Navy Yard Watering Hole Justin’s Cafe Has Closed - Eater DC

"Justin’s Cafe, located in Southeast at 1025 1st Street SE, was a sports bar popular among Washington Nationals fans. Known for its pizzas, sandwiches, and summertime frose, the venue also hosted costume parties, including a planned Halloween party. After eight years, it announced its closure on October 24, encouraging local businesses to hire its staff." - Tierney Plumb

Yelp
Service was super fast and restaurant with clean with a modern vibe. However, I do not recommend getting the phone with tripe in it. The tripe did not taste like it was properly cleaned and faintly tasted of manure. I've had pho several times before in other locations across the country and have not had this experience, so I caution whoever is considering ordering tripe. On the other hand, my friend ordered the chicken pho and absolutely loved it. Her beer was great too. Hope this helps!

Yelp
These guys are doing pho right. I'm new to DC and only out here for a few months on work, and man do these guys make me feel welcome. Very inviting with delicious food. It's a bit pricey I'm my opinion but it seems like that's just how the Navy yard area is in general. Get the steak and brisket pho, and you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Overall this was a mediocre experience. It took more than 30 minutes for 1 bowl of pho to come out after ordering. (I know the exact time it took because you get charged for the meal when ordering and the Apple Pay notification was at 32min ago when my bowl arrived). I am aware that a dinner rush can cause some delays, but on a Monday and with only 3 menu items, you'd think they'd have a more efficient system. The mandatory order-by-phone system is also very impersonal and a bit depressing, especially when sitting at the bar, where normally things are more social and friendly. Because one has to order from your own phone's Toast app/browser, you also have to pay and decide on a tip at the beginning. This is also a suboptimal experience IMO, as I had no idea how the service would be at the time I was asked to pay. I will say that when the pho finally arrived, it was nicely presented in high-quality ceramic and the lime/jalapeño side dish was neatly organized. The bartender was quick to fill waters which was appreciated. The main waiter / manager did thank me for my patience after I inquired about the half hour wait after ordering, but it would have been nice to have my plate / utensils set in advance of the food coming out as a sign confirming that my order would be coming out eventually. Any communication really would have been appreciated.

Yelp
What a surprise to have this Pho place in Navy Yard! I've been coming to DC for work on a yearly basis and stay nearby, so it's great to have a pho place within walking distance. I was craving pho and didn't want to take the subway north to grab pho from other restaurants. Initially, I tried calling - no answer and it said that the phone number wasn't taking calls. Then I tried googling the restaurant to place an order. The toast website that popped up first also wasn't accepting orders. I ended up deciding to do a hail mary and walk the five minutes. It's a little bit easy to miss because it's small/narrow. The QR code at the restaurant worked, but the servers had to note internally that it was a takeout. The menu doesn't have a lot of variety but I got the chicken pho with dark meat. There was very limited staff - 2 waiters and 1 chef? And this was on a Thursday night when the restaurant was 3/4 full. I ended up waiting a bit longer than I anticipated. Aside from the wait, the food was surprisingly good. Yes, I had low expectations because there wasn't a number in the restaurant name and the technological glitches I had earlier. The soup was warming and full of flavor. Noodles tender and the meat was not dry. Overall, a pretty good meal for a restaurant that is a short walk away. Staff was also nice and did their best to speed things up.

Yelp
This spot is a little too fancy to have "Junkies" in their name. We came here for some Pho on our second night in DC. The downside is that you need to order via your mobile phone. I ordered a Meatball (Pho Bo Vien) Pho which wasn't on the menu. We had to flag the waiter and ask for assistance. The broth and noodles were delicious. The meatballs tasted clean but rather rubbery/overcooked. We also ordered egg rolls which were delicious but unfortunately only came with 2 which were cut in half. We had to order another plate to satisfy our craving. These were extremely crunchy and flavorful. Service feels like it is non-existent until you put your order in. Aside from the mobile ordering, the meal hit the spot.

Yelp
My friend heard that Pho Junkies had one of the best phos in DC, so we stopped by for dinner last Tuesday. You can order via Toast by scanning the QR code that's unique for every table. PHO JUNKIES - ALL THE MEATS - 19.75 Almost $20 for a bowl of pho is quite pricy. They do give you a good amount of meats, though. The brisket and eye round steak were tender and juicy. I enjoyed the tendon a lot too. The broth was quite good and rich, and the noodles had a nice chew and texture that didn't dilute the broth with starch. However, the bowl was pretty small and I can't say it was worth the amount we paid for. After tax and tip, I paid closer to $25, which is almost double the amount I'd pay if I went to Pho 75 in Rosslyn. Pho Junkies is definitely one of the best phos I've had in the area, but not sure if it's worth it.

