sit indoors at a large wooden table near the entrance engaged in quiet conversation while we waited. It had to be about 20+ minutes of waiting? This is a restaurant where people come to linger, so after the party of 3 was seated, we waited some more. Finally, we were given one of the few tables for 2 outdoors. Then we waited for the waitstaff to come by and take our drink order. The menu is completely online which is the new post-pandemic norm, and it seems the dinner menu is updated daily. We ordered sparkling water which was really small cans of Pellegrino (be prepared to ask for more than 1 or 2). To share, we had the asazuke (nappa cabbage, cucumber, daikon radish, shio koji, yuzu described as "house made pickles" on the menu) to share, and I ordered the grilled mackerel and my friend had the tempura. We opted to split one bowl of rice instead one each. The theme here? We waited again for seemingly a really long time. This might be reassuring if you consider that each dish from the curated menu is prepared lovingly with market fresh ingredients and tradition instead of inefficiency and inexperience. Which is the case here? Hard to say. I found that my mackerel was crispy in the right places and savory where it counts. The seasoning was just right; however, maybe it didn't need to be drowned in all the miso sauce? The dish came with a small dab of "fried eggplant" according to the menu. It was soggy and otherwise characterless. My friend's tempura included kabocha (a type of squash), onion (rings), asparagus, and shrimp. She appreciated the quality of the tempura, but at the end of the meal summed up her experience as, "Good...but I've had better." To go the extra mile, I ordered the honey ice cream, honey crumb, milk shaving dessert. The presentation was beautiful, and this made the whole visit worthwhile. It had an understated flavor and satisfying creaminess without being too sweet. The crunchy bits of honey crumb were a pleasing touch. I had the sense that the restaurant means well, but I was underwhelmed. Please be advised that you will have to wait, wait, wait. I noticed some tables sat talking long after they had paid their bill, so this is a part of it.

Yelp
Vibe: Stopped by here for a meal on a Friday night without reservations and was pretty easily accommodated. The place has both indoor and outdoor seating that looks best suited for smaller groups 2-6. The indoor looked very nice but we decided to sit on the patio with the pup . Staff was very nice but not super helpful in giving us recommendations and was confused about an old or new menu, which I had no idea what she was talking about. Either way the experience wasn't bad and the service was good. Food: was very excited by the menu initially but most of the flavors fell short, in regards to fish freshness and overall taste. Honestly I wish I could tell you what I ordered but nothing was that memorable. I do remember enjoying the salmon skin roll more than all the others (unagi, yellowtail, tuna, ???)My favorite part of the meal was the cheap house sale which was quite memorable lol. Long story short - whatever sushi at a local spot that is overpriced for their taste profile. By no means was the food bad but I'll skip out on this place.

Yelp
Cute neighborhood spot with no wait on a Friday night! It was a pleasant surprise when I saw their patio was open on a late Friday night so stopped in for dinner and had an overall great experience, but unsure if it'll be a go-to sushi spot. The drinks: So affordable! Got their $12 "glass" of nigori and split it with my partner, it ended up being a total of about 5 tasting glasses of sake, perfect for us The food: Some rolls were amazing and others were pretty mediocre. I'd come back to this place to continue finding the amazing rolls and just ordering those! My favs were their mushroom roll, salmon skin, and tuna toro. So so good! We also got their unagi and yellowtail and they fell pretty flat to me. Also got their pickles which were really good and I was surprised at how big this app was! Was expecting it to be just a few pickled veggies. The service: So delightful and thoughtful!!

Yelp
The food here was lovely. Service was professional and attentive, and although we arrived for an early dinner, the place was fully booked on our way out. We were able to split a few plates and ended the night with our own desserts! Seaweed salad, tonkatsu, and more. I had the ice cream and my date had the crème brûlée.

Yelp
Excellent experience overall. As soon as we got to the restaurant we were seated immediately. Plenty of outdoor seating with a good distance from other tables. The waitress was very kind and the food came out pretty fast. We ordered: Shishito Peppers Grilled Octopus Tonkatsu Kale & seaweed salad Nigiri Omakase The shishito peppers were very tasty. I recommend you give it a try. The seasoning was great however I felt the lemon was a bit overwhelming. Grilled Octopus was cooked perfectly however just wish it was seasoned. Even with the sauce it did not have a taste to it. The tonkatsu tasted great. The japanese mustard sauce was spicy so was not able to eat a lot of it. As for the Kale & seaweed salad, it was well mixed and tasted great. The nigiri Omakase tasted great! Just wish some pieces had a bit less wasabi. Had to stop for a few minutes between each piece cause of the wasabi.

Yelp
Absolutely love 1or 8! The sushi is delicate, delicious and authentic. We live in the neighborhood and it's always a great delivery, take out, or night out. Their sake options are delicious and they always have something new and interesting to try. They have outdoor seating and usually there's no wait. It's a neighborhood gem and a great secret!

Yelp
Made a trip across the bridge into beautiful Brooklyn and found this place based on a sushi craving and strong reviews. We stepped into the restaurant and were a little nervous as there weren't many people seated, as we made our way back into the restaurant, we realized there was more life and the front was more of a bar. We started off with a special which was fried chicken dumplings, essentially they took apart the wing, stuffed it with dumpling and then fried the wing. It was killer! Then we had a couple of pieces of nigiri, classic and always good. Then, a spicy tuna roll and a yellowtail roll. Seriously, I'm not being dramatic when I say that this was the best Spicy Tuna roll ever, we ordered 3 of them. This place is good, tucked away in Brooklyn but absolutely worth the visit. Don't forget the Spicy Tuna, I promise you will regret not getting it.

Yelp
What a fancy Japanese restaurant in the middle of Williamsburg! My friends and I came in for omakase at the sushi bar. Overall, it was just okay for me. My favorite sushi piece was the Hokkaido Scallop or Hotate with Shisho and Yuzu. This piece melted in my mouth. Scallop was nice and sweet.

Yelp
Amazing ambiance, great music, friendly service, delicious sushi. The decor is tasteful and the place has such an elevated comfortable vibe. Is definitely now one of my favorites. Try the tuna chutoro and yellowtail sushi.

Yelp
Though I love sushi, I've never been much of a sushi snob... I'll even eat the pre-packaged stuff sometimes (don't @ me). But I have to admit it's a lovely treat to enjoy the high quality stuff once in a while, especially in the creative and unique way that 1 or 8 does it. Though I didn't take part in the omakase, my dining partner and I still got a VERY full meal thanks to the many small dishes we ordered to share. We got the karaage, shishito peppers, kale and seaweed salad, grilled squid, the yellowtalk temaki (which comes with ingredients to make two hand rolls), and a spicy tuna roll. Oh and some rosé of course. If that sounds like a lot for two people, it was, but we demolished it all. Oh yeah, and the sesame parfait for dessert. Out of all of those dishes, my favorites were the kale and seaweed salad (which I thought seemed overpriced on the menu but it's so delightful and a very large portion) and the sushi items. I love the temaki and the cute way it's presented, with those little discs of rice. Eeep! Makes me think that if I return, I'll definitely want to do the omakase as the sushi is really where it's at here. As for the ambiance, it's so much larger than I thought it was going to be on the interior, with a modern white ambiance and open space. It was super quiet and chill on a Friday evening, with some families and couples on dates. The service was great, as well!