Yelp
My friend and I ventured into Pho Junkies before a Nats game craving a warm bowl of Pho! I was so happy to find a pho spot in Navy Yard - a bit of a challenge when in the city. The ambiance is very calming and relaxing. We were seated instantly and scanned the QR code at the table for our menus. I went with the Steak Pho and was not disappointed! The broth was so flavorful and paired exceptionally well with the noodles and chives. The spice blend and fresh vegetable toppings throughout the pho bound the rare steak in perfectly. Loved the option for extra limes and jalapeños on the side! I want to take a moment to appreciate the staff! All were so kind and accommodating throughout our meal. I had to charge my phone and finish up a task for work, which was a bit stressful. However, the Pho Junkies staff made sure I had an outlet to charge my computer and provided us the best seating to feel comfortable. Great service! Will surely be back to enjoy a bowl of pho very soon!

Yelp
I LOVE PHO!!! In D.C. for a work conference and walked down the street for dinner by myself. This pho spot is perfect for that, the service was great even though it's intended to be hands-off. You do have to order online through a QR code but that was no big deal. The spring rolls were delicious! The pho broth was also delicious but the start of the show was the tofu. I wish my pho spot back home served their tofu like this - it was amazing.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the taste of the broth and thought that it came out. Probably the hottest I've ever had. I do appreciate the order and pay for everything and be done, but I feel like I wanted some dessert and if they had that where I could see it readily available I would've ordered it. The staff were super attentive to all of my Needs especially coming around every minute or so to fill up my water. I will definitely be coming here again and I highly recommend this place. My total price for about $.20 shy of $20.

Yelp
This place was so fire the food was so good. I honestly don't know how anyone could rate this below 5 stars.

Yelp
This place is connected to the apartment complex on the corner so don't make the same mistake as me and get trapped looking like a fool! Don't ask how I know. I found the staff to be super attentive and respectful. The pho was delicious and a good portion. Priced well. I would come again.

Yelp
Perfection Personified Amazing Food Quality, Great Customer Service! You can customize your order by scanning the QR code. The food comes out so quickly. I love it here

Yelp
I tried it today upon learning they now open at 12-2 for lunch, since i'm usually on way home before their 5p dinner service. Staff were very nice and courteous, almost too deliberate but adequate. Inside was minimalistic just industrial type bar with high chairs and simple wall bench and tables. Does look like a sports bar, masculine and clean! Now for the Pho bowl I had- I ordered all the meats, bowl was $21 plus tax & tip about $27 total. Bowl had lots of meats and well-proportioned noodles. It could use more greens but more importantly that the soup should, I mean should be hotter (temp wise) and should have more flavor. It was bland and a bit bitter at the same time-my after taste was more bitter, lingered in my tongue after i completely finished the bowl. Comparably to other Pho places in Nova (i.e., Pho 98 & Phonemal) where the clear soups are more flavorful, Pho Junkies missed it just a tad during my visit, which is to say it was bland, a bit bitter, and never mind they charge 30% more for a small bowl but it's DC, so... Still, I saw formidable yelpers gave this place 5 stars so i'll keep an open mind. Also pulled up higher score because the staff were welcoming and nice, so a 4 (vice 3 my initial thought) but herés hoping for more pronounced flavor of that soup next time!!!

Yelp
How to describe my favorite place for a week night meal? Quiet, professional, great service, delicious food and a wonderful place to unwind after a long day. They just extended their hours and I'm so excited! I love coming to Pho Junkies after coming home from a long day at work and not wanting to cook. As soon as you choose a spot to sit, you are quietly greeted and served water. Order your food at your own pace from the QR code on the table. And then wait for your food. It's a small operation, so the busier it is, the longer the wait but for those of us who live in the area, that's ok. It's a quiet, clean and nice environment to enjoy conversations with a friend, read a book or enjoy a nice glass of wine or beer while you wait. And it's great to be able to leave as quickly or as slowly as you want since you've already paid! Plenty of space for singles, groups of two or four to eat. Lots of people come to grab some take out on the way home. Did I mention the food is delicious? One of the best parts, besides the fact that the broth is delicious and the ingredients are fresh and perfect is the ability to customize the pho. For the picky eater or the person who wants extra everything, this is the place to come. My favorite is all the meats but pho your way is a good way to go too!