Yelp
This place was super cool and trendy with an all white interior, it actually felt very Miami to me. I thought this was a fun experience since Omakase tends to feel very proper and formal, this on the other hand felt like fun Omakase for a younger crowd. My group and I made a reservation for the sushi bar since doing Omakase at the table seems a bit silly to me and our sushi chef Kei was very interactive and was fun to talk to. I enjoyed my meal but the one issue I did find with all the pieces, I felt all the pieces were on the small side and my group left not 100% full. I did the $120 Omakase which came with a little over 20 pieces. The food: Striped Jack or Shima Aji- This is one of my fav fishes and this piece was very nice, I really loved the flavor and the texture was great. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=YOI7_NqhCJFnHCfl2RRK2g&userid=Y_iTTjKvV5hLy-880SZzlA Salt Marinated Blue Fin Tuna- I was a little surprised that this piece was just good. I normally really like blue fin tuna. Golden Eye Snapper or Kinmedai- I really liked this one a lot, this had excellent favor and was a fav. King Salmon from Tasmania- This was another favorite, simply amazing. Horse Mackerel or Aji with Fresh Ginger and Scallion- I normally love this piece but the one here was just good, it was surprisingly more mild in flavor than I am used to. Hokkaido Scallop or Hotate with Shisho and Yuzu- The scallop was so perfectly sweet and the texture was amazing. This was a fav. Medium Fatty Tuna or Chutoro from Spain- The Chutoro is a fav and the one here was really good. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=vIKkMp3gOXFdEr7ct3cG6Q&userid=Y_iTTjKvV5hLy-880SZzlA Jumbo Shrimp Liver Sauce- This was a unique dish, it was the crab liver on top of a beautiful jumbo shrimp, I enjoyed the flavor of this one but it does have a sea funk that could be off putting for some. Big Eye Snapper with Yuzukosho- It's basically Big eye snapper with a yuzu pepper paste. I thought this piece totally worked, it had great texture and flavor. Santa Barbara Uni with Ikura and Shisho- This was so good, it was perfectly balanced. I liked how the salty Ikura paired with the sea urchin, very good. Japanese Fresh Water Eel or Unagi- I normally love eel and the texture here was nice but I couldn't help feel that the eel was a tad fishy. Grunt Fish- I eat a ton of sushi but I never heard of Grunt Fish but I am a fan. It was really nice, it kinda looked like Striped Jack to me. Sockeye Salmon- Great as usual, so velvety. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=qIRse2R3kZFV6v69_eaycg&userid=Y_iTTjKvV5hLy-880SZzlA Yellowtail Belly- This was excellent, this was a fav and it tasted like butter, no it actually tasted like butter. Nom nom Japanese Snapper or Madai with Shiso and Sesame Seeds- This was such a perfect pairing. Butter Fish- This had really nice texture, the flavor was good but it kinda reminded me of eel for some reason. Amberjack Belly or Kanpachi- One of my favorite fishes and this was exceptional, this was a fav. Baby Sardine or Shirasu with Quail Egg- I don't normally like any Sardine and this was no exception, this was my least favorite. It was really fishy to me. Chopped Chutoro with Otoro Pickled Radish and Scallion- This was so unique and I really enjoyed the flavor, the pickled radish pops with flavor and pairs well with the fish. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=cqMCocDdaH53-9PsLrTeyg&userid=Y_iTTjKvV5hLy-880SZzlA Japanese Striped Bass- It was really nice flavor and texture, but it was more chewy than I expected. Baby Sardine with Crumbled Egg Yolk- It was unique but any sardine is fishy and I am not a fan. Second piece that I didn't care for. Hokkaido Uni- Not the prettiest piece of Uni I have seen but the Hokkaido Uni was excellent. This was a fav. Tamago- The last piece was the sweetened Japanese omelette and it was good, nothing amazing but good.

Yelp
This strange name is from Japanese phrase Ichi ka bachi, means challenging your luck. It took me a while to get the meaning since we don't use this phrase that often anymore. Their Japanese dishes are all superb! I was really impressed by their elaborate cooking and display. Shishito peppers were plump and fresh, best I ever had even in Japan or Spain where it's very popular, too. Kimpira was tender and mild, too mild for me. I like strong soy sauce and sugar plus chili taste better. Broiled Saba( mackerel) was juicy and fresh. Wish it came with daikon oroshi ( shredded? radish ) Tonkatsu ( pork cutlet) was not sliced. Wondered why! Also not much cabbage ( must for Japanese) Salmon skin cucumber role was very tiny and not much salmon skin in it. For the price it is wimpy. Rose wine by the glass $9 was cool and easy to go with our food. The service was polite and professional. We ate outside, bit chilly, so hope to sit inside ( looked very elegant) very soon. Also a little bit more easy reading menu on the glass window and store name. Too quiet PR around this busy restaurant row area.