Yelp
Awesome Pho spot! The price point is a bit high, but the food was very good. The broth tasted great, and the beef was super tender. Would likely come back here again, but expect a slightly expensive meal (over $20)

Yelp
Best pho in DC! Very attentive service and a beautiful space. Wish they were open on weekends.

Yelp
really delicious pho and great service. will go back immediately for their spring rolls.

Yelp
Stopped in on a Thursday evening with my wife. Great pho in a nice dining room. The good: the pho here is the best we have had in a while the menu and ordering process is automated by QR code this gives a lot of options to customize your order but do remember to have a phone with you. The dining room and service here is very clean and nice which was not fully expected by the sign out front. The spring rolls come with a real fish sauce, this can be kind of hard to find as a lot of places seem to sub this out for some other sweet sauce that's less polarising but I loved the inclusion. The mediocre: this might be a selling point for some but it was fairly quiet when we stopped in and overly sterile. Full automated ordering, payment and hand sanitiser set out. Again this was one visit on a slow day and for those that appreciate these considerations this may be perfect. I tend to prefer more human interaction.

Yelp
Pho Junkies is truly a neighborhood gem that does not get the attention and accolade it deserves. My husband and I each ordered the Pho Your Way with rare steak and brisket. The broth was simple, but so flavorful and the cilantro, Thai basil, scallions were extra fresh and provided the perfect balance. To share, we got the spring rolls too. I am not huge on pork meat, but wow these shrimp and pork spring rolls were divine. I think we found our go-to spot for winter.

Yelp
I've been dying to try this place since it's walking distance to me and the hours make it seem so elusive. It's a small restaurant but the ambiance is really nice and they had great music playing in the background. The service was amazing and attentive. The pho was just okay to me. The broth lacked seasoning and maybe it's because I was expecting more since they have such high reviews but It's honestly nothing special.

Yelp
Ordered inside the store for takeout. The servers were very kind and gave me water while I waited for my food (took about 10-15 mins to be ready after I ordered). When I got home, the pho was steamy and perfectly hot. As far as the taste, it was a solid bowl of pho and if you have a craving it will for sure hit the spot. However, I do wish that for takeout orders they package the broth separately from the noodles/meat because when I got down to eating it, the noodles were a bit soft for my liking. Overall great place and I will be coming back (just wish they had online ordering available & were open on the weekends)!

Yelp
As a newcomer to DC, finding a go-to pho spot was a top priority to fill the void left by my hometown favorite. Enter Pho Junkies, which swiftly claimed that coveted spot with its delicious offerings. The chicken pho, my usual order, never fails to impress with its flavorful broth and perfectly cooked noodles. What's more, the service is efficient and hassle-free--you can conveniently place your order through your phone, ensuring a seamless dining experience. The ambiance at Pho Junkies is refreshingly casual, allowing the focus to remain squarely on the mouthwatering fare. Whether you're craving a comforting bowl of pho or eager to explore other menu options, this place delivers consistently. In summary, Pho Junkies comes highly recommended for its delectable pho, solid service, and laid-back atmosphere. It's quickly become my new pho haven in DC, and I have no doubt it'll win over any pho enthusiast who walks through its doors.

Yelp
I don't usually have a favorite when it comes to pho joints but I can comfortably say Pho Junkies is up there. I cannot believe how much I loved the brisket and fatty brisket, which I didn't even order for myself - I got those two meats along with meatballs for my lil twins to share a bowl. I cheaped out and just got the rare steak, which was delicious in itself. But for anyone trying them for the first time, I say don't cheap out like I did, get the good stuff! I'd want to try more next time. There are also chicken and vegetarian options though I don't know if I'll get to those since I really liked the meats and I'm not even one who typically craves meat. As I said above, I came over with my twins. My husband and I were so tickled that they got kid friendly chopsticks and a small soup spoon!! This made it so special for them. My daughter likes pho soup but only wants it with rice. Unfortunately there is no rice here. No rice plate like you might see at other Vietnamese restaurants. Here you'll find only pho and some delicious spring rolls yummmmmm. Anyway, since the soup was good, my girl was glad to just use her small soup spoon. We brought home the leftover broth and she happily ate up the soup with rice we already had. Along with the food being good, the joy of having kid sized tableware, and the nice ambiance, we also experienced great customer service! Our server was gracious with setting down all items on the table and was also interactive with our toddlers. Our foods came out in timely manners and our waters were always filled. We also got extra napkins which ya know every family table with kids need a bunch!