Yelp
This used to be one of my favorite sushi spots. Just praying for these cats now. Still love seeing my favorite waitress, I forget her name, been there forever though. May you get the collar again and some new employees, Amen

Yelp
All I wanted was to think 1 or 8 was great. Not just because I love rhyming, but because I prefer fantastic dinners to mediocre meals. Don't get me wrong; there were definitely highlights to our meal: The large space hidden behind a seemingly small bar is gorgeous. It's clean, and vibrant, and we felt primed for a stellar meal. Our appetizers were also excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed the fried chicken, the dumplings, and more...all satisfying and delicious. Unfortunately, the sushi is supposedly the star of the show here, and it was nothing if not underwhelming. I suppose we could be somewhat at fault because we didn't opt for the much-praised omakase option, but if the place is high quality, that excellence should extend to the maki, the nigiri, and across the board. Even more frustrating was that the service was perfunctory and inattentive. The servers simply forgot about us on multiple occasions. I can appreciate that they might be extremely busy on a Saturday evening, but we were forced to actually flag someone down after 15 minutes to order. When we finally did, the woman who I suppose was slated to be our waitress got visibly angry at the man we tapped, took back the table...and then proceeded to again ignore us for the rest of the meal. Quite simply, especially at this price point, I have to expect both the sushi and the service to be much better.

Yelp
This restaurant lives up to the hype. The food is fresh, delicious and beautiful. The venue is light and airy and spacious. It was a wonderful experience being there. The Chirashi is really tasty and they made it so every bite was perfect. Perfect amount of rice to fish or egg. The portions were just a little bit too small, and they were so delicious that I felt like I could eat three times the amount that was given. The handrolls also had the same issue. Just a little bit too little food but incredibly flavorful, fresh and tasty. I got the uni and it made me feel like I was in heaven. The staff were friendly, although when we were there they seemed a little overwhelmed. The waitress forgot an order, then when someone else got our order, we were brought the wrong order, but regardless of the mistake of pieces, the food was delicious. I loved the barley tea!

Yelp
Amazing atmosphere food drinks and staff. Would highly recommend the octopus, which was delightful. The sushi is so fresh and the drinks were amazing. I still can't believe what a lovely wait Yet another stellar dining experience at 1 or 8: Lychee martinis Shishito peppers Shrimp dumplings Grilled octopus Ramen noodles Out of this world!

Yelp
Read so many good reviews and was extremely excited to try their omakase. When the first half of the omakase came, I almost stood up and walked out of the door. They were the tiniest nigiri I've ever seen in my life! Are they made for barbies? Each piece was like the size of my thumb! (Btw-I'm petite) and I started looking for other restaurants nearby that I can go afterward during the meal. The quality of the fish was good though and the seasoning was simple. The yellowtail collar was pretty big though (but it was $24), and it was pretty tender. I especially love the radish dipped with soy sauce. We felt that the food wasn't enough and flipped through the pictures on yelp and decided to order the fancy "1 or 8 roll. It was NOT a good decision at all. Besides the uni and salmon roe, the flavor of the roll itself was not right. The vegetables inside sort of threw it off. The food isn't bad, but I bet you can find something better with similar price range in manhattan.

Yelp
Proudly and consecutively being rated as the Michelin recommended restaurant, 1 or 8 has been sitting quietly on my to-try list for a long time, before today I decided to give a shot, by myself. Opted to be seated at the sushi bar, so that I could see Chef Yoshida-san make the pieces. Not having a big appetite, I decided to go with the smallest option - 10 pieces Omakase. Each piece was carefully and artfully executed, with just the perfect amount of rice. I especially enjoyed the newly added sweet shrimp piece, as well as my all time favorite Hokkaido uni. Fish were sourced from three different Japanese fish markets, as well as local markets. I greatly enjoyed my sushi pieces, as well as the grilled octopus with Brussels sprout from the kitchen. I could literally feel that chef Yoshida-san has put his heart executing each piece, and tasting them made me feel nothing but in heaven.

Yelp
The dinner I had with my friend, who was kind enough to share with me that this restaurant existed, was absolutely fantastic. This very may well have been the best sushi I have ever eaten in my life and I very much look forward to returning. The service was impeccable and atmosphere made me want to do a chill tango.

Yelp
I ordered delivery from here and it came quickly and without any problems. The sushi was pretty good but I really expected to be wowed and I was just content (#imclearlyspoiled). The menu is pretty limited, which I saw as proof that 1or 8 was legit and the fish was fresh etc but the meal wasn't super memorable. For the price and reputation I expected more but still - 4 stars and a really solid (and even maybe one of the better) sushi choice in this neighborhood.

Jacqueline S.

Yelp
Upon first walking in, I was immediately drawn by the atmosphere and a great vibes. We ordered a miso soup, a sashimi plate, and three rolls to share. I myself do not eat sashimi typically and prefer sushi, but I tasted a bit of the tuna sashimi which was incredibly fishy. The three rolls we ordered were bad- the rice was stale and the seaweed was chewy. The two of us ate one piece each of the three rolls and couldn't eat any more of it. Maybe it was an off night, but it was not for us. That being said, the wait staff was friendly, attentive, and efficient.

Yelp
Well I'll start off by saying THANKS 1 or 8 for ruining sushi for me. By which I mean that now I probably won't be able to have it anywhere else without crying and wishing I was here instead. Met up with a friend here for dinner as she's been here quite a few times and loves it. It's very swish indeed and feels very cool as soon as you walk in - I was glad I'd dressed up a bit for it! Staff were very attentive and friendly, efficiently taking our drink orders and getting us started with some edamame, after being horrified that we originally didn't want to have a starter. My kind of people :P Went for the omakase sushi and I can honestly say it's the best sushi I've ever had in my entire life. Each bit of fish was melt-in-the-mouth and I had to force myself to eat my sushi like a civilised human being because it was just so good! It was also the most expensive sushi I've ever had in my life, but if you're already in NYC you're probably all too aware how pricey things can be. (And I regret absolutely nothing!) The atmosphere is really chilled and we had a great time catching up and squeeing over the food. If I'm ever back in New York I'd come back here in a heartbeat!

Yelp
Delicious fresh sushi in the heart of Williamsburg! Loved everything- we got the Shishito Peppers, Shrimp Dumplings and Chirashi special, along with a salmon jalapeño roll. Want to come back and try more! They were also very accommodating to my friends gluten allergy.

Yelp
Came here for a quick snack in the bar area. There were a lot of families and kids coming in through the door on a Sunday night which means this place must be family friendly as well! The inside area is partitioned away from the bar. The bar area in the front was very classy. The most memorable were the oysters as the oysters themselves tasted amazingly fresh and the sauce was such a unique flavor. Rather than the standard sauce provided for oysters they created their own miso blend

Yelp
Just had the omakase at the new location on DeKalb. They escort you to the secret back counter with 6 seats. Here the sushi chef will prepare the best fish from Japan. I would say this is the best sushi I've had in Brooklyn. I've traveled to Japan and this is on par with some of the best. The service is fantastic, and the chef made sure we were happy. Highly recommend!

Yelp
3.5 stars overall taking into consideration portion size, price and the food 5 stars for the cooked foods and service 3 stars for the sushi We ordered the omakase sushi course, oxtail pappardelle, grilled octopus, honey and milk ice cream and the sesame parfait. Service was great and very attentive without being overbearing. We started with the omakase which was honestly very disappointing. The sushi was very tiny and the fish they served was nothing special. It was very fresh but as a chef's choice course it seemed very ordinary. A few of the pieces actually tasted pretty awful... the scallop with smoked sea salt was the worst and left a very bitter after taste in my mouth. The chopped mackerel with sesame and ginger was also a really weird combination and left a very unpleasant taste in my mouth. Everything else was OK and not memorable. On the other hand the cooked dishes were phenomenal! The grilled octopus was melt in your mouth and cooked to perfection. The oxtail pappardelle was really amazing. Loved the fresh pasta and the mushrooms paired with the oxtail ragu. The milk and honey ice cream was really awesome but the sesame parfait was a miss for me since the sesame ice cream was way too strong. Beware that portion sizes are incredibly small here! Overall a really nice restaurant for a nice date and I would come back but only for the cooked items.