Yelp
They're finally open again! Was pleasantly surprised to see that pho junkies was open again. We were able to walk in and get a table for 2, but it is recommended to get reservations if you can--they've been taking reservations and their kitchen will get busy. We were happy to see spring rolls added to the menu. It was delicious. They're cut into half and topped with the pickled veggies and mint. I would say "bite sized", but it's a pretty hefty size. Pho is on point, as usual. Got a custom one with fatty brisket, tendon, and round eye. The broth is rich and delicious. Got extra veggies and they were fresh. The one server is so attentive and kind. He is hustling from table to table. I really appreciate the restaurant is very clean and the tableware they use is earthy and feels authentic. We plan to go back more now that they're open again!

Yelp
Leaving Pho Junkies feels similar to leaving the spa- I'm relaxed and content. It's one of the cleanest restaurants I've ever seen and the food is delicious. I've tried a few different pho's here and the fresh ingredients makes all the difference. I could go on about the food, but the service and atmosphere is just as enjoyable. Maybe the most attentive service I've ever had? They anticipate exactly what we need, and leave us to enjoy and hangout.

Yelp
It was very good. The broth and chicken were both great! Service was good and it came out pretty quick. Ordered online and it was very easy. Good atmosphere

Yelp
I've been fortunate to enjoy a lot of restaurants from hole in the walls to Michelin. I was not expecting the best Pho and service I have had in a long while. I was extremely impressed by the level of service given here, you can tell there is commitment to giving the best experience to each diner. I walked in, dined alone, and felt very attended to. Staff made me feel at home and out of the corner of my eye, I could see they paid attention to each diner to make sure everyone had what they needed, without asking. Don't get me started on the broth, one of the best I have tasted. If you can dine here, do it, you will NOT be disappointed

Kris D.

Yelp
I used to order from their food truck often when I worked in an office building near by. They're restaurant quality is consistent with the truck! The pho is delicious and succulent. Highly recommend!

Dabs N.

Yelp
The customer service was great as soon as we walked in the door. Customer service was excellent throughout the dining experience as well. They were very attentive, consistent with making sure you had all that you needed, very respectful, maintained a clean environment. The way you ordered was efficient and easy. We tipped with our payment online but I had to tip extra because of how good the customer service and food was. The food was perfect, best pho I've had, really impressed. The menu was super simple and the amount of food you chose was the perfect amount. The taste was delicious. I will definitely keep coming back. I recommend this place to everyone.

Matt M.

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch today. Very good pho. Quick service. Nice spring rolls. Spot wasn't as easy to find - on the side of the building, so be sure to walk up First to find the entrance.

Yelp
Good. A little pricey for a bowl of pho. But it's hard to get good Vietnamese in the city. So I didn't feel cheated.

Eldon A.

Yelp
Amazing quality and great customer service. The only thing I would complain bout was the tofu, but I'm not a big fan of fried tofu anyways.
google avatar

Yelp
Visiting in DC and have tried a couple Pho places and this one is the best one! Easy ordering process plus great customer service.
google avatar

Yelp
Yum yum! Great place for Pho. You order from the table on your phone, pay and tip immediately, and they still provide great service. I will be back.
google avatar

Joe P.

Yelp
One of the top pho spots, for sure (by broth). While you order digitally, even sitting at the bar, their service is excellent. Yes, it's price point is higher than most other pho, but Navy Yard rents are too.
google avatar

Oliver A.

Yelp
Pho in DC is expensive and this is the only one that's worth every penny. The meats are so fresh and delicious. The broth is so good it'd make a Vietnamese mom proud. I highly recommend this place. Also def get the spring rolls. Some of the best I've ever had in my life. The ambiance is perfect. The service is five star. If you're used to going to an Asian restaurant where they lack service bc they know their food is good, this place does not subscribe to that playbook. The food is top notch and so is their service!!