Yelp
KenScale: 8.5/10 Manhattan has no shortage of awesome sushi places, but it's often hard to imagine Brooklyn having a legitimate one. As much as I relish the culinary ingenuity of many restaurants in Brooklyn, those places tend to be more like farm-to-table New American seasonal dining establishments than a serious sushi counter. Once I entered 1 or 8 on a quiet street of Williamsburg away from the crowd probably imbibing daytime drinks at the Wythe Hotel's rooftop bar, it felt more like a classic pan-Asian trap where you go out more for the night-out experience than dining. Well, I'm pretty sure that chef Kazuo Yoshida, in his white golf cap sitting behind the sushi counter, would beg to differ because the sushi offerings coming from his masterful craftsmanship are no jokes. My dining companion and I went for omakase options at $90 per person (there are also other options at $60 or $120+ per person). The meal started with a bang. The assortment of sashimi, consisting of yellowtail, blue fin tuna, octopus, salmon, saba mackerel and red snapper, was all very fresh and delightful. The texture of each piece already signaled that I would have an awesome experience. Then came striped jack and tuna that were magnificent in its own way. What I can see from chef Yoshida is pride and confidence that oozes throughout his deft preparation of each piece. Tasmanian king salmon is often one of the pieces that doesn't shine compared to others at a sushi joint, but the one at 1 or 8 was quite delicious, and the signature piece of horse mackerel worked beautifully with shiso and scallions on top. Other stand-out pieces include o-toro and the memorable combination of Santa Barbara sea urchin and salmon roe. Sometimes, I felt the flavor or texture was slightly off. There was nothing wrong with blue fin tuna that we ordered after the regular course was finished in terms of its freshness, but I was left wondering whether it could've been better with more moderate seasoning, while flounder with plum on top was simply too citrusy. Scallops and jumbo shrimp with miso had funky texture that I had not expected, and the tamago felt more like an afterthought than a standout piece on its own. Still, there is no question that chef Yoshida's dedication to the craft is quite evident with the way he carefully selects the freshest ingredient of the day and showcases his skills. We've had a chance to do some small talks with him as well; it turns out he came to NYC from Japan more than 24 years ago and he's been honing his craft ever since. I had no problem getting a reservation (sushi counter is only available on the phone) about a week in advance, and the early dinner time (we showed up at 6 p.m.) was pretty empty although the counter started to fill pretty quickly after 7 p.m. There is full bar from the restaurant and you would do well to complement your omakase with a bottle of sake. As noted, the décor and vibe of 1 or 8 seemed a little too trendy to take seriously, but that didn't affect my dining experience at the counter. I would definitely love to see Brooklyn have more legitimate sushi counters; chef Yoshida's counter at 1 or 8 can definitely stand on its own against the heavyweights of Manhattan.

Yelp
Wow, I love this place! When we walked in, I was shocked at how empty it was especially because the food was amazing! The octopus was really good, the sushi was so fresh and the drinks are great. The staff is on top of it. I definitely recommend it for a first date even though I went when I was single af.

Yelp
I would give this place a 3.5/5. I definitely recommend this place to those who like the traditional, simple omakase. This is my second omakase experience, first being Sushi Dojo in NYC. I definitely compared my experience here with sushi Dojo which may be why I was disappointed. Went for a 15 piece omakase for $90 and felt unsatisfied afterwards. Service was good, the decor was beautiful (clean, white). The only sushi pieces that I truly remembered was the sweet shrimp, toro, and scallop. At Sushi Dojo, each sushi piece gave me the "wow! Delicious!". Each also had a generous amount of fish. As for here, I felt 1 or 8 was being slightly more skimpy on the fish. I guess I felt as if the omakase was not worth $90 based on my previous experience with Dojo (which gave me free extra pieces too). I guess my overall experience here is nothing close from my first omakase experience. I would come back to do 10 piece but nothing more.

Yelp
When I first sat down, I noticed that the place is pretty roomy. The seating weren't too compact which I like. The waitress was really nice. She did not rush us to order. I got the wagyu as a starter. It was refreshing. As for the entree, I got the sashimi omakese. Each pieces were so fresh. As usual, I love the salmon the most. I noticed that they have omakese seating. I would definitely go back to try it. Overall, this place is definitely family and kids friendly. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Wonderful food and service! The fish is always fresh and the temaki presentation is lovely and quite fun. The appetizers are all interesting and delicious. Authentic and creative. Check out the specials menu they have. Look out for the yellowtail collar - great addition for a big group. Another plus is that the green tea is brewed properly. They'll refill your pot about 3 times (until the tea leaves lose flavor).

Yelp
Date night for Stacey and I last night @1or8 - and we went home very happy with the night. For the omakase selection, grill octopus, pork-belly bun, two rolls, a two desserts (and three Sapporo beers), we paid $266 (more than 20% tip as we have excellent services from the staff). The omakase items are small but are very tasty. There is real wasabi (it tastes soooo much better than green paste) which was amazing. The space is large, very white but is warm and a happy environment. On a Saturday night at 7.15 we had a 2.5hour meal and were never rushed, always welcomed. It was not full and not empty. Service was great - very attentive and educational, and all the people worked as a team. The food was excellent, hand made and plated beautifully. Again, great meal at 1 or 8. Only complaint could be that the beer (Sapporo) seemed small for the order.

Yelp
One of the best Japanese restaurant in Brooklyn. Price to quality ratio is very good. The Karaage (fried chicken) is delicious and not greasy. The Japanese staff were friendly, hugely accommodating and efficient. Overall, this is a solid Japanese fare experience. I highly recommend

Yelp
This place surpassed my expectations. First we ordered the lychee & vodka cocktail which was very good & refreshing. Then we got the shrimp dumplings & Shashido peppers and they were both so good. Then we got the grilled octopus & ramen noodles and we're blown away by the amazing flavors and quality of the food. I would definitely recommend this place & will be coming back:). The staff was also very attentive and constantly checking in on our table and clearing empty plates.

Yelp
A hidden gem! The fish is always crazy fresh here, and the service is always very polite and attentive. The specials of the day have never disappointed. We always end up ordering more after we've already eaten, it's just that good! Sit at the back bar and order omakase, or sit at the front bar and order small dishes with sake tastings.

Yelp
Went here for a date with a chef and we sat at the omakase bar. Went late enough so it was dead. He got all chef-y on the sushi chefs. Laughed when the chefs chef-ed him back. Sushi was AMAZING. Rice was nice and warm and fish was perfectly portioned.

Yelp
Staff is very friendly and warm! It took a few more minutes for my order to be ready for pick up but that was because there were many orders. There weresome cool tunes playing over the speakers and the restaurant smelled soo good. I couldn't wait to try eat what was smelling. I received my order, no more than 5 minutes after I had arrived, the woman again very nice and friendly. I rushed home fast to eat the food without having to reheat. I opened the opened the boxes and saw and smelled the most beautiful prepared dishes, even for takeout. I then saw smelled and tasted what those extra few minutes were for and it was for the quality. The fish in the chirashi was so fresh. Not a hint of fishy order or taste, beautifully arranged in layers on top the rice. So good. Unagi cucumber, very tasty. I liked the additional eel sauce. Tonkatsu also very delicious crispy light pablo flake, and once sauce with a bit spice and mustard good but made my eyes water a bit . The mackerel and eggplant have a nice smokey flavor of the grill This is now a place I will definitely be ordering from. I cannot wait to try more of the menu, and sit in the restaurant for the dining experience. Thank you

Yelp
I haven't tried many omakases in NYC but 1 or 8 TOPS my list! I took my friend here for her birthday and wow what an amazing dining experience! I fell in LOVE with the decor - all white, minimalistic yet trendy. We opted for the sushi bar (always sit at the sushi bar - it changes the whole experience) and had the wonderful pleasure of tasting Chef Kai's dishes. I'll try my best to re-capture the night - We started off with the scallops. The dish stayed true to the restaurant's motif - minimalistic beauty. Perfectly seared scallops with 3 different types of uni in a bed of this amazing ponzu-butter sauce. Absolutely divine! Now on to the omakase. EVERYTHING was delicious! My favorites were the chu-toro, king salmon, scallop, botan-shrimp, sea urchin and the mackerel. We each ordered the o-toro just to splurge a little and I'm so glad we did. I can't believe how buttery it was! Just something that stands out - my friend and I were talking about how we don't really like ginger and Chef Kai overheard this and mentioned to one of the other chefs to lay off on the ginger for one of the sushi pieces. TALK ABOUT ATTENTIVE! Another shout out to Stefan for all his recommendations. He was so informative about EVERYTHING - travel, sake, food and other places to visit around the area. I truly had an amazing time here and I can't WAIT to go back! 1 or 8 is also in a great neighborhood so be prepared to check out some amazing bars!