Yelp
I remember when this brand only existed as a food truck down on L'Enfant Plaza. Glad to see they have moved up in the world to now having a "physical" restaurant. PROS: - very good pho that is well prepared. The meats and vegetables are especially fresh and you get good portions. - the management plays urban contemporary R&B and jazz. Don't know if he curates the music himself but he has good taste. - clean, trendy decor. Everything looks orderly (maybe too orderly), but that's a matter of opinion which leads me to my cons. - These are observances more than cons, and they are completely my own opinion. Number one, the atmosphere is almost too clean to the point of being sterile. You walk into the place and you immediately feel this isn't your standard pho restaurant environment. Most pho restaurants seen a little unkept looking; wait staff speaking Vietnamese to the cook staff, menus with pictures of pho dishes you can order, wait staff taking your order in bad English. I kind of like that type of atmosphere, but I respect the manager of this place trying to take things in a different direction. To each his own, right? - To add to this sterility of the place, the manager (or the person who seems to be the manager), always wears a face mask. He's nice enough but why the need to constantly wear a face mask when his assistant waiter doesn't? - Besides the QR code menu placards being meticulously placed on the tables (and I do mean meticuously), all facing the same direction and angle--not even a micro-inch off kilter. There are no physical menus. the manager/waiter brings out your food and drink and places everything in an overly precise and choreographed manner as if everything must be precisely placed at a precise point on your table. Seems like OCD behavior on steroids. I would end by saying this place makes great pho. But perhaps management should lighten up a bit and not be so overly conscious about appearances. If a placard is out of place when a customer comes in, it's ok. It's ok to just put food, drink and condiments on the customer's table without behaving like it's a precision drill. In other words, be more casual.

Ben S.

Yelp
So happy we stopped in! A great pho spot with a team that very clearly cares about the food and the dining experience. We had the beef pho and chicken pho on our visit, and both were excellent. The broths were well developed and the proteins were well cooked/prepared. Orders are taken via a Toast QR code, but service was quick, attentive, thoughtful, and intentional. We're lucky to have these junkies in the neighborhood!

P D.

Yelp
Somewhat of a hidden gem. Above all the pho and spring rolls are excellent. This is coupled with attentive, personal, polite and respectful service. The decor is more functional and modern.

Areerat K.

Yelp
Probably one of the best pho experiences i've had. Great prices, atmosphere, and the service was phenomenal. You are allowed to customize your dishes to fit your personalized taste. Servers are very caring and detailed orientated. Great spot for a date.

Yelp
This is where food is so good it makes you smile. I have been here twice now, the most recent time alone so I could really take in the ambiance of the place. The staff is extremely respectful and fantastic. I always felt very very welcomed and valued as soon as I came into the restaurant. The ambiance is calm and relaxing, some place where you go after a long day of work. The food is perfect. I have had the chicken and beef pho and both were delicious. This will continue to be an after work delight for me. Can't wait to come back!!

Chuck O.

Yelp
Service is almost awkward because it's so amazing. They have my son a free banana when it saw it on the shelf. Had to give them a good tip because I was so impressed.

Caroline C.

Yelp
Incredible food and service! Best pho I've had in a long time! Staff is tremendously attentive.Absolutely recommend.

Becca Z.

Yelp
Pho was tasty, maybe a little bland but I ate every bite! The egg rolls, however tasty the filling was, they tasted like they were fried in oil used for donuts. Totally threw me off.

Alex C.

Yelp
This place is AMAZING!! Coming from New York, many food spots in DC have been disappointing... but this spot. WOW. Mammamia 11/10. Broth is unreal. Finally some real FLAVOR. What are you doing still reading this? Get yo ass over here!

Will C.

Yelp
This place is simply fantastic. From the welcoming and attentive staff, to the customizable pho orders, and everything is incredibly fresh and flavorful. Tier 1 pho restaurant in my opinion. Spring rolls are also freaking epic. Come here and eat food NOW

Yelp
This is my first time having pho and I must say this is by far the best . The customer service was amazing . Let's not even get on the pho 20/10 yes I said 20 . This place was so good . Everything was worth it even my butt burning in the am because I ate alone of pepper I definitely recommend to anyone wanting to try pho .

Ruby Lou T.

Yelp
After eating here, you'll have to ask yourself every time you eat a bowl of pho "Is this as good as Pho Junkies?" The answer will always be no. The bar has been set high by this restaurant and I've yet to find somewhere better! The service is OUTSTANDING- the cleanest restaurant I've ever been to with the nicest staff.

Sarina N.

Yelp
Best pho ever!! We go almost every week. Best ambiance, best service, amazing/fresh ingredients
